Loved the Reach

from A TripAdvisor Member
We read the negative reviews prior to visiting the Wyndham Reach but found a completely positive experience. We didn't mind paying the resort fee($12). We expected to pay extra for parking on an island that has limited parking spots to begin with. In addition to parking, the fee included the fitness center, fruit at the pool, use of the towels, plus extremely helpful staff at the pool and beach. You also have the option of using the facilities at the Casa Marina. Out of all the resorts on the island this resort has the most beach space. There are resorts closer to Duval Street but cruise ships tend to block your view of the water and there is no beach. I highly recommend staying at the Reach.

Full of pleasant surprises

from A TripAdvisor Member
Prior to our stay at the resort, my husband and I were very concerned after reading the poor reviews. When we arrived, however, we were pleasantly surprised with both the staff, grounds and our room. We found the lobby staff very accommodating as we arrived extremely early and received an upgrated room, free of charge, on the spot. It helped that we were Wyndham by Request members (which is free if you go to the Wyndham website). When we entered our room, we were shocked by the its cleanliness and the size. We had a large veranda/balcony (the largest of any on the resort). Inside our room, we had a queen size sleeper sofa, glass table with 3 chairs for my husband and I to enjoy our take-out meals, a king-size bed, a chair, and swivl-top table for our TV which can be viewed from either our bed or the sofa. In addition, we had a large portable refrigerator that we could store lunch meat, water, soda, etc., a wetbar stocked with overpriced items, a large bathroom area with a stall shower and bathtub with a clothesline where you can hang your wet items and a separate vanity with a sink and large mirror. The only downside was hearing the sound of a jackhammer every morning at 10am right below our room. Thus, not allowing us the freedom of sleeping in. The beach area at the resort was beautiful and well kept (much nicer than the Casa Marina). However, we did run into a lot of seaweed at the edge of the water as well as in it. The beach area staff was fair (depending on the person you had that day). They expected a tip everytime they got you a towel and chair and if you didn't tip, they were rude to you the following day. We didn't feel it necessary to tip as we were paying the $10.00 a day resort fee for that service, plus the staff doesn't let you get your own towels and chairs.
There were a few shaded areas on the beach which was nice because there were only 3 or 4 umbrellas available to all of the vacationers staying at the resort. I suggest that you get to the beach early if you want an umbrella. The pool area was small and it was difficult to find a shaded area unless you arrived early. The pool staff, however, was very friendly. If you are looking for a nice pool area, try the Casa Marina.
We ate at Shula's and had great service and delicious food; however, it is a little overpriced (especially the wine). The location of the resort is great if you want peace and tranquility. It is about a half an hour walk to the main attractions on Duval Street. I suggest renting bikes or Mopeds if you plan on going to Duval Street or seeing other parts of the island each day. If we would return to Key West, we would definitely stay at the Reach because we liked having a beach at our disposal.

A great family hotel...August 11,2003

It was our first time at the Reach, we really loved it, we found the service to be great, Mike at the Sand bar was really super, he came to our seats on the beach and bought us plenty of ice for our sons bottles aswell as our pina coladas. Very friendly people, very helpful staff.
The room was good, very well AC, Chris the bell hop was great also, got us our cab when we needed it. The only thing we saw was a problem was the lack of umbrellas on the beach, you had to get down early to get one, which wasnot a problem for us. The food at the sand bar was terrific, Also at Shulas, great shrimp app..We got a babysitter from the Casa Marina for our 6 month old, she was great. Overall a great place , definatly go back again!!

Better than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading marginal to poor reviews of this property, I was very worried about what we would find on arrival. We were pleasantly surpirsed. The room was large and well appointed. Bathtub & separate shower, glass dinette table w/ 4 chairs, easy chair/ottoman, full size sofa sleeper for the kids, wet bar, etc. The pool was large and well kept. Kids liked having the beach on the property, but didn't like the seaweed. Air-conditioner was cold when we needed it to be. The $12.50 daily resort fee was stiff, but included garage parking, up to 30 minute free local calls, a nice fitness center and a few other things that we didn't use. All in all, if you get a good rate, go for it!
Duval Street is just one block away!

