Great Location. Nicely run

I stayed at the Ocean Five in April 05. We went just for the beach, food, and shopping. This hotel had an awesome location. It is 1 block away from the beginning of Ocean Drive where all the restaurants and clubs are and 1 block away from the Huge beach. It is within a comfortable walking distance from everything but, just far enough to get away from the crowds while you sleep and rest at the end of your night.
The rooms itself were very very clean. Small yes, but all the hotels around there are small. If you are searching around for a hotel, know that the outside of all these hotels look old, worn, and kind of sketchy but, inside, they are all quite nice.
The customer service was wonderul. Someone was always up front asking if you need anything and always giving great advise on where to dine or visit.
Beach towels are available at the front desk as well. There is wireless internet connection in the main lobby however, they also have a computer set up in the lobby for anyone to use... check your email and what not.
This place is very south but, not too south.... but yet, far away from the northern not-so-good area. It's perfect for a bunch of girls traveling alone.
I've only got one bad comment. Just when I thought everything went down smoothly, I had checked my credit card account after check out a few days afterwards. The hotel had charged my credit card for orange juice THEY SAY I had taken from the mini bar. My guest and I didn't even look at the mini bar! Anyhow, the girl argued with me for about 15 minutes insisting her staff "checks the mini bars daily and something was missing." I was more than annoyed with her demeaning way of basically calling me a liar. I got the charge taken off in the end. That was the only bad comment I have with regards to this place.

Good Location

This hotel has a pretty good location and is very central to everything in the area the rooms were ok nothing like staying at a hilton... The only reason why I would stay there again was the location other than that the room was pretty small .. decorating was a little weird... The construction next door was defiently lame ... Service counter was nice .. we didn't find out about the electro wave until a couple days later.. pay a .25 takes you up and down washington... Recommend if u want to be close to everything and can get for a responsible price.. its defiently not luxury or a plush type of a place

Nice place, outstanding staff

We stayed there for a week (early March 2005) and really came to like the place. Early impressions were a bit negative - small lobby, small room, even smaller bathroom. However, as we stayed there we came to appreciate that it is very well run. The staff are just outstanding compared to the other hotels we have stayed at in the area in the past (Park Central, Cavalier, Beach Plaza, Surfcomber). The ambiance and rooms are not quite as nice as the Park Central. Not all rooms have internet access, the wireless is available only in the lobby, and the rooms in the North building have to reached via the Deli and are next to a noisy construction site that is supposed to finish in early 2006. We stayed in the South wing, and did not encounter any noise problem. The free breakfast is mainly a bagel and orange juice, but still useful if you want something light. They have towels you can borrow for the beach (about a block away), and a free Internet terminal in the lobby (which runs just a captive web browser). The location just south of fifth street is vastly better and upscale than just a few years ago, and it is walking distance of everything on Ocean Drive, minus the noise. I did not get the names of all the staff, but they were all extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Would definitely not mind staying there again on a future visit. Our room did have an iron and ironing board, a safe, a hair drier, a TV, and a minifridge.

Great deal on Hotwire for clean room

Spent one night at the Ocean Five Hotel 2/25/05-booked on Hotwire for $104/night and was afraid the room would be kind of gross, behind the deli and next to the construction. I was surprised to check into a nice sized room with two full beds and a really beautiful bathroom...the room was clean and neither on the "deli" side of the building nor next to the construction. It is located across the street from the beach, but the location is good-close enough to all the bars and nightlife but not so close your kept up all night by the noise. This is a nice little hotel and the front desk and housekeeping staff were EXCEPTIONALLY nice. The price was certainly right and I would stay again.

