Historical Traveller Reviews of Il Lugano Hotel
A very pleasant stay
from VirginIslandsBagpussThe bed was very comfortable, with top quality linens and towels. The staff are trying very hard to please, and as with everything new, there are just a few wrinkles to iron out,( a few more pastries at breakfast to make sure they don't run out) but nothing spoiled our great stay here. A special thanks to our concierge Annie, who helped us make our stay complete.
IL Lugano a nice experience
from annmarkColtsNeckNjWe booked through Hotels.com and got a good rate for the Easter week on a king suite with a balcony overlooking the intracoastal waterway. We were very pleased with the accomodations and the staff. Our mini suite was on the 9th floor and consisted of the most comfortable bed, flat screen plasma tv, fully equiped kitchen with frig and microwave, granite countertops, washer, dryer and a spotless large bathroom. The balcony was oversized and faced the intracoastal waterway, where there is lots of boating activity and beautiful views of the city. The housekeeping staff was great as were the doormen and front desk. The continental breakfast was above average, with fresh fruit, juice, yogurt and the usual assortment of fresh baked pastries and cereal.
Some observations that might help other travelers:
This is not a hotel for kids. There is nothing for them to do.
The hotel is a few blocks from the beach. The "oceanview" side is a distant view and it basically overlooks the parking lot of a strip mall complex that looks like it is in a redevelopment stage.
The pool is small and on the north side of the building, thereby basically out of the sun for most of the day. The neighborhood is residential and the hotel lobby is more like a condominium lobby than a hotel. The bar is tiny and not especially inviting. The restaurant is not open yet. Also, although the website says they are giving "Atlantic Reception" (free drinks and snacks during happy hour) it has been discontinued.
To avoid the $25 per day valet parking fee, park in the lot directly across the street. It's a metered lot but since we were gone most of the day, we only paid less than a dollar daily to park there since it is free after 6PM. The only snag is that the meters begin charging at 8AM so you have to get to the meter by that time or risk a ticket.
We did not take advantage of the complimentary Escalade or their boat, which we did see others using.
Many great restaurants are within a short walk from the hotel or you can take advantage of the free transportation to and from anywhere within a wide radius (they will take you as far south as Las Olas Blvd.)
We would return to this hotel and would recommend it for couples who are not necessarily concerned about staying directly on the beach and would appreciate the fabulous views on the intracoastal side of the building. Also, there is nothing better than a brand new luxury room at a reasonable rate and that is what they are offering during their inaugural season. Once this place catches on, and the restaurant opens, I think the rates will be much higher since the Il Lugano is destined to be a 5 star hotel in the near future!
t stay here
from kefloridat Try And Get In The Escalade!
from CanadaDigbyWe didn't have a car, but assumed the water taxi and escalade would be available to drive us short distances. This assumption was sadly incorrect. In fact, there was every excuse in the book not to provide this service. Because the Il Lugano is a bit out of the hub, the hotel advertised this service to accommodate their customers. Our taxi driver told us this is a common complaint from the people he picks up at the Il Lugano.
I was also surprised when I asked to cash a $100 travellers cheque in exchange for money to pay for my taxi, and the staff said no, because they wanted to leave their cash in the drawer and that we could walk to an ATM 2 blocks away!
The staff is a bit flaky, but this may be growing pains, as they just opened in January. This hotel has the potential to be a great spot to stay, but they just need to provide the advertised servcies already!
Excellent on the Surface, Lackng Within
from amanduh4470CONS: flaky staff; disrespectful towards young people; far location from downtown; pool nice, but 99% in the shade 24-hrs of the day
For the most part, I enjoyed my stay here, but too many negative issues occurred that could persuade me to stay here again. Overall, there was a lack of respect towards my guest and I. Like any other guest, I am a paying guest who deserves equal respect, regardless of my younger age. I witnessed the way older residents and families were treated, and after close comparison, I feel I was treated with far less respect.
For the success of this establishment and the pleasant accommodations of future guests, I hope the il Lugano gets its act together.
Il Lugano, a lovely place to stay for anyone!
from vtfamily4Everyone who works there was very helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to help us, and not in a "I want a big tip" kind of way." They seemed to get a kick out of our babies, and made a point to pay attention to them and help us with them.
I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Ft. Lauderdale!
Looks like a condo but its not
from jbwlsnBeautiful new hotel
from mellieannComplimentary breakfast and evening wine and cheese were on 6th floor suite with intracoastal view - I enjoyed this best, sitting outside on the balcony. We didnt make use of the Cadillac Escalades, boat, pool or hot tub or the fitness room but they all looked top notch. Valet parking was $25 per day, room was an American Express card deal/steal for $239.
Only glitch was that the room was not 100% clean when we arrived, there was a cleaning cloth left on a sidetable and the dish washer had dirty dishes in it. The level of music playing in the sound system seemed a tad loud for us sometimes but maybe it was due to the lack of other noise, very few guests around at any time and we almost never shared the elevator with anyone else! I'm sure that will change with time when word gets out.
Great new hotel
from MsmikeyThe pool is a bit small and in a shady area beside the property, but they overcome this problem by having the pool heated which was a nice touch.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and were very eager to make our stay enjoyable. There was even a free evening wine/cheese reception in one of the suites. Which was very nice watching the sunset.
The only problem with this property is the location. It sits on a beautiful spot, however, it is a bit far from most of the activities on Fort Lauderdale beach, or downtown (Las Olas area), making taxis a necessity. Also, there is not much in the immediate area to do...so again you need to go further afield to find any kind of night life or restaurant choices with atmosphere.
The other thing is that the valet parking is spectacularly overpriced...it was $30 a day, and it seemed like we were the only people in the hotel! I know that the other hotels in the area charge this, but they are in a much busier part of the beach area...and not sitting in what is essentially an empty shopping centre, with tons of parking!
Having said those things...I feel the hotel is great! I am originally from the area...so I knew how to get around relatively easily...but if you're new or just visiting, it may be a bit in the wrong area.
But definitely take advantage of the opening specials, as it is a bargain!
As it is a mixed use property, condo/hotel...I can see the residence part taking off more than the hotel for some reason. It is just stunning inside and I would even love one! But for a hotel, I think it'll have stiff competition from the others on the beach.
Hopefully not, as the staff and hotel are wonderful
Loved Il Lugano!! A Gem in Fort Lauderdale!
from djackson1908Top Local Tips for Fort Lauderdale
Family Friendly Restaurants The best places we found for eating with babies: California Pizza Kitchen! We also looked online to see if restaurants in walking distance had take out. The concierge said they didn't, but places like Grandma's French Cafe did. The breakfast at the hotel was wonderful. We miss the fresh fruit now that we are home!
Las Olas Blvd Las Olas Blvd is an absolutely beautiful part of the city and offers so many choices for restaurants, bars, cafes, art galleries, and sweet shops! A definite must do when in Ft Lauderdale
A little out of the way The Seminole indian reservation is about an hour from il Laguno. Its a pretty straight shot down interstates to Big Cypress. If you like history & outdoor tours, you would love this place. They have a museum with a 1.5 mile boardwalk through the everglades. Beautiful area! Down the road from museum is Billy's swamp safari (about 3 miles) where you can see alligators, bison, ostrich, deer, bear, panthers, & wild boar. You can ride the airboats,(you may get lucky & get Andrew as your driver!) He is a great guide!! (Ask him about his tiger). Then on to the swamp buggies where Andrew's dad MAY be your guide here. (There are several guides at each stations) Jessie is VERY knowledgeable to the Seminole ways & animals of the area. This make take a few extra minutes to traves but it is WELL worth your time & not very expensive!
