I am very disappointed with my stay here. I would never stay here or recomend this place to anyone. We had three people in the room. We were told we could only have two breakfast coupons and two towels even though we had three people. The noises throughout the night were enough to keep everyone awake. When we went to complain, they made us think we were making it up. The least they could of done is offered us a free night. Finally, the restaurant charges for everything under the sun and you cant even get a free re-fill. I hope for the future that the things change or there will be no business for this hotel. P.S. The temp control does not work in the room, so we had to keep the door open to stay warm.

Sun sea,a good book, great staff .heaven!!!!

Prepare to be disappointed with this hotel. Staff unfriendly, rooms smell of dampness and in need of decoration. Lift did not work the whole time we were there.
The only positive thing to say is that the hotel is on the beach and is fairly cheap.

Hi again. Were back from a fabulous 10 days at Thunderbird. Great room facing beach. Room service lady excellent. Hotel looking a bit tired but we understand it's been sold and might not be there in a couple of years, it's supposedly been bought by Donald Trump. So with that in mind we have already booked for 12 days this time at end Nov into Dec. Yes, there are much POSHER hotels around. But we like this one. Like so many of the returning guests that we speak to. Same faces every year. Some people book for 4 weeks or more. ROLL ON NOVEMBER.
Excellent service and staff

I have stayed there on a regular basis and have just booked to go back again in March 2007
This hotel might not have all mod cons but is a great position on beach friendly beach staff and the hotel is good and clean and there is plenty of shopping and food places around.

Hotel was okish, when we walked through the front door the hotel smelt of damp. The rooms we were first allocated smelt the smae and had peeling paint on the wood frames and no paint at all on the steel framed windows. Shoddy is the only name for it. Every room has a balcony but when your balcony is on the north side and gets no sun and looks onto the next door hotel or the car park, what is the point.

The staff on reception had the customer service skills of a wet fish which was very unfortunate as the Virgin Holiday rep Milly was lovely and tried to be as helpful as she could.

We bought our holiday from a travel agant in the UK, it was a Virgin Holiday. We were hugely disappointed with this hotel. If the hotel staff had have been slightly better mannered I think we could have put up with the damp smell and the infestation of ants in our rooms but when mixed with rude staff it was very off putting. Christmas in a hotel is usually a plesent experience, however I wouldn't repeat any of it in the Thunderbird hotel!!!
On reading some of the other comments below it seems to have deterioted since last summer!! We have been told since though that the damp smell may be an after effect of hurrican damage, who knows ..... Virgin Rep was great though

The room was clean and the maid service was excellent. Yes the hotel is older but it was clean.
The person who helped me book tours was wonderful and very helpful whenever I ask about shopping or where to get cuban coffee.
The guys who parked the cars were great.
The front desk staff were nice and helpful if you ask a question or needed something done.
The restaurant service was good and the food was excellent.
I was very happy with the Best Western Thunderbird service and hope to go back next summer. It has character and atmosphere that you don't find at the big high rise hotels.

We stayed at the Thunderbird last year August 2005, on a two centre holiday, spending the first week in Orlando on Internation Drive, After our first hotel, The Thunderbird was a blessing, it was adequate, clean and central to everything, our two linked rooms were newly decorated and very clean with kitchen, you do need a car but after several holidays in Florida you wouldn't dream of not having one, I do think that the hiring of the sun beds was a bit much on a daily basis with the best beds with shades always reserved, but overall we found it ok as a family hotel with car but wouldnt want to stay there if we were were young and clubers as you do need to be nearer to South Beach for all the entertainment.
Reasonable hotel bit basic

Just returned. The hotel is ok. The staff were very friendly as we were polite to them they were really nice back the guy that runs the tours is really sweet! The reception staff were very helpful and the virgin reps fantastic.
The hotel is fine the food and drink good and pool and ammenities fantastic. The rooms how ever were a bit of a let down seeing as we were superior. Altough they were very clean!
A little tip if you want your room cleaned while you are out put the sign on the door "please clean my room" otherwise it is done very late afternoon.
It is also an hours drive to south beach although this did not affect us as there were excellent restaurants within walking distance. If you are looking for a cheap break this is fine anything more you may be disappointed.
At the end of the day it is what you make it!

s not the Ritz-Carlton, but your paying for Best Western

from MikeWoodside
We just returned from a wonderful 12-day stay at this hotel. Like I said, it's not the Ritz-Carlon but you get what you paid for. The location is excellent, right on the beach, on a safe, beautiful part of Miami. There are many restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance, a Navarro Pharmacy across the street.
Unlike many of the reviewers here, I found the front desk staff to be polite and helpful. The rooms were clean, the bathrooms a little outdated but very clean, the maids made the rooms early in the morning. I have to say that the air conditioning was a little on the "slow" side, but if you opened the terrace door, the room felt cool. The guys by the pool were a little "territorial" the first day, but by the third day we became buddies. I felt very comfortable at this hotel, and at $69/night, you can't ask for more. We plan on returning next year, like many of the returning guests that we met during our stay.

