Okay & run of the mill

We enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Key West Hotel. The staff, mostly from Poland, Germany, and Slovakia, were very nice. We were disappointed in our room. I had asked for a ocean veiw and the registering clerk seemed totatlly unaware nor really cared. I always pick rooms that have a veiw when I am traveling. Our room looked out over the parking lot! I pick rooms with a veiw because this enhances my relaxation after a long trip. She told me that there were none available, but I checked the next morning and there were. The Hotel, also, looked a little run down. I think you should invest in some repainting. Our hostesses in the dining room were attentive and we enjoyed talking to them. But, if I return, I will probably choose a different hotel.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Sheraton Suites Key West Hotel

Way better than expected!

from DiverDrew
My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights to attend a friends wedding. We had very low expectations based on all the reviews read here, but am pleased to report we were both pleasantly surprised.

We used Starwood points for our room and spent a few more points to upgrade to an oceanview suite.

The oceanview suites were hit hard by the hurricance. As a result they have been refurbished. The decor was quite comfortable and the bathroom was very nicely done in dark woods, marble tile, and granite countertops. It was so nice that we took pictures to use in remodelling our own master bath at home. In the living area, there was also a nice food-nook including a small sink, coffee maker, and refridgerator. The only thing not up to standard in the room was the couch. It was comfortable enough but was quite shabby-looking. Still, not enough to worry about though.

Our oceanview suite was on the first floor. As a result we had a limited view of the beach, overlooking the parking lot and road. But overall it was still nice to be able to see the sand and water. Plus we only had to walk up a 1/2 flight of stairs to get to it.

The hotel grounds were immaculately groomed (as most Starwood properties are). Lots of bright paint and pretty flowers. The pool area was very nice and we loved the outdoor bar-gazeebo. We only ate one meal at the restaurant (sunday brunch). It was standard and perhaps a little over priced. We had appetizers several times at the bar and everything was good.

Apparently, the hurricane damaged one of the shuttles the hotel uses to transport guests to the airport and to the downtown area. As a result, they only had an 11-passenger shuttle taking guests downtown. This runs every half an hour up until 10pm. Only on one occasion did we not get on the shuttle because it was full. We simply waited for the next one. You may want to get to the shuttle pick-up 5-10 minutes early. For nights we stayed out later than 10pm, we took an $11+tip cab ride back to the hotel. No big deal.

During our stay they did not have the airport shuttle running. However, to go back to the airport (a 5 minute drive) the hotel arranged and paid for a taxi for us. A nice touch.

Overall, service was very good. The shuttle drivers were very knowledgeable of the area and shared their hurricance stories. The front desk staff were very helpful. Our favorite staffer was Booker from Columbus, OH. He seemed to be a jack-of-all-trades, driving the shuttle, providing towels and refreshment poolside, among other things. Quite a character.

Overall we had a great stay. Key West is laid back, but is a lot of fun for sure. Based upon having stayed in a refurbished room, I would highly recommend the Sheraton.

Not bad, not great!

I read so many bad reviews on here I contemplated cancelling - had they responded to my phone calls!!! But, due to the fact we called twice from the UK and no-one called us back we went anyway and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great!

On arrival we were assigned our room - feeling apprehensive on finally entering our room (our door didn;t work properly!!), we were relieved to see we had been put in a recently upgraded room - reason why we knew it had been just done, were the paint splashes on the floor!!! It was quite nicely done and the bathroom was very nice with a walk-in shower.

The pool area was OK, very small (much smaller than expected) and very few people around! As we had had a long drive, we decided to eat at the restaurant - very overpriced and had little/no atmosphere as there was no-one around!

Very little else I can say about the hotel - the staff all seemed pleasant enough, the room was nice enough - no balcony though, they were still doing some works to rooms and the corridor outside our room had seen better days - paint peeling etc, but maybe it was just lacking atmosphere?

Very Relaxing Get-away

I found the Sheraton Suites completely acceptable - I am puzzled by the unhappy travelers and bad reviews. Yes, there was work going on because of last season's terrible storms - but that is happeneing all over the island and it never interfered with our stay. The Sweet Sleeper bed is really comfortable, and having the extra space of a suite is really nice. Also, our room had a whirpool bath, which was a bonus. I liked the pool, and pool side bar - all of it was quiet and relaxing. The concierge was helpful and assisted us in renting scooters. It is not a 'luxury' hotel - but it captures the laid back feeling of the island and is very comfortable and welcoming. All in all, I liked it and would go back.

Okay Hotel but its not where the action is!!

The hotel is fine. The rooms are very average. We had a small suite which had a small sitting area with a TV and then a bedroom which could be closed off. The pool area is fine. Service was fine. After looking at a map it looked like the hotel might be on the beach but it's not. It is across the street from a beach but only a handful of rooms can actually see the ocean. Parking is free which is nice because parking can be costly at other hotels. However, its the trade off that you make because this hotel is not in the main part of Key West. Its on the other side of the island. They do provide a shuttle to the other side of the island, to the main part, to the Hyatt, in fact, but you'll find that you have quite a walk depending on where you want to go. We had a car and struggled with finding parking spaces when going over to Duval street and other areas (we got 2 parking tickets -- they monitor the parking meters pretty closely).. Many people rent scooters and such which may be a better way to go. One other advantage is that we didn't have the problem of being awakened by roosters early in the morning which was a big complaint of people staying in B&Bs on the other side of the island. However, next time I would probably opt to stay on the other side of the island just so we could be in the thick of things!

