Wonderful Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Banana Bay was delightful. The staff was great. We arrived before our room was ready and they took our bags for us, gave us a place to change and freshen up from the plane ride, and gave us directions to a nice little restaurant downtown to go to until our room was ready. We rented bicycles from across the street, and I highly recommend you do the same. It makes the entire island very accessible. Via bicycle you can be downtown in about 10 minutes. The room was wonderful. Nice view of the pool and the part of the bay. Clean, comfortable, and roomy. Very reasonable. Convenient continental breakfast every morning by the pool. We will be going back, very, very soon!

Very Secluded

I have to say, I've visited Banana Bay twice and we're planning a third trip again this August for Lobster Fest!!! The best part about this place is that you can enjoy each other in this secluded waterfront hotel. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, this is it! We watched the sunset over the waterfront while laid back on a hammock. Not like the other busy hotels in key west, you can enjoy the beauty without encountering too many visitors along the way. The rooms were well appointed with canopy beds and a private balcony. Since it is an adult only property, we were able to sit in the jacuzzi (alone!!!) under the beautiful stars. I love the place and can't wait to get back.

Great deal for the money--We loved it!

We stayed at the Banana Bay for our honeymoon almost 3 years ago. It was all-around fantastic. I agree with the person that said they were disappointed by the front office. I was a little nervous when I saw that--its little more that a trailer on the side of the highway. My fears were relived the moment we stepped beyond it. The landscaping was lush and beautiful. The rooms were clean and big. The pool and the jacuzzi were so quiet and relaxing. The breakfasts were great. It was a little farther away from downtown than we would have like but the shuttle service was very reliable and a great way to see the whole island. To the people that are complaining - maybe they should have shelled out twice as much money and stayed at the Wyndham--They would probably find plusher bathrobes and a better view, but not much more. Banana Bay offered us a great package deal and we got exactly what we paid for. I wish I were there right now!

Some people are never happy

We stayed here as a party of 6 in November 2002. Loved it. Got married at sunset then off to the Hilton for a beautiful meal (arranged by the the wedding planner).

If you walk out of the grounds there is a bus stop that allows you to buy a ticket to travel the island getting on and off as many times as you like.

For the person who says the pool was tiny, were you expecting an olympic sized pool?

Could not of asked for more

Had a great time!

My husband and I were married at Banana Bay in Key West, March 6, 2004.
Jean married us at sunset...she's such a sweet lady. Dave took care of everything, my flowers were exactly what I ask for, every one complements the beautiful bougainvilleas in out wedding pictures...the photographer did a beautiful job. If you want a stress-free wedding, this is the way to go, but if you want all the "fuss" don't get married here. When we first arrived, we went to the tiki bar and the bartender told us some great places to eat and even gave us coupons. We took his advice and the food was wonderful! After visting Duval street at night, we were glad that Banana Bay was away from the "night life" and secluded. Yet it was close enough that a taxi could have us there in 5 minutes. Our room was clean and we liked the guest robes that were available for us to use. Our sunset cruise was beautiful and fun. I hope to return one year for our anniversary.

more of a motel on a major road

from A TripAdvisor Member
I picked this hotel because of the good ratings others had given it on this website. Wish I hadn't.

I should have listened more to the "Are you kidding me", review on TripAdvisor, as I agree totally with them, having just returned from the place. March 10-13 2004 Ditto, don't be fooled by the website. Guy who checked me in couldn't care less that we had been allocated rooms overlooking the car park rather than overlooking the pool as we'd requested. Note, only about 8 rooms actually overlook the pool area, all the others overlook the car park - Everything about the place was stuck in the 70's - it needs major re-vamp.

Location was bad- 2 miles on the main road into Key West - courtesy bus (as stated on website -small fee) is $7 for the whole day, but it's really not a convenient way to travel, so to get anywhere we had to walk or get a $12 cab into the centre. If you multiply the number of cabs we took, we could have afforded a much nicer hotel.

Pool was freezing and tiny. The wedding gazeebo looked miserable, I really wonuldn't recommend anyone to get married there, without going to the place to check it out first, it would be such a let down just to turn up there for a wedding.

It was far from the tropical hideaway it makes out to be, but more of a motel on a main road with a pool. I was really disappointed. We would have gone somewhere else, but we had a 7 day cancellation charge we would have had to pay. Won't be back...

Peaceful Tropical Setting!

We stayed here from Feb 29 until March 4, 2004.

We got in late Sunday evening around 8pm. At first I was a little disappointed when I seen the small office in front for check-in. After we went around the back we were pleasantly surprised to see beautiful flowers and tropical palm trees, all with uplighting! We also liked our King sized bed with mesh canopy!! Very romantic. Also was one of the few places in Key West that had a small frig. in the room. We stocked ours with snacks & drinks.

The Bannan Bay resort is located on the water so you have a small beach with hammocks, very secluded and private. We stayed on the second floor and had a partial view of bay. They also have a cattermaran that gives evening sunset cruises! We did that our last day. Check there web site because they offer special packages with that.