Gone downhill rapidly

from blondetotty
I had stayed at the Thunderbird on many happy occasions as a child and again in 2003 I had a very nice stay. This occasion however there were some problems. At check in I believe the older slim woman at the desk was probably the rudest check in clerk I have ever encountered. The twin efficiency ocean front room which I had booked on their own website was not available and we were allocated a king pool front room. This was then changed to a twin room facing the (very loud) bar. When querying we had no efficiency, she very grudgingly agreed to reduce the room rental cost (still way overpriced at $89). The room itself was ok, a bit tired and the bathroom was a bit shabby, but the location of the room was a nightmare, fortunately the virgin atlantic supplied earplugs came into good use. We were only there for 3 days but this was long enough. The only decent selling point was the bar staff (Carmen) and the beach barman (Frank) and the guys looking after the sunbeds. Sunbeds and in room safe were included in the 'resort fee' (what resort!), but as the last reviewer stated, I think this place is not long for this world and will probably be torn down pretty soon. In the 80's - memory serves fantastic family fun holidays but it is definately past its prime now and will probably be a high rise condo in the near future.

Waiting for Mr Trumps dozers

from A TripAdvisor Member
If only i had found this website before we travelled. There was so much wrong with the place there isn't room to list it all here.
Spent two days ill after new years eve in franks pool bar. Please dont have a slice of lemon in your drink if you go there and watch the roaches and collapsing ceilings in the hall ways.
I can only assume the bulldozers from the Trump development next door are not far off moving in. (thats if it doesn't fall down first).
Virgin rep thought it was wonderful and could'nt see what our problem was.
Bus into miami beach and harbour went thro some pretty scary districts as well. This is not a place for an English/European tourist.
Fortunately two stiff letters to Virgin on our return gave some redress.
Been put off the states for good now!

Would never go back!

I have been to many hotels and this is by far the worst. There is a man at the pool gaurding the chairs and towels making sure you only use two a day. When I tried to go to the beach with my towel I was confronted and told I couldn't take the towels out to the beach. Get Real! Every day was an adventure watching him offend people who inadvertently sat under a shaded area without paying extra. I hope anyone coming from another country doesn't judge the U.S. by this hotel. The continental breakfast was 2 pieces of toast and juice. They have no extra linens. Upon my check out at 5 am there was a woman needing a blanket so she could sleep on the floor of her room because her air conditioning was broken and it was too hot to sleep by her friend. The front desk said they didn't have any more. Unbelieveably bad. I went to my room and gave her mine. The staff is rude except the maids. My room had a working air conditioner but I heard many others didn't. Choose some place else!

Average Hotel

This hotel was booked through Virgin and as Frequent Virgins we were automatically upgraded to an efficiency suite. The room we were allocated was reasonably clean, but a little dated which gave a slightly scruffy feel to the place. The kitchen facilities were useful though, and we also had a free safe (with Virgin you do not have to pay a resort fee or parking charges).
The pool area was nice, although the pool itself was freezing cold (the ocean was warmer!) the hot tub had some empty cans and litter floating in it, very unnattractive.
The location of the hotel can't be bettered, it sits right on the beach and is close to the Aventura Mall (shuttle from hotel or 5 mins by car). The nearby Publix is useful and there is a Denny's some 100 yards up the road for a great breakfast.
We didn't eat at all at this hotel, we were only staying here for two nights prior to our Orlando hotel. But the onsite restaurants looked busy during our stay (always an encouraging sign!).
This hotel represents reasonable value for money at a great location, but there are better hotels to choose from if you are making Miami Beach your main base for 2 weeks. As a one or two night stay however it is okay, provided you remember that you always get what you pay for!

absolutely awful

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our stay, after a long flight from England was a very disappointing one ! The only fortunate thing was we were there for only one night before travelling to Orlando....but with two children ! The rooms were disgustingly dirty. dated and with the added bonus of a cockroach in our bath !! The mattresses on the beds were stained and i couldn't bring myself to sleep on it....slept on top of a blanket which was probably just as filthy ! The entire hotel was in a state of disrepair, the lifts creaked and shook if you were brave enough to use them !! Their was a disabled ramp for wheelchair use which was so steep, that there was no possible way it could be used in a safe manner. There were lots of broken windows around the hotel and doors hanging off their hinges !! Just to add, we were up and dressed very early 5am, and left before breakfast ( the restaurant was dated and dirty ) We couldn't wait to leave, glad to say the rest of our holiday was great, at Disneyworld. Just a note; we videoed the hotel and took pictures, which we used as evidence when we complained to Virgin on our return..........we were compensated, but not nearly enough !!

