I love the cheeca lodge! It takes me 1 1/2 hours to get there from home so it's perfect for a quick and relaxing get away. I do wish Florida residents were offered a discount during slow season, so I could enjoy your facilities with my family of 5. I have recommended the Cheeca too many friends in and out of state. I always feel confident that I have recommended a wonderful getaway, and know my friends and family will be very happy.

A great, relaxed vacation at Cheeca

We just spent five nights at Cheeca in a two-bedroom villa overlooking the golf course. Although not fancy, the unit was clean and comfortable, and the golf course location was the best of all of the villas -- request building 801 - 808. We got a great off-season price through the small luxury hotels website **** $338 a night for a two bedroom suite with two baths and two screened lanais) and thus the lack of luxury in the unit was not bothersome. The watersports -- from windsurfing to hobiecats -- free golf and clubs, fitness classes, free tennis rackets, lovely pool made this a perfect place for an active family. I would recommend this resort if you can get a good rate.

I have stayed at the Cheeca Lodge before and could not wait for a return visit. I don't mind paying for a wonderful resort experience and last year the Cheeca was a wonderful resort experience. This year, however, the resort was taken over the RockResorts and the changes they are bringing on are only for their short term gain. This year I was not allowed to stay in the main lodge building because I have a family of 5. No Cots allowed!!. I had to stay in one of their bungalows which was decorated and constructed in the 1980's, very old and tired.
RockResorts is now selling off their bungalow units one by one to unsuspecting investors who think they are buying into a premier Keys resort. My main complaints about the Cheeca are:

This premier Keys resort cannot rest on past reviews for very long and these investors will not get what they bargained for. I love Islamorada and the employees tried their best but their hands and rockresorts money were tied.

Goodbye Cheec-aaaah

I read some other reviews and can't imagine what Cheeca Lodge they visited. The Cheeca Lodge we stayed at was a dump. It does have that certain "army barracks" quality and the rooms were awful: chipped, broken tiles, formica peeled away from counters (formica???), plastic ceiling grates with holes (plastic ceiling grates???). Because we were there over the holiday, (12/26/03 - 1/2/04), the construction was suspended, so we heard no noise. However, every morning we were greeted with the sight of a partially-constructed something under our deck. It looked like a child's paper mache project. Giant-sized. Surrounding that was a fence with orange plastic lining. Wow! Lovely garden view!
This is a Rockresort. We had a two-bedroom suite at close to $1,000 a night. Do we feel like suckers! Beach was horrible, water murky, pool filled to the brim with young children. I do disagree with some reviewers comments re the help. Everyone was lovely and tried very hard to be helpful. They are, however, on "island time."

From the moment that we arrived, all I could think was aaah. The place was incredible, our room was fantastic, service was outstanding and at every turn the relaxation factor was a ten. We enjoyed lying in a hammock on the beach complete with tiki torches, while we watched the most spectacular moonrise over the water. We are counting the days until we return in March.

The attitude/service in phenomenal!!!

My girlfriend and I always enjoy phenomenal service at Cheeca! We've been going twice a year for the past 3-years (summer & winter). We actually went 2-weeks ago...AND to our surprize...Cheeca was totally renovated!!! (Plasma TV, new furniture, new bathroom, etc.)THIS WAS OUR BEST TRIP EVER - I ALSO ASKED HER TO MARRY ME! (She said "yes")

Better than expected!

After reading several negative reviews, I had become quite hesitant to complete our reservation at Cheeca Lodge Nov. 16th, but since the Nascar races were on close by & lodging had become quite limited in the area, we chose to go ahead & take a chance. We had just spent the 2 previous nights at the Ritz Carlton in West Palm Beach & now were looking forward to seeing what the Florida Keys were all about.

When my sweetie & I arrived at Cheeca Lodge, we were pleasantly surprised with the beauty of the grounds & facility. All the staff were quite pleasant & helpful. Though our room wasn't quite ready for our 4pm checkin, they were courteous, & offered to get a cell number where they could contact us when the room was ready. This bit of time gave us an opportunity to do a bit of sightseeing, as well as purchase some souveniers at a local shop.

We returned to Cheeca about an hour later, glad that our room was now ready for us. The room was in the main building, & though it didn't have a view of the bay, it did have a nice view overlooking the treetops with a distant view of the ocean. The room was quite clean, the bedding & lace drapes were beautiful, and the bathroom was quite elegant, as well as sanitary. We did notice the construction in various areas of the facility, but were not bothered by it.

