We stayed at the hotel in Oct 2003. Upon booking a Deluxe we were told we would have ocean view.. I got peeling paint view. The rooms are clean, but basic. The service is excellent. I have stayed in dozens of 3 and 4 star hotels and This is a 2.5 star hotel... not even close to a 4 star. The Rendezvous on the Beach restaurant serves non-gourmet food for gourmet prices... a rip-off. The restaurant staff accost people strolling in front of the hotel.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Beacon Hotel

Beacon Hotel Great Hotel!!!!

from travelgrog
Beacon Hotel was a great little hotel located right in the middle of everything South Beach has to offer. I stayed at the Beacon for two nights and enjoyed my stay. The hotel is very clean and the staff is very nice. No pool at the hotel but it is right across the street from the ocean. My entire experience was very positive and I would recommend staying at this hotel.

Best location!!! Really in the heart of Deco!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Before going every hotel boasted "in the heart of deco", but Beacon really is the best location. the staff was great!!! the view from the room was EXCELLENT!! we were on the 3rd floor (oceanfront) but could not see the water. The staff was more that helpful and moved us upto the 5th floor. The bathroom could be better...it brings the hotel down...but everything was great!!! If you happen to rent a car you can park at a municipal lot because the hotel valet is $18!!! We were there for 2 nights and parked at the garage for $6/night.
The top beach spot (8th street) was right across the street from the hotel.
If you want to enjoy what "south beach" is all about this is the place to be!!! The complimentary cofee/tea in the morning in the lounge is a great way to start the day!!!
I would go there again!!!

Good location and smart

from Grapefan
Having read many mixed reviews about the Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive we arrived at the Beacon with some trepidation. We got what we expected...a smart, clean, stylish hotel right in the midst of all the evening action. But with a room to the side it wasn't noisy. This hotel has kept it's standards and I would definitely stay there again. Breakfast next door at Johnny Rockets was a nice touch also.

Seen Better

The Beacon Hotel is a nice place overall. The small catches get you though. If you have your own vehicle its going to cost you $18.00 a day to park it. No one tells you this, and its not said anywhere. Your room will have a safe in it, you better use it because use it or not its going to cost you $2.00 a night. Another great accomidation they don't tell you about. Beware the free continental breakfast, it sounds good to you find out that they just give you a coupon to go next door to Johnny Rockets and get a cheap lil meal. Slightly embaressing. The rooms are very nice, marbel all over the place, sheered windows. Very nice, but jsut remember all of the staff speaks spanish, not all speak english. Espcially housekeepers. But hey its just a hotel, the beach is great, the parties are fun, and the ocean is GORGEOUS. Make sure you stop by wet willies, we loved it. (CALL A CAB) :)

would stay there again

I just recently stayed at the Beacon Hotel for one night 5-10-04 after returning from a cruise. We arrived at the hotel and were pleasantly suprised at its prime location! Directly on Ocean Drive and just across the street from the beach! It was a quaint hotel with a little bar (beware of ordering from drinks at the bar in the lobby! A styrofoam cup of coke was $4.00 with tip!!!!). Free internet service was available to us so that we were able to check in for our flights the next day! They gave us complimentary towels to use at the beach.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
The room was pretty decent and clean. Somewhat small, but it didn't bother my friend and I who were there for such a short time. The bathroom was a little old looking and the toilet had a slight clog which was fixed immediately after our call down to the front desk.
Overall, we were happy with our choice to stay there and would stay there again....maybe a little longer next time.

Classical

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just got back from South Beach where I stayed 3 nights at the Beacon (4/28-5/2 2004). The Beacon is a very nice hotel with a classical feel to it. Furniture and decoration is not the minimalist contemporary type you see in many bars and hotels in South Beach. The lobby plays classical music and sports an upright piano. The rooms are very clean, but small like most other Art Deco hotels in that area. The staff is very friendly. The location is perfect, except for the fact that that whole strip (6th-9th Ocean Dr.) is a tourist trap, and the hotel restaurant hostess will still try to convince you to sit down and eat even after they realize that you're walking into the hotel because you're STAYING THERE! No noise problems, but we stayed on the 3rd floor, away from the street. I would recommend it if you want to be at the heart of the tourist area, but stay in a non-party hotel.

