The Southernmost on the Beach is in an excellent location. We had a great view over the sea from our room. The staff were friendly and informative and really made us feel welcome. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

Very pleasant - Great Experience

First time in Key West. We got very lucky. We picked a great location. If you want to spend time on the beach away from all the noise, this is the best location. It has a nice little beach right next door with it's own tiki bar/snack bar that you can charge to the room. (Only Hotel on the southside that has this)

Once we better figured out the area we did notice that we were on the opposite side of the Key were all that action was. It's a one (1) mile walk to get to the Sunset festival each day(you can't miss this) We didn't mind too much...we needed the exercise! Bottomline if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of Duval street this is a GREAT place to go. But when you DO want to go out and have some fun, it starts only just one block from your room.

True Key West Experience

If you are looking for a hotel to get the true Key West Experience. Southernmost On The Beach is the place.
I recently stayed at the Southernmost Hotel on the Beach. I just wanted to say that I was so happy with my choice. The location, staff, and accommodation were wonderful. I wanted the Key West experience without the stuffy business atmosphere of your chain hotels and I got just the experience I wanted and needed.
You have the beach with palm trees, the Duval Beach Club, Nice Pool, a pier, and if you want more action you just travel north on Duval Street.
I hope to go there again next year.

Great Place to stay in Key West

My family spent a week (June 20 - 27) in Key West and stayed at the Southernmost On The Beach. In summary this was a great place that is away from all the "noise" of Duvall Street. The Southernmost On The Beach has approximately 40 rooms with 1st and 2nd levels. We stayed in room 118 which was near the office, but you could still see the ocean. The room was very clean with very modern and newly updated accomodations. We had two queen beds that were very comfortable. I liked that the A/C unit was near the bathroom as it made for a very comfortable temperature during the night. And it is HOT in June in Key West. The bottom rooms have a bay window and the top rooms have a balcony. I would recommend that you get a second floor room if possible. We were told that only the 1st floor rooms have the double queen beds. The 2nd floor rooms have a king bed. In any case, I would recommed that you request room 227/228 as this is over the pool and you also get an excellent view of the beach/ocean and the Duvall Beach Club. Now there is one end room that has a bay window that directly faces the ocean. I'm not sure but I believe this was room 215. Overall the staff was friendly. The maids did not say much but did a good job. The Southernmost On The Beach is not a resort hotel, so if you are looking for a resort with resturants and shops, this is not it. However for the price, quality of accomodations, location near the beach, and pool, I'm not sure if you can find a better place. Note that the pool, I believe is olympic size and was very clean. There is a shop near the pool where you can get hotel towels (free) and buy drinks, shirts, and pool inflatables. A very nice man named "Ray" will help you out and he even brought my wife and daughter frozen wash clothes to help them cool off by the pool. Overall I would recommend the Southernmost On The Beach to anyone. When we go back we will stay again. I only have one small complaint. We made our reservations about 2 months in advance and I expected a room closer to the ocean. When I requested a room closer to the ocean upon check-in they could not accomodate that request. It appears, and this is my own opinion here, since our reservation was for 7 days long, they could fit that in with others only booking rooms for say 4-5 days. In any case, I am not complaining about room 118, it was very nice. However I would have liked to been in say room 227/228.

In summary, after doing alot of research on where to stay in Key West, with a family, this is the place. Now you will have to either walk or rent bikes/scooters or drive to get around into where the "action" is. However we liked the quietness of the southern end of Key West. Also there is an Ice Cream shop across the street with very good home made ice cream. The Duvall Beach Club is adjacent to the hotel and served good food. Loved the Southernmost on the Beach

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights in June 2004. It was everything I was hoping for. It had very nice facilities and a very friendly and helpful staff. It is as stated in other reviews on the quiet end of Deval St. We walked to everything except the airport. If you are not into walking there are plenty of other options for getting around. I would highly reccomend this hotel and would definitely stay here agian!

wonderful experience at hotel and resturant

We just returned from what can only be called a terrific trip. Our party tavelled to the keys for a wedding and all the guests were treated with courtousy and repect from both the hotel staff and those at the Duval beach club next door.

We enjoyed our accomidations and spent extensive time over on the beach that ajoins the hotel and the beach club. We enjoyed breakfast several times and even were served lunch on the beach without having to leave our chairs.

NO ONE in our party had a bad experience with anyone at the hotel or beach club. We will be sure to return in the near future!

