Good hotel for a meeting

from ysuindy
Attended a business meeting at the Omni in mid-June and spent two nights. The meeting facilities were excellent. Maybe the best I have been at. The microphone system was great for a large roundtable discussion. Food provided for lunch both days was top notch. The second floor where the meeting rooms are located was somewhat dated, but the inside of the rooms was fine. Meeting rooms were very quiet. There was a loud, large meeting next to ours. When in the hallway we could hear them, but in our meeting room we could not.

I had a corner room with a king bed. Room was large with a couch. As others have noted the large TV in front of the big picture window is somewhat a turnoff. In the corner room the TV is to the side of the bed, somewhat harder to watch from bed. The rooms were dark. I had to turn all the lights on and it still seemed dark. The shower area in the bathroom had no lights. Only four lights above the mirror to light the room. I like bright bathrooms, so this was a turnoff. Did hear some noise in the hallway at night. Had a hard time cooling off the room at night.

On the plus side, the bed and pillows were comfortable. Plenty of extra pillows and some very heavy comforters. The desk was large, ample electrical outlets and dataport for my laptop. Maid service was prompt. Staff I dealt with was friendly.

Parking is on the top floors of the adjacent garage. The hotel charges $14 per night and you get in and out privileges. If you simply pay with the ticket the maximum daily charge is $10 per night. If you are not going to leave or are only staying one night, pay the $10.

I did not feel unsafe in the hotel area, although we were in a large group both nights when we went out.

Luxurios room and nice people

from A TripAdvisor Member
I grew up in Jacksonville and have traveled to many different hotels. Out of the 50-plus hotels I have stayed in, I would rate the Jacksonville Omni as top 5 (Kauai Hyatt #1). Our Executive Suite room had a nice view of the river. My wife and I were within walking distance of most of the downtown places of interest. We were within 30 minutes of the beach and could easily hop onto I-95 for a day trip to St Augustine. Downtown Jacksonville is a lot nicer given the money that went into upgrades for the superbowl. I would have rated the hotel higher with a more pleasant surrounding, but the fact remains that the Omni is downtown. I recommend signing up for their rewards before going to take advantage of any perks they may send in the mail (i.e. free room upgrade).

Not bad

from Elle481
Spent a long weekend in Jacksonville, FL visiting our son. We had a 50% off weekend stay that was about to expire so we used it (averaged out to be about $58 per night). Chose the Omni because it seemed to be centrally located in the city, as we did not have a car.
Our flight arrangements changes so we were scheduled to be in Jacksonville on Thrusday night. Called from the plane before we took off to see if they had a room. We were quoted their best rate of $195 and I just about dropped the phone. I asked if they could do any better and was told, "Why, that is our BEST and lowest rate for that day!" I then went through my spiel asking for AAA, AARP, COSTCO, SAM, and Entertainment rate - I never take the rate that I am given first off at any hotel I have been to. Well, surprise!!! The Entertainment rate was $89 for the night!!! We took it because we really needed a place to stay and were not ready to run around Jacksonville finding a better rate at 11:30 PM when we arrived.
Grabbed an airport shuttle when we arrived for around $22 for the two of us. This price was less than the $35 quoted for a cab. Luckly we only had one other couple with us in the van so we didn't do the milk run.
This was our first trip to Jacksonville and we really did not know what to expect as far as a downtown area. Well, it was not impressive at all. Our hotel had the entrance off the side. We were a block from Jackson Landing (a place with a few non impressive shops and some bars.) A civic center was directly across the street from us. We checked in and I gave them an upgrade certificate that I had from the Omni program. No luck for an upgrade till the morning. Our room was a standard room, clean, decorated fine (think Marriott). We had a coffee machine in our room. We didn't realize until the next morning (when we didn't get a paper) that in our room key package there were door hangers for morning delivery of coffee, tea, or juice, and the paper, which would have been nice to use. Too bad no one told us, and shame on us for not checking the key package when we got to our room. It was after midnight and we were just happy to arrive. The lobby bar (not impressive) was closed, so we headed across the street to Jacksonville Landing for a nightcap. That's when I realized that this was really not the hotel I should have reserved. Not a great place to walk around at night - bums, and pan handlers were tucked in several corners. I did not feel comfortable or safe at all!!!!
The next morning my husband went down to use our upgrade, which expired in a week, and was told that we would be given "their BEST room!!" Well, it was a corner room, just a smidge bigger than the last, but with two windows instead of one, and a view of the river, though the TV was planted in front of the window and blocked the view. I guess that's what Omini calls an upgrade.
Next evening we went down around 6pm for the advertised (in the local paper) Happy Hour at the bar before we headed out for dinner. Service was fine, but I guess Happy Hour means different things at different places. We expected some apps. and maybe two for one (or reduced) drinks. There weren't any even though the waitress did greet us with a comment on something to do with Happy Hour. I guess we must have missed something somewhere along the line.
Later on that evening we came back to our room and it had not been turned down. We really would have loved new towels for the next morning and it was too late to call when we got in. My husband asked at the desk the next morning and was told that turn down was only for Omni point members. When he came back and told me, I mentioned that we were Select Members and that's why we had the half price weekend and the upgrade!! I give up!!
(No turn down the next night either!)
Anyway, the hotel is fine, clean and the desk, etc, were the same, just nothing special. There was a Hyatt a few blocks away that looked a little more lively, a bit safer and better appointed and I think next time we might just give them a try.