Great spot

Having used Trip Advisor to find a hotel in Miami, thanks to the reviews I found an ideally located, well priced Hotel. The hotel was conveniently located across the road from a pharmacy and supermarket and had a bus-stop directly outside going to South Beach and Ventura Mall. A bus trip to south beach cost $1.25 and took approx 35mins. We had a superior room consisting of two double beds, dining table and chairs, small kitchen with fridge and microwave, large bathroom, tv and plently of storage space. The room was spotlessly clean and we had daily maid service. The facilities in the hotel were excellent, 2 nice restaurants, 2 bars (one poolside) with regular entertainment, 2 swimming pools, one for children and a hot-tub. The staff were very friendly and spoke English, French and Spanish fluently. The concierge organised a trip to the Everglades for us and he got us discount. Definetly worth a trip.
All in all, I would recommend this hotel to couples or families looking for a nice hotel with all the facilities required to enjoy a nice relaxing holiday.

A Pleasureable Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
It was my third time staying in the Best Western Thunderbird as I go to Miami twice a year. The Best Western is not the Hilton or Marriott but the standards are petty ok. My room was clean and the daily maid service was ok. The air condition work perfect on all occasion and the staff on the receiption are polite and helpful. The beach was fantastic, and the pool was great would be better if it was heated. Overall there nothing that bad about the Best Western Thunderbird there are worst hotel down by the Southbeach side which would turn your stomach. As are there much worst hotel that cost alot more in London.

Keep up the good work Best Western Thunderbird.

great location and drinks...the end

from IntlBYT
We spent the first week of December 2004 here. On the plus side the location is fantastic, just across the bridge from the Aventura mall, the way the pool area pretty much just fades into beach area is great! It makes it so easy to get into the ocean and come right back to the pool, at other resorts I've stayed it's a huge commitment of packing up, hiking forever in sand and possibly crossing a road just to go into the ocean; no such ordeal necessary here, couldn't be easier. The other great thing is the bartenders, particularly at the tiki bar where we spent most of our time, the drinks are top notch and you can't beat the price anywhere in Miami (around $6 for an awesome pina colada or margarita); all 3 bartenders we had at the tiki bar were real professionals and couldn't have been nicer and they also come out casually onto the beach during the day when it was slower in the bar to see if you wanted anything (way above typical best western type service).

However unless this hotel corrects the bad I can't see myself going back for more than drinks. It was hot while were there and the room was a pressure cooker. The air conditioner is a central duct type system not the usual type you control yourself, the thermostat was a joke. We cranked it down to 50 and nothing happened, we moved it up to 80 just to see and nothing happened. We got on a chair and looked in our duct and it looked open but nothing was coming out. After our first sweatfilled night we called the hotel they said someone would be up to fix it, after calling and going down to the desk about 10 hours after we first called a nice enough guy comes up, pretends to "open our duct" and leaves saying it will be much better. We spent that night too turning our bed into a waterbed of sweat. In the end it never got fixed, other guests i talked to said it was the same deal in their rooms. My guess is they turn off the air in December to save money, despite the fact it was 86 degrees out, the hottest place in the United States while were there.

I think a lot of the reviews on tripadvisor are a little too picky, because I'm not very picky and spend a lot of time camping rather than in hotels anyway, however this place has potential and some quirkiness about it that's appealing but the room was just too freaking oppressively hot (last thing you want after a day at the beach) for me to think about recommending it.

Disappointed from UK

from Gidz59
Having booked this through Virgin and the fact that it was a Best Western we expected a reasonable level of accommodation and service. However, we were extremely disappointed. Virgin offer a free room upgrade for frequent bookers (subject to availabilty). We had already paid for upgrade to standard and requested a further upgrade on arrival. We were told the hotel was full and we had the only room available. This we were told was a standard room but quite obviously was not!! The shower did not work at all and the room was small and dark and overlooked the car park. On complaining to the receptionist she was extremely rude and told us she would 'consider' moving us the next day then proceeded to answer the phone and ignoring any other questions from us! Only on the help of the Virgin Rep were we actually moved to more suitable accommodation. The rooms are definately 'budget' and the walls are thin and you can hear everything next door!

There was also great confusion every day with new people arriving on the process for reserving sun beds which was not explained to customers on arrival. The 'gentlemen' in charge of the beds were extremely rude behind the backs of customers who they felt didn't understand the language - we actually heard them use the 'f' word at customers.

The breakfasts were very reasonably priced but again the staff didn't seem the slightest bit interested. We waited for a table for about five minutes then were told that although a booth was free it was for four people and as there were only two of us we would have to wait until something came free.

During the whole week we were there the water in the bathroom was problematic. One day we had no water at all. The rest of the time we intermittently had scalding hot water coming out of both hot and cold taps making it impossible to shower as the water was too hot and the pressure non existent anyway. We did bring the matter to the attention of the receptionist who promised to have things looked into but seemed more intent on fixing her stapler than listening to us. Two days later we complained again and were told that they had problems with the water. Two days after that when we left, the water was still not fixed.

This is not the standard of accommodation we expected either from Virgin or Best Western (which we have used many times in previous visits to the US). Unless you are over 65 and don't care much about where you stay - find somewhere else!!!!!!!
