Decent Stay

The hotel was fine. The room was average, nothing fancy, but everything we needed... a bed and a working bathroom. It was cleaned every day by housekeeping.
The pool area was nicer than other hotels we saw along this strip - many pools were right by the road, this pool was surrounded by the hotel and private from those not staying at this hotel.
The beach is across the street, and the Holiday Inn has their own private access.
We didn't pay all that much for the hotel so it was worth the money we spent.
I would be willing to stay here again.

Not what I thought it would be

I really wanted to give this hotel the benefit of the doubt but I couldn't..

The elevators that take you to the rooms were in very poor condition, the latch on the door to my room was broken, the room was dirty, the pool heater didn't work, and the pool bar area smelled of vomit. The best part on my trip though was when a water pipe broke on the 1st floor of the hotel and they had to shut the water off for the entire evening and most of the night...no showers, no toilets, nothing....fortunately it was fixed by morning....

This isn't the nicest hotel that I ever stayed at, but the staff was nice, the room was clean (although it could use a makeover), and it is right across the street from the beach. The pool is nice and there is a great little bar attached that serves some tasty frozen drinks. It's definitely a good value. I would recommend someone staying there but warn them that it isn't the Ritz.

Somewhat rundown

The people working there seemed very nice but the hotel seemed grubby and rundown with rusty doors and water tinted a light yellow color. The carpets were sticky. One note about the continental breakfast: we got coupons to redeem for the breakfast in the onsite Denny's. The people working in the Denny's were rude when asked any questions. The waiter told us that the continental breakfast consisted of a slice of toast and a glass of juice or cup of coffee. That is it. My wife left a tip and a different server came over, gave a quick look around, and pocketed the tip himself. We never liked Denny's to begin with and now we have more reasons.

Anything gets by as a Holiday Inn these days

Remember 20 years ago when the name Holiday Inn was a guarantee of a top quality hotel? Man, how they've let themselves go. Gross over-franchising and insufficient quality control mean you now really don't know what your going to get from this brand. This place is just one step up from a tatty motel: corridors in the open air, crude industrial-style elevators, a highway-side location, and grubby decor. The bed linen is washed on site, with not much evidence that an iron ever passes over it. The catering facilities are, well, a branch of Dennys. Yes, this veritable institution is actually connected to the hotel, helping the obesity epidemic along with mega-calorific breakfasts of pancakes with sides of bacon AND sausage. Ask for fruit and the waitress looks perplexed for a moment, but eventually brings a bowl of under-ripe melon and grapes. Not much demand, apparently: it certainly doesn't appear on the menu. Now to be positive: the hotel is reasonable value, available by internet at a lower price than other major brands in the area. The room was ok for size and had a balcony, the usual two double beds, and nice touches like complimentary toiletries. Location is good for the beach, but you'll need a car to get to downtown Fort Lauderdale. Finally, a little whiff of scandal. At checkout, the management were very polite and friendly, asking enthusiastically if everything had been ok. Then a survey form was brandished. If I received one of those in the mail, I was told, they were looking for lots of "Excellents" to be checked; "We give points for Excellents," I was told! Nice one, guys, but sorry, I'll be looking for the "Really isn't up to what you'd expect of a Holiday Inn" box. If I miss out on the points, and never accumulate enough for a free night here, I can live with that.

Interesting hotel........

Stayed here one night in Feb. 05. This hotel has seen its better days, but is worth the stay because of its location and price. But, it does need to be renovated and it has to be done soon. The front office has a sign that everyone will get an evaluation sent to them and they will only accept "Excellent." No way!

I recently stayed at the H.Inn LBTS for an 18 day period, and had a wonderful time. Although in need of some renovation, I found the property to be very friendly and welcoming, especially the front desk and bellmen.

However, I was disappointed with some of the housekeeping staff. Although my room was usually cleaned to an good standard, I came back to find housekeeper's in there talking on their cell phones, watching TV and lying on the bed. On one occasion, I opened my door to find the housekeeper inside talking on their cell phone in Spanish. I was disturbed by this as I understood they had to keep the door open when they were working in the room. It's unsettling to wonder what they'd been doing behind closed doors. It was also annoying to come back to a freezing room after they'd adjusted the AC - I prefer it warmer.

