not what we expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
2/6/04 - 2/8/04. We just came back from our week long trip in Florida.
Starting with Miami beach and then to Key Largo(@ the Westin) and then onto Key West. The moment you drive up to the entrance of the Westin you are relieved since our drive through Key Largo seemed depressed.
You are still relieved when you drive up to the drop off. We were greeted by a nice fellow who was very helpful. He took our bags and brought us up to our room. Ok! Ok! so far it sounds good but when we got to our room our supposed "bay view" on the 3rd floor - it was obstructed by a structural wall. hmmm 1/2 bay view? well we called down to the desk to see if we could get another room yet she explained that the hotel was completely booked. Funny - we didn't see but a few people around far. The room had a weird smell to it too - kind of musty. The bed was comfy though. The bathroom area was ok. Outside the hotel rooms - it needs help! - it's dark and uninviting. I kept on saying - Darth Vator Hotel. We decided to head to the bar for a drink - maybe people will be there?!? We had a drink and there were two other couples at the bar - a twosome band was playing. Every time people would look like they were going to come in the wouldn't! We were joking to our selves - come on! come in! we need some more life in here! it's like a cemetary here!! We also asked the bartender if the hotel was full - she said yes. Oh well. Anyway, I don't like to be negative we tried to make the best of our vacation - but for the money @ $239 + restort fees - the place needs a make over! Fast. The whole place is just - off. The beach is small w/ plastic lounge chairs - nothing special. The tiki bar is not very inviting either. When we checked out I mentioned to the desk gal that the hotel could use a face lift and she said the hotel is going back to another name hotel next year (I thought to myself when I looked at the brochures in the lobby last night of other Westins in the world this one does not come close). She said they have a budget of $2million for renovations next year. It needs it. For now I would say skip The Westin and Key Largo all together.

Nice couple of days

We stayed at the Westin for 3 days / 2 nights. The room was clean; the buffet breakfasts were fantastic, Trevor was very knowledgeable in helping us make some decisions about planning our activities. Betty at the front desk was great. Her customer service skills were tremendous.
The Water Sports Staff - Diana and Stephanie - helped prepare us for a Hobie Cat sailing trip and a Para-sailing adventure! The nature walk was also a nice feature. While in the area, we would strongly recommend eating dinner at Bentley's a few miles south on Route 1. We did not have reservations at the Westin; we took advantage of discounts advertised in local travel brochures.

Uneven quality

We stayed at the Westin in Key Largo between the 7th and 10th of February and want to share a couple of things. We made our reservations through Travel Web, a site jointly run by its parent Starwood and a number of other hotel chains. As repeat visitors and ?Starwood Preferred? members we had expected an upgrade as (a) the hotel was far from full and (b) Starwood Preferred members are advised that this is their policy when you sign up. The clerk at the registration desk almost immediately told us that we would not be getting an upgrade as the hotel was full (not true) and our reservation had not been made through Starwood. It seems that Westin staff are unaware that the company they work for has a travel site called Travel Web so beware as even a call to the manager on site did not resolve this. Eventually, with an admonition to book through their 1-800 number ?next time? (I don?t think so) we were ?upgraded? to a room with a front door that had a nonfunctional lock, wires hanging from the armoire where the TV set should have been and an overpowering smell of an ammonia based cleaner. Fortunately, we had not yet unpacked our car and dragged our bags up. So back to the lobby we went where the clerk apologized for giving us a room that was being ?worked on? and upgraded us once more to a 3rd floor ocean view room with a safe that didn?t work, closet doors that didn?t slide, and more seriously, balcony railings that were loose and balcony lights that remained dark at night ? an inexcusable safety hazard in a hotel that markets itself to families. The public areas of the Westin remain well cared for but their rooms are sorely in need of attention. Furthermore, the rooms appear to be inconsistently appointed, with, for example, standard amenities like a small refrigerator lacking in rooms that cost upwards of $250 a night. Our advice ? if you do decide to stay at the Westin ? is that you inspect your room thoroughly before unpacking because no one on the staff at the hotel appears to be doing so.

Westin Woes

My wife (fiance at the time) stayed here for a romantic weekend getaway. I like the hotel. . .the rooms aren't great but the pool is fun and the beach area is good as well. Not great, but good.

However, let me get back to the rooms. The walls are PAPER THIN. We could hear the couple next door partying (among other things) until 5 am. This started around 2 am. We called to the front desk to complain (believe me, I have never done this before) which prompted the hotel desk to have security tell the couple next door that WE had called to complain. This then prompted the couple to start banging on the wall letting us know they wanted to kill us, literally. NICE.

