We had a 2 night reservation for the Miami Boat Show and were suddenly faced with a medical emergency with a family member which meant we could not make the trip. I called more than 24 hours ahead of time and explained the situation. Bottom line they are charging me over $300 for the room as a penalty for not cancelling 48 hours prior. Because the Miami Boat Show is in town, and there are no rooms, they will now rent the room AGAIN and get a bonus.

I stayed at the Dorchester with 4 other friends in two suites. The gave us a great deal on our suites ($265 each suite for the whole weekend). They put a hold on one person's card and allowed us split the bill so we could pay separately at checkout. With taxes and parking we all paid $113.70. However, when we got home 3 of us noticed that our credit cards/debit cards had a hold of $300 each put on them. When we each called about it we were told that the holds would come off after 48 hours. Now it has been 5 days and my hold still remains. I have called their accounting department and nothing has been done. They didn't even explain why the hold were there to begin with.

The air conditioner was broke for two days , we caught pure hell trying to sleep and the place looked like it had been there for 100 years and other words it was completely a dump, I nor my friends will never stay here again. The worst part is that we paid $179.00 per night

Where do I begin??? We made reservations because the rooms looked nice and clean online, but boy were we wrong! The room they gave us was not even like the pictures online, so we had to upgrade it with a charge of $75/night to a Suite. We wanted a non-smoking room, which we did not get. The "cable" TV were LOCAL channels! But we didn't say anything...But on the sencond night of our stay in the Suite, there were roaches coming from underneath the stove and the furnace room!!! The roaches were not the small ones either, they were the ones that would hiss at you if you tried to kill them! So that night we moved three different times. The other Suites had roahces coming from underneath the coach in the living room! Now in the third Suite, we finally got some sleep at about 1AM. None of the staffs helped us moved, on top of that they didn't even think it was a big deal that there were roaches in the there Suites when we called them about it! The staff there have the worst attitudes and services ever! On the other hand, the breakfast was not even good and was cheap but they charged us $30 bucks for the ONE plate! The housekeeping came and cleaned the room up, gave us new and cleaned towels but they didn't change the sheets! Who knows if they change sheets after per guests! I have never experiernced anything this bad in my life! I would not recommend this Hotel to anyone, especially travelers with young children, roaches in the rooms aren't safe for anyone and uncleaned sheets are not safe either! Be sure before booking!
Horrible Service! Rude and Unprofessional

I knew that this hotel was small, old and overpriced. What I didn't count on was the staff having no regard for anyone. I stayed there for 6 days, and I saw a total of 6 employees, .5 of which were moderately competent. When I asked anyone for help, they always referred me to one person, who was overworked and not too bright.
The rooms are tiny. The walls are very thin and you can hear everything, including the conversations of the people next door who are discussing what drugs they took and how much booze they consumed at 4 in the morning.
As I said, I stayed for 6 days. Every day, the hotel put a hold on my credit card for the amount of that night. On the fourth day, the hotel ran the full amount, above the holds that they had been putting on my account. The card bounced, because the hotel was effectively charging me double what I owed them. This happened in the middle of the day, but instead of calling me on my cell phone, the hotel staff let themselves into my room, and woke up my boyfriend, who was napping, and demanded that he pack up our stuff and leave. When I called my bank and figured out what happened (the hotel had to remove the hold they put on my account before they charged that same amount), I immediately told the staff. The one staff member who did anything at first refused to speak to me on the phone. After I relayed the message to her via my boyfriend, she offered a lame apology and said she would take care of it, and she let us keep our room. The hotel offered nothing for the inconvenience and insult, which was entirely their fault. Furthermore, they had already changed my hotel key (which they didn't fix), so I had to get them to fix that when I returned to my room.
When I went to check out, the hotel had only charged me for half of the stay. I have no idea why. They had me sign for the balance before I left, which I did. To further the inconvenience, the hotel did not run the transaction until TWO MONTHS after my stay. I paid in a credit card, not a check, and there is no reason for them to be so unprofessional. It scared me just to give them my information, they are the type of shady place where you could see erroneous transactions being taken out years later.