The location is about 1 mile from downtown. We were glad we booked here, because we could get a way from all the noise and activity of downtown when we wanted too. You can leave your car here and buy a ticket from front office for the shuttle to downtown. Only 7.00 a day to go back and forth until 11pm at night. Take the red bus back for a direct route from downtown. They drop you off across the street at Fairfield Inn. Going to downtown, you just stand in front of Bannana Bay and they pick you up. It only takes 5 minutes to get to down town.

Also next door a place rented jet ski's or waverunners and bikes. We didn't get a chance to do that. Overall for a great place at a good price I think this is it. We looked at other very expensive options for downtown and are glad we picked this one instead.

On our last night there, we met a nice couple from England, they went on the sunset cruise with us. Oh, I forgot my charger for my cell phone. Did not notice until we had driven to Orlando! At our room there, I called and they said no problem, what room were you in and I told them. They said it happens all the time. They said they would mail it to my address at home. We flew home that evening March 5,2004 and by the following Tuesday it had arrived in my mail box!! Very nice of them! Normally people only post info if they had a bad experience, but I thought I should post this to let people know we had a good one! Also they had a computer in there lobby that you can use for free to get onto the internet to check your e-mail or whatever! No charge!! PS: If you go to Key West our highlight of the trip was the Sea Plane Tours! Absolutely worth the money 180.00 per person. An experience of a lifetime. Hope this info helps. Take care and have fun!!

Spend your money somewhere else

My travel agent also suggested this place, I too am looking for a new travel agent. The staff was incompetent and rude. When checking in, you have to give $100 deposit, if you are inclined to steal used robes you don't get the deposit back. My deposit wasn't returned. Assuming it was just a mistake since they seemed to make alot of them - I called to clear it up. I was told too bad, the maid said the robes where gone. I assured him they were left in the room. No way would I loose $100 deposit for paper thin used robes - the desk clerk said "I think you are protesting too much". After spening hundreds of dollars to stay in there hotel, instead of an apology - I get accused of stealing!!! Also - the door lock didn' work and had to be replaced - taking up 2 hours of our time, the rooms were dirty and the staff couldn't even give directions. The whole island is only 4 miles!!!

Nice Stay, But Not A Resort!

from Mom542
My husband and I celebrated our 25 anniversary and visited Key West. We stayed at the Banana Bay Resort in March, 2003. The word Resort can be misleading. One might expect a true "Resort". Banana Bay is not a "Resort" by my definition. However, It was quiet (all adults). Although on the main drag the rooms were rather secluded. The pool was great, but bring your own beach towels! Their private beach was beautiful, although small and you cannot swim. Actually, Key West was built on coral and beach sand had to be imported. So, if you are looking for relaxing, beautiful beach time, don't visit Key West. The Key West culture is laid back and relaxing, but the beaches aren't the nicest!
The breakfast was okay and the Tiki Bar drinks were great, but a little pricey! Although the bartender gave us our first drink on the house, which I thought was very generous! The bed, although nice looking was a tad bit stiff. But all in all, it was a nice, quiet relaxing stay. Just not a "Resort". Tip: Don't bother renting a car unless you want to go off the island! The Banana Bay resort is right on the Trolley line. You can by a three day pass and ride all you want at a reasonable price!
And the trolleys run well into the evening!

bring your own Towels

from wonderms
Picked this hotel due to all the positive ratings. As we approached the motel, I thought initially we won't stay a night. We had an upgraded room overlooking the pool. The room was very nice, with tropical furniture and a canopy bed. But, the towel situation really made our visit uncomfortable. Either we had no hand towels, or two very, very thin bath towels- like Motel 6 (although I have never stayed there.) Had to go to the office and ask for more towels every day. never saw a decent towels there. They really doled out these junky towels like gold. Breakfast was ok, not great, very nice area for eating, and nice hammock on the water. Lots of tree maintance going on while we were there the beginning of Dec, probably getting ready for season.
location, not walkable to downtown- far.

Top Local Tips for Key West

Transportation by scooter or bicycle with free delivery! Reserve in advance! The easiest way to get around is by renting a bicycle or a scooter. Reserving them directly through the rental company is wiise; & it's easier for you & for the delivery company! There's lots of free parking marked "scooter" or "bike" parking, & you'll enjoy the small island convenience on a bike or a scooter. Helmets are not required, but are recommended.

Great Bars Be sure to visit The Green Parrot, Hogs Breath Saloon & Sloppy Joes

Rental cars in Key West: To rent or not to rent... That is the question. Do you really need one? Not necessarily. We rented a convertible, which was fun if you want to have that experience at least once. I live in the colder notheast, so this was something I always wanted to do anyway. But, the island is small & there is an abundance of moped/scooter rentals (totally cool & fun AND the truest way to experience Key West!). Also, many taxi services if you need to go far. Keep in mind that once you hit Old Town, everything is within walking distance. Parking a car is a bit of an issue - There are very few free parking spots on the street & parking garages can get expensive. Approx $15-$20 a day. They also fill up fast. We stayed at a place somewhat removed from the busy part of town, so a rental car was (sort of) needed, but a taxi could have done the job, too. If you want to explore other keys, you'll need a car (naturally). But if you're going to stick close to Old Town and the main-hub-bub of the island, you can get by just fine without a rental car.
