Historical Traveller Reviews of Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne Hotel

Good Visit

from A TripAdvisor Member
I, my wife, and our 2 year old son stayed the last week in April 2004. We had a resort view room that included the breakfast buffet and parking.

Over the last 10+ years, we have cashed in frequent flyer miles and taken a vaction to either Hawaii or Mexico, staying in upacale hotels like Hyatt, Westin, Marriot, etc. We chose Miami this year due to the shorter travel times, and decided to splurge by chosing the Ritz-Carlton instead of the chains we had stayed in historically.

WHAT WAS GOOD: The service was great. For example, when we drove up, we were met by a swarm of valet parking attendents. Walking around the hotel, the staff was unfailingly attentive and courteous. Although our package included breakfast for only two people, we were not hassled about sharing some food with our son.

WHAT WAS NOT SO GOOD: There is no other parking option besides valet parking, and if it's not included as part of a package it costs $23/day. Umbrellas for the beach cost $10. Not many dining choices at the hotel, just Aria, the pool-side bar/restaurant, and room service.

Overall, our experience was just OK. Maybe our expectations were a little too high, but except for the phenomenal service, we were just not blown away by either the room, the hotel in general, or the food. For example, the buffet was good, but not great - nothing special about it. Same comment with the pools - there was nothing wrong with them, and in fact one pool had a shollow end that came right up to the lip of the pool like a beach so it was good for kids, but there was nothing really special about them either. My feeling is that other "lesser" hotels have done a better job of providing something special than this hotel did.

One odd thing: while we were there, there was sort of a weird combination of families with young children (infant - 6 years) and corporate people (the folks who are there as part of a company event who walk around with name tags). I got the impression the hotel wasn't sure which group was their target customer, and missed the target with both groups.

Best Family Vacation

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed from 4/16 - 4/23/04. We always take a vacation at this time of year and this years was the best ever. The hotel is one of the most family oriented Ritz properties that we have stayed at. The pool is fantatstic and we signed the kids up for the afternoon tennis clinics. Most of the instructors are Australian and are unbelievable with the children. The breakfast buffet is the best although a little pricey if not included in your package. We will definitely be going back.

Great Service, Pleasant Stay, Expensive Add-Ons

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Key Biscayne Ritz September 4-11, 2003. The service was GREAT! The hotel was almost empty and they upgraded us from a garden-view suite to a 1-bedroom apartment. The room was gorgeous. We have a 3 year-old and an infant. With a kitchen, we were able to do lunches in. We purchased the bed & breakfast package (which included the parking) - that was well worth it. Most dinners - we drove off the campus and ate nearby. I would recommend this since the dinners are so formal that it was inappropriate for very young children (& $$$$). The food was very good, but expect to pay a lot if not on a package. The pool was very pleasant and the beach was adequate. Sand very hot, waves non-existent, seaweed present. The hotel was very quiet and overall service was great. It was the kind of relaxing environment that we needed with 2 young boys. I would go again, but probably not stay as long.

Key Biscayne Bliss.....

from Arf42
My husband and I stayed here the weekend of March 26-28th. This Ritz is wonderful! Even though the hotel was sold out we never felt we were not being attended to. The service was definately 5 star! We go to many luxury hotels and my husband commented that this was the nicest and best service ever. The restaurant Aria has a great breakfast, but dinner was a little pricey but good. We would definately return to this location!

Unexpectedly nice!

I had made reservations at the Ritz before I read several of the reviews printed on this sight. Needless to say, I was somewhat concerned by the negative comments. My wife and I got a reasonable rate $359/night including breakfast - some special package. In any case, the staff was wonderful, the place was elegant and it was worth every penny. Instead of being "snobby", every member of the staff that we came in contact with bent over backwards to make sure that our stay was great. Aria, the restaurant at the Ritz, was also excellent. We also spent two days at the Sonesta, right down the beach. It was $280, not including a $12 amenities fee or breakfast. The price difference made the Ritz a better deal. Only complaint was that the beds were extremely hard - even with a feather bed on top.

Fun tennis friend!

Of course the Hotel was spectacular. Front desk staff was sharp and up to the second in response time with any of our needs. Rooms well kept, spacious and comfortable. We were especially impressed with a visiting tennis pro named Scott Paschal who took so much of his time to hit with us and our children. The children's clinics had been a disappointment, so we decided to hit with our kids ourselves. This is where we met this visiting pro and enjoyed ourselves so much. Overall, our visit was a wonderful experience and recommend the Hotel to anyone interested in visiting south Florida!

I second ... worst Ritz Ever!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I went to stay at this Ritz expecting what we have come to know as "the Ritz Experience", this is great room, better service and fantastic overall experience ... well the room was the pits!!! The bedding had holes and the room was not properly stocked (towels, pillows, mini bar 1/2 empty ...) when the staff was asked to address this we got poor service and unacceptable responses. Management was the same ... the only saving grace is the pool is nice and the spa is relaxing ... in short go visit the spa and stay elsewhere.

Or just don't go and enjoy the Delano ...

