Historical Traveller Reviews of Albion Hotel

A slightly below average hotel...

from uphilli
Just got back from a short, 2 night stay at the Albion. Good price for the area ($129/night, compared to the Ritz 1 block away for $400/night!!). First impressions on the outside: looks great, nice design, clean, perfect spot in Miami Beach. Lobby: chic, clean, (no smells), staff was pleasant. Check in with no problems. Elevator: what? its an elevator from the 50's? Floor: carpet seems a bit grungy...slight mildew smell. Room: I was how small the room was! Basically a full size bed, a TV cart/mini fridge and a side table w/ cd radio and lamp. Room overlooked the roof and the A/C units. Bathroom was cramped...shower pressure low. The decor was simplistic yet stylish. The bed was the worse, big dip in the middle (yes, I was out of the bed). I think the bed, the size of the room, and the lack of a table/chair made me rate this as a 2. My back is still a bit sore! Since we could stay only 2 nights of our 4 night trip to SoBe, on to the Haddon House down the street-->

Telling it like it is....about the Albion Hotel

from dangui
Just back from our first visit to the Albion in South Beach. I can see what the problem is relative to some of the prior reviews. These reviews are from people who expect the Ritz Carlton at a Quality Inn price.
My partner and I booked 6 nights at the Albion via The price was $127/nt. in late February! That's an incredible bargain for a nice hotel that's 5 minutes from the beach.
After reading some of these other reviews we were prepared not to like this hotel - we had even called Hotels to find out what we would need to do if we had to bale at the last minute.
What a pleasant surprise. The room was very clean with two queen beds and a reasonable bath. The combination of indirect lighting from behind the headboards and the tiny halogen spots in the ceiling was great. The TV had great cable service and there was even a CD/Radio in the room.
After 6 nights I can tell you that the maid service was excellent.
But what a location...just a block to the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall...eight blocks of sidewalk cafes and galleries. And don't get all worried about the comments on the expensive, $22/day valet parking! We found a great, muncipal lot less than 1 block away with a $1 per hour rate and $8 daily maximum.
Now, regarding those comments about the lobby smelling musty or moldy. Not true. As you might know there is a huge, 15 ft-high waterfall cascading down one entire wall of the lobby. The only "odor" is a bit of chlorine they add to keep the water fresh.
Everyone was helpful, the pool is in top condition, and the free coffee every morning was a nice touch. We had lots of hot water and the room had a very effective HVAC system with its own thermostat near the door.
Here's the negative. Yes, the one of the elevators has a few scratches on the inner door - but you have to look hard to see them. So what? Our only complaint was that we had a room with a connecting door - those can easily be a problem even in the best hotels. On a couple of nights we could hear the folks next door (rather their TV) via that door. Never stay in 1/2 of a connecting room.
Yes, there were small things that suggest it's time for some redecorating...but they were very minor. For example, there was a small abraision on the finish of the stainless-steel bathroom sink. But you know, it's too bad some people expect perfection at a value ain't going to happen. People who are comfortable staying in older European hotels would think the Albion is 4-star.
Yes, the restaurant that was adjacent to the hotel's main entrance has closed. Some type of retail store is going in there. But who cares? There are dozens of great restaurants just steps away. Be sure to try Balans for dinner, and the Van Dyck for breakfast...both on Lincoln Rd. pedestrian mall.
Bottom line, a fun hotel - not perfect - but truly above average AT THE PRICE.
One other hint: be sure to take the Duck Tour that picks up passengers right outside the hotel. We had a ball in the 40-person amphibious carrier that drives down South Beach streets then goes down into the water for a cruise in Biscayne Bay. One of the highlights of our trip!

Good choice for the budget traveler

We booked the Hotel Albion for the simple reason that it was cheapest 3-star hotel we could find ($145 per night) and the location appeared ideal. After spending the night I can attest that the location is excellent. You are only steps away from the Lincoln Rd. shopping/restaurant district, as well as the beach and the Delano Hotel (which has the best hotel lounge/bar I have EVER been in).