Customer Service Stinks!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just returned from a weekend stay at the Reach. We checked in Friday and our room was quite warm. I spoke to the manager on duty and he said he would have someone come up to fix it. We went to dinner and came back at 11:30 pm and our room was VERY warm - thank goodness I had brought a small fan or we wouldn't have been able to sleep at all that night. The next morning I again asked the manager to have the air checked (even asked him to come up and check the temperature for himself). He said he would send someone up. I left to go to the beach for a while and when I came back it was STILL not fixed! I called again and the manager(who was quite annoyed that I called AGAIN) said he would send someone up to put in a new unit - it wasn't installed until early evening. We slept in comfort Saturday night until about 5:45 am on Sunday morning when a large (and noisy) delivery truck to the hotel woke us up. The hotel management and staff are not customer friendly at this hotel - everyone seems annoyed that they have to be there and deal with customers. The only friendly employee I met there was the valet when we first arrived, but on the way out we had to wait 1/2 hour for someone to go get the valet on duty and we could retrieve our keys! I will never stay at this resort again! I enjoy a beautiful, comfortable resort with a friendly staff (who are happy to be there) and the Wyndham Reach Resort is NOT one of them.

Pick Another Hotel

My advice, don't stay here. The Casa Marina is a lot better, but both are over priced. Everything cost extra, the hotels are old and need to be torn down and rebuilt, or just lower their rates. The pool staff were great, the front desk staff not friendly at all. I suggest a newer hotel or one that is less costly, maybe includes at least breakfast.
Loved Key West though!! It was a blast.

Way overpriced

from A TripAdvisor Member
Expensive for what you get. I did not get the size room I requested and was told there were no other rooms available. The pool is good. The beach area was dirty. The food is ok but is overpriced as well. The view from the top floor looking over the city is good. I would look elsewhere to stay next time.

got engaged on the pier

from A TripAdvisor Member
after reading the reviews after i booked my reservation, i got nervous.
old, dirty and small was the common characteristics. when i got there and spent some time in the city, the whole city overall is old and historic. that's what makes it fun. all the buildings are old like the reach. the hilton being the real done up hotel on the other side of the island. my room was cleaned everyday and the room was fine. the extra charge did suck and should have been mentioned in booking on priceline.
the beach was the nicest we saw. keep in mind there are no real big nice beaches around the are. what do you really expect for all of the people complaining when they book through priceline for 60-70 bucks a night? you can barely stay in a holiday inn off the interstate for that price.

great beach butttttt...

from bongo116
Stayed at the Reach Feb. 2003 for four days. Key West itself is great.
The people are laid back and Duval St. is a blast, a mini mardi gras.

The Reach has one of the only real beaches on the island and it's very nice but small. By mid day the beach and the pool (also nice but small) are very crowded.

Some highlights are having breakfast on the deck overlooking the ocean, Mike, the beach guru, will set up any adventure you want, the jet ski tour around the island is great and lunch at the beach side bar was also good.

The rooms are small and in dire need of a good cleaning. There was dust an inch thick on some of the light fixtures. Fortunatley we didn't stay in our room too long.

Overall the Key West experience is amazing and the Reach will satify nicely if you can get a good deal. Paying full price is tough to swallow because the faciltites are not worth it.

Second time not a charm

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just returned from here for the second time. The first time my hotel room was burglarized and the staff tried to blame my traveling companions. A few years later thought I'd try again. My mistake. We arrived and checked in at the Reach. We were given a room key went to the room and opened the door and someone was already occupying the room. Went back to front desk, was told sorry, we are overbooked(very unapologetic) and were sent to the Wyndham Casa Marina. This was a blessing in disguise. The property there is far superior to the reach and the staff were friendly and accomodating. Never Again. Do yourself a favor and if you want to stay at a Wyndham property stay at the Casa Marina.

Top Local Tips for Key West

Short drive, great food Square Grouper at mile marker 22.4 is a thirty minute drive but the food was fantastic. We went for lunch and loved everything. They are closed Sunday and Monday

Champagne Sunset Sail The "Sebago" Watersports Champagne Sunset Sail is a great deal at only $39. We had a FABULOUS time, met some fun people, were entertained by a fantastic crew who constantly kept our glasses full, and saw a spectacular sunset!

Good places to eat breakfast Camilles resaurant three blocks from the Reach Resort has amazing food
