Historical Traveller Reviews of Penquin Hotel

Not True!

We stayed 10 days in this hotel. All I read are bad reviews and I completely disagree.
Staff was friendly, management efficient. Rooms clean and confortable, but we weren't there to much anyway.
Definitely a sure come back hotel!

Avoid the Staff (at least some of them)

from A TripAdvisor Member
Rude staff and tiny rooms aren't worth the convenience of this hotel's location on Ocean Drive. On our first day, we were greeted by an obnoxious reception desk attendant (the "strawberry blonde"), who after demanding a credit card for a $100 room deposit (and not explaining what she wanted to do with the card), refused to hold our luggage since we had arrived before check-in time - (just 40 minutes before check-in). After some pleading, we managed to throw our luggage on top of a pile of other bags. From that point on, we cringed at any interaction with this bitter person, since she retorted with the same attitude each time. I understand that the hotel has about a 2-star rating and is inexpensive, but that doesn't mean you should be be sarcastic and blatantly rude to your guests. So next time, we'll go for better quality if that means just a couple of extra blocks to walk to the beach.

It was fine

Ok, so this is no glamorous room, but for 87.00 a night it is well worth it. I would not recomend staying with more than 3 people, as the rooms are a little small. However, they are clean. The people at the front desk not overly friendly, but they were not rude - just like most of the people that work on South Beach. The location is great and the restaurant downstairs is to die for (try the thai noodles in a peanut sauce). The pool is a joke, so don't even try it! Overall - you get what you pay for, and it is well accomidating.

Not that bad.

The rooms were small but what do you expect for an expedia price? All we needed was a place to sleep. I would rather be able to go shopping and go out to the clubs than spend hundreds of dollars on a room that you only send 10% of your time in.

How to ruin a vacation....!!!

...unbelievable that these people are still in business!!!
We had booked through our agency an oceanfront corner and had a written confirmation with conf. code and all, but it was totally useless.
They had no more rooms left. When I enquired about the possibility of being re-imbursed the lady at the front desk only replied by saying "you are talking and I am hearing" meaning....I'm wasting my breath. These arrogant, unhelpful and displeasing people should not be allowed in the tourism industry. I have already sent a letter of complaint to the Miami Tourism Office.
GO ANYWHERE ELSE BUT NOT HERE!!!

very, very small

from A TripAdvisor Member
The room was much, much smaller than I imagined. There is literally no room to walk around and the bathroom is tiny. The bed was almost too small for 2 people to sleep in. However, the room was clean. The front office staff is not very friendly, but they weren't rude either, although I did not have need to talk to them much. Good location, but you could probably get a better room for the money without going too far away.

The Worst!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place sucks. The front desk staff is terribly rude-especially the strawberry blonde that works in the evenings. Beds are the most uncomfortable I have experienced and I have stayed all over the world in budget accomodations. Toilet runs constantly unless you reach into the tank each after each flush. We will never ever stay here again even if it is the last place in Miami.

Its just fine.. if you just need a room

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you are only looking for a room to sleep in South Beach for a very cheap price on the strip (we paid 87), you will be fine here. The rooms are small, the decoration old and shabby, the hallways a little scary, but the rooms are clean, and air condiditoned and they have beds and working pumbing. The staff was neutral to helpful.

If you want to spend you money dining and playing, and don't plan on being in your room much. you wont go wrong.

AWFUL

from A TripAdvisor Member
AWFUL!!! If you want a nice clean place to lay your head down this is not it! The staff is terribly rude, and the hotel is dirty. We cancelled our reservations and found another place to stay. The hotle is a mess! We are not "5 star" travelers, but this was bottom of the barrell, even for a room just to sleep and bathe in. It was a big dissapointment.

DO NOT STAY HERE!

Staying here is a great way to ruin your vacation. First when you walk in your welcomed by an out-of-order elevation. (speaking to the staff it has been this way for months) right there, we should have known they do not take care of the property. Upon opening the door to our room, the at first unbearable smell (which you get used to 1/2 hour later and which is a welcome sign upon revisiting the room every time). Run down college dorm room would be a good review of the room. The one plus a dorm refrigerator. The bathroom was very small, we did not have shampoo. The only thing the room came with was a bar of soap. No hairdryer, iron, coffee maker, mouthwash, moisturizer, which we were accustomed to. The staff was very rude. The wall paper thin, good luck sleeping. The cable TV had about 6 viewable channels, which included only ESPN and HBO. The pool was about 30 feet by 7 feet. My car would barely fit in it. HIGHLY not reccommended. Unless on spring break and need a budget hotel. and yet I would still go to some place OH ya, hot water for a shower in the morning was seldom available!

Top Local Tips for Miami Beach

Save money Save money by booking through some online company and do it early. Try to avoid popular months. We went in May and it was perfect.

Better pay a little more for a room ... When you go online to book a hotel room, it's better to pick a hotel that is well known even if you have to pay a little bit more money for a room.

Don't need rental car A rental car in SoBe is very inpratical and expensive (like it would be for example in Manhattan.) Taxis are plentiful and most areas are in walking distance. Cabs from MIA International Airport to South Beach are at a fixed rate and always available.