Once unpacked, we walked downstairs & toured the grounds, enjoying the most specatular sunset I've ever experienced! Ahhh, what a great way to end our quick Florida getaway! We had dinner & drinks on the outside terrace of the Curt Goudy restaurant, while continuing to enjoy the amazing view. Though the food took awhile to arrive, the waiter was attentive & pleasant. We also enjoyed the fine display of George Bush Sr memorabilia from his ten annual fishing tournaments at the Cheeca Lodge. Yep, he'd been there just 2 weeks prior to us!

Overall, we felt our trip was a positive one. We're already anticipating a return visit with our family & will certainly make Cheeca Lodge our "home away from home".

Very much enjoyed the Cheeca!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Cheeca in early October. The rooms were far from fancy, but very clean. They were draining the ponds and renovating the main building, so that was an annoyance. But, the food was excellent, Atlantic's Edge was 4 star. Curt Gowdy Room a lot of fun.The grounds were very well maintained, and the staff was so friendly and helpful. Decent gym, 2 pools to choose from, fun little 9 hole golf course, great swimming off the pier. Would go back tomorrow.

6 nights in August

I stay in the best hotels on business so have become quite picky about hotels over the years, but I prefer to stay in simpler places when on holiday. I went to the keys with my teenage daughter for the first time in August. We arrived at the Cheeca Lodge on a rainy Friday morning and got frightened at how quiet the place was and the prospect of staying there for 4 nights. However, the weather improved later and by early afternoon, the pool area was lively. There was a nice mix of guests, all ages, families, all well behaved. The pool isn't huge but was adequate. We had a 1 bed suite, and at some point a double bedroom, which, indeed as I'd read in reviews, were quite dated, furnishings a bit worn and faded but nevertheless, very spacious, clean, and overall pleasant, plus the wide cable TV choice was a hit with my daughter. I must admit, the place was initially a disappointment for 2 hours but it grew on us very quickly, so much so that we stayed there again on our return from the dump that was the Wyndham Casa Marina in Key West. We loved the pool area, the free 24 hrs internet in the lobby, free water and starbucks coffee in room, yoga on the beach, pelicans on the pontoon, fishing. The staff was nice, breakfast too expensive, the location is great, it's the keys and there are no sandy paradise-like beaches, but the resort ground is very clean and wholesome. The artificial beach is impeccable, the ground vegetation beautiful, I spent a lot of time walking around and laying in the hammocks. In the end we loved it for a very relaxing time, and we would go back. I think value for money varies greatly according to their rate and what you expect. We didnt' use the golf or creche facilities, I heard a complain about the latter and the fact that it was never opened.

terrible attitude

I made a reservation on July 2003 for arrival in November. It was confirmed by mail and charged to my credit card. EIGHT days before my arrival, the cheeca called to inform me that they could not honor the reservation. I pointed out the difficulties that I now faced. I wondered how they only knew eight days before my trip that renovations would cause such a debacle. I was only rudely offered significantly inferior accomodations.

I have since learned that these renovations are related to the conversion or addition of condos for sale at the resort. It would thus seem that this property is takinbg on a significantly different direction.

Save your money and go someplace else

My husband and I had read the other reviews that were posted about the Cheeca and were thinking about cancelling our reservations but decided to proceed. We should have cancelled. The resort looks like an army style barricks compound. We were constantly driving around construction trucks and were woken to the sound of them and the housekeeping staff yelling to one another. The room was dated, to say the least, and lacked the advertised minibar, which was fine because we stocked our own beverages. The food was overpriced and below average. The resort fee was a joke, since they nickel and dimed you for everything else.
The walls were paper-thin; we could hear our neighbors (and their 2 children's) conversations. I was severely dissapointed by what they advertised on their website and what we received. The sink was cracked and so were the bathroom counters, the curtains were moldly, you get the idea. I would not recommend this resort to anyone.

Top Local Tips for Islamorada

Morada Bay Restaraunt We had a great dinner there. Ingredients were fresh and prepared well.

Robbies is not so great After everything I read about feeding the wild tarpon at Robbies, first of all they charge a fee (it was advertised as a free activity) and secondly the tarpon are in a pen, not wild! Very overrated and not a pleasant experience at all.

Causal dinning with a great view Try Lazy Days. Good inexpensive local food with a great view. Also, do not miss the sunsets at Lorilei, but I would dine elsewhere.
