Historical Traveller Reviews of The Betsy Hotel

A good find

from LeedsWorldTraveller
I booked this hotel because of the reviews on Trip advisor, and because it is SLH property and i like their type of hotels. I used AmEx to book the room to take advantage of their benefits - free nights, upgrades, free breakfast etc...
The hotel is trying to pride itself on service, and it is good. They welcomed me warmly, and upgraded me to an ocean view suite. The room was great, lovely wooden floor, large sleeping area with a massive bed, big corner living room, walkin closet in the hallway and fully tiled bathroom with the pointless mirror TV. They only down side was there was no bath and the view is actually of starbucks in the direction of the ocean.
The hotel was well decorated to a decent level, up there with tides, all the staff greeted me by name and were more than happy to help. The swimming pool was ok but had no view and was in the shade most of the time. The beach chairs were good and run by boucher bros, who seem to do most of the beach chairs, but you had to leave at 5 which i think was too early.
The on site restaurant was pretty good, although they did struggle with the complimentary breakfast - they did not know what to include etc.. and if you ordered anything not off the bakery section it was so slow.
Checkout was painful, it took ages to adjust the bill for my free nights and breakfast to be worked out.
In summing up a modern traditional well renovated hotel with good service.

What a place! Very low-key and upscale. Perfect / personal size.

from SparkyNeb
We stayed here years ago (i.e., before the renovation) and were not expecting much to be honest. Firstly, extremely friendly service and amazingly good for having just opened. The "boutique" nature of the hotel (vs. the ones that take 30 minutes to check out of) really shines here. We loved the restaurant (a branch of BLT Steak from NYC), especially the design and the fact that you could eat on the terrace. The best, however, were the rooms--so beautiful and high-quality--we didn't want to leave! I did hear some guests complain about the small pool but this place isn't the Shore Club / Delano / etc. meat market and the ocean (with a Betsy drink/towel dude in their own little area) is perfect and just opposite the hotel. We will definitely come back and preferred the Betsy to the large and loud "typical" Miami Beach hotels. Two other (wonderful) "nits": free wifi (I hate upscale hotels that hit you up for an extra few bucks/night!) and yummy/yummy/yummy sheets and pillows!

Has the potential to be great (4 stars at least) when completed!!

from JLS24
We checked out of the Betsy yesterday - havign checked in on 1 May. I would note that we were told when we checked in that we were some of the first paying guests as march and April they had been trialling with friends and guests of the owners etc. This possibly explains why none of the reviews posted so far mentions the fact that the hotel is not completed. The Roof solarium / spa and fitness centre all remain to be completed - this was pretty disappointing to us, and we felt shoudl have been raised with us when we booked directly with the hotel.

Two further negatives
1 The hotel advertises they have private beach butlers - in fact as noted in one of the previous reviews they subcontract the beach service to Boucher bros and once they have set you up there is no further service. The beach also "shuts" at 5pm meaning you lose your chairs and umbrellas. This is when we were hoping ot retire to the sun terrace - not to be given it is nowhere near complete

2 The swilling pool is very poor - it is very enclosed with little space to bathe and is either red hot when in the sun, or from fairly early on quite dungeon like when the sun goes in. We were not looking for a pool - but there are many hotels with better pools on South Beach.

All the above aside we did want to say that we think when the hotel is completed it will be amazing. The quality of the furnishings is good, the only criticism we coudl make would be that the firedoors look a little low grade. The soundproofing is reasonable to the outside - although if ou are too near the lift you do hear the lift bell and the cleaners mobile early in the morning. We wouldrecommend you stay on the third floor if you are on Ocean drive to minimise noise from Ocean Drive itself.

The hotel staff - Adnan in particular - did recognise our concerns ar being misled on the website over the state of readiness of the hotel and we were offered a late checkout to complensate which was useful and appreciated as we had a late night flight back to the UkK.
Management Response from StrandHotelGM
The Betsy Hotel opened her doors to 'paying guests' on 1 April 2009 after a brief "soft-opening" period in late March. All the reviews here on TripAdvisor were posted after our official opening. In order to ensure the Roof Deck Solarium and Fitness Center were completed to to the highest Betsy standard, we did, unfortunately, have to delay the opening of both those facilities. In these times of global internet marketing, there is information available on many websites around the world (some not directly under our control) and we certainly try to ensure information on the Betsy is current and correct. We are able to confirm that the Fitness Center is open, and expect the Roof Deck Solarium to be open in late June.
As one of only a few hotels on Ocean Drive with a pool, we consider it to be a great amenity which does catch the sun and is large enough for swimming laps.
We appreciate the comments regarding the beach and will be reviewing the Beach Butler service.

