Just like the title states this is a great hotel for the money, I book through the internet saved quit a bit, the rooms are small but I was not in the room only for showers and sleeping so save a few dollars, the continental breakfast wonderful, great coffee juice bagels muffins cereal, this is enough to get any one started for the day, each morning a newspaper is delivered to your room.
I enjoyed sitting out side on the porch which is across from the beach.
The staff was very helpful and friendly.
You are very close to Lincoln and Collins Ave. were all the shops and great restaurant are located, also Ocean Drive has many amenities.

Wonderful Service

from tish1080
Stayed at the winterhaven June 13th. The woman at the front desk should be working in a five star hotel. We were able to check in early, had an ocean front room and went straight to the beach arcoss the street. It is not The Ritz, but if you like to be close to the action without hearing it all night long Winterhaven is the place. It was quiet with small, but well appointed rooms. The breakfast was simple but well presented. Will stay again.

Quaint, simple, unassuming, perfect!

from Esoterik
My friend and I stayed here June 8 - 15 2004.

So ok, yes, as the other reviews have reflected, the hotel, in keeping with the Art Deco era, is not huge. The rooms are not palatial - but they are definitely adequately sized for their purpose (i.e. sleeping, getting dressed, chilling etc)

They are also well appointed and clean. The furnishings are well maintained. Everything worked as it should do. Air conditioning was very good. No problems with shower - however MOST rooms dont have a bath. They might not tell you this. ALso, unlike what was stipulated on the website (so I am informed), they do not have US adaptors for use, since previous guests pinched them all. They do have irons though and toiletries are replaced almost every day.

The location is fab - right on Ocean Drive, a short 2 min walk to the beach. There is a petrol station round the corner for your daily consumables - 2 blocks down is Washington Avenue, where much of the night activity takes place. A wide range of clubs and pubs are positioned along that street.

Washington Ave is also home to a whole host of boutiques and designer stores, from Urban Outfitters, to Gap and Sisley, to Armani. Cafes and bars are all dotted around the locality.

In my opinion this hotel is very good value FOR THE PRICE. I have just 2 gripes with this hotel.

First, is the breakfast. I understand that a COntinental brekafast is a little more modest than a full English, but in my opinion, a couple of bagels, muffins, tea, coffee and orange juice is a little to scanty! The cinnamon bagels were all finished by 9.30!! C'mon! How about some fruit or some cereal, maybe a few danish pastries??

My second whinge concerns one member of staff in particular who wasnt too friendly or helpful. Dont remember her name but she had permed dyed blonde hair and a hispanic accent.

Thankfully she contrasted starkly with the wonderful Anne Faye who was outstanding! Give her a raise.

Another thing - there is a considerable vagrant contingent in the area, who will occassionally approach you while u are trying to digest your bagel and try to bum a ciggie or a quarter off you. But that is not unique to the Winterhaven. It seemed to be the same the whole way along Ocean drive, even at the posher hotels.

Overall, a great place for the money. If you want a clean, comfortable hotel with some character but dont want to pay heaven and earth for it, this is for you! I will definitely stay here again.

Great hotell

My Wife and I only stayed for two nights, befor a cruise but found the Winterhaven a clean ,and the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was small but we were prepared for that, but very clean, the bathroom was small but a bit bigger than the cruise ship bathroom, the only thing we found was that the aircon outside was quite noisy, and if you were a light sleeper it could keep you awake at night, but we would stay there again.

Best hotel on Ocean Drive

from BearGoddess
We picked Winterhaven from other reviews on TripAdvisor and it is a great hotel! Wonderful Art Deco decor, right on Ocean Drive in the heart of South Beach. But this is important if you want to sleep in South Beach - this hotel is a block or so away from the main action and does not have a night club in the lobby. The rooms are small - but this is South Beach afterall. They are very nicely decorated and the bathrooms are lovely, though small. The owners have done a great job with the rooms, considering they were dealing with a 1930's hotel. Great continental breakfast. All of the hotel staff are friendly and very helpful. The hotel lobby is one of the best deco examples in South Beach. A tip - upper, ocean drive facing rooms are the best I think. A bit more in cost, but if you can afford the difference, well worth it.

Not as nice as I thought it would be

from A TripAdvisor Member
You know the saying: Location, location, location...location is everything. If you want to be in the middle of it all in South Beach within walking distance (not to mention across the street from the beach) and not pay an arm and a leg for it, then the Winterhaven is for you. The people are extremely friendly and helpful. I could not believe how sweet they were. However, the room smelled weird, it was extremely noisy, the room was tiny...and the bathroom, well...I could go on and on about the bathroom. It was tiny! No bigger than a closet. There is not just has a stand-up shower. It was really difficult taking a shower because the shower is about 2 feet by 2 feet and it is impossible not to get water all over the floor of the bathroom. Oh...I also ordered ice and never received it. There is no room service and no pool. They do serve free continental breakfast and they do have a small sun deck on the 6th floor, but that's about it.

