Easy access and easy staying

I was here for the party weekend,and needed a place that is easy to get to and low price. This hotel is perfect for young people like me. No one bothers, no trouble. Hey, what you pay is what you get! I wasn't expecting a five star service when I chose Clay. Plus, it's great for hookups!

Great location, poor service

I give this hotel location a great rating for location, though customer service and hotel security could use improvement- I made a reservation and put down a deposit for a 'super shuttle' and was given a piece of paper to give to the shuttle driver for the deposit, though it wasn't accepted by the driver. Never saw my deposit again and after calling to notify the hotel, was told that they would 'talk to driver' and never heard back from the manager about my lost deposit- disappointing. Very poor hotel security - the iron gates and door to the block of suites that are supposed to be locked were left open the 4 nights I was there, so anyone from the street can have access right outside of the hotel rooms. DEFINATELY not a family type hotel - people were yelling in the hallway throughout the night 3 of the 4 nights I was there and the neighborhood gets sketchy so buyer beware.

Lives up to its ranking as great budget hotel

Miami Beach is a tough town in which to get a room cheap, and in which to get good customer service. The Clay offers both.

The hotel is old, and well-worn, but in a very European sort of way. (complete with Europeans) The location is unbeatable - restaurants and the festival atmosphere of Espanola Way literally at your doorstep. Everything else is 2 blocks away - Beach, parking garage, 24-hour CVS pharmacy, Lincoln Road (Miami's awesome pedestrian mall, pleasantly active until after midnight each night). Discounted parking at a nearby garage. Ocean Drive is only short walk.

If you're into dance clubs (I'm actually not) there are several close by, including the famous CroBar.

Rooms are tiny (even the "Deluxe"), but my floor had a very usable lounge with balcony overlooking the fiesta below, internet access kiosks, and a big meeting table where German students occasionally met for class.

Noise from the restaurants outside might be a problem, so you might want to pack earplugs, but the location and price make it worth the trouble.

Customer service at the Clay is far superior to my previous experiences in Miami Beach.

I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff are here. We had a night to kill after a cruise in Miami and wanted to see the livelyhood of Sobe. This hotel is in a GREAT location, and we received a balcony upgrade overlooking espanola way which is gorgeous and fun. Lots of history with this hotel and with history comes, lets face it, age. The room was not what I expected, VERY modest and older. It was clean however but basically a place to crash for european travelers or those who really arent concerned about style, frills etc. Then again I had just left a cruise ship. Other guests didnt seem to mind. Balcony view was incredible and I can't stress enough how great the staff were even before I got there. They went out of their way. I can say I did get a peek at another room that didnt have a balcony and it looked a little better than ours. Great place to stay if you're interested in a cheap, o frills hotel in a fabulous location and really nothing more.
FYI we ended up leaving to go closer to our airport for our flight in the am and they refunded our money with no problem. For that I would probably go back even though it wasnt exactly what I expected. If you arent going to be in the room a lot its great, really.

Good location, but spartan only begins to describe the Clay

Went to South Beach for the Orange Bowl. Stayed at The Clay Hotel based on referrals from Trip Advisor. Things you need to know if you want to stay there. The location is great if you want to party in South Beach. Lots of little restaurants a and shops all over and only a couple of blocks from the beach.
However, if you have a car you will park 2 blocks away if you are lucky enough to get one of the parking cards for $10 a day. The hotel does not have elevators and they do not have rooms on the ground floor. So if you are handicapped, you might want to contemplate somewhere else. You have to prepay for the phone with a minimum of $20 which you will get reimbursed on check out. They only have one size towel, bath. No face towels or wash towels or for that matter towel racks. Spartan only begins to describe the room. The air cond was above the clset door. That was fine as it worked. Only problem was my roomie found out the evaporation tube was dripping onto the floor and the bottom of his suitcase was sopping up the excess moisture.
If you want to stay in South Beach and you want an inexpensive hotel this place was ok, but expect to be nickel and dimed and don't expect a lot more than a crash pad. I will probably stay elsewhere next time.