Best hotel in Miami Beach bar none!

from gesaati
We just returned from a seven day stay at the Betsy Hotel, and we were absolutely blown away by the accommodations, amenities, and service we received. From the moment arrived, we were greeted by extremely friendly staff members, who not only went out of their way to tend to our every need/request, but also took the time to get to know us on a personal level. There aren’t too many hotels who would take the time to inquire as to the purpose of your stay and what kind of desert you like. (Just for the sake of context, I was congratulated by the staff for having finished law school – which was the reason for my vacation, and also brought up chocolate and fruit to our room – my favorite desert).

Our room was fabulous ocean front suite that had the most comfortable hotel bed we’ve ever slept on. Our bathroom also had a television embedded in the vanity mirror so we could watch television while showering or getting ready. The Décor in the suite and throughout the rest of the hotel, really made it feel like a home away from home. It was the perfect balance between modern furnishings, while maintaining classic and elegant features.

If you like five star food, eat at the BLT restaurant inside. It will make non meat lovers like meat!!!! For those of you who don't know, BLT is one of the best steak houses in the country, and the service is outstanding. By the way, I highly recommend the Malbec wine and the top Prime Sirloin (it's a special, but hopefully will eventually be a permanent fixture on the menu). And the cheese popovers, will make you kick any diet you're on. TRUST ME, these come to the table complimentary and barely wanted to eat the entree after tasting them.

BOOKING ADVICE: don't book with any 3rd party. Call the hotel directly. In fact, call "Livingston" in reservations. He will go above and beyond to ensure you'll love your stay and get the appropriate room.

We would highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for “a four seasons type experience” on Miami beach.

The Betsy, Our new home in SoBe

from drdkc
Stayed at the Betsy over April break with my daughter, a BFF and her daughters. We were doing a mother/daughter bonding, shopping and eating trip and there could not have been a better hotel for our needs. The staff took wonderful care of us and made us feel completely at home. The food at the hotel is superb, and although we usually enjoy going over to Big Pink or The Front Porch for some breakfast, we ate at the Betsy the first day and never strayed. Everything was top notch, from the freshest ample fruit plate to the marvelous baked goods (best scones of my life) to the light and fluffy frittatas, made just to your liking. The room itself is on the smaller side, but I prefer to call it cozy, as the bed was wonderful and the bedding sumptuous.A large flatscreen TV fit nicely into the decor.
Frette bathtowels accompanied the somewhat economically sized but functional bathroom. The Betsy participates in the green consciousness with a towel and linen conservation program as well as Toto toilets which help to conserve water. The flatscreen TV built into the bathroom mirror was a bit of an unnecessary extravagance, as I can't imagie who would watch TV for the small amount of time it takes to brush your teeth or wash your face, but I guess there are those hopelessly addicted to Bloomberg and the ever streaming tickertape of stock prices. Anyway, I do digress! The staff was wonderful and accomodating. A big hello to Erica, Eric, Dekel and Robert who helped us feel like the Betsy was our home away from home. We ate dinner at BLT which is located in the lobby of the Betsy on the eve of our sad departure. They were sensitive of our time constraints, and made sure we had a great dining experience in the hour that we had to eat. They sent us off to the airport sated and sad to leave, with a goody bag of madelines just out of the oven. The location is fantastic, just across the beach with great beach access. The Bouche Brothers operate the towel concession and you simply announce yourself as a guest of the Betsy, and they take care of it from there. Terry cushion covers, betsy towels and umbrellas are provided at no extra charge, usually 2 to a room. The lobby is a clean, modern open space with large palms and overhead fans, casablanca style. From the moment you enter into the world of the Betsy, you know that you are on vacation, and we got that inner tingle that told us it was
going to be a great one. Kudos, and hope the Betsy can continue to keep up the level of service and comfort that so impressed us on this opening week.

