Doubletree is a Disgrace

Had my daughter's wedding here. We had a great time with family and friends, and the hotel is beautiful, but the business end with the Doubletree was a nightmare. Their expert recommendations for the amount of food at the cocktail hour were way off. After being told it was plenty of shrimp, and plenty of cheese for fifty people, the food was gone in ten minutes, before the wedding party even got there. Half the people had no shrimp or cheese at all, and they would not refill anything.
Also, one of the entrees, the chicken, was supposed to be stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella, but was filled with spinach, a much cheaper recipe.
Coffee time?? The cups were there, but never filled. This is the first wedding I've ever been to, where they never served coffee to anyone.
We got a few hundred dollars back for the coffee and chicken, but they adamantly refused to compensate us for the embarrassment of the cocktail hour. After admitting the mistakes, they then changed their story, saying the ham and cheese were minced into the chicken, and WE should have asked for the coffee.
Waitressing was lousy, the ceremony was very poorly planned, and their shuttle was twenty minutes late to the ceremony, (they actually tried to blame us for returning late). I've been treated much better at lesser quality hotels, whenever there was a problem.
Their hardball tactics and refusal to compensate us for the cocktail hour were cheap and very low class, and very unusual for a supposed fine resort. The Doubletree Grand Key Resort, is a Double Grand disgrace.

We would definately stay there again!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Doubletree over the week of Thanksgiving and we were both very pleased with the way the Hotel looked, the room service and the staff. Upon arriving we asked for an upgrade on a room, not expecting to get one and we were pleasantly surprised when we did. Our room was nice, with French doors opening up to pool area and yet still semi private. Our room was cleaned every day and trash emptied. The staff at the Bar (Jill) and consierge desk were nice and did the right thing when asked. The shuttle service is a nice bonus too. We were just about 15 minutes away from everything in downtown Keywest and they were on time going both ways! The only thing I would say they could improve is changing the last shuttle pickup from downtown to midnight vs. 11:00. For those of us who like the night life it was sometimes difficult to go home early. We could have paid for a cab but who wants to do that when there is a free shuttle offered by your hotel. I also agree with everyone else, in that they should NOT advertise the beach as an amenity. We didn't go for the beaches but they were nothing to write home about. The hotel however, was wonderful and we would recommend staying there to anyone and would go back ourselves.

a local perspective

As a 10 year resident of Key West, I have nothing but great things to say about the Grand Key!! They treat locals VERY well; friendly staff, great drinks at the pool bar, food and drink prices are actually on the low end of average for the area. NO-- I am NOT an employee!!

My friends and I go there specifically to use their pool, have lunch and just spend a great afternoon relaxing....I highly recommend the massages offered poolside in their cabanas....

I have brought friends and family visiting from out of town to the hotel, and they have been very impressed as well....

The Doubletree is Great!

Igot a great deal from priceline for this hotel, $74 @night, but when I read the reviews my wife and I got worried and tried to cancel. We could not, so we drove down for our first trip to the keys. Let me say from the start, our stay here was wonderful. The place is beautiful.
While our room overlooked a parking lot, who cares. We came on the vacation to enjoy Key West, not the view from our room. All these complaints from previous guests did not appear valid to us. We were not charged 6.50 for towels, nor one cent. Bed sheets are automatically changed prior to new guest arrivals, plus each third day during the stay, unless you leave the special card on the pillow, which means to change the sheet. Housekeeping did a great job, as well as concierges, Debbie and Barry, also Jill the patio bartender. The food was better than mediocre and almost all hotels charge a parking fee of approx.
$10. The desk personnel and bellhop were all great. The only minus which keeps me from giving this Hotel a "5" is their promotion of Smathers Beach, about a mile away as their beach. It is a terrible spot and unswimmable. While Key West is not noted for beaches, we did find Fort Zachary Taylor State Park as the only beach which is decent and we really enjoyed it there. Go on Sunday and swim while the man plays a great sax. You can change and eat there also. We highly reccomend this hotel and we will be going back. By the way, it is only about seven minutes down Truman to Duval St for a great time.

The best ever!

