Historical Traveller Reviews of Whitelaw Hotel

appears trendy at first, but somewhat old

from A TripAdvisor Member
i was extremely excited about staying at the whitelaw hotel. from the website, it appeared that the hotel was very trendy and luxurious. however, i have to say i was slightly disappointed. Pros: the location was absolutely perfect. it was right in the middle of things. Cons: very tiny place. definitely a boutique style hotel. hotel is not very efficiently run, like a major chain. we had room 101, right near the lobby. which definitely was problematic because the lobby plays techno music alll night long until 4am. LOUD music. i went for my spring break and even i, a college student, had to admit that the music got a tad annoying at times. our tv didn't work. we reported this to the hotel at least 3 times. nothing happened. telephone didn't work. and our toilet clogged. a maintenance person had to come twice to unclog it. it wasn't even the problems of the hotel but rather how management responded. they were very, "eh" about it. the entire time i was there, the manager was out. don't stay there if you are expecting something luxurious. we got a good deal and the location was great. but other than that, don't expect anything too grand.

A Modern Classic

I cannot imagine staying anywhere but the Whitelaw whenever I'm in Miami. This hotel has such style (white vinyl furnishings, chrome lighting, etc.), but still remains unpretentious. The whiteness is soothing, as are the fluffy comforts of the bedding. I also appreciated happy hour and the continental breakfast. I only wish my stay were longer.

This Hotel Has Seen Better Days

Seemed like it used to be nice. My room was clean - bed and sheets great. Curtains had burn holes, furnitre was heavily stained, bathroom shower leaked all over floor and floor was heavily mildewed, bathroom tiles had graffiti. Hotel staff was friendly, however this hotel is located in a beach resort - and they have no beach towels to provide - but offer them for sale for $20. Much better deals exist in South Beach. Also the hotel had very nosiy guests - young partiers - so dont expect a quiet night.

The place to be

Cool atmosphere, friendly and informative staff, great location and just blocks from the beach. This winter marked my third year coming to South Beach and the Whitelaw Hotel. I wouldn?' choose to stay anywhere else. The aspect of the hotel that I like the most is that you literally only need to go as far as the hotel lobby to find a hip yet relaxed scene. And when you're ready to hit the town, the knowledgeable staff will make sure that you're plugged in to what's going on for that night.

Great Hotel At An Even Better Price

My stay at the Whitelaw Hotel was better than expected. They lived up to all ammenities listed on the website. The all white rooms where so cool and refreshing. The staff was great and extremely helpful with all reservations for dinner and water activities. They seemed to know exactly what we were looking for. Plus the location of the hotel is prime and the price is right. I'm definetely staying at the Whitelaw for my next trip in February

No Sleep Here!

from tealbird
We stayed at the Whitelaw for 4 nights. The rooms are small and all white. I think I had a total of 12 hours of sleep the whole 4 days because the walls were so thin you could hear everything and I mean everything. Halls were dirty carpeting and felt uneven under foot, and they were noisy at night, people banging on doors, and the next room had rap music pounding til midnight one night. In the room above us you could hear people walking back and forth. Housekeeping was terrible, all they did was make the beds, I used a glass the first day and it was still sitting in the same spot the day we left, my husband walked in the room one day when they were supposed to be cleaning and they were reading my magazines, which makes me wonder what else they were checking out of ours. You have to pay a $100.00 deposit when you check in, which is refundable, and beware, they charge you an extra $5.00 per day, for the complimentary breakfast and free drink deals. The window in the room, which fortunately had a blind, faced an ugly dirty vacant building next door, and there was garbage strewn about the alley. There were big plates of cat food placed down there for all the alley cats also. The staff was ok, but some seemed to have an attitude. The only nice thing was it was only a block to Ocean Drive. I wouldn't recommend this hotel, even if you have to pay extra find a nicer place!

We stayed at this hotel for the inaugural Miami Marathon, and oh boy, was that a mistake! During our three day stay, the cleaning lady did not clean and left all the dirty glasses in the room. The air conditioning really did not work and made a ton of noise. The construction was so shabby that you could hear all the footsteps and voices. Someone threw up outside our room during the first night, and nobody bothered to clean up the mess the entire weekend. The hallway was not vacuumed the entire time we were there, and the floor was the filthiest I've seen in ages. The bathroom tiles were full of mildew, and obviously nobody bothered to clean the bathroom.

This was by far the dirtiest place I've ever stayed! Motel 6 or Rodeway Inn would have been better!

Great location, rather hip, but some deficiencies...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Although the staff was helpful and friendly, and we got a great deal for our stay, the hotel was very noisy: it seemed to be a club first and a hotel second. While the "mod" touches were very nice, the rooms were small, the floor somewhat dirty, and the staff did not wash/change drinking glasses and only once during our 4-day stay did they replenish the shampoo. The rooms also had dim lighting, and thin walls/ceilings made for very noisy nights. The continental breakfast was not bad, but having only one table meant that most people will eat on their laps in the crowded lobby. As someone who appreciates design (which drew me to the hotel in the first place), my advice is to stay elsewhere and come visit the Whitelaw for drinks in the evening.

South Beach at its best

from A TripAdvisor Member
Those who don't like this place have the wrong expectations. It's old, the rooms are small, there's no pool. But it's clean, sleek, stylish, and in the very heart of South Beach, steps from the beach, shopping, restaurants and night life. Are you really going to need a stairmaster?

Great Staff and Location...thin walls

from fsufan
I stayed at the Whitelaw for 3 nights for New Year's with 2 friends.
The rate was inflated due to New Year's, but was still less expensive than some others in South Beach. The staff was VERY helpful, sending an e-mail prior to stay with things to do for New Year's. The location is great...right on Collins in the heart of South Beach. Ocean Drive and the famous News Cafe is just one block away. The only downfall is that the walls are VERY THIN! Our neighbors came in around 5am and we could hear every word of their conversation. The rooms are small, as is the bathroom (I guess this may be the norm in South Beach, though). Also there is no shower curtain and the bathroom floor gets wet. I would stay here again if I got a cheap rate.

Top Local Tips for Miami

Cabs The flat rate from the airport is a law. Don't let them tell you it isn't. Some cabs will take you he "long way" to show you the sights.

Art Deco Walking Tour Take the Miami Design Preservation League walking tour that leaves most days at 10:30 am from the Art Deco Welcome Center on 10th and Ocean. It's $20 and about 2 hours and is very interesting!

Expensive restaurants on Ocean Drive It's really cool to sit outside at one of the restaurants on Ocean Drive, but you'll pay for the view. Don't be shocked when your bill for a burger and fries is $18
