Dirty cramped disappointing...

from Pug79
We stayed at the Chelsea for a few days in December. I wish I had checked Trip Advisor first. The first problem was the airport shuttle - the first one drove right past us waving and yelling. We had to wait an hour for the next one and this time we ran into traffic to make sure it stopped. Then the fun began when we got to the Chelsea. There was 4 of us in the room and no space to breathe! That was really the least of our concerns. The music played all night. Even that could have been expected for South Beach, but the worst part was the dirt! The room was not clean when we arrived. The first night we spilled some wine on the sheets and it was there the entire time. We caught a glimpse of the maid making a bed by standing on the pillows in bare feet and shaking out the blanket! We brought in some sand from the beach the first day and had to spend ther rest of our time wearing shoes because the floors and showers were not cleaned once. The dark hallways freaked us out as did some of the hotel "bar" regulars. We will never stay here again and would warn anyone we talked to to avoid it too.

Would not recommend this hotel.

After reading some of the reviews, we thought that the complaints were coming from picky people and decided to book a room anyway. Upon arrival, we found that the room we had booked was given to someone else and that we would have to stay in smaller, smoking room or find another hotel. While waiting in line to discuss these problems with check in person, two other couples were told that the rooms they had reserved had been given away to others as well. They had no other rooms and those couples were forced to stay at another hotel! The hotel room had absolutely no amenities - no dresser, no stand to put clothes on, no coffee machine, etc, etc. The floors were as one put it - completely warped and in terrible condition. Would not ever stay here again. One positive thing is that the people working at the hotel are very nice, though not very helpful.

Horrendous Hotel

Before our recent trip to Miami Beach, we had read some reviews on the Hotel Chelsea on Washington Street in South Miami Beach which had already made us somewhat apprehensive before we went. Well, the reviews were all accurate and the place was horrible. What made things worse was that we had booked through Priceline; so we were stuck with having to stay there for our 4 night stay or lose all our money. The corredors were as dark as caves--probably to hide the dirty carpets and old , decrepit fixtures. The room was tiny. The air conditioning system made us feel as though we were in a wind tunnel. Made service was very unpredictable. One night we had to wait until 9 PM for the room to be made up. Then when they did clean, they did a lousy job. There was a dead fly on our bathroom floor which stayed there throughout the stay without being swept up. To make matters worse, when we checked out they made us pay a $5.00 per day "resort fee"----some resort! Oh, I don't want to forget the almost constant noise that we endured one evening from the property next door which penetrated our walls and windows and left us sleepless all night. We had paid $95.00 per night and were totally "ripped off" by both the hotel and Priceline which rated this dump a three star hotel which means that we will never, I repeat never, use Priceline again. Take my advice and stay away. There are many more beatutiful properties in South Beach. From what we saw, we would either have stayed on upper Collins Ave. or on Ocean Drive--stay away from Washington, especially this place.

Thank U

Dark and depressing

from A TripAdvisor Member
By the time I read the Trip Advisor reviews here, it was too late to cancel our reservations, so I prepared for the worst. The lobby can hardly be called a lobby at all. It's tiny and not well maintained.
There is a small bar near the reception desk where they play thudding music all day and night. The hallways are ridiculously dark--making it almost impossible to see the room number (as well as the dirt probably lurking there). The room was tiny and just had one window that overlooked the roof of another building. The room was also too dark, with only a measly little nightsstand light and a light over one of the beds. The bathroom wasn't too bad--pretty cool design and slate floors--but again, was small. There are NO facilities on the premises: no where to eat, get a soda, workout, etc. and the yoga on the beach that they promised doesn't exist. The continental breakfast is also a joke: a few muffins, some stale white bread, and cornflakes.

Agree with the many Poor Reviews! Worst hotel in twenty Yrs.

I travel for a living. This was the worst experience I have ever been through at any Hotel! I never could find the hotel restaurant they LIED about! Happy hour a joke with little seating. Completely renovated in Fengshui accents must mean from a garage sale! Dirty rooms. Walls were not all the same color as in patchwork repairs. Cold showers are a little rough in the morning. The concierge services consisted of the person who wears all hats! Might add always busy any never solved our problems only caused more. All this while my brand new expensive silk longsleeve shirt vanished before I could put it on! While on the topic of honesty, BEWARE your pre-paid reservation, I was charged a resort fee before they would let me leave! Charged me for items in the ugly, filthy sub-mini bar I would never purchase! Save yourself! Run, don't walk to another hotel! ALSO BEWARE THEY ARE PART OF THE SOUTH BEACH HOTEL GROUP INC. THEY HAVE HOTELS WITH OTHER NAMES I.E. THE WHITELAW AND A COUPLE OF OTHERS.

Home away from Home

from LMD2010
We have been staying at the Chelsea every time we come to Miami for the past year and a half. We are normally there every 2-3 months. For New Years Eve we could not get in so we booked a room at the Waldorf Towers. We were not in town for 1 hour before we walked over to the Chelsea and booked a room for the rest of our stay. We could stay at the Waldorf for one night but that was it. We had to get back HOME to the Chelsea. Yes the hallways are dark but that adds to the sexiness of South Beach. Everyone from Darryl the manager, to the front desk concierges, to the bartenders make you feel at home and special. The housekeeping staff keeps our rooms immaculate everytime that we stay there. I would recommed this hotel to ANYONE and I will NEVER again stay anywhere else. We love the Chelsea!!! Lynn & Sontil

OK Stay for a quick vacation

I really enjoyed the convenience of Hotel Chelsea. It was in the middle of everything. The room looks exactly like the pictures on the internet, only much smaller. The only thing that I did not like was that the hallway was extremely dark. I think it was the type of lighting. I would visit again, although it may not be my first choice because of the size of the room. Oh, and the continental breakfast really means continental....there was only toast, one type of muffin, one type cereal, orange and cranberry juices.

Worst hotel I ever stayed in...

from A TripAdvisor Member
When I arrived at the Chelsea with three other friends, I was told the our hotel room with two double beds was not available and we would have to stay in a room with one double bed... this meant four people in a one bed. Of course with this being New Years eve nothing else was available. I complained enough to get them to change our room the next day. The maid never showed up the four days we stayed there.... we had two bath towels for four people, we had to fetch new towels every morning and even had to change our own bed sheets. The hallways are so dark it reminded us of a bath house. The rooms are very small . My bill was wrong at check out and charged for three cars in valet for four days when I only drove one car to Miami. I was told by the clerk that It was my responsibility to prove that I did not check in three cars. In the end, found out that the clerk let two people valet their car under my room number and did not get my permission and expected me to pay. The floors in the rooms are very uneven and warped, the bamboo shades do not keep the light out, the air conditioner did not keep the room cool. Many times no one was at the front desk for assistance. I will never stay here or recommend this place to anyone.

Top Local Tips for Miami

prepare to spend Good Food, but very expensive. Beer is about $7 for cheap american. Frozen drinks ran about $10. We like the Grill Fish and Deseart Resturant Chocolate.

Dining There is no free Shuttle to your hotel- we got there on a Wednesday and they said that the shuttle service is not running? Cab ride to hotel is about $55 US. You should get a group rate, if there are only a few of you..then get other travellers who are heading the same way to car pool and split the Cab fare. Dining is pretty expensive, we didnt see a McDonald's for a while!

Don't want to do the Club Scene????? You must stop by Mambo's on Ocean Drive. The food and drinks were o.k., what makes this place is the music and performers/dancers.