From the moment we decided to go to the Doubletree Resort we had to have several changes of date. , of which the resort bent over back wards to accommodate. Mark and Jay on the phone and Tim at the Resort when we arrived. Barry our consiair .. to the room service, Jill the Bartender..The grounds are beautiful and the 10.00 a day to park was worth every dime.. The restaurant's were wonderful.. The pool and and amenties were delightful.. The CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES TO DIE FOR..I would not give much for the Smathers beach but other wise this is a 5 star resort without a doubt.

Great Place for the Family

We had a family reunion at this resort. A total of 18 people with babies to adults. The staff was very helpful. The accomadation was great!! Very clean. Concierge was very helpful in makign bookings for various activites. When we decided to spend another day, they were able to accomodate us even though it was during the summer vacation.
Definately recommend this hotel to anyone.

Stay Elsewhere

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is the third time I have stayed at this hotel while vacationing in Key West with my wife, but it was the first time since the property was purchased by Doubletree - and the last.

We stayed for 4 nights over Labor Day weekend and just about packed up and left after the first night. Upon arriving, our room was not ready and although the hotel appeared to be almost 1/2 empty, the desk staff would only upgrade us to an available room for $79/night. After waiting for almost 3 hours, we were given a room which overlooks the parking lot and the adjacent construction of several condominiums. After discussing the problem with the hotel staff, we were given a room with a pool view and a balacony for the nightly rate of $149/night. Believe me - the room is certainly not worth that price.

The rooms themselves are nicely decorated but somewhat small and the carpets desparately need replaced. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator which is stocked with bottled water and canned soft drinks, but of course they are $2.50 each. The hotel food is mediocre at best but reasonably priced.

Like other reviewers, we had difficulty getting our room cleaned by 5:00 pm everyday - even after repeated calls to the front desk.
Housekeeping does a terrible job - and get this - I was charged $6.50 a day for extra towels. I have never heard of such a thing. The in-room movies did not work on our television, which is okay I guess since the hotel charges $12.99 per movie.

After discussing several problems with the hotel management, we were talked down to and they even suggested that we stay at another hotel on future visits.

This hotel charges for just about everything - including $10 a day just to park for vehicle. Do yourself a favor - look elsewhere when looking for a hotel during your stay in Key West.

Families, beware

This hotel is beautiful, and the rooms are roomy, clean and well kept. However, we were on a family vacation, and, being late August, most other patrons were honeymooners. Needless to say, some of the activity around the pool area was a little "dicey" for my teenage daughters to witness. We kept our swimming to the ocean after witnessing one particularly amourous afternoon. Funny, my husband didn't seem to mind the pool at all!

I guess we were spoiled having just come from Loews Miami Beach and Portofino Bay properties. While this hotel is certainly not in the same league it doesn't present itself as an economy hotel either and that's why we were so dissapointed with what we found here.

Our first room was filthy. There was a dirty diaper left on the balcony, the carpets were so stained and dirty looking we didn't even want to take our shoes off. The bathroom area had clumps of hair that had accumulated in the corners from previous guests, but worst of all were the hundreds small crawling insects that were everywhere. The front desk offered to "Spray" our room but that was about it. I requested another room which I received with no questions asked but I felt as though I shouldn't have had to ask for it.

Room two. Not much better but at least we didn't see any bugs. This is were the hotel redeemed itself, or at least tried. We weren't in our second room longer than 5 minutes when the phone rang. It was the front desk offering us an upgraded room for our troubles and coupons for a complimentary breakfast buffet for the four of us.

Room three (this is all in the same evening in case you're wondering).
A nice room that was slightly larger with a small seating area and a larger balcony overlooking the pool front and center. Again, hair all over the bathroom area and the room smelled as though someone had been smoking but the carpet appeared cleaner and there were no bugs (they were crawling on the walls in the hall instead). By this time we were exhausted and just accepted the room.

Our rooms were not cleaned until late afternoon or evening in most cases. This was a problem on a few occasions when after a hot day in town we came back to shower before dinner and found that our room had not been touched, even at 4:30 PM! When they did finally come I don't think they did anything more than make the beds and replace the towels.
We had to leave a note asking them to take dirty wine glasses or they would have stayed for the duration.

