Not very hospitable!

For the cost, the room was great, large, clean and great view of the ocean. When arriving the front desk guy was very slow and never cracked a smile. The help used the elevators regularly and made you feel like you were taking up space... no one smiled or said hello - The concierge was equally unhelpful and unfriendly, couldn't get off his personal call to answer a question..
Our "deal" included breakfast. Forget that. The dining room was very dingy and unappealing as was the frozen croissant, oj in paper cup and coffee. We gave our 2nd day breakfast vouchers to some people we met on the street!
The location was great, right off of Lincoln Rd. and very close to South Beach, easy walk. The bars were only open on weekends and we were there during the week. If you want to go someplace where you feel special and feel good walking in and around the place, I wouldn't recommend The Shelbourne Hotel.

I had been in the lobby last year and thought it had been perfectly fine. A friend had been interested in purchasing a unit but we were unable to inspect any rooms. I wrongly assumed the lobby would be representative of the entire hotel....bad mistake. I booked the room a month ago, right after the town empties following the miami boat show. It took three calls to get a confirmation faxed to me. I should have realized if that occurs it's going to be like that right down the line. Sure enough we arrive and go to our oceanfront room to find the following.....peeling paint,dirty tissues left in bathroom, broken door leading to terrace with shower like drain, dirty bedspread, bad odor throughout room...must I go on. In any case we go down to the pool area and find no help around to hand out towels or set up lounges. You are on your own. As we move lounges into position we realize they are shaky and ancient. The pool looks poorly maintained with an old deco diving platform that is in disrepair and not for use. Upon going out to the public beach we find an old broken wooden door with no locks or security people to oversee access, meaning any drunk or derelict person may have easy entry(which in fact happenned the next day). The family was quite p***ed and I spoke with the desk to explain we would be leaving, Billy at the desk was very nice and said they would only charge for the one night, but asked if he could show me another room, which was a duplex suite. It was remodeled and acceptable, so the staff, all of them were really nice. The problem is they can't make up for a facility that needs tons of upgrade. We did stay on for the 5 nights but never did spend much time at their pool area, since they insisted on doing grinding work on the metal railings poolside. Bottomline is having stayed at the Loews several times in the last three years as recently as one month ago, but being annoyed at the rate they were looking for I looked for "A Bargain", unfortunately we all know there is no such thing as I found out.

I got a call today from the MORONS at the Shelborne telling me that they overbooked the week that I was to stay there and that I will not a have room. I called 3 days ago to check on my reservation and everything was fine. Some guy Stuart told me that he is the manager and that I am LUCKY that they called and told me now and that i didnt show up and find out then! They directed me to hotels that DONOT have rooms available!These hotels have no idea why the Shelborne is giving out this info. I spoke to 6 people at the hotel.Everyone of them was completely RUDE,SARCASTIC,and NASTY! They could care less that I have spent $1,000 already on this trip and had no where to stay! I have never in my life been treated with such disrespect from a business.I am filing complaints with the better business bureau,Miami beach commernce dept,and who ever else will listin.If you have had a similar problem with these freaks,PLEASE file some kind of complaint!My advice STAY AWAY from this place!Seriously,you might show up in lovely south beach and have to sleep on th beach.

I won't even have a chance to review this property because they cancelled my reservation at the last minute. I booked this property in October for my February stay and even reconfirmed my reservation twice. The Shelborne contacted me one day prior to my arrival to inform me that they could not accommodate me but would be willing to transfer my reservation to a Best Western in Miami Beach. Again, I made this reservation five months in advance and was planning to be in town during the Miami Yacht Show. There was no way possible I would be able to find another hotel in the area at such late notice as everything else was sold out. My only choice was to take the lower level Best Western in an area I didn't want or to sleep on the beach! When I contacted the manager, the only response I got was "Oh well, this kind of stuff happens." Very unprofessional to say the least. I would highly recommend you stay away from this property. They do not care about their customers.

Not the Ritz Carlton or the Delano, but much cheaper with the same views. Don't pay attention to the reviews before it was renovated.-much better then any past reviews we have read. Some rooms that haven't been updated (ones with door balconies). If possible request rooms with tile flooring. There is construction going on when you go to the beach however it has nothing to go with the hotel. Be sure to check out the 1/4 drunk beer bottle that sits on the high diving board that is off limits. Question - How did it get there? Check out the karoke bar in the lower level of the hotel. It is open until 5:00 a.m. Nice hospitality. Recommend not taking the super shuttle to or from the hotel as it is the same price as a cab. Cab will get you to the hotel or the airport quicker then the super shuttle. Super shuttle is a time waster. Don't bother renting a car. Parking/valet service could cost you $18.00 or more per day. Everything is within walking distance or a $6.00 cab ride oneway. If walking beware of cars as they may drive very fast through cross walks.

the rooms are large, to be sure, but very plain. Beds are just double beds on roller-wheels. tiled floors. Must say though that it was all quite clean. No high speed internet access. Right on the beach which was nice. Pool area was OK, but pretty average. TV / cable reception was terrible.