Enjoyed My Stay

Ocean Five is a quaint, relaxing hotel. The location is perfect - steps away from the Ocean Drive parties, which is close enough to the happenings but far enough to get rest. The room is too small for a group of three, although the beds were a good size (2 queens); perfect for two. The room was clean and the employees were very friendly and helpful. The sidewalk deli in the hotel offered a decent and filling continental breakfast and the room rate was the best that I found for this class. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would stay again.

avoid the building site next door!

booked a last minute thru hotwire and although I don't think it QUITE makes the 3 star rating, by comparison with some other miami beach hotels we have used (shelbrookes, holiday inn) it was a gem. The room was spotless, the complimentary breakfast was fine, the staff were friendly and very helpful. The only problem is that on one side there is a massive building site, literally outside the window. Sunday morning no one was working so it was ok. Monday morning 7.00am onwards you couldn't open the shutters as there were builders about 5feet away. It has so many good things going for it, position etc. it seems a shame to knock it, but this side of the building would definitely be a nightmare on a weekday.

Is This the Same Hotel Everyone Else Reviewed

We stayed there and did not like the hotel at all. This is clearly not a three star hotel. Maybe two stars. The main way to access our room was through a deli next door that, at night, smelled like rotten meat!!! I'm not kidding, we walked through the middle of a deli at night to get to our room. When we got there the handle on the faucet came off in my hand. they fixed it, but not a good start. The neighborhood is sketchy, there were thugs hanging out outside one time hooting at my significant other. Also, we were supposed to have a non-smoking room and we got a smoking room by mistake and they did not have another room to give us. Finally, the clientele was sketchy at best. Avoid at all costs.

Great Location...Good Hotel

We just stayed here for the butt kicking we gave the Sooners at the Orange Bowl.

The Good:
Front Desk & Cleaning Staff are awesome, incredibly kind and sociable. Hotel was clean. Space..you get what you pay for. Shower is nice. Location..Location..Location: 1 block from the beach and we were were able to walk down Ocean Drive to The Clevelander and grab a slice of 5AM pizza pretty much every night.

The Bad:
The hotel is far enough (not too far) to be away from the night noise..but currently there is construction going on next store which starts at 9am...and there is a lot of door slamming which starts at around the same time..These are not constants..so you can sleep through it..but expect to be waken up a few times afters 9am. Also no ESPN man!...missed the Orange Bowl highlights!

Ocean Five did not disappointment

My husband and I stayed at the Ocean Five from Nov. 26-29 of 2004. We booked at this hotel after seeing the pictures of the room on their website and reading all of the various reviews. We found the hotel to meet our expectations. The rooms were clean as can be - we did not see one bug our entire stay. The bathroom was spacious with a marble shower that's big enough for 2! We were only a block from the beach and about a block from the nightlife. There were several deli's close to this hotel that we ate at for breakfast and lunch. If you like seafood, I highly recommend Grillfish for dinner. It's in walkable distance. As always, we hung out at the Clevelander for drinks in the evening. We tried the Crobar also, but found it to be very pricey. Hint: Grillfish gives you free passes to get in, otherwise it's $25 per person just to walk through the door. Drinks are $9 a piece - so bring plenty of cash. This is our second trip to South Beach and I can assure you that when we make our third trip - we will be staying at the Ocean Five Hotel once again!

Top Local Tips for Miami

Avoid Spring Break! Unless you are under twenty and one of the beautiful people, avoid Spring Break time - I felt totally out of place on South Beach. Go instead to Key Biscayne, to Bill Baggs Park.

Eating Out Dont be afraid to deviate form the menus, most restaurants will try and accomodate you only have to ask

Nightlife Fun South Beach has a really great nightlife, they have Niki Beach which is most popular on Sunday nights which is a dance club/bar/beach lounge. Right around there the have a few clubs owned by the Opium Group including Opium which is a outdoor/indoor nightclub. Towards 7th street they have a bunch of bars and dance clubs including Mangoes which is Cuban style with dancers performing on the bar and serving exotic drinks, they also have a hip hop section on the second floor. Once you get out their are one or two places they provide pizza 24 hours. One great, but pricey restaurant we visited was Grazie which is a local Italian Restaurant, you can expect to spend around 30-40 dollars per person without drink costs, but they have waiters who are constantly attending to your needs and provided some really amazing food. It is well worth the visit.
