Fairmont Nice, but Uninspiring

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Fairmont Turnberry is certainly a luxury resort, but multiple small inconsistancies prevent me from giving it an excellent rating. That said, this is a very nice resort and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

The rooms are large and well laid out, but in the Hibiscus Wing (where we stayed), they're in need of refreshing. The gold bathroom fixtures were slightly tarnished and two wall corners were dinged. The bed, however, was very firm and comfortable, and the room included a sofa and table, a private dressing area and large walk in closet. The glass and marble shower had great water pressure, but the grout needed to be redone. Our room had a lovely balcony overlooking one of two golf courses and looking out to the beachfront highrises. If you want privacy with a view, ask for a golf course view room. If you like overlooking the action, ask for a pool view room in the Hibiscus Wing.

The shuttle that runs between the Fairmont Turnberry hotel, Fairmont Ocean Club, Fairmont Marina, and the Aventura Mall doesn't run on a schedule, which is a major annoyance. We waited for 25 minutes at the Ocean Club to get the shuttle back to the hotel- none of the staff seemed suprised or offered an apology. The pool area at the hotel is very nice, but gets crowded easily. The pool staff were the best part of our entire stay - they were attentive and seemed genuinely interested in making sure we were comfortable and having a good time.

The food was very good (room service, Veranda for breakfast and dinner, Grill for lunch, multiple meals in the Conference Center), but even more expensive than expected. There were plenty of food options onsite- casual, high end, etc, and the Aventura Mall was an easy walk or shuttle ride.

The $10 per night resort fee confused a lot of people that we saw. Many of the guests obviously don't stay in resorts of this caliber - we saw several people moving their own luggage, wandering around looking for an ice machine (room service provides ice), and complaining about the food prices. The hotel staff should do a better job of explaining the services available and that tipping isn't required (it's covered in the resort fee).

The Ocean Club is low rent; it doesn't live up to the rest of the hotel. The beach itself was covered in seaweed and the bar, restaurant and pool areas were just basic concrete with plastic chairs and umbrellas. The Spa and gym were top notch and didn't seem to be used much at all. Definite hidden gem.

All in all, this was a nice place to stay for seven days. No real problems, but nothing inspiring either. If you're looking to stay in Aventura, this is certainly the nicest place, but that doesn't mean it's up to regular Fairmont standards.

Overall, a nice stay

from luxurytraveler
Stayed at the Turnberry Resort while attending a professional meeting that was being held at the Sheraton in Bal Harbor. Opted not to stay at the Sheraton because of the horrible reviews it has received recently on this website. Overall, I had a good experience at the Fairmont. My room in the Jasmine Wing (the most recently renovated wing) was well appointed, and had a huge bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and separate shower stall. The bed was comfortable and the surroundings peaceful. The hotel has some beautiful landscaping which you can admire as you walk through the outdoor pathways. The buffet breakfast is delicious, as is the service in the restaurant. The fitness center was well equipped, and the massages I had ranged from OK to excellent. Now for the cons: The pool area is a bit tight with lounge chairs arranged extremely close together. For some reason, there is no pool menu to order food from, only drinks. The pool staff were attentive to some patrons, but not to others. The biggest problem was the front desk staff who seemed completely disorganized and confused.

So-so for a Fairmont

from Royiv
Stayed here for a conference for work and didn't find that the property overall lived up to the standards of other Fairmont properties. This isn't to say that it's a bad property, it's just not what I expected from a Fairmont. The common areas are beginning to look a bit tired and in need of an upgrade. The room, while very large, was also in need of an update. As mentioned before, the bathrooms are huge, but I found them to be lacking in light. On the plus side, I found the food to be very good. I had room service, breakfast in the restaurant, and several meals catered in my meetings and they were all very good compared to other hotels I've stayed at. I also found the service to be very polite and friendly. Overall, I'd say this is a nice property, but it could be a great property if Fairmont updated it a little bit.

Would go back!

We stayed at the Fairmont Turnberry for a 3 night get away. We booked under a $400+ night package that included spa, dinner and daily breakfasts. I would recommend doing a package here as it is very pricey to do a la carte.
My husband and I both had spa treatments - a wonderful spa and the staff was great. Breakfast at the buffet was also fantastic. We used the shuttle to go to both the mall and the beach - easy to use and not far, although I agree with another reviewer that the "beach club" is really pathetic and cheap looking.
I liked how everything was paperless - gratuities were always included, - if you tried to tip they would say as much and let you know anything you gave was "extra" - classy. Also it avoided the uncomfortableness we've had in the past when ordering from room service - they tack on a huge gratuity and then the server stands there waiting for you to sign and tack on another buck or two. No chance of that here. Room was huge and gorgerous - bathroom was HUGE. Very, very clean. We would stay again, but only in off season when it's not crowded with snowbirds.

