Loved the pet-friendly Shores Resort

from weezrows
We visited the pet-friendly Shores Resort and Spa and had an outstanding visit. We had to cancel our first night at the last moment (7pm) and were not charged. We arrived the next morning at 9 am and the receptionist not only checked us in early, but we also received a free upgrade to a ocean front with balcony room! Everything in the room was luxurious-- tile/marble bath, waterfall showerhead, spa toiletries, flat screen TV, king pillowtop mattress with light down comforter, large balcony, soothing colors....

My husband and I are early risers and were brought coffee and a light breakfast to go from the kitchen to take to the beach for our sunrise walks. Our dog, an australian shepherd, was welcome in the outside restaurant/pool area and was cheerfully greeted by the staff. There were very nice touches in the pool area-- a firepit, cabannas, sandy seating areas. All in all, a very relaxing, invigorating stay. I can't wait to return.

Stylish Hotel, but Terrible Service.

from SunDollyOz
The Shores Resort and Spa is close to a top hotel, but definitely not there yet. It has the foundation, but we had a lot of problems with service. We were there for my birthday, and we really tried to make the best of it, but there was just one thing after another. The staff needs a desperate course in hospitality 101. We spent about $800 for a one night stay in Daytona Beach. We don't mind spending that, but we have certain expectations. They were not met at this resort.
CHECK-IN: We stayed at the resort on May 7, 2006 Sunday for one night. Our rate was $199 for an ocean front king with balcony. We paid the extra for an ocean view. Our first rough spot was the valet service. It was really ununual because usually the bell staff is all over you, but we had a hard time getting assistance. We carried our luggage up to our room ourselves. The lobby was elegant, and the check in staff was friendly. My husband was disappointed because he made numerous calls to have champagne and strawberries in the room upon arrival. They weren't in the room, and they were delivered after arrival.
ROOM: We booked a non-smoking room, but our first room smelled strongly of smoke. There was also a big stain on the wall and on the carpet. We were moved to room 811 which had a nice view. The rooms were nicely decorated and comfortable. The large plasma TV was also a great touch.
SPA: I had two appointments at the spa... the tropical facial and the hot stone pedicure. The spa was really beautiful. The staff there was friendly and attentive.
BAR SERVICE: There is a great tiki bar and outdoor firepit. It's a very relaxing, tropical setting. The service at the bar was very slow. We had lunch there and waited for one hour for 2 sandwiches.
BALEEN: We ate dinner at the restaurant. Our bill for two was $200. The food was OK, but the service just wasn't up to par. We just expected more for what we paid. The next morning, there was only decaf coffee in the room. The delivery hadn't come in for regular coffee. We ordered room service, but they said it would be 45 minutes to an hour. We decided to go to Baleen again since the view was really nice. It was fairly empty when we arrived. We immediatly ordered coffee and breakfast. We joked how we really needed coffee and didn't want to wait for room service. We waited for at least 20 minutes with no coffee (or any contact with our waiter). We watched the tables fill up and people get served. My husband finally asked another waiter for coffee, but no one would help. We finally decided to leave. A manager saw us leave and asked what was wrong. He got us coffee. Our food was ready by that point, so he had us sit at another table. The same waiter brought our food. He was unbelievably rude and condescending. We were speechless. He said that sometimes coffee has to be brewed and it takes some time. (What about everyone else, and last I checked orange juice and water doesn't have to be brewed). Just basic 101 would be to apologize, but he made us very uncomfortable. I didn't even eat. Then, he had the nerve to bring the entire bill (including the coffee). I mentioned it to the manager, and he removed it from the bill.
VALET: Just a tip. If you are going to pay $9 per day for valet, just know that your car is not in a covered area. Our car was brought to us covered (and I mean covered) in bird crap (I don't know what else to nicely call it!) When we mentioned it to the front desk, we were told that they can't control the sky. We didn't want it taken off the bill, but it certainly wasn't offered, and once again, no apology.
We really wanted to have a good time, but we left disappointed.

A completely renovated facility

from JeffDianne
Forget the reviews prior to the renvoation. This is a fine hotel. It could very easily stand up to facilities located down around Sanibel or Naples, Florida along the West Coast The rooms are bright, clean and appealing. The lobby, bar dining room are all well done, open and spacious. The pool area is large and comfortable and despite it being April outdoor music play constantly, waitstaff worked the outside areas and the hotel had a summer time atmosphere. This is a nice facility. If you are heading this way do not be disuaded by the older reviews. The more recent reviews are a more accurate reflection of the facility. The hotel did exhibit some growing pains but they were very small and once alerted to them the staff reacted quickly and professionally.

