t have picked a better place to stay in Key West!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed in the Honeymoon Cottage at the Avalon B&B and couldn't have been more pleased! The room was beautiful and spacious, not to mention clean and private.

The location of the Avalon is ideal, on the quiet end of Duval Street and close to the ocean. The room was also very reasonably priced and Yvonne was very helpful and friendly.

The Avalon is a wonderful place to stay and I would recommend it to anybody!

The Avalon is home away from home

My husband and I stayed at the Avalon while we were married in Key West. Yvonne and Caroline were so friendly and accomdating - we could not have picked a better place to stay. Our room was beautiful and well equipped. The pool was the perfect place to relax and spend time with friends. They even provided popsicles to our daughters during the day. And the "welcoming committee" Music and Tigger (cats) were friendly also.

We definitely recommend the Avalon to our friends and family.

One word - Great!

Me and my girlfriend stayed at this charming B&B located on the main street in Key West. We are from England and have been to other parts of the USA, mainly on short city breaks in the likes of New York and Washington.

The Avalon B&B was a refreshing change and we were greeted by friendly staff and a really welcoming atmosphere. We found the rooms a nice size, and they were both clean and comfortable.

The hotel is located at the quieter end of Duval street but still well within reach of the bars and nightlife which was good for us, both being in our early 30s, and gave us the best of both worlds.

We would definitely come back to the Avalon when visiting Key West again.

Excellent Place To Stay

from Gibgang
I've just returned from a vacation in Florida with my wife. This time we decided to spend a few days in Key West instead of doing the whole two weeks in Orlando. We'd settled on the Avalon B&B because a colleague at work had recommended it but I must confess that I was a little aprehensive when I stumbled across some of the reviews on this site just before we left the UK.

I'm not usually disposed to write reviews like this but felt that I had to in this case. Our stay was wonderful! The room, although not the largest I'd ever stayed in, was more than adequate and we found the staff to to be friendly and helpful. The location was excellent, being in the quiet end of Duval St and within easy reach of all the main highlights of Key West (a fantastic place to visit).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Avalon to others.

Disappointed with the small room

from Vic-toria
I stayed here a few months back now. It's quite a charming house, well run, reasonably friendly staff and great location (near enough but not too near the lively scene). It's not the best kept B&B but it's average.

My one complaint would be that I had purposely booked a large room and had it confirmed, yet on arrival (in a completely full season) we were given a small room; the kind of room where you have to sit on the bed as there's nowhere else to sit or put anything. This bugged me during my stay especially when I saw the fire escape plan and realised for certain that there were far larger rooms than ours. And let's face it, I had paid top whack for this room at the height of the xmas season. Additionally the room had a damp smell to it.

I am usually one to complain but I knew the hotel was full and I knew I'd have to have a big argument with the management and that in itself would have ruined my holiday so I let it go.

I would say that if you can be sure to get a large room, this would be a perfectly good B&B but if you have to stay in a small cramped room, I don't think it's worth it.

Overall, there are not many reasons why I'd come back to the Avalon. The pool is extremely small and mostly shaded, the staff wasn't helpful or friendly, the rooms are nothing more than decent, and it's quite a walk to the nightlife.

charming property, great location

I just returned from a stay at the Avalon Bed and Breakfast in Key West. The location is great --right on Duval but at the quiet southern end. Easy walking to everything-my boyfriend and I didn't rent a car and had a great time. I stayed in room 22 and it was lovely--moquito nets over the beds, darling furniture, seperate small desk/lighted makeup area and small refridge. It was spacious and pelnty of closet space and room for a roll away if needed. The only I didn't care for was the toiletries--I really felt at this price they could have provided some nicer products-this was a single cheap shampoo and a cheap soap--maybe okay in the off season but in high season they should buy some nice stuff. They also need new TV's--13" ones just don't cut it in this day and age. The breakfast is adequate, but they really should mix it up just a bit--we had the same thing day after day--and I means the same exact thing-same fruit same pastry, same cereal. I walked over to the Dewey House/La mer to check it out and they had a much nicer spread--but it is also more $$$ per night. I ate at Old Town Mexican Cafe and would recommend it. Ate at Duffy's and would pass-what a tourist trap-very overpriced for what you get. Crabby Bill's was great for the 1.99 oysters and the bartenders are wonderful. Not to be missed is A and B Lobster House. This is one of the best seafood places I have ever been to. Spendy but worth every penny.

Avalon is on Duval which makes it very handy for walking to the nightlife. It's also at the quieter end which makes it good for people with kids. Next door to a terrific beach bar with above average beach bar food is great for sitting and having a bite or pint while the kids play in the sand. Butterfly conservatory across the road is enchanting. Yvonne is a charming and very pleasant hostess. Breakfast on the veranda very good. Two cute cats live at the house. Pool is more of a bathtub but, again, fine for kids. Our room was very nice, if a bit lacking for storage, with canopy beds and clean bathroom. I usually prefer to explore new places when I holiday but in this case, I'll definitely be back.

The best vacation EVER

from LoveTraveling57_58
This was our first stay at a bed and breakfast guest house so needless to say, we were a little "nervous" what to expect. The "innkeepers," Yvonne and Doug were helpful, friendly and knowledgable about anything we needed to know. The inn was comfortable, quiet and very clean. Breakfast was served every morning on the large front porch and we really enjoyed both the food and atmosphere. If you're looking for a quiet, clean charming place this is for you. Also a great location on the southern end of Duval Street. We highly recommend it!!

My husband and I spent the weekend (Feb, 2005) at Avalon and the location is great. It is close to a nice, small beach, it has plenty of really good resturants within walking distance and free parking (on-street). The best part of the B&B is its rooms. They are clean, cozy and nicely but not overly done. And our room smelled great!

We rate this B&B as average primarily for three reasons. First, the breakfast contains all store bought items. From the pastry (which there was only one choice and it was not very tasty) to the bagels (which had to be of the frozen variety). B&Bs tend to have tasty breakfasts, whether continental or full. This B&B falls far short. Second, the staff, while also nice in their response to questions, were not especially friendly or helpful. Lastly, if you want a nice sunny pool area, this is not the place. The pool is small and well maintained, but is covered by so many trees, it is difficult for sun to seep through.

Would we stay here again? Perhaps. But not before checking out other B&Bs.

Top Local Tips for Key West

Cheaper than Joe's After a lot of Stone Crab claws at Monty's at sunset, we enjoyed a quiet nap before to walk along Duval St. This place has a lot of charming, remaining of an far era when like was more simple.

stay away from duval (at night) Key west- STAY AWAY!!

Good thoughts Stay close to where you want to be. There were taxis and rental cars, but those driving probably missed all the good things to see worrying about where to park, where to turn, etc.
