Love the OCean Key Resort!

from Jillybean1953
We just returned from our first visit to Key West. We loved this resort, as did our two teenage daughters. The location on the water is great, being close to the action on Duval St ,but far enough away to be quiet. The kids liked the pool and being able to order food and drinks without having to leave their lounge chairs! The staff were friendly and courteous and rooms were clean. Would highly recommend this resort.

Outstanding in every way; exceeded our high expectations

We visited Key West during the week of Christmas and stayed at the Ocean Key resort; my wife and I and our two small children, 6yrs, and 2yrs. We highly recommend the resort; it exceeded our expectations in many ways.

First, the location could not be better. It's close to all the cool stuff to do, restaurants, right on the piers and docks, but just enough away from the street to avoid most of the noise from the continuous party that Key West seems to be.

The room was outstanding. We had a "small" room, which included an ample living room with a balcony, a convertable couch (kids slept there) a dining area and a reasonable kitchen, a separate bedroom (with door :-) and a great bathroom with a jacuzzi. There was even a washer-dryer in the unit, which we used several times. The decor was actually nice -- no "hotel art" but instead an interesting and nicely done room. It was very clean and well stocked.

Service was very good. Our washer broke on Christmas Eve and within a few hours they had replaced the whole thing with another working washer! Wow.

The resort ammenities were great. Nice pool and poolside bar and open air restaurant with great views of the harbors and sunsets. The main restuarant servs breakfast, and we ate there most days -- really unusual and excellent breakfast food. I never would have eaten there except the resort included in our price a large bunch of breakfast and beverage coupons -- enough that we never bought a breakfast and had enough drinks for the week. This was a wonderful thing -- I would have gotten price-sensitive without these (which I hate on a vacation).

Bottom line: this was the best places I have stayed for a vacation. Too bad we had a 2-year old and 6-year old -- we might have been able to have some fun otherwise :-))

The best hotel in Key West. You a right in the middle of the action of Duval street, but quiet in your room. Everything about this hotel is great and the staff go the extra mile to ensure your stay is wonderful!

The Ocean Key..only place to stay.

My wife and I just returned from Key West to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The Ocean Key is key. It is right at the end of Duval St. and right in the heart of the Sunset Celebration every night. The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. We had a ocean view Jr. suite, even though the only view we had was of a couple of palm trees, it was still a great view of the activities below and was quiet enough at night to sleep with the balcony doors open to get the sound of the water and breeze. The suite came with a jacuzzi tub and 2 TV's. The shower with the glass window facing the room was a nice touch. The staff was knowledgeable of the area and of what to do and very nice and well mannered. The bar outside was very nice and was a good place to wind down. But I do not recommend the water sports area adjacent to the resort...much cheaper at the marina. We will only be staying at the Ocean Key from now on. You cannot beat the location. I mean, who wants to drive to a hotel after a day of drinking and partying? rent a moped instead and really enjoy the area....just as a last note, spend the extra money for the suites....I saw the interior of the basic rooms and they were very small. Had a great time and the resort had alot to do with it...

A great way to celebrate a special occasion!

We stayed here Oct 30 - Nov 3 to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday.
Ocean Key exceeded my expectations. We had a deluxe room facing Mallory square with a balcony and a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The room was spacious. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever stayed in. The toiletries were so good, I stopped in a the gift shop downstairs at check out to buy a full size bottle of the shower gel. The staff was friendly, professional and always seemed to be there exactly when you needed them. Also the turn down service was cool because instead of chocolate, they placed a sea shell on your bed. I loved it! It was quiet at night so sleeping was not a problem and because of the time of year we traveled, we had a perfect view of the sunset. It isn't cheap, however, I highly recommend Ocean Key Resort in Key West.

Loved the whole thing !!!!!!!!

Husband took me to Key West in Nov 2002. Originally had reservations at Ambrosia House (TERRIBLE !) hated it but got in too late to change.
Went out first thing in the am to Ocean key to see if they had openings. They did and gave us quite a cheap "walk in" rate. Had our choice of a couple suites and chose one with a view of Mallory Square and a jacuzzi in the middle. LOVED IT. We didn't use the extra room in the suite which is when you came in but was a great barrier for hallway noise. Pool was small but nice with plenty of chairs and poolside service. Pier is a great place to watch sunset with reggae bands ( don't get a room overlooking pier though, think it would be very loud).
I had no problem with the cruise ships. Yes they were there everday when we got up but were not there for sunset. Was nice to sit on our balcony and watch the sunset and action in square. Everyone there is WONDERFUL - SO NICE ! We loved our stay here and would definitely go back there everytime. p.s. cuban restaraunt next to Hotel by Mallory Square is wonderful !

First timer in Key West. Rented a Harley Davidson Road King in Fort Lauderdale and rode down to Key West. Booked the hotel thru Expedia. Our room overlooked Mallory Square. Stayed an extra night and the hotel charged me the same rate that I got thru Expedia. Would highly recommend Ocean Key Resort.

