Historical Traveller Reviews of The Westin Fort Lauderdale Hotel
We stayed five nights in early February, 2006 with a Hotwire bargain rate of $85/night. The hotel was outstanding in every way, including a large and handsome room with the bathroom and all facilities sparkling clean and up-to-date, a fitness center well-equipped for a hotel this size and an outdoor pool and waterfall that were lovely and well-maintained. It is right off I-95, 10 minutes from the main commercial strip of No. Federal Hwy. and 15 minutes from beaches. Although the breakfast buffet is pricey, the inexpensive and excellent Duffy's Diner is 2 minutes down the road, or the marvelous French bakery Croissan'Time is 15 minutes away at 1201 No. Federal. Recommended restaurants in the area include Castel D'Angelo for Italian or Sage for French.
s O.K. - Not in the Touristy Areas
We stayed at the Westin four nights pre and post cruise. The rooms were part of the "Get Up & Go" promotion through Fairfeild Resorts. We were given the certificates for free nights for purchasing two cruises through our travel agent. We ended up paying a total of $107 for the four nights since we had to pay a admin. fee, taxes and parking ($10.60 per night). The hotel is O.K. The lobby smelled a little strange. The location is fine for business travelers, but is not close to any tourist areas. You definitely need a car if you are staying here, but remember you will need to pay for parking. The best part of the room is the "Heavenly Bed". It was very comfortable. We really did not see anything special about the "Heavenly Shower" though. The property appears to be older. We received a USA Today and Wall Street Journal each day. There are more in the lobby if you don't receive one. We did not eat any meals there since the prices seemed a little high. I believe the breakfast buffet was over $16 per person. There are several restaurants nearby, such as Sweet Tomatoes, Longhorn Steakhouse, Dunkin Donuts, Chili's and a neat little diner that has daily specials and great hamburgers.
Is it 4 star hotel ?
I did get this hotel from priceline for $77.00. Dec 30, and 31. On their web site, it was $209.00. We just needed somewhere decent to visit Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art to see King Tut. As other tripadvisor member say, it is O.K. for the business but not for the vacation. It is true. Location was far from the downtown, and the beach. Hotel itself was o.k. if it was 3 star. I paid only total of $180.00 including taxes for 2nights. If I did pay their web price of $209.00 plus tax, I will be very disappointing. Clean place to sleep, and nothing more. For the vacation, I will get somewhere closs to the beach.
The name sure sounds impressive - do not let that fool you too!
We were not impressed. Carpet was filthy and the whole room needs upgraded, except for the tv, bed & linens (which were very nice). Our toilet ran all night. Called the front desk at 6:30 and they said they would send an engineer to fix the problem. At 9:30 pm I called to tell them not to send anyone up, as we were going to sleep. When I checked out, I reminded them that the toilet was still running. I would give this hotel a 3 star at most. If I am in the area again,I will find another hotel to stay at.
Strictly for Business
Checked in and received upgrade to a suite. Typical Westin decor, with furniture in okay condition. The bathroom was older but in good working order. The windows of my suite were in bad shape showing the age of the property.
The public facilities were okay, but nothing exciting.
Breakfast was fair in the restaurant, but it took about 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge that I was waiting for a table.
Room service was again "fair" with a very salty Salmon entree.
Overall, this Westin should not be a 4 star but a 3 star property. It is showing it's age and needs to be rebranded in my opinion to a Sheraton.
If you are in Ft Lauderdale on business, and aren't expecting true 4 star quality, this is a fine business hotel. I can't imagine vacationing at this property. It is strictly a business destination in my book.
Good, but not great
We stay at this Westin quite often whenever we visit family in the area. In my opinion, it's one of the best hotels in that immediate area -- but it certainly is not perfect. The rooms are typical, nice, clean Westin rooms. However, the AC is not always powerful enough to keep up with the intense heat, so don't expect your room to be very cool if you return in the middle of the day. The staff tries hard to be helpful, but I've definitely found them to be a bit rude/short from time to time. The bar tender particuarly seems to always be having a bad day. The restuarant serves excellent food, but even so, the prices are high and the service isn't always steller. The pool area is actually very nice, but it must be mentioned that the highway is only a little ways away -- meaning your lovely pool time will certianly be interupted by the sounds of trucks roaring down the highway. There's also a small airport close, so private plans often fly low overhead. But despite all the noise, the pool area can still be very enjoyable. The gym has just been redone, and so is very nice. All in all, the hotel is a great spot if you're looking for a place to stay while on business or visiting family in the immediate area. But don't make it a vacation destination.
Upscale Business Hotel

My experience at this Hotel was a very positive one. I was a bit concerned with some of the other reviews that I read prior to my stay however I ended up being pleasantly surprised when I arrived. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable about the surrounding areas. Sure the Hotel is not within walking distance from anything major but if you are there on business or if you rent a car than it works just fine. You will probably pay a lot more to stay at an ocean front property regardless. The Heavenly beds and Showers are amazing and all that they are "cracked up to be". The food was delicious and the buffets are a good value. They are also in the process of doing some minor renovations to all their rooms so I'm sure it will be even nicer by the end of the summer. I will definitely stay at this hotel the next time I am in town.
Yet another disappointing Westin. Poor attention to detail.
This was most likely my last stay in a Westin. While Westin leads with its heavenly bed and modern decor, my past visits to 4 different Westins have been dismal.
This particular stay shows that a nice bed won't make up for overall lack of attention to detail and cleanliness.
After a smooth check-in, I take the elevator up to my floor to find a hallway with dirty dinged up walls and corroded door locks. After getting into the room, the bathroom is very dated with old tile which is broken in several areas, and the water coming out of the faucet was brown!! The toilet was dirty as well, with brown stains inside of it. Outside of the bathroom, the carpet was stained.
The $15 grilled shrimp salad I ordered from room service had 3 shrimp on it.
This hotel is no where near what a 4 star hotel should be. Avoid it unless you get a REALLY low price. The people at Westin really need to step up their hotels to be TRUE 4 star hotels. Right now, most of them are mediocre, but have a nice bed, which doesn't make you a 4 star hotel.
On the good side, it is right next to interstate 95, the staff was friendly, and you could self park for free.
Watch Out for this One!

WATCH OUT for this hotel. The pictures of the site/grounds on popular websites are deceptive. Morover, staff, especially front desk staff are rude, untrained, and nonaccommodating. The state of hotel facilities is deplorable; including stained carpets, marred walls, and a moldy pool and waterfall. Dining entries are not only overpriced but deliver extremely small portions (including a "Crab Cakes" dish that includes only "One" crab cake. Few if any hotel managers are in evidence, day or night, and attention to customer satisfaction is all but absent! Few if any restaurants are located near to the hoteal, as alternatives and cab fares to these are $$$.
Probably the worst choice of our holiday in USA. It's way off the tourist track so if you don't have a car don't consider it. The staff there were totally useless, room not made up at end of day, maid then accused us of having 'don't disturb' on door (categorically did not), no after hours mini bar replenishment, desk staff trainees with no supervisor meaning incorrect charges - just a disaster.
Top Local Tips for Fort Lauderdale
only used this hotel for one night pre-cruise. Did not visit Fort Lauderdale as such. Bad experience with the taxi driver. Did not know his way around and took us way out. We had to 'phone the hotel to get directions. After running up the meter we negotiated half (which was still way too much) .