The hotel itself has seen better days. It is in desperate need of a rehab. It's a shame because the hotel is really capable of reaching such heights. The art deco exterior and lobby is beautiful. If you like a simple room (many people do not) this place is truly mimimalist. The carpets in the hallways and rooms ARE stained in many places. The beds themselves are very comfortable. Also, the staff was very helpful and friendly. Ask the front desk about parties in the area. They had free passes to some of the more trendy clubs/lounges.

We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a suite on the penthouse level. We had our own private deck capable of holding 20 people comfortably, with a view overlooking the pool, and a second bathroom and shower outside. The room was great, but probably not typical for the hotel. Although I'm sure this upgrade is not common, it does happen.

All in all, we would return to the Hotel Albion if we were on a budget (or guaranteed an upgrade). For more luxurious accomodations, I would be more likely to book some of the other hotels in the area.

Not worth it!!

Please don't stay here. It's basically a holiday inn type hotel that's trying real hard to be trendy. The place smells like mildew, and our room smelt like cigarettes. I'm pretty low key, but this was ridiculous. Please, if you can afford something better, spend the extra money, and go somewhere else. Those beds just aren't worth it.

So so

Nice hotel, good spot on South Beach, personal not very friendly, watch your car when using valet parking (our car was seriously scratched).

Great Choice

Just returned from 4 days/3 nights in Miami Beach staying at the Albion Hotel. For having no idea where to stay we could not have chosen better. The rate was excellent, the pool really was heated 24 hours. The location was ideal because everything was out the front door - the CVS, Walgreens, Burger King, McDonald's, night life, but not noisy. It was 2 blocks from the beach and if we had stayed on the beach we would not have enjoyed it, it was too cold and always windy. We had 2 queen size beds, TV, CD, alarm - all the usual stuff. Lots of hot water and water pressure. A bell-hop was available even as we left at 4:30 in the morning back to the airport to get us a taxi. I would stay there again.

Love it! Booking for a 3rd Time!

The hotel is clean! There's no mold or mildew smell so common at the Beach hotels. Staff is friendly and helpful! Pool and Fitness Center are wonderful amenities. I've stayed here twice (most recently October, 2004) and am about to book my third stay for another long weekend in November.

Mediocre at best

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for 4 nights in early April 04. Musty smell in the elevators and halls reminded me of a Fraternity house, which is pretty close to the experience we had. Paper thin walls allow you to hear the TV in the room next door, as well as everything else (you get the point...). It is in a pretty good location, short walk to the mall and the beach. If you are young and don't mind the smell, Spartan room furnishings and the noise, this place may do, just don't pay rack rate, not nearly worth it.

Cool Pool is only plus.

We stayed two nights at the Albion for my birthday.
(Friday and Saturday) I got a huge room on the 6 floor over looking Lincoln Road. Along with the view came the pungent smell of cigarettes. They switched me to a non-smoking room with no problems. This room had an eerie moldy smell in place of the cigarettes and was significantly smaller. Save for the notable odor, the room had no character or charm. I called for a bucket of ice (no ice machines) and waited an hour before having to call again. I finally got it after a total waiting time of 90 minutes. The following day we went to The Pantry (the hotels mock cafe) and saw a sign for "Continental Breakfast $10.00"; Made a u-turn and had breakfast at a nearby restaurant.
In all, the most fun we had was at the pool. A true gem of the Art Deco style (the hotel is designed to look like an ocean liner). The staff is at best average. Bottom Line: Not worth $100 a night.

OK, but not great

from enzopdoodle
I agree with the other so-so reviews. We stayed just one night (we were on the road), and I wouldn't have been comfortable for, say, a week. Pluses: comfortable bed with nice linens, fantastic location. Minuses: teeny-tiny and slightly worn bathroom, small closet, frazzled staff. We got a low Priceline price. Wouldn't have been worth the rack rate.