Very Disappointed

My husband and I booked a 4 night stay at the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne for our 20th wedding anniversary. Prior to our stay, my husband called the hotel to order champagne, strawberries, flowers, and to make massage appointments for both of us. Upon arrival, we were very impressed by the beautiful surroundings and the pleasant curbside greeting we received. Our luggage was promptly removed from the car and we proceeded inside to checkin. After a 20 minute wait, we procceded to our room. The room was a nice ocean-facing room, however, something appeared to be missing. We discovered that there was no side chair and ottoman. I called down for a chair to be brought up and maintenance arrived in 20 minutes with a mix-match chair. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the mix-match and he promptly removed it and promised to bring another with a matching ottoman. He returned in 15 minutes to deliver the matching chair and ottoman. The flowers were already in the room when we arrived and they were absolutely beautiful.
The champagne and strawberries arrived and the presentation was beautiful. Room service left the room without presenting us with a bill and we found this to be strange, however we didn't question it...we're at the Ritz (right?). Upon checkout we were presented with a $525 room charge for the champagne and strawberries...a bit expensive for 1 bottle of Christal and 1 plate of candy...To add insult to injury, the manager agreed to take $100 off our bill for the dusty room and the missing chair, however, would not budge on the $525 room charge. Moral of the story, ask what everything costs and sign for it. I would NOT stay at this Hotel again if they gave me a free room. The Ritz Carlton Buckhead (Atlanta) is a much nicer property and they know how to treat you like ROYALTY.

Great resort...but very busy

from A TripAdvisor Member
We went to the Ritz in March of 2003, and it was a great experience.
The phycility was upscale, well kept and beautiful. GREAT BEACH!
ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING BEACH! The water was beautiful, although a couple of days there was a fair amount of sea weed. The only problem with it is that The Ritz owns a very small section and it is very busy. The beach is topless. Many Mexicans or Europeans. Some just walk around the resort with no tops on. I was surprised at first but got used to it.
Great food, but smaller selection. The brunch costs over $100 per person, but it is a Ritz. A coke is $4.00.There are two pools, one a adult pool and a larger family pool. I practiced my snorkeling in the adult pool because it was more quiet and less active. VERY BUSY.
EXTREMELY BUSY. (it was March.) For Florida, I thought this was a great resort. At night, there is usually entertainment you can hear from your room, and there is tiki torches lit all around. It is really cool at night. Most of the rooms have a "partial ocean view." You can see a little bit of it, but mostly just condos. The Rooms are nice, and some are actually apparment styled. The beds are THE BEST! The staff is incredible. Absolutley incredible. Beyond what I had ever expected. All around great resort. Be sure to go out on the ocean on a kayak or someting. The water is very clear and beautiful. If you are willing to pay for it, Go to the Ritz Key Biscayne, and look out for the cruise ships that pass by. Very diverse in guests. Cool place to go on a trip.
It's worth the cost!

Worst Ritz Ever!

from egvacation
We were supposed to stay 2 nights, but the service was so poor, we left sooner. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that the lobby and grounds are beautiful. Check in time was 3:00, but the room wasn't ready. The front desk gentleman told us to leave our cell phone number and he would call us when the room was ready. We went to the pool, but there were no towels or pool attendants--very uncharacteristic of a Ritz Carlton! At 4:30, my husband went back to the front desk and found that the room was ready. What happened to the phone call that was promised? We booked an oceanview room, but when we got to our second floor room, all we saw was the roof of the hotel. It had cigarette butts and trash on it, and it needed to be pressure cleaned. After stepping onto the balcony, I did see the ocean in the distance. I called the front desk to ask for a different room, but was told the hotel was booked. We had been put on the floor with the banquet rooms. We could not get our children to sleep until 11:00 because the music was loud and the walls were vibrating from the noise.
At 1:00 am, we were awakened by a piercing siren and flashing lights!
An announcement was made to evacuate the hotel. We grabbed the kids and carried them outside in the rain. After standing outside for 20 minutes, my husband went to inquire about the "fire." It turned out that a drunk person attending the wedding at the hotel pulled the alarm. The alarm only went off on the second floor, and only those rooms were evacuated. We tried to go back to sleep, but could not. At 5:00 am, I went to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager. I was told his name was Robert, but he did not have any business cards. I expressed my disappointment in our experience, and was told the charge for valet parking would be removed from my bill. When I explained that our stay was ruined and I wanted better compensation for our troubles, he refused. I told him we were leaving, but he didn't care. We packed up and went home at 5:30 am. I am still trying to rectify our bill, as no charges were removed. As for Robert, he no longer works at the hotel. We have stayed at many other Ritz Carltons in Florida and have never had a bad experience. Our favorite is the Golf Resort in Naples!

Top Local Tips for Miami

Make sure you have a car if you want to get out beyond the Hotel. Key Biscayne transport is non existant apart from hiring bicycles - the 4 seater bikes are good for a laugh but not to get around the whole of Key Biscayne!!

you need a car unless you get the mercedes package On an island about 10 min from downtown

Great restaurant We ate at a place called Sushi Siam which was across from our hotel in a shopping strip. If you like Thai/Japanese food, it was amazing.
