We booked a room at the Palms via Orbitz for what we thought was a fair rate. However, when we arrived at the hotel we were informed there would be MANDATORY ADDITIONAL CHARGES of $17.00 per day for parking and $11.50 for use of hotel grounds (pool, beach, towel, etc.). We tried to cancel the reservations with Orbitz but hotel cancellation policy would not allow cancellation. Contacted Orbitz but they were of NO help. Hotel would also not provide any help. The mandatory charges where NOT included in the information listed by Orbitz. The hotel apparently refuses to give Orbitz this information! Hotel is nice, however, you need to be aware of these hidden charges.

We stayed at the Palms the week prior to Memorial Day. Granted that weekend tends to draw substantial riff raff for the upcoming hip hop awards, but we chose the Palms to avoid the chaos. The private beach was by far the nicest part of this hotel, although we were asked by the hotel manager if we had been smoking marijuana on the beach, because apparently a guest had smelled it. Why he asked us, I have no idea, but I found the fact that I was even asked somewhat offensive. The room, definitely mediocre. Very small, plain, could have used little more art deco flare. There are no balconies in this hotel, which I find odd given it's beachfront. Poolside bar and gazebo were nice, bartender was very friendly. Other than that, there was nothing fabulous about this hotel. My trip ended with the concierege calling me at 10 am to remind me that check-out was at 12 noon, which to me, is just obnoxious. There are far more impressive places to stay in South Beach for the same price....the Palms is nothing more than average.

This hotel was so unexpected, the level of service and attention to detail was so fantastic, you actually felt that you were staying in a little boutique hotel.
Fantastic location, pool, food and drink and the most amazing breakfasts by the pool. And the New Years Eve celebrations were just stunning!
Would highly recommend this gorgeous hotel with fantastic large rooms (ours was a standard room and was huge!) to anyone, its on the beach, on the boardwalk and just far enough away from the noise of Ocean Drive for peace and quiet but close enough if you want to get into the action! We are going back again this year.
Fantastic location, pool, food and drink and the most amazing breakfasts by the pool. And the New Years Eve celebrations were just stunning!

My experience at this hotel is quite different to the other reviews I have read. Hopefully it will be helpful. Upon arrival, the valet staff were courteous and friendly. Checking in was a non-event, always a good thing, although, more friendliness is nice too. We were struck with an odd odor that permeated the hotel throughout our stay.
Our room was small and moderately clean. Under the table next to the beds and the window area were un-vacuumed. The bathroom was incredibly small but workable for no more than 2 people in the room. Toiletries were replaced some days and not others. The walkin closet was great! as was the beach-very windy during our time there (4/18-21/04)
The worse part of our experience were the beds--very very hard, and the pillows very very flat
We did not sleep throughout our stay due to the incredibly bad flat/hard beds. While the view was great from the hotel lobby and pool, the pool is not the same pool on the web, which shows
an infinity pool. I discovered this pool exists at the National Hotel down the road, their sister hotel.
Everything having an automatic 18% gratuity was also disturbing. The hotel hosted a lot of events during our stay and we were not able to enjoy the porch outside. We ate breakfast once, while expensive, it was also sub-par. I was told I could not have an egg-white omelette, the bread items were hard, the bacon and sausage were cold. I could not find a waiter and had to keep getting up to go find her. Yet I had to pay her an 18% tip on my bill--more than $40.00 for breakfast! The best people we met were the bartender inside-great service and personality and the head concierge. Lastly, was the experience with our car. On Tuesday, the car was brought to me with 2 holes in the side of the leather
and a scrape that matched the keys the valet's keep on their side. I complained to the person, he did not understand much English and the supervisor told me not to worry as it was a rental. While rental agencies may not pick up on it, it is still not appropriate to have had that damage occur.
Overall, I would say this was not a great stay and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I stayed in several hotels and plan to write about my experience in each as I took notes on each. I hope this is useful but detailed feedback for future guests. Also, a long walk to the heart of SoBe, not one you would do at night, a whole different crowd emerges in the evening outside of the hotel.

PROS: Overall a relaxing beach hotel. Got a good rate on Orbitz. The room is nicer than the picture of the room on the website. Nice modern/elegant and very clean. I'm a clean freak (i.e. I notice mold on the grout or grime on the not adequately scrubbed toilet) and this place passed with colors. The food at the restaurant was yummy and fairly priced. When I ordered room service it came superfast and cooked to my request. The people were friendly. I definitely didn't think that they were over friendly or too in your face as some have written. It did seem like housekeeping was always in the hallway. I think since this hotel is not too close to the downtown scene it is much quieter. Good cable tv.
CONS: There was no curtain on the bathroom window which was very close to adjacent hotels, I could see into their rooms so I guess they could see into mine, so I ducked a lot. If you fill the tub with water for a bath, you'll notice that its a strange lime green color - no odor just a strange hue. I got a mean letter from the mini bar attendant because I moved aside a few cans of soda to make room for to go food I ordered from their restaurant -- had ordered too much and wanted to keep it for a snack. They threatened a charge for my "crime" (which I do often and never got in trouble for -- the items displaced were non-perishable and promptly returned to its proper place) and when I called the front desk to complain, they said there wouldn't be a charge but when I checked out there was a charge but they promptly took it off (still a hassle and left a bad taste in my mouth -- to deal with such things on vvacation!). At the beach the attendant does not make your lounge chair for you (i.e lay down towels and tuck them in) as they do at some hotels and they wouldn't put up the umbrellas saying it was too windy although all the other establishments on the beach had them up (mind you you are paying a mandatory surcharge daily for these sevices). Also no room turndown service which I suppose can be a pro or a con.
Overall I would recommend this place to friends although I myself may not stay here again since I like trying out new hotels and south beach has many.

