Perfection

We just returned from a memorable stay in Key West. What made it special was the Heron House! The staff is simply the best, the location cannot be beat, and the rooms are very nice. Give this wonderful inn a try!

Wonderful experience

The hotel grounds are beautiful and private. It is very relaxed and romantic. The staff is extremetly attentive, thought, and helpful. We enjoyed the whole experience- small (so you meet other adults getting away), nice (from the cedar lined closet with the robes to the wine cork & glasses, no detail is overlooked), convenient (the hotel is one block north of Duval street and an small walk from everything downtown). Don't rent a car there is no place to park, take a cab and rent a bike or mopad later. We really did enjoy our stay here and plan on coming back. We want to give a special thanks to George (front desk and over all great guy) for making our stay extra special!

Idyllic!

We stayed at the Heron House in mid-March 2004, and could not have been more satisfied! Upon arrival, we felt we were way out of our league in the gorgeous marble lobby (we're normally on a Motel 6 budget), but the host made us feel very welcome and at home. We were delighted to learn they had upgraded our room to a suite with a jacuzzi tub for two! Just outside our door was a beautiful tropical garden with a waterfall leading out to the fish pond/aquarium in the common area. The whole property was just gorgeous, but opening our door to this sight every morning was a special treat.

Each day we received a newspaper at our room (and one day I was handed one personally as I was enjoying breakfast by the pool), to enjoy with the mountain of fresh fruit, baked goods, coffee and juice that were included in the room price. Every evening we were treated to unlimited wine, cheese, crackers, and more fresh fruit in the courtyard.

The location was just perfect - only a block away from the madness of lower Duval and a short stroll to the *really* fun places near Key West Bight. Fausto's, a well-stocked grocery with "locals" prices is right around the corner (he who shops on Duval pays $10 for 8 aspirins). A fabulous bookstore with friendly service and great prices is also around the corner. It's in the heart of beautiful Old Town, perfect for all the daytime neighborhood-strolling you can handle. Although Heron House is a few short steps from any and every kind of party, it is surprisingly quiet and serene. It made for two vacations in one - a little bit of Mardi Gras, and a little bit of spa-style rejuvenation.

The staff was amazing - invisible to allow you a private retreat, until you needed something and they seemed to magically appear. Our room was immaculate every day when we returned from sight-seeing, which was a feat because we are not the world's tidiest vacationers. If there was one drawback, it was the lack of hot water and water pressure overall, but that's a Key West thing, not a Heron House problem. When you're 100 miles from the mainland water source, that kind of thing will tend to happen.

I would absolutely recommend Heron House to anyone planning to visit Key West, whether for relaxation or for fun.

We recently visited the Heron House in July and fell in love with the place! Our room was a Deluxe Garden and it was spacious and had so many nice little details such as stained glass and granite counters. We met many great people from all over since there are only 23 rooms. The wine and cheese happy hour was a great touch. The sundeck is not to be missed by sun worshipers like myself. David at the front desk was very helpful with anything we may have needed. The grounds were of no compare to any other B & B in Key West. We will for sure visit the Heron House on our next trip to the island. We loved it and Key West!

Heron House a big big disappointment!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
First impression was great...nice lobby, friendly host and a glass of chilled wine when we signed in....but the room was a total disappointment to us....it was nothing special, not what you'd expect from a B&B, just your below-average dark motel room, but this one had a horrible smell....after an hour we couldn't bear it any longer (even with the ac on and door opened) so we asked if they would move us into another room, preferrably one less dark, dank and smelly. This appeared to be a problem, but a couple of hours later they did move us upstairs into an identifical room which still had an odor but sprayed with lots of perfumed air freshner. So we endured, determined not to let our disapppointment spoil our vacation. However, after coming back from dinner and getting into bed for the night, the sheets were thin and pilly and the big dark green throw pillow on my bed was covered with white stuff..yuk. I was afraid to even touch the comforter. Further, the bottoms of my feet were black with dirt as obviously the tile floor had not been cleaned. I can't even talk about the bathroom or the television which were both the tiniest things I've ever seen. In the morning after a restless and mostly sleepless night, we decided we had to leave. My friend has allergies and was coughing and feeling just miserable. I told the management we had to check out and asked for a refund for the night we wouldn't be there (we had prepaid a total of $421 for two nights) which they refused to do. Heron House really misrepresents itself
Yes, I read the reviews and just can't imagine how someone can rate this place above average or excellent. I rate it terrible. However, we did find another place which costs the same amount of money, and it was fabulous!! Excellent clean linens, bright & light with tropical colors, two rooms, roman tub, waterfront balcony - vacation saved!!