Southernmost is a horrible place to stay

We traveled to Key West for my sister-in-law's wedding a few days ago. When we arrived the price for the room did not match the reservation price. Apparently, the weekend price is different from the weekday price which they neglected to tell us about when making the reservation. So instead of paying the qouted amount we were going to be charged $20.00 per night more for the weekend. Also, we were checked into a handicap room (which we were not told about before hand). This made it difficult for bathing our toddler since the room did not have a bath tub. Lastly, my sister-in-law also stayed in the same hotel except they stayed in a room with a balcony and beach view for an extra $65.00 per night. Basically, all this got them was a room on the second floor overlooking the parking lot. The worst part about all this is the response we were given by the hotel staff. They did not care one bit about the trouble we had been having. This is even talking to the managers. We immediately checked out of the hotel the next morning and found a new hotel (Avalon). Once we did get settled into our new hotel everything was great. Everyone else in Key West was very friendly and helpful.

Upmarket motel - but great location

This was basically an upmarket motel - you parked your car in front of your room, there was no bar, no restaurant, no breakfast. Note: if you want an ocean view request a room on the second floor - the first floor had a great view of the carpark but nothing else. Our room was small but clean, the view was definitely of the ocean but as everyone walks past your room to get to theirs there was little chance to enjoy it as the blinds had to be kept closed to avoid people peering in. Also no chairs outside the rooms so no chance to sit and enjoy the view with a cold beer. There is a pier which extends into the ocean and it would have been great to sit there and enjoy a cold beer and the view but the neighbouring resort played 'house-music' so loud that it was impossible. Having said all that, the location was good at the quiet end of Duval St., and the beach was pleasant. We would strongly recommend renting bicyles or a moped to get around. Fully agree that the Duval Beach Club was truly awful - a location to die for but miserable, rude waiters, bad food and dirty. Avoid it like the plague.

We had called the 800# to book a room at the Southernmost on the Beach, when when arrived "Dexter" told us we were booked at the Southernmost (not on the beach) and "we were confused" and we should have had a letter that the hotel sends to confirm the location. We never recieved such letter. Besides the booking fiasco, the hotel was average, quiet, in a good location and the staff were fine.We had only one bad experince at the Duval Beach club, with a persnickity waiter - apparently we sat ourselves so he felt it was ok to ignore us....so we left

Best in Key West

If you're looking for a relaxing very comfortable place that is close Duval St. This is the place,now I have to tell you right off,this place isn't cheap,but neither is their hospitality,Ask for Biker Bob at the desk (he's not really a biker,but he has a nice motorcycle) These people are Americans,very freindly,normal,and helpful. The Hotel is basically spotless,very well maintained and the rooms are comfortable and clean. They have a pier you can walk out on and lay out if you choose or take a swim,plenty of places to sit and kick back.The pool is clean and well maintained also,there is a beach right next door with a nice little restaraunt. If you want to shop or just hang out on Duval Street,it is just steps away,The hotel is on the "quiet" end of Duval but the walk isn't far to the lively area.

Top Local Tips for Key West

driving through the keys to get to Key West Fun, if you have a few people with you, and you have leisure time. Not as fun as you may expect. Maybe more fun on a motorcycle!! Traffic is horrible after I95 merges onto Rte. 1. Light after light, after light.....take the Florida Turnpike south if you want to cut out at least half an hour. You'll need about five dollars for tolls. Once all Key-bound traffic merges onto Rte. 1, it's mostly a two-lane highway the whole way. You can count on getting stuck behind a few slow vehicles, which is annoying if you're from the Northeast part of the country!! .....so make sure you have at least a 6-cylinder vehicle for passing!! The view is beautiful, though!! Again, if you have leisure time, stop for a drink at some funky local bars, take a quick dip in the ocean (bring towels!). Once you're in Key West, you will likely not need your car. You can walk and rent bikes inexpensively. We decided for the time and money spent doing this, that next time we're flying directly to Key West!!!

Scooters I would definitely recommend renting a scooter. We walked around everywhere we went and my feet were killing me by the end of the trip.

Bring water shoes The ocean off the beach is a bit rocky, I suggest bringing water shoes. We used the stairs off the sunning pier to access the ocean and it was not rocky and had very soft sand. We also brought some rafts and floated around so we didn't have to stand on the ocean floor.