Stayed at the Palms from April 8 - 15...wife and two children (9 & 11) another couple with their 5 yr old...The hotel rooms are small, but you don't go to S. Beach for the rooms....Two full size beds made it tough on sleeping for 7 nights...but its vacation....The grounds were very tropical and made for a wonderful time....Nice pool are with plenty of chairs and umbrellas....Best Beach on the strip with break walls on both sides....The water was beautiful....snorkeling provided colorful fish right by the rocks....Walked the two miles to S. Beach every day and saw no nicer beach or pool area...Quiet and family orientated....except for the Europeans who baith daily, "sunny-side-up" My 9 yr old learned what thongs looked also!!!...Be sure to eat on Lincoln Rd....Carneveale was the best!!!
The Palms staff was very accomadating and not alot of rules that you must follow...Kids swam in pool day & night...we brought pizza in from pizza hut....and wine from outside with no problems....The food and drinks are $$$...but....a Denny's right next door for breakfast for kids....NO wild parties....Clean rooms and tropical atmosphere gave this small hotel a thumbs up...

I stayed at the Palms in March 2004 for Spring Break with 3 other girls. The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The staff is great. Every time we walked out of the Palms we felt like princesses, the doormen would open the doors for us and then tell us how beautiful we all looked as they called us a cab. The concierges were great, they hooked us up with complimentary passes to all the clubs. The only way to describe the layout of the Palms is to tell you that it was nice enough for a photoshoot to be there. (hot models hanging out in the pool, what more can a girl ask for!) It is a walk to get to the heart of south beach but it's not a bad cab ride. We loved everything about the Palms.

Just attended a wedding at the Palms and enjoyed every minute of it.
The hotel itself is beautiful...spacious room, large walk-in closet, beautiful ocean view (worth the extra money). The pool was great, nice and clean. The beach was great, very helpful staff on the beach to get you what you need. The only complaint I have is that one of the main elevators, the only ones to go to the 10th floor where I was staying, broke down on Saturday early afternoon and the management waited till Monday to fix it because it was cheaper to do during the week. I thought that was poor management skills. Regardless of the cost, you should fix it immediately. You've got guests that are paying good money to stay there, and you are being cheap about fixing an elevator!?!?
Especially since there were approximately 4 weddings going on in one day! It made it very difficult to get from the 10th floor to the lobby.
Other than that, this hotel is worth the extra money! Short cab ride to all the sights and sounds of South Beach, helpful, courteous staff. I would definitely return!

The Palms was definitely a relaxing hotel. The location isn't as good as some of the hotels further down closer to Lincoln Road but despite the long walk we went there almost every night. The restaurant was good but we were annoyed they stopped serving breakfast so early. We found ourselves rushing out of the room in the morning so we could get some food. Unfortunately, we had some minor things that added up and didn't make our impression the greatest. 1. The maid used an un-godly amount of ammonia in our room every day. 2. The day of our check out the hotel gave us a hard time about a late check out. They made us call back 3 times to see if it was available. When I explained we had a later flight and all we needed was a room to shower (something most hotels do) they could not help. 3. My wife and I were on our anniversary and we were hoping for an upgrade but they didn't have one available.
Overall I was not thrilled with the management of the hotel but we were pleased with our experience just a little turned off. If I got a good rate I would go back.

I have just returned from a 8 day stay in Florida in which the first part was spent at The Palms Hotel. My husband and I had such a wonderful time, the staff were so friendly and helpful we were sorry to leave. The Palms has none of the pretentions of many of the other South Beach hotels, which is really refreshing. The staff are genuinely helpful and the level of service, quality of food in the restaurant and the general feel of the place is welcoming and comfortable. Whilst this may not be the most fashionable/modernly furnished hotel on South Beach, I found this quite refreshing and would definately return. We had an amazing ocean view and a good size room for a reasonable rate. A great holiday. Definately worth a visit!
Relaxing paradise

The first minute you step inside this beautiful hotel, it's like paradise! We spent four nights at this hotel and everything and everyone more than surpassed our expectations. The grounds inside and out are very beautiful, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The backyard of the hotel is like a small haven....palms trees, hammocks, birds and flowers...a real paradise! And we can't forget the beach, only a few steps from the hotel!!...very beautiful and relaxing. If you're looking to find a place to relax you've found it.
Top Local Tips for Miami
Car parking Parking using the valet is about $25 per day. However, two blocks North is a parking lot where you pay about $6 per day, meter enforced between 8AM and 6PM only. You might save some money on parking if you don't mind a public parking solution.
BIG FISH BEST FISH IN MIAMI AT BIG FISH!
Save up some major $ for this trip! We were determined to have a good time and not worry about how much we were spending while on vaca. However, you get raped money-wise in this city. if there's two of you, plan on $250 spending money per day, at least. We didn't buy anything but meals, drinks and booze/cork screw/condoms at CVS for consumption in our room (as drinking in restaurants/bars was really adding up!). By all means, we didn't order steaks and martinis, either. It was fun, but we wished we'd stayed in Key West a little longer and only spent 2 days in South Beach.