Nice hotel but far away

from tart2422
The hotel itself is very nice. We had a suite overlooking the pool which was very nice. Also allowed pets which was great for our dog. The only problem that it is very far away from duval. You either have to drive or take a shuttle/taxi which can be expensive. Great hotel, bad location.

Mold, Bad Service, and so much noise!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Horrible- We stayed at the Doubletree prior to this on our trip and would RUN back there if given the chance. Not worth any price or time! Service horrible, room had mold and horrible issues with sound. Here is part of a letter I wrote to management:

The staff was significantly less helpful and respectful than previous experiences. Not only was a member of my party yelled at by the "towel manager," but the front desk has been extremely unhelpful in resolving any of the issues. Additionally, our room had MOLD issues )and significant noise issues including the ability to hear those above us walk, open doors, and use the restroom. This is certainly unacceptable- especially on a relaxing vacation getaway. Not only does this not meet the standards one should expect in hospitality, but evidenced are issues in service that should not be seen in any industry.

I agree...Not Bad, Not Great

from onaflaa
We just got back after 6 days at the Sheraton. It was better than what we were expecting based on the reviews...we had a third floor suite over looking the pool area. Actually very nice...do not waste your money on Ocean View. It will overlook the roadway first...the pool is a much better view. The shuttle -----, and is always full. It is an $11.00 taxi trip each way to Duval Street which I paid at least once a day and the last return trip from Duval is 10:15 pm (way too early) and always packed...the hotel will reimburse to/from the airport but that is it. It only holds 11 people, after that you are on your own. Great beds, Clean rooms, old carpets...but no odors or bugs. Service was ok...i stay once a week at the W or the Westin in Manhattan...it certainly is not that, but we used Starwood's points and stayed for free. for that it was worth it. If I go to Key West again, and have to pay for a room...I will definately go to the Hilton on the water by the Duval. More money, but worth it. If you are on Starpoints...grab the free room, you will be fine! Oh yeah, the pool bar is very expensive (and i am used to Manhattan prices) we bought two bottles of Grey Goose and kept in the room refrig. Feel free to ask me any questions...others on this site have been very helpful for us ----

not bad,not great

from BreBre
My husband & I stayed at the Sheraton for 2 nights at the end of march 06. Pulling up it looked nice, upon closer inspection the paint could be touched up a bit. Check in was a breeze, they also had complementary cookies and lemonade at the front desk.
Petit the concerige was most helpful. I had actually e-mailed her prior to our trip and she forwarded tons of info and booked a jet ski tour for us. She had maps coupons, etc. and was very poliet.
Our room was on the third floor in the main building. The carpet in our room looked fairly new and clean, the ultra suede couch was stained, the beding was clean and comfortable. The bath was a jet tub and shower combo and could use a little caulking, the bottom of the tub was a bit stained. Base boards around the room showed a little wear and tear. The over all decor is 90's tropical
The pool is small but very clean.
The male baldheaded bartender was not so polite (no smile, suggestions or chit chat).
We ordered lunch by the pool fish sandwich(good) & chicken cesar (average). We did eat breakfast once, we did not eat the buffet it was average.
We did use SPG points, overall I was satisfied, there are nicer hotels in the starwood network but this was the only option in key west. I feel it is the right value in point for what you get. I would return again, after all I'd rather be out enjoying the keys then in my room.

enjoyable stay

from teriPortlandOregon
Our family stayed at the Sheraton March 26 through April 1, 2006. We had a enjoyable stay. Our room was acceptable, nothing fancy. The carpet was very stained. I was expecting the rooms to be updated but I don't think ours was. We paid for our room with Starwood points, not sure if they gave us an old room because of this. All in all the staff was very friendly and helpful. The front desk, restaurant, concierge, all wonderful. The shuttle could be a little trying. It could only transport 11 people, there were usually more than that waiting. Minor disagreements would result in who was there first. My husband decided to take a cab instead of argue a couple of times. This is probably due to it being the busy season. If you rent a car you have to pay 10.00 a day to park at hotel and up to 20.00 to park downtown. The shuttle was the way to go. The pool was sparkling clean and the beach was beautiful! Much more so than I expected after hearing Key West isn't known for it's beaches. We did several tours, fishing, dolphin watch, dry tortuga, etc. The weather was windy which caused the water to be choppy and cloudy. This made for a seasick trip to dry tortuga, and not very successful dolphin trip or snorkeling. Might save your money on these trips if conditions are windy. Key West exceeded my expectations, I can't wait to go back!

I stayed at the Sheraton for Spring Break with two high school seniors. Comfortable room with great balcony overlooking the pool. The frig and microwave are a nice addition. The pool was great - very clean, and well kept. Nice pool towels, but did require the guests to sign them out. I'm sure this helps cut down on missing towels. The shuttle service was nice into the downtown area, although it does not start until 10:00 am so we had to take a cab to breakfast a couple of times. The hotel does reimburse for cab from and to the airport. This is a really nice touch. The restaurant was over priced for what it is and we felt almost forced to get the breakfast buffet rather than order off of the menu.
Maid service appeared very late in the day a couple of times. Staff members were friendly and helpful. I would stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Key West

Waverunner tours/ parasailing We booked a waverunner tour from one of the roadside vendors - our family had a blast. Highly recommended!! Our children - ages 10, 14 and 19, went parasailing - they loved it! Mom & Dad enjoyed the time alone!

Jimmy Buffet's Original Margaritaville If you're a Buffet fan (and who isn't?), you got to go. But the whole experience is a let-down. And the margaritas were the worst in Key West. (OK, I didn't try them all.)

El Siboney amazing restaurant for lunch or dinner. For the money, get the full carafe of sangria! Yum!
