Best place to stay in Jacksonville

If you appreciate extraordinary customer service from a very friendly group of people who make you feel like you are at home...stay at this property...it's just the right size..with a great bar..large pool and a Ruth Chris restaurant.

Avoid the Hyatt across the river it's in bed need of renovation and very very large

Great Hotel, Great place to host a Meeting

I recently hosted a corporate meeting at this hotel, and it was outstanding!
The rooms satisfied even my pickiest attendees--they were recently renovated, all the bedding was brand new, and they were exceptionally clean.
I had a room with a riverview, and had a spectacular view of the city.
This is also an excellent hotel to host a meeting--their sales and catering staff are top notch and totally responsive to all your needs, the food was good, the service was excellent, and the prices very reasonable.

I plan several meetings annually for my company, and have recieved more positive feedback from this meeting than any others I have organized, and have made our CFO happy as well, because my total costs came in way under my budget!

I had the pleasure of staying at the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront August 2-6 2006. Every staff member that I came into contact with from the time I checked in to the time I checked out was so pleasant and courteous. I have stayed at this hotel several times in the past when it was a Hilton and always loved the way the staff treated me. I didn't know what to expect on this most recent stay with the new name change and all. They have done a wonderful job with the new renovation but the better news for me was that they still have the same warm and friendly staff. For me it doesn't matter the name on the hotel, there's many to select from these days, what matters to me is how they treat me when I arrive.

Great View

The rooms are large enough to be comfortable and the furniture/soft goods look to have been recently refurbished. the bathroom vanity area was a bit small (and low to the ground) but overall, i think the room was good.

The sleep kit (with a CD, eye mask, ear plugs, drap clip and lavendar linen spray) was kind of a waste but still a nice touch. The views across the river to downtown and the bridge was gorgeous, especially at night.

They have a starbucks on site, so you can get a decent cup of coffee.

The property has a yacht that they charter out for groups. I highly recommend this if you need to entertain (as an alternative to a boring conference room). the boat is lovely and the cruise around the area was really beautiful.

I would stay here again without hesitation.

Amazing views

My husband and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for a weekend getaway for our anniversary. The rooms were all very new and modern with drape clips, eye masks, and down comforters with extra pillows. GREAT nights sleep. We had a great view and all rooms have a balcony while the hotel sits directly on the river across from downtown Jacksonville...right on the Riverwalk. We took the river taxi across to Twisted Martini at the Landing and had too much fun! The hotel has a Ruth's Chris on site with the same great views. We enjoyed having drinks and luch by the pool. The staff was friendly and outgoing and the entire place was extremely clean. We had somewhat of a hard time finding the place, but a call to the hotel cleared that up...she stayed on the phone and helped us out. We plan on making this escape annually!

Crowne Plaza, much better than Hilton

As a frequent business traveler to Jacksonville, my company usually set us up at the Hilton...which was your basic full service hotel. Since my last stay, it has undergone a huge transformation as the Crowne Plaza. Perhaps I was just pleasantly surprised, but the renovations and rebranding is just what this hotel needed. I love the rooms, the extras, and I'm happy to see Ruth's Chris is still in tact. The pool has the best views. Request a downtown view if they are avail...every room in the hotel has a balcony. I'm definitely happy about the rebranding of this hotel...even the staff is friendlier.

I was told that the Crowne Plaza took over the management of this hotel from the Hilton, and what a terrific job they've done! Everything was so clean and beautiful, and the service and friendliness of the staff was excellent. The beds are the most comfortable of any I've ever slept in at any hotel, and the amenities and little extras made us feel very special. I highly recommend this hotel. While the other side of the river might have had more to offer in terms of walking to locations, the water taxi at a reasonable price took care of that. When I go back to Jacksonville, this is the place I'm going to stay. Great exercise room too with machines that work. I rate it five stars. The only downside was the location of the pool in a place that groups used for parties. ...

Not Hilton quality...

This place is not what I'd expect from a Hilton. The front desk staff were slow and inattentive. They gave me wrong answers to easy questions (How do I get to the water taxi?). Sometimes they disappeared to the back office leaving the desk unattended. No eye contact. Little common courtesy.

The carpet in the hallways is stained...everywhere. My room had a very noisy air conditioner that made a loud "thump" whenever it came on or went off. It woke me up several times during the night. The view would have been great except for the trash compactor and the dumpster directly below my window. The noise from the traffic on the bridge was loud even with the glass door closed. Shower drain was so slow I had to shut off the water for fear it would overflow the tub. Next time I go to Jax I'll try someplace else.

Friendly staff, average amenities

The Jacksonville Hilton is a fairly large hotel in a very picturesque setting on the river. Behind the hotel is easy access to the riverfront promenade and I would imagine in warm weather the pool and sundeck is a nice place to spend some time. Another strong plus was the very friendly and helpful staff at the front desk and at the concierge desk. As a downside the hotel's exterior is rather 1970s concrete and the inside has a very average look and feel, not as upmarket as other Hilton's. The rooms are standard and both the lobby and halls have a little bit of a stale air smell. Furthermore the food in the hotel's "regular" restaurant (the American Grill as opposed to the "fancy" restaurant, Ruth's Chris) has absolutely horrible food. The pluses and minuses cancel out to make it a very average hotel.

I was here for three nights in late July. From a positive standpoint, you can't beat the location on the river just across the bridge from Jacksonville Landing and very close to a really great restaurant on the same side of the river. Sorry I don't remember the name. Also, I was constantly impressed with the friendly staff, from the front desk to the parking attendant. But...Hilton should have torn down this property and rebuilt years ago. They have plenty of acerage at this site. Someone in the Hilton organization is not paying attention. The bathrooms are impossibly small and there is no way to expand them. The most irritating problem is the air conditioner. Mine, and others in my group in other rooms had the same problem, was noisy. It just wasn't the level of the noise but the varying levels of noise. I was awakened every time the unit came on. They remind me of those units in old motels. Once again, I doubt a central system could be retrofitted. I finally removed the nice wooden cover and stuffed three towels under the unit and it helped a little.

I hate to complain because the staff was so nice. And my room looked as if it had just been redecorated. But with the problems they have, Hilton does Jacksonville-and themselves--a disservice by not imploding this relic and erecting a real Hilton.

Top Local Tips for Jacksonville

Jacksonville Landing This is on the opposite side of the St. John's River however there is much more to do in this area. There is nightlife, shopping, and dining at the Jacksonville Landing. My tip would be to visit the Twisted Martini here.

The Landing is Lame Save your time and stay away from The Landing. There are NO good places to eat over there. It is a very tired area that doesn't seem to be trying very hard to impress the people that do venture over there. We have eaten at 6 of the eateries there over the last 3 years and none of them has made a good impression. If you are staying at a hotel nearby, eat at the hotel restaurant. Ruth's Chris is a very good choice for dinner! The Chart House is cozy with a nice atomsphere but your server will press you to purchase an expensive bottle of wine that tastes like it was filtered through dirty socks. The food is not up to par with the price.

Fantastic Holiday (Christmas) Light Shows We went especially for the lighted boat parade & the fireworks. It didn't disappoint. We live in Florida so see lots of quality 'tourist' or 'special' type displays throughout the year. This was as good as Disney's fireworks! We stayed at the Crowne Plaza because they have balconies on the riverside. It was cold & windy that night so if you're standing on the sidewalks be sure to bring warm coats & hats. You won't want to have to leave early due to that discomfort. We also attended the holiday craft show -- another winner. Anything you could want in almost any medium you could think of and qualtity too!
