Terrible Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at this Holiday Inn March 1-8, 2004--It was a terrible experience. We found the staff to be rude and very unwilling to help.It took 3 days and 6 requests to get 2 extra pillows (we were told they ran out). Finally, after talking to a manager, we were able to get them, but she did not seem concerned that we made several requests and did not get them! Our room was extremely disgusting! The carpet was filthy, the lamp shades in the room were covered with what looked to be rust stains, there was mold & mildew inside the bathroom and the furniture was ancient. The Gulfview is a view of the landfill and the beach is some sand next to the main road (I called the hotel prior to making reservations to ask about the beach-and a very different description was given). The hotel billed our credit card twice for the same stay, it took almost a week and 3 phone calls to Holiday Inn customer service to get this resolved. Holiday Inn customer service does not seem concerned about the problems with this hotel!

We just returned from a 4 night stay at The Holiday Inn, and we loved it. The pool was great, the room was clean and reasonably priced and the cost of food and drinks was downright cheap (to Key West standards). I have a ten year old son who really enjoyed himself and it was completely relaxing for the adults. As far as the staff goes, everyone was friendly, fun and helpful. We travel to Key West annually and we'll stay here next year and beyond.

Try a different hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Try a different hotel...The hotel is next to a landfill (advertised as Gulf View) and their beach was small and filled with trash...the room was run down and furniture was old (circa 1962)...the bathroom was beat up and beware of the seagulls from the landfill...It is also a 12-15 dollar cab ride each way to Duval Street...The staff was pleasant and helpful...But I will definately try different accomodations next time around...Say no to holiday inn...This was a 220-dollar a night hotel...There are many choices out there so unless your really in a bind, I'd book another place!

Hated this hotel

At first sight we didn't mind this hotel -- we already knew it wasn't downtown so we were ok with that. We had an oceanfront room with a great view (as one reviewer mentioned, if you can ignore the landfill next door). The pool looked nice (walk-in pool) but very full. That's where the good points ended. The carpeting in our room was wet upon our arrival, and stayed that way for the next 3 days. We had to wear our shoes in the room. The carpet made the room stink like a cross between a wet dog and rotting garbage. Disgusting! The hotel was also VERY noisy. The "beach" is just a few yards of sand with some lounge chairs and the water was trash filled. Wouldn't go near it. Would not recommend their restaurant. Went there for breakfast and wound up spending over an hour there due to poor service (and the restaurant wasn't even full). We were seated next to the buffet, and although we didn't try it, we heard plenty of bad comments (basketball eggs, no waffle mix for waffle makers, no plates (one couple had to waite 10 minutes for plates) and the hostess actually gave away one couple's table while they were in the buffet line. Will never ever stay here again nor recommend it to anyone.

Hard working staff!!

There really is no beach at the beachside. But, there is a pier and a wonderful pool. I would avoid this property in the future only because of its location on a noisy & busy road with not much of a view. I do want to commend the front desk staff who cope with lines of antsy customers all day long. The front desk ladies are embattled all day and all night long with stressed out vacationers but they never blinked an eye, or uttered a rude word. They are not overly chatty or friendly, but are extremely competent and don't rest for a moment all day long.
They were a bright spot in an otherwise chaotic and overcrowded trip.
Try the Cuban cafe across the street if you can manage to cross the street without being killed. Good food, low prices, fast service.

Total Lack of Quality Inn

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a total lack of quality. The carpet in the bathroom was moldy and had an odor that permeated the whole room. The carpet was dirty and the bed linens paper thin. The only nice feature was the room safe, but for $150 a night it was awful. We left a day early rather than spend another night there. And it's on the far side of the island from everything, right where the overseas highway enters Key West.

Enjoyed our stay

Spent four nights, loved the Tiki Bar, and pool. Location was great. Plan on going back this spring and taking in as much of Key West as we can cram into our soul.

So-So Hotel on a Great Island

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent 7 nights between Christmas and New Year's at this hotel. Hotel has a new owner, and renovations are taking place -- although this information was not volunteered. Staff seemed overwhelmed since the hotel was sold out, and at times, snippy. My son was sleeping on a pull out sofa, and I was told "sorry, we have no blankets left". After telling them that is an unacceptable answer, somehow they found an extra bedspread which he used for the next 7 nights. Pool was great; breakfast buffet was good. Hotel is at opposite end of the town, and shuttles pick up/drop off times were unreliable. Restaurants and shops are across a busy 4 lane highway. Key West is great, beaches are nice, shops/restaurants are great. Next time I'll stay downtown.

Loved it!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading the reviews already posted, I was nervous about coming to the Holiday Inn. Boy was I wrong! The hotel is beautiful, staff extremly nice, rooms clean and always had clean towels and even pool towels everyday! It is 3 miles from downtown but there is a shuttle that you can pay for and you can get on and off all day. It is a great way to get a tour of the island. I suggest the Holiday Inn to anyone going down!

I stayed at the Key West Holiday Inn in July 2002. It is not by the downtown area, you'll have to rent a bike or scooter (which we didn't mind). The beach was pretty awful, but we loved the pool. If I remember correctly, they had soothing music playing out of speakers which were disguised as rocks. There were lush tropical plants around the pool area, too. It was nice.

Top Local Tips for Key West

beware I saw warning signs about not going in the water at the beach

Conch Tour Amazing If you have never been to Key West before make sure you take the Conch train tour. It is interesting and fun and a good starting point for your further exploration of the island.

Rental cars If you have one, use it. Plenty of parking everywhere, despite what you may hear. We took ours everywhere we went and never had a problem parking. We even parked on the block where the Southermost point is with no problem.
