Historical Traveller Reviews of Artist House Hotel

Great room and location!

from LondoninMarch
my friend and i last minute travelled to key west and luckily got a room on thanksgiving weekend at the Artist House. it's a beautiful house on eaton st, really near all the action on duval st. the manager, suzanne, was really nice, the room (sun room) was quaint and clean, equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave, and the breakfast was nice. the backyard has a beautiful old-styled jacuzzi. the price was right (120 per night) and there's parking for 12 per day. highly recommended!!

Fun Time at the Artist House

This was our first stay at the Artist House. We chose the least expensive of the six rooms that they have (Sun Room). It was a nice, clean room with a refrigerator and microwave but it was a little small. The bathroom was especially small with very little room to put any of our toiletries. You enter the room through the main house, walk through the house, out the kitchen door, around the back of the property and up a narrow stair case which proves challenging with a big suitcase. It was a nice touch to find a bag of key lime cookies and candy on the bed to welcome us as well as a homemade flower made out of palm fronds. The location was perfect, just a little more than one block from Duval Street and very close to Mallory Square. The staff was especially nice and helpful. What they call a pool is more an oversized hot tub but not heated until December. It would have been nice to have it heated even in November as it was too cold to enjoy early in the month. The breakfast provided was very good. Fresh fruit all day and a wide variety of breakfast food and juices. We would definitely stay here again.

Completely Gone Downhill

We had stayed at The Artist House under the former owners. We had such a wonderful time our dream was to return someday. However, when we got there the second time around, the house was no longer what it used to be. It smelled moldy and was depressing. The cat who had been so amazing and so popular with former guests had been 'let go', undoubtedly blamed for the bad odors.
The new owners should just forget about operating a B & B. Convert the house to condos and get it over with already.

Charm Plus History

Life changes and so it seems do peoples impressions of great places to spend a week in paradise The new owners have really fixed up the place. 2006 brings fresh paint, lush gardens, new linens and friendly and helpful service to this ideally located historic home. [Yes, some of the previous art is gone; as the former owners took their collections with them -- but many new pieces by local artists are also on the walls of The Artist House.] I have already booked for this summer, late fall and New Years!

An Historical Experience

Excellent service in a historical setting. Convenient for walking and shopping. A truly beautiful room with amenities. A beautiful garden in which to enjoy breakfast and a spa to soak away the day's travels. A great experience.

Not what I expected..but better

well... I planned my third trip to Key West back in march and saw this place. At first I was unsure because of all the reviews. When I stepped in, I forgot about all those things others said. The house smells just like any other old house would is simply something that comes with it being an old house but my room smelled wonderful. The operators and staff were really nice and helped us out with getting our boarding passes online and told us great places to go and eat and whatnot. A+ STAFF. The office does close at 4 and they do go to lunch around if anyone has had problems with understnading that only 4 people work in the house two of which are owners of which is the maid and the other does just about everything they have to have lunch sometime. But we never had a problem catching someone if we needed something during the day.

At night, all the doors are can still leave and come back and use your room key to unlock the front door. You feel really secure and safe.

As far as the water pressure...yea its a little bad. But the reason behind that is that all of Key West tries to save as much water as possible...its the same in cali. The shower heads make sure that not to much water is used. Just about every place in key west uses that.

The great thing about this guesthouse is you feel as if you are the only one there. I never heard anyone stomping around or talking loud or blaring a tv. I would def. recommend sating in the Anne Suite.....its very very nice. I would def. come back and stay in this guesthouse.

Very poor experience

I visited Key West for the first time in March 2005. I saw a lovely room on the Artist House web site and was excited to stay there. I arrived late in the evening and and when I opened the door to the house, my key, too had been left in the mailbox, I was struck with the musty odor of old house and "eau de cat". Luckily, my room didn't have that odor, but it certainly didn't look much like the web site. The room itself was large and structurally very nice, but it wasn't nicely decorated and seemed neglected and run down. The bed, however, was very comfortable. Dresser missing drawer pulls, 40 watt bulb in the lamp, shades that couldn't be raised. The worst, however, was the shower. The manager suggested that it was the water pressure, but the sink pressure was fine. I think it was the shower head itself, which would be simple enough (if anyone cared enough to bother) to fix. There was barely enough water to wash. I left after half my stay and would never consider going back.

New Owners Let The Place Go!!

This was my favorite place in Key West until it was sold. The art is gone its not as clean and all they talk about is the new guys wanting to go condo . Too bad this place is in a great location and used to be alot of fun....

My husband & I recently stayed at the Artist House B & B on January 4, 2005 & our experience was extremely unsatisfactory. Upon setting foot through the gate & onto the property, it smelled of mold & must. When we arrived at 7:00pm we were told that no one would be there to greet us & help us with check-in & that we were to find the key to our room in the mailbox at the side of the house. That was very fishy. 7:00pm & no one would be around?? In our past experience most places of this nature had people around until at least 10:00 pm to help their guests get settled, especially if they've never been to the town in question before & after a lengthy (six hour in our case) flight. Where was the hospitality??

After about twenty minutes of trying to figure out how to even get to
our room, which we were told was at the back of the house, we weren't
told that we had to go through the house to get there, we found that
the room smelled hideously of mold, dust & must. The carpet, floor &
shower were dirty & our feet & socks turned brown when we walked around with our shoes
off. The bed & linens were bad as well. The linens were ragged & stained, the
bed was horribly saggy & did not offer a good night's sleep. It seemed
as though it was a throw away that someone saved from the dumpster. My
husband & I both woke up with very painful backaches the following

When we were ready to check-out on January 5th at 11:00 am, again no
one was around to help us do that. We had no choice but to leave the
key at the desk in the hallway. There was no office to speak of.

We would never recommend this place to anyone. It was that worst
experience ever in our twenty plus years of traveling. The owners
should be ashamed & we want our money back please.

I Think the best of key West

from tincup
This place is in the best area of town, Just park you car and walk to everthing. I mean walk if you can get youself away from the pool.
Always great people at the artist house villas..

Top Local Tips for Key West

Parking If you're going to have a vehicle in Key West, make sure you stay somewhere with PARKING! Not "limited off-street parking" or "on-street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. "

Key West attractions. Key West is a very casual town. Leave the fancy clothes at home...shorts, sandals and t-shirts are very appropriate attire for the activities of the town.
