Historical Traveller Reviews of The Strand Ocean Drive Hotel

Great hotel, great location, but be patient

from Connecticut_Couple
I booked four rooms for two families (couples and teenagers) for New Year's Eve. As most of the hotels on Ocean Drive in South Beach had 3 night minimums and $500 rates, I felt lucky to get the Strand for $209 per room for one night.

Getting there is tough, especially if Ocean Drive is closed to auto traffic (which it was on New Year's). Checking in took two trips of 45 minutes each...only one room was available when we got there at noon, so we had to come back after 3:30. They had the wrong room rates, needed to see my written confirmation, make a copy of my credit card and driver's licence, etc., etc. We got our 4 rooms in two different buildings on three different floors. We had to wheel our luggage through an outdoor cafe, knocking over people's lunch on the way. And you need your key to get into the building as well as your room---which is only a problem if your party is scattered across different buildings!

HOWEVER--the rooms were gorgeous, and the location is to die for--right in the middle of all the action on South Beach. The staff is very pleasant, but can only help one person at a time.

Would I go back? Yes. But not with a large group or a lot of luggage.

Absolutely Awesome! Highly Recommended!

I loved this hotel. Great location, great service. Room was immaculate, extremely clean. We had a room in the Deco building, all remodeled, very modern and clean. Huge bathroom, kitchenette, seating area. Awesome deal! Only one thing not related to the hotel, we had very big problems with Orbitz.com and would not recommend them to anyone, we will no longer use their service. One big issue, for example, we tried to change a flight through Orbitz, and they wanted to charge $125 to change the flight, claiming it was a "delta" charge. We had them release the airline ticket to Delta, and Delta only charged $25! Orbitz customer service were not helpful, dropped our call various times, only after leaving us on hold for 30 minutes at a time.

Bad Service, Charges on the Card

from mugarosh
We booked this hotel for a weekend, we looked at many hotels in the area, and this hotel looked like a nice place to stay. The room was nice, however the service was the worst. First we couldn't get the safe to work, so we called in to the front desk, and 2 hours later their "head engineer" fixed the safe. So finally we could lock our valuables in the safe and go out to the beach. When we came back and tried to open the safe the safe would not open, so we called the front desk again, and were told that since it is Saturday, the whole maintenance staff is off, and the have to call their "head engineer at home". We had all our money and cards in that safe. We asked them if it was possible for them to pay for our lunch, since we had to wait for a while for "head engineer", they were nice enough to agree to do that. However, couple days after we left Miami, the charge for that lunch appeared on my Credit Card! So don't rely on service at that hotel. When I go back to Miami, I will stay at a big chain hotel like Marriott..

Definitely worth the money - Its my new spot on the strip!

The Strand is a set of condos that double as hotel rooms. We booked the Junior Suite and were pleasantly surprised when we walked in. The room is probably bigger than the condo I live in :)

Everything was very new - modern ammenities and appliances and in the heart of the action (near 11th and Ocean). The pool on the roof has a beautiful view of the beach and ample chairs for tanning (if you don't want to walk across the street to the beach). We were able to score street parking steps from the hotel both nights we had a rental car so we saved the valet fees.
Alright . . . the downsides . . . it was a bit hard to find at first (check in desk is in an alley way between two buildings - no major signage at the front). We had good service from the staff (something we were sensitive to given previous reviews) but our microwave oven didnt' seem to be plugged in and since it was mounted it wasn't a simple "find the plug and solve the problem" (it wasn't solved by the time we left). Lastly - the room we were in was situated overtop a store which cranked music from 9am to midnight (the bass rattled our dishes in the kitchen) but this just meant we had to be up by 9am and take full advantage of the day.

Definitely for the young adult crowd. We'd definitely stay there again - just maybe on the 3rd or 4th floor :)

Great Place to Stay, Great Location

from Stoke_L
My wife and I stayed at The Strand over Thanksgiving weekend. The Hotel is located in a great spot next to the former Versace Mansion on 11th and Ocean Drive.

We stayed in the Tropical Building. It was very quiet and the room was incredible. It is very modern and very clean. They have Sharp Aquos Flat Screens in the rooms. The bed is one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in.

The Rooftop Pool is also phenomenal. The view is awesome and they have very comfortable chairs to lay out on.

I would highly recommed staying at this hotel. You will not be dissappoined.