If you stay here, pay in advance, and in cash. That seems to be what they are used to. This hotel made me so uncomfortable, I did not want to trust them at all. This is NOT the way that you are supposed to feel on your vacation. This is why I vacation in the US and not overseas, because I expect a level of quality and professionalism. Unfortunately, the Dorchester lives up to neither, and their staff is so incompetent, they make their guests feel like they are a nuisance. I don't pay people to treat me like crap.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Dorchester Hotel and Suites

Great location and rooms, terrible service

from cagirl
My friends and I had our yearly reunion Oct 8-11, this year in Miami. We picked the Dorchester Suites because we got 1 Br, full living room, dining room, and kitchenette (toaster, microwave, fridge, burners, dishes, but no oven) for half the cost of a regular hotel room at the fancy hotels across the street. The rooms were in great condition and had plenty of room for 4 people. The A/C worked great. They were located in a quiet courtyard with fountains. The pool was good. The hotel has the ideal location - directly across the street from the expensive hotels (National, Delano), the beach, 2 blocks from Lincoln Street Promenade (restaurants and shops) and many clubs. The downside to this hotel is the service. The lines for the front desk took forever. We weren't given both rooms with 2 doubles as requested, but the hotel provided two free cots in the king bed room. The parking sold out because they didn't tell us to reserve it at check-in and then they tried to charge us for it on checkout. One day we had the do not disturb sign on in the morning and the cleaning people never returned to clean the room at all. Another day they cleaned it and took away all the towels! Calling the front desk to get extra utensils for cooking, etc was useless. Many other people were stuck at the front desk with all kinds of problems. This hotel is great if you are a group of young people looking for a great location, clean room, and reasonable rates. Don't expect anything in the service department.

Better than expected

from lelezinha
The pictures available in the Internet are not exactly what you find there. However, it is well located, fair price, "clean". They can enhance the quality of the bedclothes and pillows. Additional fees are parking (USD 10) and safe (USD 1). The only thing that I consider bad was the shower, which we have to waste long time because the water flow is very, very weak. I recommend, and I would stay there again.

s Honest Review

Disregard all the One Star reviews. This place is CLEAN, AFFORDABLE, & GOOD SERVICE. If you're not some sort of prissy this is a good value for the price. We rented to rooms, one was nicer and newer than another. But there we're no bugs, no broken anything, and it looks like the website photos. If you can't afford something posh, this is great.

Only problems: there is no bar by the pool and the elevator was slow. It's only 3 stories at most, take the stairs.

My best stay in South Beach

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is the best hotel I have lodged in South beach in Miami.
I am not talking about hi-end hotels, I am of those kind of travelers that cares about staying at good hotel while reserving my bucks to spend them in other activities.
Have been in half dozen hotels in this same area and this is the best room I have gotten.
King Size Bedroom, Kitchennete with microwave, stove and refrigerator, lounge with TV and Stereo Radio.. dining table....Huge!
I have to be honest, I got a free upgrade in the week prior labor day. But at least I can say that there are not bad surprises. Clean, Pool, Nice, good service, caring employees and great location.
Only thing you have to know is that parking is limited and is worth $12 per night, neares public parking is $20 for same $12 hours and coin parking is worth $1 per hour.

I just love it.

Liked the Dorchester

from Joey29615
Stayed @ the Dorchester on 19th & Collins over July 4th week-end. Good location, nice sized rooms...tho it did smell a little moldy/smoky, bring a candle...the pool was great to soak in after spending the day on the beach...the little fridge in the room was a great way to keep drinks cold...I think they have a free breakfeast buffet but I never got up early enough to try it :) I would stay there again.

Quite but still close to action

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here for a week and found the suites very nice, especially for its price. All the appliances were new and kitchen area exceptional.I would recommend this hotel to a friend. Did not get a chance to see the hotel rooms connected to it though. The pool is heated and wonderful to go in on a late night swim. If your looking to be in the middle of all the action I would not recommend this hotel. It is a good 3 blocks from the clubs. Nice distance to the shops though. But it took us a few times to call the staff to clean.

from A TripAdvisor Member
The service was terrible. No bellman, had to carry my bag up two flights of stairs. The bathroom lock was broken, so we were locked out of the bathroom for a bit. The phoneand the safe didn't work. Which they tried to charge us for in the end. The towels will rub the skin from your body and the noise is unbearable. The front desk not helpful. The key for our room needed to be reset at least six times. Everytime we got to our door the key wouldn't work and we would have to walk back to the front desk. The only positive thing is the Suite itself was okay.

