beware of the pool-not egalitarian treatment

We just returned from Lago Mar 2/27/09 with mixed reviews. The beach was very nice and staff very friendly. It's all the other things that are lacking from a so called 4 star hotel. We were verbally assaulted at the pool for taking someone's chair which hadn't been used for two days but was "saved"?. We complained twice about reserved chairs and we're assured that there were none. Wrong!!! The next day more than a dozen "occupied" signs were planted on chairs. The staff assured us that the pool manager would be notified, but never was. We talked to him and he admitted some long time customers did indeed have reserved seats and it is awkward at times. Thus, if the hotel had been full ,choices would be minimal. Definitely some communication problems here. We took the shuttle and it cost us $9 to go a little over a mile. At other 4 star hotels we were always given an overview of the grounds, activities, and how the hotel functions. Not here, so learn fast that gratuities are automatically added, thus you could double tip. The hotel room was o.k. with a closet that was difficult to open because the bed was up against it (till I moved it) and the bathroom at an irregular angle making it hard to get around. If you go for the beach it's great but the price (food and beach chairs) as well as the special "perks" for regulars doesn't lend this hotel to be an egalitarian opportunity. Our rating for the "4 star hotel", deserves to be more like an expensive 2.

I stayed at Lago Mar 5/22-5/24/04 - The service was probably the best I have had in a long time -from the moment I arrived at the bell hop to the day I was leaving. The SUITES are absoultely beautiful and LARGE. The grounds are outstanding. It is a great place to go with a family. It has mini.golf course, volley ball, chess,shuffle board,and a park. I will definately be going back soon!!! +++++++++++

We stayed at the Lago Mar the day prior to leaving Ft Lauderdale on a Caribbean cruise. The resort has been around for a number of years (I recall staying there as a kid back in the 1960's) and it always seems to exude a quiet, low-key elegance without being ostentatious. Despite its age, everything appears to be well-maintained and up-to-date. Unlike many of the hotels in the area, Lago Mar is located in a quiet, predominantly residential area, away from the constant traffic of US 1 and A1A, but convenient to both the airport and Port Everglades.
Our room was a 1-bedroom suite, which included a living room area, kitchenette, 1 1/2 bathrooms and a balcony that overlooked the pool and gardens with a decent (but not outstanding) view of the ocean. There were TV's in both the living room and bedroom.
The accommodations were clean and comfortable--not luxurious--but comparable to a small, well-furnished apartment.
Our only meal at the hotel was breakfast the morning of our cruise. The dining room was bright and spacious, with plenty of large windows through which to enjoy the ocean view. We ate from the breakfast buffet...very good with adequate variety...though you might have expected something a little more lavish for a hotel of this stature.
The staff was friendly and unobtrusive...all in all, a very good stay--I would recommend Lago Mar to anyone...and we will return.

This place is truly the best family resort I've ever seen. It offers pools, beach, playground, 9 hole putting course, shuffle board, ping pong, gym, spa, and more. The staff was excellent and knew your name in a short time. I walked in to check in and the women at the desk said welcome Mr. Gamache. How she knew my name is beyond me. The food here is NOT expensive at all for a resort as other reviewers have stated. I would like to know where they have vacationed before because the prices are below normal resort pricing based upon my extensive travel experiences. For example a lunch of a grouper sandwich and fries $8.50. Chicken sandwich and fries $8.00. You pay this at TGIF for gods sake. The food was not only reasonable it was excellent. Room service was great as well. Average entree price was around $20. Breakfast buffet $12.50, beer $3.90, margarita (excellent by the way) $6.50. Are these prices high? Not by any stretch of the imagination. We had a 1 bedroom super deluxe suite with full kitchen (very small) and full living room. It had 1 and 1/2 bathrooms and a great oceanview from the decent sized balcony, very comfortable for us. Our party included my 2 year old son, wife and mother in law. Next time we'll book further out to get the 2 bedroom, none were available when we booked. I wouldn't recommend this place to the traveling couple or honeymooner ( lots of kids). This place is what it is; simply the best family resort in business today. Grounds are very tropical with lots of flowers and palm trees. Beach is the widest I've seen and very nice. We will return to this place over and over again. It truly allows kids the freedom the enjoy. Be aware that this is a private beach club as well and gets quite busy on the weekends, not a problem for us and the resort was full. Cash is not accepted anywhere, it is all charge to the room. Very nice for those with older kids. They don't always need you to get them something to eat or drink. They just go in and charge it to the room, nice. I honestly can't imagine being dissapointed with this place. Fort Lauderdale is a gem and this place is tops in this area. Head down to Las Olas Blvd. for great shopping, drinking and dining in the wonderful tension free atmosphere in complete safety. The comment I heard over and over from returning families is that they just can't stop coming. One nice family said, "why travel all the way to the Carribean or Hawaii when this place is right here." This place simply offers so much. If anyone has found a place as great as this for families other than Disney, let me know because I'll book tomorrow. Feel free to email with any questions. Oh yeah, why only 4 stars? W felt the overall cleanliness of the resort could be better; this includes room, pools, and public areas. Not dirty just not spotless either. That might be nitpicking, however.