A trip to the on site laundry room to wash a few things revealed a foul stench that was eminating from a trash can that apparently hadn't been removed in quite some time. I pulled the trash can out into the hall hoping one of the staff would empty it. Eventually they did.

A few nights into our stay the shower clogged for no apparent reason. A maintenance person was promptly dispatched and after a whole lot of plunging and snaking the shower drain the problem was resolved but the shower was now so dirty from all this activity we had to resort to scrubbing it ourselves at 11 PM. Our kids wanted to use the WebTV feature they have in the rooms to e-mail their friends, unfortunately the keyboard didn't work and again a maintenance person promptly arrived. Apparently the batteries needed to be replaced.

The beach (Smathers) that they promote and offer transportation to was so foul smelling and dirty that after five minutes we packed up and left. I can't imagine why they would want to tout this an amenity.
Every time we drove by the beach appeared to be empty....I wonder why?

On a brighter note, the pool area was nice with plenty of towels and chairs. The outdoor bar was a nice feature but did not offer poolside service. The breakfast buffet was also very good and resonably priced compared to some hotels. We did not eat dinner here. The shuttle into town was very convenient and even though we had our own car we frequently used it just to avoid having to drive around looking for a parking space. In spite of all the problems, throughout our 5 night stay the staff was always pleasant and eager to please but unfortunately this hotel just didn't cut it for us. The next time we're in Key West we'll be staying somewhere else. I wanted to give this 1.5 stars but I couldn't so I gave then the benefit of the doubt and gave this hotel a two.

Big time screw up

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had booked at room with a spa tub over a month in advance for an
upcoming anniversary celebration for Memorial Day Weekend. I even
called the night before to confirm. When we arrived, we were told the
room was unavailible. The person at the desk would have left it at that
if I hadn't complained!!! The manager came out, had no good explanation
why our room was unavailible (said someone had unblocked my reservation
and gave our room to someone the night before) and was only able to
give us a regular non-smoking room *when we had requested smoking*.
They tried to say that room had a good view....(yeah, OF THE PARKING
LOT - the beach was past that and the street!!!!!) I was still very mad
- was really looking forward to a spa tub for 2!! Being the fact that
every other hotel was booked, he gave us one night free and said he
would send champagne to our room and that we could have free breakfast.
(we're not breakfast eaters unfortunately) After a few hours without
getting the champagne, I called down and asked about it and was told
they were very busy by someone with an attitude. We never got the
champagne and I never pursued it after that. Walking past the front
desk we didn't even get a smile any time we walked by. Bartender by the
pool was very nice, shuttle was good too. Nintendo game don't tell you
how long you've been using it, so we were charged for 2 hrs when we
thought we turned it off within the 1st hr.
Room was pretty and clean, but not what we had asked for, and we wouldn't have bothered staying in a resort type hotel since we weren't there to use the pool/beach, etc, as we would have had the same style room at any other hotel at a much cheaper price.

Must say, their cookies are some of the best I've ever eaten! We were
also told if we came back, they'd take care oif us, whatever that
means, since they didn't bother to while we were there. I would have
much rather pay for all the nights for the more expensive room we had
asked for (they even insulted us by trying to appeal to us that the
only room availible was was cheaper - which, if I had wanted cheaper, I
would have BOOKED cheaper) than get 1 night free. This hotel really put
a damper on our vacation.

A lot of problems

from A TripAdvisor Member
We reserved a two bedroom suite and confirmed the reservation two days prior to arrival. Upon arrival we were told that they did not have our reservation but they could give us into one room for the first night then they could give us the two room suite the following night. We were give chocolate chip cookies for the mix up. The rooms were very nice and clean but housekeeping will not clean your room or change the sheets. They will only make the bed. The bathrooms were ignored and the trash cans were never emptied. We ordered a movie but the movie did not come on but the charge was added on to the bill. The attempted to check us out two days early and blocked out our card keys so we could not enter the room. Once that was straightened out they again gave us cookies for the mix up. When we checked out the hotel charged us triple for one of the rooms on the first night. The hotel manager apologized and said that all the Hiltons, nationwide were having computer problems. Overall the hotel was very nice except for the computer problem and the LAZY staff in housekeeping! RJ