But, the location of the hotel was superb, just a short stroll across El Mar Drive to the beach where you could rent beach chairs, etc.
Lauderdale by the Sea, with its great restaurants, bars, etc was an easy 5-10 minute stroll away and the heart of Fort Lauderdale just a short drive away.
Denny's in the lobby was very handy, and again the staff in there were very friendly and helpful.
Having a washer/dryer easily accessible was good - during an 18 day stay your clothes get very grubby!!
A free newspaper is a nice gesture - some of the most expensive properties do not even offer this.

All in all, a great vacation and I'd have no hesitation in staying at this property again - my 18 days there were a pleasure.

Whilst writing I would praise the attentions of Craig - General Manager, Vivek - Front Desk Supervisor, and all the wonderful Front and Bell Desk staff - thank you for being such a friendly crew. Look forward to seeing you in 2005.

Location is good - and they do try - but...

I would have been embarrassed if anyone we know had visited us in our room.

The room was clean, and there were the usual toiletries provided (including toothpaste, razor, shave creme), and it was nice having a Denny's right in the lobby (free breakfast included every day). But the poor old place is being held together with spit and baling wire. Why doesn't somebody put some maintenance money in this place before it falls down?

The service stank on Columbus Day weekend

I stayed by myself in Holiday Inn by the Sea from October 7 through October 11, 2004, largely based on the positive reviews posted on TripAdvisor.

I found that the hotel was generally a good value, clean and well maintained, and I was satisfied with the quality of my room. However, on the second day, I returned to my room at midnight after being out since the morning to find a note from the maid on my bed apologizing for not having new towels ready when she cleaned. The note promised that the towels would be brought to the room when they were available. I had showered twice since the the room was cleaned the day before. The used towels had been removed and not replaced. I had only one towel left.

When I returned to my room the next day, once again about midnight after being out all day, I found my room had not been cleaned at all! Of course, my only remaining towel, which had been used, was not replaced. I called the desk clerk to complain, to no avail. I was told that the only reason the room would not be cleaned could have been because I left a "do not disturb sign" on my door, which was not the case. I did get the towels replaced the following morning.

At about 10:30 the night before checking out, I asked the desk clerk to make a reservation for shuttle service to the airport for 5:30 the following morning. She told me go back to my room and she would confirm this within ten minutes. When I received no confirmation more than an hour later, I called the front desk from my room to ask about my shuttle reservation. I spoke to a different desk clerk, who then made the reservation.

I don't know if the service I received was an abberation on a Columbus Day weekend, but it was bad enough for me to not want to choose to stay there again.

Room Was Not up to Holiday Inn Standards!

Two thumbs down! Carpet in some places totally worn out. Room extremely humid & musty to the point they had a dehumidifier in the room but it was full and not working. Water in toilet and shower a yellow color, still have figured that one out. Bathroom door hinge so rusty the door couldn't close. Enough black hair in the shower and walls of the shower that you could weave yourself a wig. Toothpick in the drain of the shower to help the water drainage. Springs in mattress left a pattern on our backs and legs. Lots of tiny holes in the walls Wow what an experience, we definitely will not repeat. Although this sounds like a pick complaint we didn't raise a stink about it but we still aren't over the experience.

Top Local Tips for Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale By The Sea is the BEST The Business Assoc is fabulous! There is a great shopping center a couple blocks from the beach. We stayed at A Little in by the Sea II and had a great time in the newly done rooms. #25 is the best! If you are going to show up after 8:30p make sure you find out about the late check in procedure as you will not be able to figure out where anyone is or how to get to your room otherwise. Speaking from experience here...ASK! Cost $40 cab with tip to get from airport in taxi.

Water Taxi explorations Was told by our trasport guy to the airport that we should have taken a water taxi in and around the intercoastal canals. Can stop and go as you want for one fee. Would have had to take a taxi but kinda wished we would have done this since we probably won't be going back there anytime soon

Beware Find another place to stay, the beach is beautiful but Holiday Inn Lauderdale by the sea is a dive!