Very nice...

We got a beautiful Ocean front king room with a jacuzzi and kitchen, plus four dinners at the hotel's resaturant for $289 a night, which sounds pricey but we felt it was very worth it. I had originally booked a room there on Expedia, then, to my dismay saw the type of room it was described here, and cancelled it. The person who described the Expedia room rate was right - it would have been a teeny room, no balcony, for $148 when it is basically a room that was meant as one of the bedrooms to a 2 bedroom suite. I was mad to pay the $25 cancellation fee, but at least we were very happy with the room and staff. Beautiful decor and awesome view of Mallory Square and the Gulf and an excellent dinner (though very expensive, probably wouldn't have eaten there if it wasn't included, as dinner for four was $210 for a salad, entree, and dessert per person, without any alcoholic beverages). Towels were plush, linens very comfortable, and housekeeping very good. The pool waiter was also excellent, as well as Bruce, who booked the reservation, and took his time explaining each type of room and packages offered. My only complaint was that when we got to our room, we noticed our honor bar was missing items, so we notified the front desk immediately, and also reminded them at check out, only to be billed for things we never took from it later. I called and they said they would adjust the charges on the credit card bill. I am waiting to see if this went through. If you stay, do an inventory of your honor bar and maybe even have someone check it too so you aren't charged $10 for 2 cokes you never drank! I thought this hotel was beautiful and in a prime location. Would stay here again for sure!

Went to Key West for the first time for a wedding the week of July 13, 2003. We all stayed near Mallory Square (great location - easy to get anywhere fast) in different hotels. We stayed at the Ocean Key Resort in a Jr. Suite Ocean View room for the first three days and a Ocean Front room the rest of the trip.

We then toured the different hotels: Hilton, Hyatt, Wyndam Casa Marina, Pierhouse and some local B&Bs. BY FAR, the Ocean Key was sooo much better. Beautiful (new) rooms, great location, super friendly staff and clean, clean, clean. The only drawback with the Ocean Key was the walls seemed a little thin in the Junior Suites when your neighbors were being loud...however, after reporting the complaint we were immediately moved to the Ocean Front room at no extra charge...very quiet (...and you can watch the sunset from you room in the jacuzzi tub). When you get tired of the touristy food, we highly reccommend two places:

1. El Mazon de Pepe (?) Cuban food off Mallory Square...just follow the music and get a mojito.

2. Pepe's on Green street near the harbor for home cooked meatloaf or a steak...don't miss the Big Ass Fan!

Make the effort to go to the Dry Tortugas -so worth it and the best snorkeling by far.

Worth every penny!

This was my first trip to Key West (July 19-21, 2003) and I wanted to make it special for my family, so I splurged on a two bedroom suite overlooking the ocean. I always research our prospective hotels for months before making a decision and you still cannot be sure you are going to get what is advertised. In this case, the reality far exceeded the expectations! The room was so large that when I came in the door and called my wife who was in the back bathroon, she could not hear me.
Features included two full baths, a large two person jacuzzi in the master bedroom, three tv's with vcr's, two boom boxes, a full kitchen, the best smelling shampoo and soap I've ever smelled (it's the little things), and a full sized washer and dryer that was not even mentioned when I made the reservation. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive and the location was perfect, despite the cruise ships (which didn't hinder my view at all). I've stayed at a lot of fine resorts, but it wasn't until the Ocean Key that I actually made it a point to tell the desk how impressed I was.

Top Local Tips for Key West

The Sunset Celebration Since there is usually always a cruise ship docked at the Westin, We found if you get to Mallory Square around 5:30ish in Feb, (an hour before sunset) and you get a prime spot on the end of the dock at Mallory Square. Don't move..cuz you will lose your spot. You will see the most beautiful sight!

Don't miss the Seaplane! We booked a flight on Seaplanes of Key West for a day at Dry Tortuga. This was the highlight of our trip. It's pricey, but worth every penny!

Don't rent the car (if you are in good health and physical condition) We flew directly into Key West mostly because we only had a few short days to enjoy ourselves and a 4 hour drive down from Miami (or more per some friends who drove) seemed too long, maybe next trip. I could not have been more pleased with this decision. A car would have been more of a liability and expense than it would be worth. Not only did our hotel charge $20/day to park, we witnessed a scooter get rear ended by a car, a shuttle bus hit the mirror of a parked mini van, and other near misses with small streets, lots of tourists and many drunk pedestrians as the night went on. We were able to walk from one side of Duval to the other. There are trolley's and tour trains to take you where you need to go. If you so choose rent a scooter for a day! It was only $15 taxi fare for 2 from the airport to 0 Duval. Bikes are also available to rent, they are throughout town if your feet get sore. Even when I come back with my 71 year old mom, we will walk and use the trolley.