Very nice place

from Leslie850
This was a very nice hotel and perfect location on South Beach. We had a 2nd floor corner room that looked at the alley. It was quiet, clean and comfortable and like all the other SoBe hotels smaller rooms than a regular hotel elsewhere. The bathroom was also small and the water pressure was very weak but that too was expected. Staff was friendly and helpful. Valet parking is high, $18 per day with unlimited in and out. Good choice for 90 bucks on expedia.

Beautiful service, Good location, great room and right price!

We just came back from our wonderful vacation from Miami. Before going there, I read reviews about the Beacon hotel and they really freaked us out and thought about spending more money to stay other luxury? hotels, but after all, we have decided to stay at the Beacon for 3nights ($99/night great deal!!!). And... We don't really know who wrote those mean comments but the Beacon hotel was excellent! Nice hospitalites, free internet at the business center, clean quiet good size room (we have stayed at the 5th floor. 2 full size beds) , great location (beach is right there!), free breakfast (at the next door restaurant ,next block from the famous New's cafe, starts at 9am. We sat outside and we have enjoyed the people watching!), free beach towel, fitness center (pretty new 3 machines) etc....... (if I have to write something negative, there is no frig in the room and bath room windows don't open, but who cares?) I recommend the Beacon hotel to everybody who don't want to spend a lot of money($200 or up) to stay Ritz or other luxury hotels, but want to enjoy beautiful boutique hotel experience.

3 star, yes. 4 star definitely not.

from A TripAdvisor Member
Expedia and several others rated this hotel 4 star, citing it's maticulous rennovation a few years back. The lobby and lounge area are indeed spectactular, however the 4 star experience stops there. The first night we were put in a room on the first floor. AVOID FIRST FLOOR ROOMS AT THIS HOTEL. There are two of them, and both enjoy a view of the alleyway where the kitchen garbage is kept and the noise of the hotel laundry next door. The hotel was completely booked our first night, but the staff (who were extremely helpful and friendly) did manage to swap us for a better room the next night. While the second room was a dramatic improvement, it was still a far cry from a 4 star hotel. The bathrooms are run down (shower stalls, no tub) and the furnishings are sparse. I would give this hotel 4 stars for location and staff and 2-3 stars for accomodations.

Mixed Feelings

from bradowpc
Great location, but you're much better off expecting a three-star experience. This is by no means a luxury hotel as its website might you to believe. Its mainly a good choice for vacationers who can't afford $450/night but who want to be in a halfway decent hotel in the middle of the action. Its not a good place for business people at all. Free breakfast service doesn't start until 9 AM. Expect very long wait times to get your car from valet (even on a weekday morning with almost no traffic it took nearly 30 mins). The rooms, bathrooms, closets, and the elevator are all quite small. The windows in my room on the 5th floor could not be opened to let in fresh air and there was no fan in the bathroom so when the person staying with me had to use it the smell was unbearable, even in the bedroom. Water pressure in my room was also weak. The service was always slow but very friendly. I wouldn't stay in a regular room at the Beacon for more than $180 per night under any circumstances.

Top Local Tips for Miami Beach

Don't eat on the strip The restaurants right on the strip are not great and way overpriced, go back from the strip a couple of blocks - it doesn't have the look but you'll likely get a much better meal and for a much better price. A special mention here goes to Caffe Milano for having the temerity to serve a microwave lasagne that I wouldn't feed to my dog for $25 and then add a 20% gratuity to the bill.

Car Park If you don't want vallet parking there is a multi storey car park/parking garage just off Ocean Drive down 7th avenue (I think). Very reasonble daily rate.

Late Spring & Great Deals to Miami Flight costs to Miami start dropping in the late spring. Along with falling airline prices are also falling hotel prices. If you plan a trip in mid to late May you can really snag some great deals before the intense summer heat sets in.