Again, if you're going to South Beach with your pals and are going to be at the beach all day and party all night...then I would recommend staying at the Winterhaven because of location and price. If you're going to South Beach on business or on a romantic trip with your significant other...don't bother.

Nice small hotel

from janet1
Researched quite a few hotels and ended up at the Winterhaven. Thought it was very nice and clean, and nice quiet location even though it is close to the heart of South Beach. Staff was helpful and friendly. A few other reviews indicated that the rooms and bathrooms are small -- true, they are not huge but certainly found them suitable and it is right across from the beach. I found my stay quite enjoyable.

Quaint but very Clean

from A TripAdvisor Member
I searched South Beach Hotels for about a month on the internet. By reading the other reviews I knew what to expect. We stayed here 3/31 to 4/3. No the rooms and bathrooms are not big. But they were very clean.
The bed was comfortable. We stayed here for 2 1/2 days before a cruise.
It was perfect. It is right across from the beach and they supply you with beach towel when needed. We were not bothered by the loud partying down the street. We did not rent a car--but could walk to everything.
We had our continental breakfast on the front porch in the morning and a cocktail in the evening. It was a great place to people watch. The Winterhaven was even on the Art Deco tour. People would pass us by and look to see what the name of the hotel was. I would recommend this hotel and stay here again.

Dissappointed with the room but all else was great!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Winterhaven Hotel is located in a great spot across from the beach area and right in the middle of the "hot spot" of Ocean Drive. I found my room to be disappointing but the facility itself was very nice. Very clean building with everything fresh and updated. Lobby is spacious and bright, the bar in the lobby was average priced for the area and the hotel staff where beyond helpful and courteous.

Now for the downsides... the rooms are very small. I'm told that every room in the building is the same size, 12x12, but they seem much smaller than that. Although I didn't expect a spectacular view because we had gotten our room from an internet site, I was disgusted to look out my window and see a white wall. It was so close you couldn't even tell the weather. I was told we got this room because we purchased our room from the internet and would have gotten a better room if we had called them directly. The bathroom was small and there was nowhere in the shower stall to put your toiletries so I had to keep opening the shower curtain to get the necessities. Even the soap dish didn't hold the soap without a washcloth acting as the hammock to hold it. My search for an outlet to plug in the iron resulted in moving furniture to find one. This was a bit inconvenient since there wasn't much room to even set the ironing board up.

All in all, our stay was ok. If you opt to stay here, be sure to call and ask about your room and the view you want. You have to be up a few stories to see the ocean. Otherwise, you're looking at the street or the area buildings around you. I can't say I'd never stay here again but I'll be sure to compare this one to other area hotels, including the amenities they offer.

terrific deal

from Halibou
We found the Winterhaven to be a great deal: right on Ocean but in the quiter part, great lobby and deco look, modern and clean facilities and even an unexpected view of the ocean from our non-deluxe room (505).
The space was smallish, but most hotels in SoBe are unless you want to spend much much more, and although the bathroom had only a shower, it had great pressure and was all new facilities. I have stayed in five different hotels in SoBe (including the Loews) and found this by far to be the best on offer when considering price, facilities and location.
Will definitely stay again.

Perfect for

from A TripAdvisor Member
After carefully reviewing hotel descriptions and recommendations, we finally selected the Winterhaven hotel based on location (right on Ocean drive at 14th st, close enough to the nightlife a few blocks down the street and directly across from the beach) and price (neither suspiciously cheap nor ridiculously expensive). We couldn't have selected better. The staff was super polite, the beach was easier access than most other places, the hotel was not noisy, and the decor was very tasteful (great lobby; enjoyed sitting in it and on the front patio while taking advantage of the complimentary breakfast). The rooms and bathrooms were small, but not as claustrophobic as I expected to find in the Deco District. More importantly, you could tell they were clean (our bathroom was shiny and new too).

Top Local Tips for Miami Beach

Espaniola Way Great place to visit during the evening to stroll and people watch. The Hosteria Romana restaurant is a hotspot for lunch and dinner.

Parking Parking can be found on 13th and 16th street cheaper than valet service

Tips Because South beach attracts a wide range of European visitors, I have noticed that many restaurants add the gratuity of 15-18%. However when you charge the bill there is a line for tips and I feel that it could confuse patrons to think that they have to tip more. I also noticed that restaurants round up the bill when giving change on a cash transaction. Not to be cheap ,but I think that they should give you the option to say keep the change. I travel extensively and I feel that many first time visitors can be confused by this policy. I noticed it at Nexxt Cafe on Lincoln Road. Great value as a restaurant but they should really be more consumer friendly.