The only place to stay

from mtmksm
I stayed at The Strand from Nov 16th-22nd of this year. I had booked a junior suite ocean view through Expedia. When the taxi arrived in front of the building i was promptly greeted by Josue' ( Josh) asking me if i was staying at the Strand. When i said yes he took my bag and walked me back to the check in which is in between two of the buildings toward the back. Check in was easy and in no time at all Josue' was taking me to my room on the 4th floor of the Retro building. The Strand is four buildings and each is decorated different inside and out. Josue" walked me in my room and showed me around and showed me where all the things were in the kitchen. He then walked me to the balcony which was huge. I did get my room facing Ocean Drive and the Ocean. The view was awesome. Josue' then told me if i had any questions or concerns to let him know and he would help me out. I asked him where the pool was so he then said follow me and he walked me over to the building with the pool and brought me up and showed it to me. The view from there was also awesome but since the weather was not that great the days i was there i never got to use it. I was traveling by myself so the room was plenty big enough for me. It would also be big enough for a group of 4-5. The kitchen looked like it was brand new with stainless steel everything. The refrigerator was not one of those real small ones you sometimes get but a good size to store your goods, same with the freezer. The bed was one of the best i have ever slept on. The 300 count sheets were very soft. The pillows were so soft i wish i had them for my bed. When you put your head down it sank right into them and i was using two. I liked the flat screen tv that was connected to the wall as it had a great picture and many channels to choose from. The soaking tub/rain fall shower was also very good. I take long showers and the water stayed hot the whole time. The sink is in the same room as the tub but the toilet was situated by itself with a connecting door to the tub and a seperate entrance from the living room. The whole bathroom area was seperated from your bedroom by two sliding glass doors which looked very classy. There was plenty of closet space for clothes and an in room safe to lock away your valuables. The only minor complaint i could have would be the carpet looked like it should be replaced with a new one. I ate three time at the Atlantic Bar and Grill which was right under my room and both service and food was great all three times. Remember you are right on Ocean Drive so there is some noise at night with all the cars and people going by but it was not enough to keep me up as the room stayed fairly quiet accept the night four guys set up their buckets and started banging away playing their music. I watched from the balcony and it was pretty cool as the girls would come by and start dancing away to the beat. If you are their to party the balcony could hold 30 people easily as it runs the length of the building. You do not need a car if you are staying here as most things are in walking distance. This will be the place i stay every time i come to South Beach as the room and location are perfect.

My official Miami hotel is nowThe Strand

from copperbus
This was my second trip to Miami in as many months, but this trip was during our twentieth anniversary. After making my travel arrangements I called the Strand, and the concierge on duty, Charlene, took care of me right from the start.
When we arrived, we were treated like royalty; from our check-in, throughout our stay, until unfortunately we had to leave. Everyone, and I mean everyone representing The Strand, gave us quality service that was unsurpassed. From my experience, I know people can be trained in customer service, but these individuals took it to the next level. You would think they actually had stock in the Strand.
The front desk is in a small area, but do not be deceived, the rooms are wonderful. They have spared no expense, with all the latest conveniences in the kitchen and bathrooms. The deco is Miami retro-classic with a modern flavor. Anything you've read about the pool and scenery does not do it justice. Parking is $35.00 a day, but if you pay in advance, it is $25.00, and it's door-to -door service.
Whatever problems the Strand had during their opening, they have ironed out. We were so happy during our stay; we gave Charlene flowers in appreciation of the service we received. Whatever your venue or reason for visiting South Beach, Miami, the Strand should be your hotel of choice. The location is great, right in the middle of South Beach, and in walking distance to everything. So with or without a car, you'll have a great time there. The Strand is quickly becoming, if not already, one of the paramount hotels in South Beach; the big boys better watch out.
Although the overall quality is top flight, it is not a stuffy hotel catering to snobs. Please let your hair down, this is South Beach. When I return to Miami, the Strand will always be our official Hotel...

Loved The Strand!

from mama924
This hotel was really nice. Actually more than nice as was the staff. I knew that renovations were still taking place so there were no surprises. Nor were there any disturbances.