Select Guest value

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I decided to stay in town this year for our anniversary. As an Omni Select Guest member, we took advantage of our 50% weekend stay coupon. Not only did we receive an outstanding rate of $55 per night, we also received a room upgrade without asking. We were given a corner room with a sitting area and king bed. A new Panasonic flat screen TV provided all the in room entertainment we needed. The bathroom was clean (which I am a stickler for) as was ther remainder of the room. Nice robes were provided along with morning beverage service and a newspaper of our choice. Late checkout today was at 5PM! That gave us ample time to lay out on the deck around the pool on the 4th floor. The pool is heated which was very nice in the 68 degree weather. The location is outstanding. We had tickets to La Boheme at the Performing Arts Center which is a walk across Water Street from the hotel. No fighting traffic or driving home after. Avondale was a short drive for breakfast as was late night dessert in San Marco. Lounging in Metro Park was also nice. Downtown is basically deserted on the weekends so you have the city to yourself. The Omni did it right this time.

Great location in downtown Jville

from BizTraveler
I couldn't have been happier with the Omni Jacksonville Hotel. It is right in the heart of downtown in the northbank riverfront district. I've stayed in many downtown hotels in many different cities.. Jacksonville has a great downtown.. well lit and has a very safe feel. This Omni has just been completely renovated and it is amazing! Take some time to check out the rooftop pool.. even if it's winter, just to see the views. Also take a stroll along the riverwalk and take the water taxi for a ride. The rooms are nice and the staff is world-class.

the renovation is nice

We stayed at the Omni Jacksonville on Nov 26, 2004. We got our room on an online bid site, and I was a little concerned about the negative reviews here. They are apparently about done renovating for the Superbowl in Jax in February, and our room looked like it was out of a magazine spread or something you'd see on a home makeover show. Brand new furniture, carpet, wallpaper, luxurious natural fiber bedspread, etc. We had a room on the 12th floor with a king bed, and my husband and I both thought the bed was very comfortable.
We did not go to the restaurant or the public areas of the hotel, so I do not know anything about that. We just checked in around eight at night and left first thing in the morning. The lobby is elegant, and the hotel desk clerk we checked in with was very pleasant. Our experience was definitely lovely, especially considering we only bid $45 for the room (and paid only $59 total after service fee and taxes).

scary

we had a reservation, with a confirmed rate. when we were leaving we received a bill for three times the quoted rate. the restaurant was below average also.

Suprised By The Poor Reviews

from A TripAdvisor Member
I booked a web special for my girlfriend and I to go on a quick weekend trip.

We made it to town 3 hours early and phoned the Omni to see f we could check in early. The girl at the desk was very accomodating allowing us to check in early and gave us a choice in which room we would like.

The only issues we encounterd were that housekeeping was very slow in getting our extra pillows and room service forgot our toast for breakfast.

The room was very clean and a good size. Our stay was wonderful and I am very surprised at the past reviews I have read.

I recommend it highly as well as a water taxi ride across the river to Ruths Chris.

Made our wedding day so easy

from worthwhilegirl
My husband & I stayed here on the night before our wedding as well as our wedding night. We stayed in a king suite & it was gorgeous. It was very clean & spacious! We have stayed in other omnis & this was so much nicer. The room was big & beautiful with an amazing view of the river & downtown. The bathroom was a little on the small size (espically for a suite). The staff was so kind & courteous!!! They had complimentary champange & chocolates in our room when we got back from the wedding!
It was above & beyond what we paid for at $79.00 per night.

okay, but not great

from A TripAdvisor Member
Tried their "romantic getaway" package. This included dinner and breakfast from room service, and the food was quite good. Overall the staff was professional, but not remarkable. The room was nice, but we have found many nicer rooms at this price point. Pool deck seemed a little less groomed than one would expect of the Omni chain.

Top Local Tips for Jacksonville

Its only a party city a few times a year The landing is an under occupied mall but cool to relax eat and shop on the river. Its mostly quite except during GA FL weekend, holidays, game days etc.. in other words, its not like the party spring break type headquaters. Its more of a business class. If you want fun and tons of night life, head out to the beaches. Its pretty busy any night of the week... But remember, beach hotels will be worn, sandy and salty, as the air itself can run them down... so expect a great view a great meal and fun action at the beach, but not a perfect room. When downtown, dont expect a party, and always use the buddy system.