Great welcome for an English woman travelling alone!

from angieaston
The trip was booked through Trailfinders. A single room was request for 2 weeks. Stayed 22 May 2004 to 6 June 2004

The hotel reception was clean and the reception staff were very welcoming. Note - £150 deposit is needed. A single room was not free when I checked in after 5pm so I was given a One Bedroom Suite Room 150.

The suite was excellent, large lounge with t.v and stereo system (CD did not work) dining room, standard size kitchen with double hob, fridge and toaster (didn't work) lots of storage space.

Clean good size bathroom!

The bedroom was great large king size bed, plenty of closet space. The only down side to this bedroom was that the window was next to the rubbish dumping area so it can be a little noise first thing in the morning other then that it was fine.

I had this room for five days. As it was Memorial weekend and quite busy I was told that I needed to move to the room that had been paid for within the hotel. The suites are at the back of the hotel by the Pool.

They helped move all my belongings (and there was a lot)

The first room that they attempted to put me in was awful the drapes were ripped and there was an awful smell in the room (205) and the bed looked very uncomfortable. The friendly porter noted my disgust and moved me to the next room 206, this was better but the drapes would not close this was needed as the room had three very large windows.

The room was on the second floor and the windows faced the Collins Avenue - the view was great!

The drapes were fixed imediately and I was happy!

The bathroom was very clean - recently fitted.

There was a small fridge, sink and food storage places.

Queen size bed with a small closet (with safe) and TV and radio (both worked).

The rooms were cleaned on a regular basis.

There is a small workout room (treadmill and two weights machines)

Decent size pool

Washing machine and dryer - Dryer did not work but housekeeping did all the drying for me.

Overall the hotel was good the staff very friendly (well most of them)

If you are going for a relaxing chill out holiday stay in the suites as it can be very noisy in the rooms at the front of the hotel - Especially Memorial Weekend when the music/noise does not stop from Thursday to Tuesday.

If you are looking for somewhere to get you head down after clubbing then this is the place for you!

I hope this helps xx

ok. where do i start? gross, gross, gross. i stayed at this dump on may6-9. i was in town for a wedding so i was trying to keep costs down. first off the roons were hideous!!! picture bright green blankets with green curtains to match. now add a musky smelly funk to the room, that doesn't go away even with the a/c on. i have no complaints with the bathroom. it was newly renovated and clean but small.
but back to the room. on our last night there we discovered these 2 little maggots on our bed!!!!! EWWW> then we found all these pairs of insect wings on the a/c unit. thank god we were leaviing the next morning.
check out was easy. no hassles.....
oh and one thing... if you do stay at this hotel, make sure you check your luggage when you get home. WE FOUND MORE OF THOSE MAGGOTS IN OUR BAGS!!!!!!
bottom line...this hotel is NASTY!!!

Great time at the Dorchester

from Caz-Windsor
We arrived here to be pleasantly surprised considering how cheap the room was! As 4 girls we found the room to be large enough for all of our cases, clothes, products and shopping etc and the bathroom facilities enough to make us happy! ie big shower, constant hot water, hairdryer,LARGE mirror!!
The situation of the hotel was perfect, close enough to explore south beath, the bus stop right outside and a perfect location for people watching!
The swimming pool was clean and big enough to have a swim...only complaint not enough sun beds so get up early and be prepared!
The staff were lovely and very accomodating especially the night staff!!!

Top Local Tips for Miami

Mango's (on Ocean Drive) Mango's has great drinks & the atmosphere is live, but the food is horrible!

parrot jungle island and I would highly recommend parrot jungle island to all tourists, it is ethically run (unlike some other attractions in Miami) and you could easily spend 3hrs there, lots of interaction and education. "THRILLER" was a great way to see Mami from the water, including Miami beach, all of the famous houses and to bet a bit of back history on Miami-just good fun :)