Good value, great location

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Clay for five nights over New Year's 2004. Our first room had a balcony facing the plaza off Espanola Way. Although it was nice having a balcony, it was tough to catch some sleep during the night, since there's a restaurant right across the plaza, which is pretty noisy. We switched to another room in the main building, facing the backyard with no view at all, but that doesn't matter when you just sleep there. The rooms were pretty small, but clean, and the staff was very friendly. I would recommend Clay Hotel for those who doesn't spend too much time lounging around in the room, and being on a budget. The location is great, it's close to everything, epecially Lincoln Road. If you're looking for a breakfast spot, I highly recommend Front Porch Cafe on Ocean Drive and 14th str. Get there early, though, since there's usually a line to get a table.

The location of this hotel is great, but that is about all I can say I liked. My room was in a seperate building on the next block, the street is very lively, espacially on a friday night. The bar below my room pumped very loud house music until very late at night. The air-conditioning worked but the room was generally sorta scummy with stains on the wall and bedspread. The price (70$) for a Private Room with Twin bed was great, and like I said the location in central south beach is great, but I will probably look for someplace else next time I visit.

We stayed there 1/11/05 - 1/13/05. The location was right in the heart of South Beach which was great! The atmosphere and staff were enjoyable. THe room was alittle run down and very small. Parking was very difficult. But the price is right! Don't expect a lot as far as the room but I would probably stay there again!

I spent 7 nights at the CLAY Hotel in Miami's South Beach, which is probably located at the most interesting place in Miami Beach. Fortunately I got a calm room not facing the busy street (Espanola Way). Rooms are comfortable enough, and provide TV, refridgerator and aircondition (+fan). Prices are mostly small, which finally makes it really recommendable.

I used to live in Miami and I always go back to visit my friends at least once every 3 months. South Beach can be a very tricky place to find nice hotles at a reasonable price, as most all of the hotels are art deco and very old. Anyway, this was my first time trying The Clay Hotel and my friends and I have vowed to only stay here. It was fabulous! The price was great $70 per night for a deluxe room that comes with 2 twin beds and a private bath, and the bathroom has a tub! Nice. Plus there were always lots of clean white towels at our disposal and the water pressure in the shower was great! The room was very clean and was a decent size. There is a safe in the room that is FREE to use, rare that is. A TV is also in the room, a good sized closet, but be sure to bring your own hangers and there was also lots of drawer space. The room also comes complete with 2 extra blankets and 2 extra pillowes, fabulous. The staff is super friendly. There are several resturants with decent prices right downstairs. The hotel is located on Espanola Way which has some really GREAT shopping, especially if you are looking for some great quality hand made jewlery and clothes. South Beach is within super close walking distance as is Lincoln Road and all the shopping on Collins Ave. as well as all the clubs on Washington Ave. The WORLD FAMOUS CROBAR IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET! Do note however that there are no amenities for persons with disabilities. That means no ramps and no elevators, ONLY stairs. Also bring your own hair dryer if you need one as they only have a few to go around at the front desk. Also, they have some great garage parking for $10 that allows you to go in and out as many times as you like, and that is wonderful!

I recommend the Clay Hotel to anyone who is looking for cheap and clean accomodation in Miami Beach. the Clay hotel is divided into 2 parts : the youth hostel and the hotel. Last august, I stayed two weeks at the hotel: the staff was very friendly, the rooms and bathrooms were clean ( they hoover and change the sheets every day...),with air conditioning and TV. Besides, it's very well situated : 2 blocks from a white sandy beach, you have a supermarket right in front of the hotel and many bus stops too. finally, you can book trips to key west, orlando or even the bahamas at a good price from the hotel!!! So..... enjoy the clay hotel and have fun in Miami Beach!!

We stayed there for 5 nights (4 plus 1). The first room we stayed in was small but clean and agreeable. the second one was bigger and had been refreshed not long ago. Summing up, it was a great deal. Adding to this, at the reception they gave us all the informations so we were able to move around miami. Recommend!

Top Local Tips for Miami

Duck Tour If you go on the Duck Tour keep receipt of your ticket as there are a number of restuarants (the tour guide will advise you) that will give you a discount (I think it was 20%) on your meal. It's always good to have some extra money in your pocket!!

Plan ahead! We initially decided to just take the bus/train everywhere, but the buses were packed, they did not go to all of the attractions we wanted to go to see in less than 2 hours to get there (Little Havana from Miami Beach) so we relented and got a rental car. We arranged parking through our hotel which was affordable ($10 per day) and then went to the beach early - before 9:30 a.m. to get parking on Collins Ave. The best way to see So. Fl. is by car.

Parking There is a good, cheap ($8/day) parking garage at Collins and 13th.
