Perfection
from A TripAdvisor MemberWonderful experience
from A TripAdvisor MemberIdyllic!
from jeanniepepEach day we received a newspaper at our room (and one day I was handed one personally as I was enjoying breakfast by the pool), to enjoy with the mountain of fresh fruit, baked goods, coffee and juice that were included in the room price. Every evening we were treated to unlimited wine, cheese, crackers, and more fresh fruit in the courtyard.
The location was just perfect - only a block away from the madness of lower Duval and a short stroll to the *really* fun places near Key West Bight. Fausto's, a well-stocked grocery with "locals" prices is right around the corner (he who shops on Duval pays $10 for 8 aspirins). A fabulous bookstore with friendly service and great prices is also around the corner. It's in the heart of beautiful Old Town, perfect for all the daytime neighborhood-strolling you can handle. Although Heron House is a few short steps from any and every kind of party, it is surprisingly quiet and serene. It made for two vacations in one - a little bit of Mardi Gras, and a little bit of spa-style rejuvenation.
The staff was amazing - invisible to allow you a private retreat, until you needed something and they seemed to magically appear. Our room was immaculate every day when we returned from sight-seeing, which was a feat because we are not the world's tidiest vacationers. If there was one drawback, it was the lack of hot water and water pressure overall, but that's a Key West thing, not a Heron House problem. When you're 100 miles from the mainland water source, that kind of thing will tend to happen.
I would absolutely recommend Heron House to anyone planning to visit Key West, whether for relaxation or for fun.
B
from troutflyHeron House a big big disappointment!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberYes, I read the reviews and just can't imagine how someone can rate this place above average or excellent. I rate it terrible. However, we did find another place which costs the same amount of money, and it was fabulous!! Excellent clean linens, bright & light with tropical colors, two rooms, roman tub, waterfront balcony - vacation saved!!
Highly Recommend!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWelcome sanctuary from nearby Duvall Street
from A TripAdvisor MemberFurnishings adequate but lacked imagination. Breakfast by the pool was excellent and evening cheese and wine a neat idea. Efficient, unobtrusive service. Would definitely go again.
overpriced - over-rated
from A TripAdvisor MemberWhat a pleasure!
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy only criticism would be that the the tile floor needed more attention. The soothing music playing throughout the day made for a relaxing environment. The continental breakfast was plentiful, and the wine and cheese in the evening was a very nice touch. It was quiet and relaxing. They've done a lovely job with the grounds which are lush.
Even though Jorge was working long hours due to a shortage of staff, he always greeted you with a smile and was very hospitable. I would highly recommend it and will stay there again.
The good, the bad, and the ugly!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe good: location, personnel, service, grounds, wine & cheese, breakfast choices.
The bad: room furnishings, some plants in plastic pots (a shame in such lush surroundings), 12" tv, dark tiny room.
The ugly: shower enclosure barely large enough to bend over in, dirty grout, rusted shower curtain rod, dollar store shower curtain rings, pedastal sink with no area to put toiletries anywhere in the bathroom.
Top Local Tips for Key West
Tips about Key West Eat at local restaurants, their drinks and food are usually better than the heavily advertised, like Sloppy's Joes, Hog's Breath and Margarittaville. Try Fogerty's and the Flying Monkees Saloon, the Blonde Giraffe for great key lime pie, and try Lattitudes on Sunset Key for a unforgettable romantic dinner. Save yourself the $25 on the train or trolley and get a walking guide available at most places and walk or bike ride to everything. It's really fun. The Key West Cemetary was very interesting, also the Bigg's beach was a very nice place. No need to rent a car, a quick taxi cab ride from the airport usually runs about $7.50 a person, and calling them to pick you up, they are very prompt.
Places to go, places to avoid If you are willing to splurge - Cafe Marquesa, Nine One Five and Pisces and lunch at the Casa Marina poolside (great beach views, but watch out for hungry seagulls that may try to swoop after your fries etc., DON'T feed them under any circumstances). For modest budgets, try Sarabeth for brunch or dinner. Avoid Cafe Sole which was pricey and overrated. For sightseeing, the Butterfly Conservatory is quite fun. If you plan to go to the Hemingway House, the guided tour makes it more interesting than it really is. The Lighthouse Museum is really boring, unless you want a bird's eye view of the area by climbing a few steps to get to the top. The Nancy Forrester Secret Garden was just alright, not sure if it was really worth the admission. The Aquarium actually was decent. Though small in size, it had some interesting exhibits. Their guided tour also enhances the experience.
Key West Tip Stay as close to Duval St as you can since that is where the majority of the nightlife is. Not a car friendly area, but very walkable. You can also rent "golf carts", bicycles, mopeds or very expensive taxi rides.