Beautiful!

from Traveling-a-little
My husband and I went to The Shores and fell in love with it. The feather beds were wonderful - wanted to bring the king bed home. The patio outside by the beach was remarkable. One night is was chilly and we went to sit by the fire ring and someone was playing the trumpet while sitting in the shadows. Talk about romantic! However, the trumpet player wasn't there everynight. (Not sure if it was a guest playing or if they hired someone to provide that.) We had great service from the time we checked in until we left. However, the pool was suppose to be heated and it wasn't. I was a little disappointed in that because in April the water is cold. No need to bring beach/pool towels, they provide those at no cost to guests. The attendents walked around the pool/patio area and check to see if you wanted a drink or something to eat off the menu. Very nice when one is laying there in the wonderful sun, all comfortable and doesn't want to get up and get something. I didn't get to try the spa - too expensive. The maid service was twice a day. Once in morning and again in the evening to turn the bed down and tidy up. She filled our ice bucket at that time too. Always had clean towels and a clean room. My husband used the fitness center everyday and enjoyed it. They provided valet parking, but we chose to park the car ourselves in their parking lot across the street. They have a covered walkway to get to it. We can't wait to go back. Hope they will be able to live up to our expectations again.

Fantastic!

From the moment I walked in, I felt like a celebrity. The rooms were amazing, feather beds and great views and the worlds most comfortable robes. The spa was a great experience as well.

Savor the view, not the restaurant

from kimmer54
We are essentially "locals" in Central Florida and wanted a one-night getaway over the long MLK weekend, so we booked Sunday night at the Shores Resort and Spa in Daytona. Our room on the tenth floor was magnificent, despite the fact that we went for the cheaper rate, not the ocean view. From our northern facing room we had good views of both the ocean's sunrise and the intercoastal's sunset. The room was filled with all of the usual amenities one would expect in a five star, but the shower and the bath supplies were especially sensuous with a rain-style shower head and tropical soaps/lotions. the room was spacious and comfortable, complete with a 42" plasma tv and Italian linens.
The spa was pricy, but worth it when compared to similar treatments and the service was attentive as it was competent.
The lobby is beautiful and the bar both hip and comfortable, with a fire pit outside for those "chilly" Florida nights.
The only downside was the Baleen Restaurant which suffered from everything from poor communication (messed up reservations; not knowing about specials) to slow service, miniscule sized crab cake entrees, and truly mediocre food. Considering the hype and the cost, it was very disappointing.
We'll go back to the resort, hope for a similar room and I'll certainly enjoy another spa treatment, but we'll sample one of the other local restaurants and pass on the Baleen till things improve.

Nice view, but thats about it

We decided to spend Christmas at the Shores. We knew Daytona would be pretty quiet, and really just wanted a change in scenery.

When first arriving at the hotel, it was lovely. I loved the main hall. Our room was fine, although getting two queen sized beds wasn't the best idea. We couldn't sit and watch TV comfortably from one bed. They have bed posts that block your view, not to mention they hid all of the remotes. We had to call down twice.

We also observed there were no more than 5 families in this large hotel. There was no incentives given to upgrade or anything. That kind of surprised us, but we chalked it up to a lage hotel without much ability to be flexible and accommodating.

I believe the best part of this hotel (not the $5 I paid for a cup of tea!) was the patio. Many different options of seating, beach chairs, comfy sack-like couches & chairs, adirondaks around a fire pit (they light it every night) and a little cabana to lounge in. A nice pool, kiddie pool & hot tub. Loved that part of the resort.

One thing we did not try was the spa, i wanted to experience it, however I could get a pedicure here for $30 while the spa treatment was $60. No thanks, I enjoy my 1/2 priced pedicure at home anyway.

Overall, we got what we wnated, a quiet getaway. We were not really impressed, and probably only would return because we know what we are getting. most likely won't return though.

t miss the opportunity to stay here!

This was an overall fabulous experience, the rooms, beds, food, location are all top of the line. The staff were so helpful and friendly - no lineups for check-in!

If you have a choice in Daytona - this should be the one!

All style, no substance

I have stayed there a few times on business in the past months. It has undergone a major recent renovation. The lobby/bar/patio area is beautiful and inviting, and the beds are comfortable. That's where my compliments end. The staff is awkward and doesn't seem to be well-trained. The rooms have many minor problems -- on my last stay my room had a cracked tile in the shower, splintery screw holes in the closet shelf, and scratches and smudges in the paint on my bed. The food is expensive and not great. There seems to be too much concern with projecting the "image" of a high-end place and not enough attention to the details that would make this place really first-rate.

Great new look!

We decided to have a weekend beach getaway at the last minute. Had stayed here a few years ago when it was the Hilton. What a difference the renovation made! Valet and front desk greeted us with a smile and warm welcome. The valet guy even radioed our name to the front desk so they already had our room information ready when we went to check in. Lobby is very inviting with dark wood and overstuffed furniture. New restaurant Baleen was excellent and they have a nice patio with great views of the ocean. Our room was comfortable and spacious and the new plasma tv's with DVD players are really nice! Be sure to ask for a room with a balcony because not every room has one and it was nice to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. A little pricier than most places in Daytona, but we thought it was worth it. Also, the Shores neighborhood is quieter with a nicer beach than up the road in the main touristy part of Daytona Beach.