Highly Recommend!

We just returned home from the Heron House and were not disappointed. Everyone was extremely friendly and the surroundings were very relaxing. The breakfast in the morning and the wine & cheese happy hour are terrific. The one minor problem we had in our room was fixed within 5 minutes of informing the front desk. My one recommendation would be to have coffee makers in the rooms. Other than that, everything was ideal and we would definitely return.

Welcome sanctuary from nearby Duvall Street

Great location in old part of town and within easy walking distance of everything - don't bring your car unless you are willing to pay dearly for parking. Go for a deluxe garden room if you want space and privacy - ask for room 49. Tired small bathroom needed enlarging and updating.
Furnishings adequate but lacked imagination. Breakfast by the pool was excellent and evening cheese and wine a neat idea. Efficient, unobtrusive service. Would definitely go again.

overpriced - over-rated

Given the price per night, the innkeepers were total snobs. The clientel seemed like they got lost on the way to a Greatful Dead concert. We did not fit into this scenerio!

What a pleasure!

We also stayed in a standard poolside room ($189, plus tax). Although the room and bathroom were small (we do not need a lot of space), we were quite happy spending 7 nights there. It was nice to have a tv and very comfortable bed. The room, bathroom, and linens were very clean.
My only criticism would be that the the tile floor needed more attention. The soothing music playing throughout the day made for a relaxing environment. The continental breakfast was plentiful, and the wine and cheese in the evening was a very nice touch. It was quiet and relaxing. They've done a lovely job with the grounds which are lush.
Even though Jorge was working long hours due to a shortage of staff, he always greeted you with a smile and was very hospitable. I would highly recommend it and will stay there again.

The good, the bad, and the ugly!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The following is based on a "standard room" for $189/night. We upgraded to another room @ $329/night after two nights.

The good: location, personnel, service, grounds, wine & cheese, breakfast choices.

The bad: room furnishings, some plants in plastic pots (a shame in such lush surroundings), 12" tv, dark tiny room.

The ugly: shower enclosure barely large enough to bend over in, dirty grout, rusted shower curtain rod, dollar store shower curtain rings, pedastal sink with no area to put toiletries anywhere in the bathroom.

Top Local Tips for Key West

Tips about Key West Eat at local restaurants, their drinks and food are usually better than the heavily advertised, like Sloppy's Joes, Hog's Breath and Margarittaville. Try Fogerty's and the Flying Monkees Saloon, the Blonde Giraffe for great key lime pie, and try Lattitudes on Sunset Key for a unforgettable romantic dinner. Save yourself the $25 on the train or trolley and get a walking guide available at most places and walk or bike ride to everything. It's really fun. The Key West Cemetary was very interesting, also the Bigg's beach was a very nice place. No need to rent a car, a quick taxi cab ride from the airport usually runs about $7.50 a person, and calling them to pick you up, they are very prompt.

Places to go, places to avoid If you are willing to splurge - Cafe Marquesa, Nine One Five and Pisces and lunch at the Casa Marina poolside (great beach views, but watch out for hungry seagulls that may try to swoop after your fries etc., DON'T feed them under any circumstances). For modest budgets, try Sarabeth for brunch or dinner. Avoid Cafe Sole which was pricey and overrated. For sightseeing, the Butterfly Conservatory is quite fun. If you plan to go to the Hemingway House, the guided tour makes it more interesting than it really is. The Lighthouse Museum is really boring, unless you want a bird's eye view of the area by climbing a few steps to get to the top. The Nancy Forrester Secret Garden was just alright, not sure if it was really worth the admission. The Aquarium actually was decent. Though small in size, it had some interesting exhibits. Their guided tour also enhances the experience.

Key West Tip Stay as close to Duval St as you can since that is where the majority of the nightlife is. Not a car friendly area, but very walkable. You can also rent "golf carts", bicycles, mopeds or very expensive taxi rides.