We left at 6 am after the couple next door passed out because we couldn't take it anymore. My fiance was scared. I had booked the room with Starwood points and when I told the front desk why I was leaving, they stated there was nothing they could do. In my eyes, the front desk and management had done enough to scare my fiance and I out of there.

I wrote to Starwood (Westin) to let them know what had happened. In Starwood's defense, they did give me back my points. The question still remains though: If you do have an issue with a guest (or other issue), is it worth it to stay at this hotel to put yourself and family in danger?

Average Emenities

July 2003- average hotel accomidations. I did like the fact that there were numberous restaurants and lounges in the Westin. The beach was small and water sports were expensive. This time of year is the rainy season so we did not see too much sun. Being from Daytona, I was unimpressed with the hotel and the overall obiance of the keys.

Lovely Accommodations

I spent Columbus weekend at the Westin with my Mom and we thoroughly enjoyes it. The grounds were lovely, tropical and quiet. The beach was indeed small, but the Keys are not known for large, sandy beaches. It was fine for swimming and all the dive and recreation spots were a quick drive away. Our room was wonderful well-appointed with a lovely view of the Bay. The open-air hotel had a Caribbean atmosphere, laid-back and breezy. We had one incident during happy hour where the bartender didn't want to give us our "two-for-one" drinks (she claimed we each had to have two drinks and we wanted one of our two drinks complimentary), but we were given a late check-out and otherwise enjoyed our stay.

Super hotel

My wife and I spent a weekend here at the end of October and had a super time. The hotel itself is not particularly beautiful but it has a great range of facilities and the staff are friendly. Not much of a beach but there is a separate pool are with a decent cafe for lunch.
The rooms are very nice and most seem to have a balcony, though some rooms on the lower floors don't get a view due to the large number of trees on the property. The restuarants on the property are very good.

Going back next year.

Had 5 nights at The Westin in October of this year and am planning the next visit already. Rate the hotel as a good 3 star, almost 4. Not usual Westin standard but OK.The staff gave some of the best service that I've experienced in the USA. Food was good and not expensive, breakfast overlooking the bay was a great start to the day. Plenty to do without leaving the hotel, small beach ( it has one, most hotels in the keys don't) where you can arrange trips to the reef, Jetski and kayak hire, parascending and snorkel hire. Or you can fish from the pier. While we were there we swam with Manatees on a couple of days, they just appeared about 20 feet out from the beach, another day had small sharks around our feet. AWESOME! In the hotel, small gym, bar with pool table and nightly entertainment. Didn't use the 2 pools, didn't need to with all that the beach offered. Expect a 3* and you'll be pleased, expect 5* and you'll be disappointed.

Awesome awesome awesome

Need I say more. Im from Miami so im only 50 miles from Key Largo but have never been to the Keys before. We were planning a trip to Key Largo to go fishing and everyone kept telling us to stay at the Westin because it was nice compared to the other places.. ("rat trap was an accurate description for the other hotels you pass getting to the westin").. service was impaccable at the westin and the room was nice..you have to go to Robbie's in Islamorada for party boat charter, oh yeah stay away from the overpriced restaurant called Ziggies, of course this is just my personal opinion but we went there and i ordered a fried shrimp dinner and when it came out, it was merely 8 fried shrimp on a bed of fries and cost 18.95.. we also ordred the crab cakes for 17.00 and it was 3 of them, also with fries and takes like mushy baby food, definitely frozen and thawed..ewww the horror just thinking about it.. other than that please try the treetops restaurant at the hotel it as nice and there was a live piano player who came around and took requests.. i also liked the parrot bar which also had live music not quite band status, it was a sax player who alternated on the flute and a guitar player and they both alternated leading songs, it was nice though... all of the food was a bit overpriced (actually not when compared to the other local eateries) and they automatically add gratuities to the bill so it wasnt hard for the room charges to add up.. the poolside massage was nice, it was right under the waterful so kinda blissful... had a catch of the day sandwich and a drink (frozen) at the poolside restaurant and paid 17.00 including gratuity and it was delicous and the drink was on point.. also if you like frozen drinks, the best drink I ever had in my life was called "Island Paradise" at the Parrot Bar was excellent and a definite must try.. To sum it all up, the staff was great, the hotel was nice and the only downside is the beach which there wasnt much of due to the coral, but the cool thing was that you can snorkel right on the beach but i didnt want to because i didnt like having the fish swim right next to me, it was weird.. also there was a lot of condensation in the lobby and the room.. oh yeah we are just getting back and they said it was the slow season so they were able to upgrade our room at no cost..we really enjoyed our stay though..oh yeah and we caught snapper and some small barracuda off the pier at the resort and they cooked it at treetops for us... we have beautiful pictures..please feel free to email..

Big, but nice