This hotel consists of four low rise buildings. The main building is at 1052 Ocean Drive. The reception area entrance is on the left side of the building toward the back. The front of the building will be a gift shop, restaurant (Cheeburger Cheeburger) and a bar when complete. We got to the hotel at noon and I was worried that since check in was at 3pm we might have to wait. Not so. Charlene (I think that was her name, I apologize if I'm wrong) was ready to hand me a key. I had informed her that I requested via email to Cynthia, the manager, who responded the very next day, that I perfer a room in the same building where the pool is since a previous reviewer stated there was no bathroom by the pool. She said no problem however, she did inform me that there is indeed a pool bathroom. It is one flight down on the fifth floor. I then told her I was celebrating my anniversary. She congratulated me. When I got to my room, I was upgraded from junior suite ocean view to a one bedroom suite ocean view. Absoutely awesome! The room was of very nice size with a separate bedroom, a really comfy bed with a down comforter and high tread count sheets. As a previous reviewer stated, there are no drawers but there were many hangers and what I didn't hang I folded either on top of the closet shelf or on top of the safe at the bottom of the closet. The bathroom had a tub large enough for both me and the hubby :-) and you can access the bathroom from either the foyer or bedroom. The living room had a desk, sofa which slides out for use to sleep and a nice size club chair and cocktail table. The kitchen had a double burner stove, a full size fridge, a coffee maker, a dishwasher and all the utencils and dishes needed. Even a corkscrew which was great since I forgot mine! The decor reminded me of a Pottery Barn/Crate n Barrell type decor. Very cool. The balcony was large which you can access from the living room or bedroom. There were no chairs on the balcony but we called housekeeping and they brought us a few folding chairs. The room was very clean. There were no towels in the bathroom so when I went down to reception and told the gentleman at the desk and he apologized and immediately sent a girl with enough towels to last me my entire stay and then some. Thank you. He was a very nice young man from Cancun. Every staff or person I encountered at the Strand was professional and courteous and couldn't be more helpful.

The pool is awesome. The view from the rooftop pool is incredible. You can see right to the ocean. You can step down about 4 steps and watch the people walk by Ocean Drive. The pool isn't huge. Maybe 20 feet long by 8 feet wide and up to 4 feet deep. But it was perfect for refreshing yourself from the hot Florida sun. There are 16 lounge beds, 4 tables with chairs around then a few funky shaped chairs to sit and chat in. If your room doesn't have a balcony this is a perfect alternative to one. It is open till 10 pm so you can go up and have a bottle of wine and watch the people walk by Ocean Drive.

I will definitely be returning to The Strand Ocean Drive and I can't wait!

Bedbugs!

from prtz
While the decor of the hotel and location were quite nice, I stayed there during the 3rd week of June 2006 and both my girlfriend and I got BEDBUGS!! By the 2nd day, we were covered in bites and asked to be moved to a different room. Please, please, please be careful when sleeping.
Management Response from StrandHotelGM
When this guest approached the front desk back in June when he was staying and informed us that he had received bed bug bites from the night before, our Executive Housekeeper immediately went to the room to investigate. As bed bugs consume almost 10X as much blood as mosquitos and with normal movement of an individual in bed at night, typical signs of bed bugs is blood spots on the sheets as well as some of the insects body or shells - no such evidence was observed. The guest had informed us that the hospital stated that it could have been bed bugs - but could not determine it definitively. We moved the guests and cleaned the room appropriately and there has been no other situations reported since then.

Excellent. Perfect Location. Heart of the action/relaxation

Excellent hotel. Stayed in Miami one nigh, had a quick look on this site. Saw it was recommended. Friends had told me Ocean Drive was the place and so booked. Very glad I did. Room was superb. Very spacious. Balcony out the side overlooking the ocean and ocean drive. Room/studio and building looks as though it had just been refurbished throughout. Very nice attention to detail. Close to excellent night life too. Valet parking is available through hotel and other companies outside the front door of the hotel all for $20. Bargain. Definelty stay here again. RECOMMENDED.

Top Local Tips for Miami Beach

Restaurants We used Zagats to find restaurants and had great luck. Also try the Pelican down the street for breakfast or lunch - both were great.

Caffe Milano We had lunch here and were incredibly disappointed with the food. The worst Ahi Tuna ever. Way over priced!

Dolphin Mall Dolphin Mall is a great place to shop. Its basically a huge outlet mall with lots of great items at great prices. Best of all they offer a $5 shuttle bus which picks up and drops off at various locations downtown Miami.