Great place and given it was off peak season, the hotel offered a great golf package, including free buffet breakfast and use of facilities (gym and beach). The resort is basically a hotel on 2 golf courses. The website suggests (to me anyway) that there is more to it, but there isn't. Ocean club and the mall are within minutes away by the hotel shuttle, which runs all the time throughout the day and early evening. Very convenient. Ocean club is definitely simple. I think it would be better if they offered more umbrellas (most were taken up early in the day), as well as stuff you can use in the ocean, such as floats, masks. They do not have a wide beach front which is what maybe what exaplins this though. Service was great, yadda, yadda. Stayed at the Jasmine wing, so I guess I got the good part.

Although some aspects of the property are in need of upgrading, overall the facility is terriffic. If you are a golfer, this is a great place to be. An excellent practice facility and 36 holes of typical Florida golf are all you could ask for.

The spa is top notch and I've never been to another hotel where the staff was as warm and attentive to the guests' needs. Great dining.

Highly recommended.

Nothing special...Needs Upgrades

from tokyomike
I'm a FPC member, and spent 5 days in the beginning of Feb.2005 at the Turnberry. I used a FPC upgrade certificate and stayed in a suite. The room had a nice view of the golf course, and skyline. The overall room was nice, but the high speed internet did'nt work. Housekeeping & Room service was good.

The pool area is very small, on a nice day you must get out early to get a chaise, and the seats are very close together. NO POOL BAR, even though they set up a "rolling type" bar off to the side, and pool service was just ok. I feel the pool needs a sitdown kind of bar. And the pool area needs to be upgraded. The food was good at both restaurants. For a very nice dining experience go off property to Chef Allen's "EXCELLENT". The spa was very nice, had some nice massages. And the gym is in good shape.

I feel this hotel is geared more to the convention crowd it has many parlors for conferences, and it's close to the Aventura mall, across the road.

The "beach club" was straight out of the movie 'Dirty Dancing". You have to take a short jitney ride to the beach club about 5-7 minutes. The building, and the amenities there are in desperate need of an upgrade. Everything is reminicent of an old Catskills weekend getaway. Fairmont better get on it.

Overall the property is just average compared to other Fairmont properties.

fantastic experience

from lawyerlee
We had an absolutely fantastic experience when we stayed at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle in August 2004. The service was top notch, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The pool and spa were both amazing. We spent our honeymoon here and, obviously, wanted our trip to be the most relaxing and memorable experience we have had as a couple thus far. Our stay exceeded our expectations.

location if you are a Golfer.

from Spencertraveller
Nice & beautiful. AS a PLATINUM Member in the FPC and Canadian as well (Yes, the Fairmont Chain is Canadian!) my expectations are VERY high and like a previous reviewer, whenever one complains, Fairmont jumps to rectify the problems.
Despite the maid leaving my room door open which was a real security risk & breach to my personal belongings and the mosquitoes that never went away until my last night (I spent 3 nights there), I find this hotel is a real golf resort. I stayed in the Orchid Wing in a huge one bedroom suite with a full Jacuzzi and separate quarters - very nice indeed. This was truly a busy time for the hotel as Valet parking was quite chaotic, slow despite so many people working to park cars. The entrance to the hotel was a nightmare.
Be prepared to have eveyrthing AUTOMATICALLY added a 18-20% Gratuity to your bill along with a separate charge on your night rate. I would rather the option to TIP people as I firmly believe that places where tips are included, tends to have mediocre service. The Spa was average, nothing like the Aveda Spa I visited in Jamaica. Nice surroundings indeed but no explanations of the different oils, massage did not leave me feeling WOW and was somewhat bland quite frankly.
Restaurants are nice and food is good but waiters needs to not walk off in a hurry when you are speaking or asking questions (Happened twice and I wondered if it is norm) although you are already asessed a 20% service charge. And asking if you wanted Evian or San Peligrino without telling you that it will be u$7.50 is in poor taste and have you ever seen a menu where Sea Bass is more expensive than Fillet Mignon? Never!
For golfers & shoppers, great location & hotel. If you just need a hotel in the area, I really think you can do better for a better rate or for the amount that you pay here. Would I return there ? Hard to say but I am so looking forward to the Firmont SAVOY in London to see & experience the Fairmont touch!!

s like returning to your own stately home

from Silverwood
We have stayed at Turnberry a number of times...independent property, Mandarin Oriental and now Fairmont. It is always a pleasure largely due to the attention to detail of the staff.
Our junior suite was in the Magnolia wing overlooking the signature 18th hole. The huge balcony offered entertainment as golfers tested their skills across to the island green along with views of the course.
The room was very spacious with pretty decor and a large comfortable bed. Large bathroom with jacuzzi tub and invigorating shower.
Restaurants at Turnberry are good especially breakfast at the Veranda restaurant but the close proximity to Aventura Mall and Bal Harbor offer a wealth to choose from too.
Will be returning shortly...no need to look for any where else.

Top Local Tips for Miami

airport Use Fort Lauderdale airpot. It's less crowded and nicer. It's also very close to Adventura.

Getting there fly into Fort Lauderdale, NOT Miami Int. to get here the fastest!

how to save on spa services If you join Fairmont's frequent Traveler program (Presidents Club), you can get 10% off your spa services and products. Since the spa services are pricey, this can add up.