A wonderful vacation

We stayed for four nights, April 12-16 with our 2 children age 6 and 9.
The activities at the hotel for the children included a playground, tennis, mini golf, a chess game, volleyball, 2 pools and some organized activites. The private beach was magnificent. The staff was extremely polite and helpful, and our room was clean and quite large. The breakfast buffet was very good, and the more casual soda shop is great for a quick snack. This hotel is great for young families and I would recommend it highly. Our kids also loved this hotel. I hope we can come back soon!

Relaxing time

We stayed at Lago Mar April 1st-6th in a deluxe 1 bd executive suite.
We got lucky we were on the 4th floor on the end which gave us an ocean view. Our room was nice, very clean and spacious. We spent most of our room time sitting on the outside porch. We really enjoyed our stay there. The pool was great but lots of kids all ages. The beach was wonderful. We ate at the soda shop and the poolside bar which has typical burgers, etc. We thought the food was good. I went to the spa for a facial and really enjoyed it. Overall the staff was helpful. I liked that they never bothered us for anything unless we asked. The one thing we did not care for was the 18% gratuity that was add on to everything: drinks, foods, shakes, spa. You are not allowed to use cash so everything is charged to your room along with 18%. I think 18% is a little much for an ice cream shake this is my only complaint. I would definitely stay there again.

We stayed 2 nights before and one night after taking a carribbean cruise. We would definitely return, the place was lovely, beautiful beach with the added plus of watching the cruise ships (six- eight of them) leaving on Sunday night, and all sorts of other ship traffic go by on other days from a rocky pier a short walk down the beach. Staff was amiable and very helpful. We had a room with 2 double beds for all four of us, for 265 a night. Rooms were large and airy, bathroom a little tight for the four of us. The food was very good, and we much enjoyed the outdoor patio. Children loved the facilities, with hammocks in the sand, minigolf and shuffleboard, all nicely landscaped. Great walks on beach day and night. It was Feb and the ocean was warm and shallow and clear. The food was overpriced, but quite good. Lot of good restaurants in lauderdale - overall a good trip.

bad experience

We recently returned from a vacation here. The hotel did not live up to its reviews. We had a nightmare experience with the hotel and almost missed our flight home. We had an early morning flight and called for the bellhop and car from valet 15-20 minutes prior to our needing to leave. Both never arrived. After getting our luggage downstairs the valet lost our rental car. For almost a 1/2 hour, we all looked throughout the parking lot for the car. I was in a panic and the desk clerk had a very bad attitude about the whole problem.

We also had an attitude problem the night before at dinner. The waiter charged us for the wrong wine at dinner (much higher priced of course!) then told us we were mistaken and called the manager to fight over the bill. Finally they corrected it but they did not win any friends or repeat clientelle.

The room we had would have been nice enough but the plumbing was falling apart. The room stunk, literally! Housekeeping could not remove the smoking smell. They thought it was the adjoining room where the people were smoking 24/7. We kept all the windows open the entire time and the mosquitos came in at night.

The kids did enjoy the facilities but the parents suffered here.

Great for kids

We just returned from a week at Lago Mar. We booked a 2 bedroom suite for $490 a night. The layout was geat, 2 bedrooms with full baths, living room, kitchen, and powder room. The facility was great for the kids because we were able to have breakfast in the room, and I made easy dinners for the kids and ordered room service for my husband and I, so we did not have to worry about sitting in a restaurant with a two year old. Only one of the pools was warm enough to swim in, the other did not seem to be heated. The playground and beach were perfect. The one major weakness of the resort was housekeeping. The room was far from clean, in fact, I dusted the whole place because everytime we touched something it was dirty. In addition, the room was not made up until 3-4 o'clock in the afternoon. Way too late for my taste.

Great Family Vacation

Lago Mar provided a great setting for a family holiday vacation. We spent five days in a pool side one bedroom suite, which was more than ample for two adults and two kids. The sofa bed actually pulled out into separate twin beds--a big hit with the kids!Pools and beach were spectacular for the south Florida coast. Plenty of kids activities, and the Soda Shop was a daily stop.The staff was very helpful and efficient, and kept the entire resort spotless.Only downside was that restaurant was very expensive, especially breakfast.

Top Local Tips for Fort Lauderdale

Take the Boatbus Parking is difficult in Fort Lauderdale. THere is a boat/bus that is a slow but pleasant way to get around if one is not on a tight schedule.

hotels on beach Some hotels are not on the beach ie Yankee Trader/ Clipper you have to cross a foot bridge over a road to get to it and these beaches are public. Lago Mar is only one mile away but has private beach and could be anywhere in the carribean if not better.

Jaxson's Ice Cream & The Floridian Breakfast Make sure you take a trip to nearby Jaxson's Ice Cream in Dania Beach, a 15-minute drive from Lago Mar. Go early! The Floridian breakfast on Las Olas is scrumptious, too.