I gave my stay at the Shelborne "an above average" rating because I had such a good time in Miami. I've stayed in MUCH nicer hotels but not many with as much charm.

The Shelborne is not modern. The water temperature fluxuated from what I had set to extremely hot often. The TV is circa 1985. Our car in the Shelborne lot ended up with a flat tire, rear bumper scratch and the rims bent somehow. The club named the Studio (located in the hotel) was a karaoke nightmare that made me laugh and ended up having its glass entrance door shattered by some unruly party goers. The massage I had was great. Only sampled a bit of fried calmari from the restraunt, it was ok. No one attempted room service due to the astronomical taxes and gratutity plus a pot of coffee was $8.95. Ice was free and sent to yr room by a bellman, I even got a newspaper upon request!

The hotel is in the heart of South Beach and is on the water. The pool and 1 of the jacuzzi's were good. The weight room on the 17th floor was simple very simple. House keeping came when we requested and obeyed our do not disturb sign.

One of the most impressive things about this relic is that they're so many ballrooms that are just vacant, at least 6 200 people size ballrooms. Fun to explore and sneak around the lobby and mezzanine areas. Super cool stair case to walk down Mez to Lobby. back of the hotel elevators super slow at times. The ones near the street entrance are turbo. Bed comfort was decent. Cabs are easy to get on Collins Ave at all hours we tried. Plenty of all night eating establishments a few blocks away. Small store located poolside where one could by sun and shot glasses. Walking to the ocean is a couple minutes from the pool thru a construction zone. Bring your own chairs or a towell if yr not prepared to pay $10 to rent 1. It was quiet and had HBO.

This is a rather jumbled review but thats a little how the Shelborne is. Old and pink and odd.

It was an okay place. The room was decent and clean. The pool area was nice. The beach area was weak. The location was horrible. The action is on the lower streets-8th-9th.

I stood at the Shelbourne in July, 2003. I must say that the lobby of the hotel is real nice and the rooms are okay, they look much better on their website. I had a oceanview room which gave me great view but the balcony itself needed painting. I heard stories about the staff being rude, IT IS TRUE. I was at the poolside with some family members and the staff kept staring at us as if we were about to steal their chairs or something. For the money, I would probably try something else next time.

While five days for two rooms were prepaid, on arrival one of the rooms was completely filthy, with torn bedding, and no space to put clothes..
The front desk was extremely rude when we tried to change rooms, and the manager, while apologetic, did nothing. One attempt to change rooms resulted in our unlocking the door to a room already occupied. We were finally changed on the next to last day. This hotel is on the list of Go-Go Tours, but avoid it at all costs. We have stayed in hotels ranging from Four Seasons to Hampton Inns and are not unsophisticated travellers. Just heed our warning.

No bang for your buck!!

I went down in October 2002. The lobby is very impressive, but I wasn't staying in the lobby. The hotel needs to revamp it's plumbing. you could tell it was an old hotel whenever you took a shower. I expected more for the amount they charge you. They have a club (and I use the term club loosely) downstairs that could be nice if more thought and promotion went into it. Overall, the hotel is ok because of the location, but to pricey for what you get.

Top Local Tips for Miami Beach

Hop on the South Beach Local If you are staying in or around South Beach and want a quick and inexpensive way to get around... get on a South Beach Local bus. They run every 15 minutes and take you all over the area. It was clean, safe, and easy.

Teenagers Miami great but did not let our 16 year old daughter out of our sight. Even at traffic lights we had sleezy guys approach her.

So much to do SOBE is just so loaded with things to do and blessed with nearly perfect year round weather, SOBE will not disapoint. Park you car in the public garage on 16th street about 5 blocks from the hotel and either walk of take the buses. Linclon Ave, Ocean Drive and the beach are all within a short walk, actually the beach is at the hotel. Tke the bus to Haulover state park and go the beach at the north end for sun, fun and people watching on the very well attended nude beach. Ocean Drive just 3 blocks to the south has great bars and restaurants as does Licoln Ave . Walking in these areas is safe but this is a city so be alert. I would avoid walking on Washington Ave at night even though several of the clubs are there, just take a cab Your time in SOBe will pass way to fast... enjoy