The most relaxing and comfortable luxury hotel in South Beach

from positivetravel
This hotel offered the best of South Beach. The quite plantation atmosphere with big ceiling fans combined with the most comfortable beach loungers helped me settle into relax mode as quickly as I could have asked for. The service at The Betsy was flawless – sweet, eager to help and every time I got off the elevator a staff member was casually walking buy checking in to see if I needed anything. The décor of the squeaky clean rooms balanced perfect minimalism with warmth and cozy bedding making it a hard choice between staying in bed or walking less than 5 minutes to those Betsy beach loungers. The hotel bar and lounge is a great place for a civilized 5pm cocktail. We ended up spending a good part of a rainy afternoon on the couches chatting. In general, the Betsy offers a lovely luxury home in the middle of a bustling South Beach.

The Betsy provides guests with luxury, comfort and attentiveness that surpassses any other hotel.

from NJ_traveler96
An overall outstanding hotel which despite its central location on Ocean Drive was quiet at any time day or night with staff that were extremely attentive and not at all overbearing. There were outstanding room amenities from the bedding to the towels, toiletries, etc, The front desk staff were very accommodating consistently trying to help with any questions, needed items, directions, etc. The restaurant's food and wine were wonderful providing similar attention to detail, attentiveness and luxury as the rest of the hotel.
I would highly recommend THE BETSY for business or pleasure.

The Betsy Hotel is the epitome of perfection situated in the most desirable area of South Beach

from JEVNewYork
The Betsy Hotel is the epitome of perfection situated in the most desirable area of South Beach. Checking in was a breeze and throughout my stay the staff could not have been more attentive and welcoming. My room was beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean! It was truly one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. In addition, the amenities in the room and bathroom were excellent. The lobby was the perfect spot for sitting and relaxing with my friends. We dined at BLT Steak during our stay. The food was delicious along with an impressive wine list. We also ate outside (breakfast and lunch) on the veranda, which provided beautiful views and interesting people watching. The staff at the beach set up our chairs and provided us with towels…what great service! I can say this is one of the nicest and most luxurious hotels I have ever stayed in and would highly recommend it to everyone!

Excellent Hotel and Service

from thesport33
Stayed at the Betsy Hotel on South Beach. Rooms were very upscale and great. Even had a tv in the mirror in the bathroom. The location is terrific because you can walk all of South Beach as well as Lincoln Road. The service staff were very friendly. The hotel restaurant has a great steakhouse. I would definitely go back.

Phenomenal hotel with all the luxuries and premium service

from djrenn
The Besty is a recently renovated hotel that has all the comforts of leisure travel...and more. While the rooms are not huge, they are much larger than many of the other south beach hotels I'm familiar with. The room was very comfortable (great bedding and pillows) and impeccably clean. If you're into technology and/or business travel, the generous sized flat screen doubles as a monitor for your computer and/or ipod (for movies). The concierge (more on them below) will supply any necessary cables. The radio alarm clock also had a docking station for your ipod as well.

The bathrooms were the epitome of luxurious. I wasn't sure what I was more impressed with: The double headed shower (one mounted and one handheld) with great water pressure, the plush bath towels, or the built in flat screen TV into the bathroom mirror!

The hotel did have a pool which you can access through the back of the lobby. It was a medium sized pool with lounge chairs and umbrellas. While there wasn't a bar at pool side, the lobby bar was not far away.

The beach we frequented was about a 5 min walk across the street. Hotel guests are entitled to lounge chairs and umbrellas that are set up by beach staff. The chairs were the most comfortable lounge chairs I have ever sat on. They are set up with a fresh terrycloth sheet and you are provided with a beach towel as well and are available until 5:00 – 5:30pm.

Overall, I was most impressed with the service I received from each and every staff member at the hotel and restaurant. The concierge was helpful with even the smallest requests - and truly seemed happy to do so. They spent a good amount of time researching bus schedules, restaurants, and specific nightlife activity we were looking for. This was an anomaly from other hotels I've stayed in, especially in the South Beach area and I really appreciated the service.

The property is very conveniently located to restaurants, beach, nightlife, shopping, etc. I wish I could have spent more time there and would definitely return the next time I'm in the area and would highly recommend this newly renovated kid on the block!
