Great experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is very, very beautiful with a pool right next to the ocean. You feel like you are at a floating hotel because the ocean is RIGHT there. The service was not that great. We had a leaky shower door that was not fixed all week. We used all of our spare towels every a.m. to stop a flood and the towels were not replenished until we called..every day! Other than that, the food is great and the trendy Sushi bar on site is very fun. We would probably revisit this property.

Wow!!! Fantastic

The Diplomat is one of those hotels you will never forget. I had the luck to stay at the Diplomat Country Club wich is just five minutes away of the Westin Diplomat Resort. It was like having two hotels in one. The country club had 60 suites and was very relaxing and quiet, this is were the golf and tennis courses were located and the spa as well. The Westin was the resort with a 1000 rooms where the waterfall pools, nice restaurants and the beaches were located. You will be able to use them both since they are the same hotel, so it was nice for us because during the day we would go to the beach where you will see lots of people having fun, but at night we went back to our quiet and relaxing suite. The service was more than I would ever expect in a hotel; they pay a lot of attention to detail. It was a remarkable experience for us, we would love to visit this great resort again with a little more time.

Rip-off - bad location - no beach to speaK of

We had been staying in the wonderful downtown Miami Intercontinental hotel in an enormous suite with our children but after a few days we felt we really wanted some time on the beach and a place that offered kid's activities. This hotel was recommended to us by AMEX travel as offering rooms with a balcony providing access to the pool area and a location right on a private beach, with daily kid's club suitable for our 3 and 6 year olds. When we got there there were no rooms that offer access to the ground floor pool - the lowest floor where they had a room was the fifteenth - and it was tiny - yet at $300 a night it was $60 a night more expensive than a suite at the Intercontinental. It was also a conference hotel - in fact more of a conference hotel than the hotel we had left - which is at least up-front about the fact that it is more suited to business travellers than families. The kids club turned out to be only available for children over the age of 5 - but we found this out only after booking the children in for a 'kids night out' 6pm-10pm on the Saturday night so that my husband and I could celebrate his birthday with a child - free meal ... but when we arrived at the kids room we were told that despite the three telphone conversations that we had had with the kids club manager that they could not take the youngest of our children. As to the hotel's other claims....The 'beach' is in fact a 10 foot wide strip of sand that abutts a sea wall - You could go stand in the ocean but there was no way you could lie on it or play on it....I think this is a deliberate feature of the hotel's design...they want you on the complex (which does feature a v attractive series of pools and waterfalls) rather than spending time on the beach for free. The meals and drinks on the complex are ridiculously overpriced - and poor quality - and everything is laden with taxes and in-built gratuities. The Spa is off site and involves you paying a daily fee to go there in the 'free shuttle bus' and charges like a facial fmiddle of nowhere.. but we became so resentful of being Westin's cash-cow that we made it a point of principle to get out of the resort as often as we could - taking a $5 cab ride into Hollywood to use the public beach and some of the reasonably priced restaurants - which really defeats the object of choosing a resort hotel. However, it was only when we checked out that our disatisfaction with the hotel was complete when we saw that with all the extra taxes the room was $70 a night more than we had expected to pay. I would advise travellers to choose this hotel only if you never want to leave the complex and you enjoy being ripped off.

What a GREAT hotel

We just came back from our vacation at the Diplomat in the US. I always see this website before booking my vacations and this website helps me decide where should I stay. I just have to say that this hotel was fabulous! I love Miami but miami was missing something, and now with the Diplomat Miami is again my top destination. This hotel had everything we were looking for. The service was excellent and the people were very friendly. They have a very nice pool area and the rooms were great. We were thinking in visitng Cancun for our next vacation, but we are definetly coming back to the Westin Diplomat in Florida.

loved it!

The Westin Diplomat was excellent! The staff was great, holding the doors for us, and really trying to make us comfortable. I will definitely stay here again. The pool is gorgeous and the food is delicious! I was treated like a Queen. It really is a beautiful place, near tons of great things to do as well.

More than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just visited the hotel few weeks ago. I just have to say that I always go to westin hotels because of their service and heavenly beds. This hotel is more that I was expecting. Its beautifull and the staff are well trained. The view of the room, furniture and service are not like in a regular 5 star hotel. I did some research of the hotel before my visit and I now I know why this hotel cost 800 million dollars. There is now way to descirbe it... you have to see it to belive it.

Great Hotel!

The Westin Diplomat was a great experince. They have everything in luxury and service, I travel a lot for bussiness and leisure and this hotel has made an impression. Its in between miami and ft. lauderdale so everytning is close. South beach and las olas in ft. lauderdale. But you dont have to go out of the hotel because they have everything in it pretty much. They have 5 restaurants which are excellent in food and service... my favorite was Hollywood Prime the steak house. I will definetly come back with my family, this trip was for bussiness but we had lots of fun. Golf Tennins and the spa threatmen in the ocean front cabana were my favorite things we did, but what i liked the most was the furniture in the room wich was on the 33rd floor overlooking the florida ocean.

Awsome Hotel... Excellent Service

I went to the Westin Diplomat with my family for spring break on April 2003. When we arrived there the building itself made us say WOW....The luxury of the lobby area and the furniture of the room. The service and attention in the front desk was beyond expected. The pool and the staff were very helpfull, they even took us and set us up in launges with towels..... They were very busy but always with a smile in their face. The food was very good, a little expensive but I will pay the price again. There are many things to do like golf, tennis, the spa, awsome pool area, and a great workout room.We have been in many resorts in the world but this one will make us come back again because of their beautifull and friendly staff. Westin Diplomat keep up the good work!!! John Mathews

never returning...

from A TripAdvisor Member
This week we were staying with my folks in Hollywood...I went to the Diplomat to check it out for future reference. Lunch was great - very expensive - but I don't mind paying for good food. After lunch, my 2 year-old dipped her feet in the kiddie pool for a couple of minutes - the pool is located a few yards from the restaurant terrace where we ate. I asked the pool staff if I could have a towel to dry her off. They told me to ask the pool manager. I asked the pool manager, after explaining that we just spent nearly $100 on lunch...he told me it was absolutely out of the question. I will never return and they deserve to go out of business. I am the type of customer that doesn't mind paying their ridiculous prices - and this is how I was treated.

Boring, and a Rip Off

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is just one big rip off, everything is overly priced. The hotel itself is badly situated and their is nothing to do within walking distance. So if you would like to be bored, this is the hotel for you. I found the security to be very racist as they would ask for proof that i am staying at the hotel every now and then. The food is overly priced and tastes terrible. Its just in general not a fun place to be. And the beach is shared with every other small hotel and motel on the beach so its usually crowded and not very fun.

Top Local Tips for Hollywood

O'Hara's Go downtown for some nightlife. Short taxi ride ($5) to Hollywood Blvd/Harrison Street for live music at O'Hara's or Sushi Blues. Check for Ruby Baker at O'Hara's or Juanita Dixon at Sushi Blues. Escape "resort" entertainment and get some local flavor.

Food in the area: foodies beware Let's be real; a large proportion of people in Southern Florida cannot taste or chew their food very well. This is reflected in the cuisine! There is no shortage of restaurants in Florida, but they rarely compete with the food in major cities. Just because a place has high prices and ambitious-sounding menu items does not mean the food will be good (case in point: Nikki Marina and its mediocre sushi). If you're a foodie, don't set your expectations too high. Also, there IS good food to be found in the area, but you have to look around. Some of my favorites are the Greek Islands restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale (sublime), Argentango in Hollywood (get the skirt steak), and JBs (great seafood on the beach) in Deerfield.

Le Tub Great earthy place for a burger!
