Historical Traveller Reviews of The Hotel
Very hip for a decent price
Stayed here in early February for two nights. The hotel is very cool-looking, the roof-top pool is nice. It has a lot of style and the people are good looking. It's very New York. The restaurant was really great. The things I didn't like were the fact that the room was very small, the bathroom even smaller with no place to put your things. Also, the airconditioning or some system kept making noise and would wake me up. I ended up buying ear plugs and then it was fine. Overall, it's a great choice if you want something more hip but don't want to pay a really high price.
Over the MLK holiday weekend, my husband and I stayed at the Hotel in South Beach designed by Todd Oldham. The lobby, restaurant and bar area are funky and colorful - very inviting and representative of the area. On the front porch of the hotel, there are chairs and couches on which to relax and hang out with great people watching. The rooms are basic and functional. No frills, and the bed wasn't very comfy (but we were spoiled by the beds at the Biltmore in Coral Gables where we stayed several nights before). The bathroom is very neat, and we especially enjoyed the rain shower. At the bar, they have a frozen mojito drink that you have to try. It is served with plastic ice cubes that glow green, which makes for a not only tasty but fun drink. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, Wish. The service was very attentive and the food was delicious. The location of the hotel is great - only steps away from neat shops and a block or so away from Ocean drive (visiting the News Cafe is a must as well as walking by Versace's mansion). A great, fun place to stay!

There was nothing special about "The Hotel". I stayed there the weekend before Valentine's Day. The room was nice but I certainly was not blown away. The NOISE LEVEL is a big problem and is not exaggerated by previous reviews. Bring your ear plugs. The service is very average. They DO NOT go out of their way here to accommodate you.
The location was the only plus. Right in the middle of shopping and a few blocks from NEWS cafe (which is a great food spot)

Stayed at The Hotel - great staff, nice valets, cute room - lots of space to put your stuff, bathroom really cute. Butttt- noisy as can be- walls are very thin, elevator so noisy- I would not stay there again because of the noise- but the location was great. I loved everything but the thin walls - it is such a shame about that- oh and the roof top pool- very cool- but not enough seating- its small- I loved it-
We stayed at this Hotel in 2003. One thing that struck me was how friendly the staff was. So when I read some of the other reviews I was surprised. The front desk staff was helpful. The bartender remembered us and what we drank after the first night. The rooftop pool/bar was excellent and we were well taken care of. The room were nice except for the door slamming noises that seemed to echo through the halls. The restaraunt was nice, the food good if a liitle overpriced. The bellman even had our cab waiting the morning we left. I found the service to be above average and would stay there again.
We had a couture room which was a good size and the bathroom was huge. No problems with noise, although South Beach as a whole was quite quiet when we went in early December. Agree with other reviewers about the annoying cooking smells by the rooftop pool - it would be a gorgeous place to lounge but the smell ruins it.
One thing that no one mentions (I think it's new) is the open air rooftop Spire Bar. This is fantastic - pink and orange floorboards, squishy white sofas, mellow music, great views and delicious neon martinis. Think it's only open Thursday to Saturday, but one of the best and most atmospheric hotel bars I've been to.
Poor Attitude from Staff
Like other reviewers I found the staff in general to be offhand with the exception of the concierge, David, who was friendly and helpful.
The walls are very thin and you could make out conversations in adjacent rooms. Pool was beautiful but spoiled by overlooking the rooftops of restaurants and by the incessant loud dance music that was played- the staff might consider that not everyone wants to hear this type of music when trying to relax beside a pool.
The restaurant WISH served great food but it would have been nice if the waiter had told us about the specials. Would be reluctant to recommend this hotel to anyone aged over 25.
Overrated and Noisey
The Hotel of South Beach has a lot of problems. First of all, the walls are paper thin. You will be able to hear everything that happens on your floor (including the very loud elevator). Second, the picturesque rooftop pool is ruined by the clouds of smelly smoke coming from the smokestack of the restaurant next door. Seriously, you will come back from the pool smelling like hamburger grease. Third, the front desk staff is unaccomodating. For example, they refused tell us whether we could get a late check out until the last minute, at which time they refused to accomodate us. I have worked in hotels and know from experience that there are better ways for hotel staff to handle such a situation. On the other hand, the rooms are nicely decorated and the bell hops are quite friendly. Also, the hotel is close to the beach (but far from Lincoln Road). So it wasn't a totally bad experience.
This place was fabulous!
From check-in to check out, everything at this funky, well-equipped hotel was great. The concierge was friendly and had great advice, they opened the door as we came and went, the bartenders were personable and made the best mojitos I've ever had. The waiter at Wish was well-informed, polite, and the food was fabulous. We were so comfortable in our room (#300, corner, quiet,) with the furniture style and placement, the large bathroom and huge shower. There was so much drawer and closet space, shelves and mirrors in the bathroom, all in a small room, it never felt confining. The front desk staff gave us a late check-out (3pm, even though it's supposed to be no later than 1.) They asked us how our day was as we came and went, always smiled and greeted us. A truly great experience!
Very Hip hotel located in the heart of SOBE. Cool roof pool and restaurant/bar. Very NYC (attitude and all) but if you're from NYC you may not want this if your goal was to get away from the city for a relaxing beachy weekend. Oh and this hotel is not on the beach -- its about a block and a half away. The rooms are nicely designed by Todd Oldham. Very bright but that's his thing. Its permutations of blues and green hues everywhere. The design was just great. Very MOMA. The room, a couture room, a step above the basic room, was still small. Big CON: the room was noisy. I could hear the guy next doors conversation with his girlfriend on the phone ( they were having some problems it appears). I heard other people's showers in the morning and was woken up by numerous noises during the night (and I'm a very heavy sleeper). The bathroom is tiny dwefinitely one person at a time sort of bathroom. There is a RAIN showerhead which is nice but NO BATHTUB (yikes). The sink in the bathroom is like that of an airplane bathroom, metal and petite, interesting design wise but gave me flashbacks of a tiny airplane bathroom. There was some mold (eww)on the grout/caulking seams in the shower which by the way has no door by design. I think on the website they said they had Khiels products for the bathroom complimentary stuff but not so when I was there. Also no room turn down service -- they mentioned it in their hotel folder -- maybe you have to request it specifically? (Well I guess it ain't the Ritz.)My breakfast was included in a package deal I had but the woman on the other end of the phone gave me attitude about asking for cappucino instead of coffee. She said she was going to charge me for it and justified that as the reason they forgot to give me my orange juice in the continental breakfast I ordered. Normally I would have argued but instead, since I was on vacaton, I said whatever, ( by the way, the cappucino was only one dollar more than the coffee which doesn't make up for my missing orange juice ...but hello??!! my breakfast was included in my package. Anyhow, enough was enough, noisy and an attitude? I didn't argue, I was on vacation afterall, instead I just checked out (two days early) and went elsewhere.p.s there is hip hop music playing everywhere in this hotel (ugh).
