Historical Traveller Reviews of Pier House Resort and Caribbean Spa Hotel
Great Place to Stay
My husband and I recently returned from a stay at the Pier House Resort. We really enjoyed it. We stayed in one of the Caribbean Spa rooms - it was very spacious, had a nice bathroom and a great, very private patio. The pool/beach area was very nice and rarely crowded. On top of all that, the location was perfect. We would definitely stay at the Pier House again.
Poor Management and Way Overpriced

I stayed there this past month. The rooms are shabby at best. The individual air conditioning units were totally inadequate for the rooms and the heat. Sleeping in a room with a temp in the mid to high 80's sucks. But nobody at the front desk really cared. unless you pay top dollar for water view rooms that again are shabby at best you get a room looking at a parking lot or closed in with plants so you can't see anything.
Way overpriced. A front desk staff that does not care one way or another if you stay there or not. It is hard to see why anyone would pay for first class resort and get the crap they have at this place. The rooms at Ocean Key is 10 times better for about the same price.

The Pier House is a wonderful hotel. We stayed there for 2 nights during a trip around Florida. The staff are wonderful, very helpful and go out of there way to make your stay enjoyable. The food in the restaurant is wonderful. If you have dinner, try it on the pier when the fish are feeding in sea - it's amazing. We will definatly stay there again when visiting the keys.
Latest Stay in the KEYS
Just recently returned from a few days in Key West. This time we decided to try another hotel just for comparison. We chose the Pier House after much discussion and looking over reviews about this resort. We usually stay next to the Pier House at another resort and just wanted to check out the accomodations. The Bell Staff was very friendly and they were always willing to help you if you ever looked like you needed anything. That I must say was the one highlight of this resort. The room we requested was a Harbour View which we paid handily to be upgraded to over $120 more per night. The room compared to the other resorts mentioned was very standard and certainly wasn't worth the extra money. The Private Balcony that it boasts was only about 3 x 6 and barely had enough room for the 2 chairs and a small table. Not what I would call an upgrade. The Bath was average at best and the room was very small. On the bright side it was very quiet as their wasn't very many people at the resort and the pool area never seemed to have more than 6-10 people at any given time. The resort as a whole I feel has very nice and accomodating personnel, just lacks in prestige that a 4 Star Resort should offer. I guess my best summation is that I understand why it was rated 33rd. on the list. It's just overpriced for what you get.
Keep going back.....
We love the Pier house and have stayed there about 7 times including 3 New Years Eve's. It is absolutly charming and has an amazing location near Mallory Square and our favorite bars (Schnooners Wharf and Rum Runners. The rooms are small but have all recently been redone and are very comfortable. The 2nd floor rooms are my favorite as they have a vaulted ceing. Main complaint is the small bathrooms. Honestly you don't spend much time in your room and the grounds are amazing. Beautiful and lush landscaping, a great pool open 24 hours and a beach bar make this my favorite place to unwind. One complaint about the beach bar is the bar stools aren't as comfortable as they should be. Also at night the Chart Room where Jmmy Buffet used to play is in the complex. Great place for a beer before heading to bed at 2AM. Staying on Duval street is half the fun so I definitly reccommend Pier House. If it's too pricey I would stay at the Southernmost on the otherside of the island or if you have family with you the suites at the Ocean Key are great but we usually pick the Pier House.
Pier House Overpriced
Our 4 day at the Pier House, "Garden View" section for $350/night (before taxes !) resulted in the firm feeling that the hotel is over-priced for value received. Our room was definitely "nothing special", and the "beach" area is in direct line of sight of a nearby deck and walking area as well as the public as a whole. While not a big deal to us, the so-called "topless" area is simply an advertising gimmick. The $10 user fee for the "fitness center" pretty well sums up the management philosophy of the Pier House---charge top dollar, create the feeling of "exclusive" and maybe people will believe it --- we didn't. We did like the pool, and found the Hotel very conveniently located. Be sure to rent bikes (at the hotel next door) --- it's the only way to really get a feel for Key West.

Just returned from 5 days at the Pier House. Great location, great resort. The bathroom was indeed very small and the room was just average but the location and resort amenities made up for it. Our favorite place was Sunset Deck - you can sit for hours and watch all the boats on the Gulf. The food and service at the restaurants was very good. The chairs at the beach and pool were plentiful. The concierge was helpful and took care of all our reservation needs for dining and excursions prior to our arrival. The resort location is the best feature - it is away from the cruise ships that sit in front of the Hilton and Ocean Key and just out of the way from all the traffic on Duval. We walked everywhere and did not rent a car or a scooter. Our favorite dinner destination was in the harbor - we found a variety of restaurants from casual to upscale and evening walks were very nice. We have been to Key West several times and have stayed at many different places but this so far is our favorite. We will definitely return again and stay at the Pier House!

I just stayed there several days and I have to say at the end of the trip I was not satisfied. The location next to the harbour is nice but very much hustle and bustle around the hotel. The gardens are very small and there are no additional seating areas in the garden. The size of the pool is ok and much larger than I thougt. The chaos at the pool and beach area is not to believe. The Beach Boy is sitting all day long in his small tent and is really doing nothing! No used towls are taken away. Some of the service are really rough and not service oriented at all. I stayed in a Harbour Front room (nice view with all the ships) which needed a make-over. In the evenings (5 days per week) there is noisy music from the bar so you can't get asleep. Overall I have to say for that price you'd better stay in a charming hotel like the Marquesa.
They are selling the hotel as something special but its not!
Great Hotel / Great Location
I've been to Key West ten or eleven times and have always stayed at the Pier House. The grounds are beautifully kept, there is a nice pool, a small beach, and a convenient bar for drinks and snacks just off the beach. And enough of the ocean has been roped off to provide a place to swim or you can just sun yourself on the large wooden float just off shore. The staff is adequate and the person at the activities desk is very helpful in suggesting things to do and booking things like a sunset sail or a snorkling trip to the reef. IMO the best rooms are on the second floor overlooking the garden; rooms 422 - 428, e.g. They have an adequate veranda where you can sit in the morning and evening before going out, and if you are lucky, there will be an orchid blooming just outside. The bathrooms are large and the beds are comfortable. The food at the Pier House is very good, especially the conch fritters and stone crab claws (in season), but full dinners are pricey. It's better to eat out at the various bars aound the city. But there is a large open area atop the pier upon which the Pier House was built from which you can watch the sunset. Which brings me to the Pier House's strength - location, location, location. You can walk out the front door and you are on Duval Street. You can walk west to the Mallory Docks, El MEson De Pepe, and Kellys. Or you can walk east to the Key West Bight and Alonso's Oyster Bar, or the Half Shell Raw Bar.
The one things that occassionally annoys me is that there might be a folk singer who can be heard from the rooms late at night. Or there may be quests making noise at all hours aound the pool. Pjk
My husband and I spent our honeymoon at the Pier House and had a great time. Everything about the Pier House was wonderful. From the great location to the helpful staff, this is the only place to stay in Key West! Just beautiful.
Top Local Tips for Key West
Don't Miss Irish Kevin's
Irish Kevin's is a hoot! Don't miss it. The little bands they book are great fun, the crowd is ready to party, and the service is good. Adults from age 21 to seniors were there and everyone was enjoying themselves. This is not a place for children - it's a bar in Key West. Take the kids to Disney World and visit Irish Kevin's with other adults.
you can save almost 100.00 a night by booking several months in advance and if you are looking to save money by booking the cheapest room book the one with 2 queens instead of the king.....you get a better location.
Rent a sccoter for the afternoon - it's a great way to see the whole island in a day!
