We stayed at the la playa aka the roach motel for 14 nights in Sept 08 and I wouldn't go within a mile of the place again. The rooms smelled musty the carpets where shabby and wet from a leek and the bath room and kitchenette where crawling in filth I can only say nice things about the staff who seemed to be fighting a losing battle but remained friendly and helpful.

They didn't have our room done in time. We had to wait an hour. We didn't have pillows, blankets, or towels. They were not prepared for the teams that stayed there during nationals. The rooms were GROSS!!!! Our coach called front desk to ask about the towels and the lady told her that if we wanted towels we would have to come down and get them ourselves and then hung up on my coach! So I went down there to confront her and she told me that "it was just a suggestion". We were not alone, our last day there... there was a line of people complaining about the horrible service. We were better off to stay in motel 8. It was a good thing I was in Daytona FL and our team won nationals, because I would have been real pissed if I were any place else.

Just AWFUL service

I had my wedding and reception here. The catering manager is awful, she made a lot of promises she didn't keep. They didn't serve enough food at my reception, (even though we were assured it would be more than enough to feed 150 people, and we only had about 100 eating) we ran out of food, and the chef and catering manager had left a long time before that. And the food was awful anyway. We were left to fend for ourselves. When we bought food from Olive Garden, they freaked out, and both the chef and the catering manager returned only to scream at my parents and guests. Actually shoved the groom's cousin during the argument. The whole thing was embarrassing. Servers were making rude comments. No refills for drinks, no coffee, and never served the cake, just left it all on the cake table. Some tables weren't bussed. They even opened one of my wedding cards, thank goodness there was a check in it; if it was cash it would have been gone. Plus, the rooms were musty, and they had wet paint throughout the whole building. This place is awful and I'll never come back. The manager will not say sorry or offer any form of compensation- after all, his wife was the rudest waitress of the night. Guess that's why family shouldn't work together, it causes biased opinions.

The room is big and old. Needs serious renovation

This hotel is old and in need of major renovation. We're staying in a pretty big room with 4 beds if you count the Murphy bed and the pullout. Check-in was fast and we were in our room within 10 minutes. The room has so many problems I can't even begin to tell you about all of them. You'll see the pictures when I get a chance to upload them all. The rest of the hotel (lobby, pool area etc) looks ok from a distance but I haven't used them yet.

We get to the room and my wife immediately pulled back the covers to discover stained sheets. We had them changed and advised housekeeping to throw it away if they can't get it clean. The closet doors were off track and we had them fix it. We left the room and when we came back our patio door was wide open. I closed it tight but somehow it came open. I locked the doorknob but didn't realize the deadbolt needed to turned also. Like I said, the room is spacious but truly a mess and badly in need of renovation. We're attending a family reunion here so that's why we're at this dump. I wouldn't recommend this hotel until they do a complete renovation.

One reviewer stated she didn't see the problems everyone else has. Look for the pictures after Aug 6 and you'll see for yourself.

Major Dissapointment!!!!!!

This is the first and the last time I will stay at this place. When we got to the hotel to register we were assigned a room that someone was already staying in which was very alarming to the family we walked in on , as well as embarrassing to us. When I went back to the front desk to report the problem I was issued another room key which was the exact same room I was given the first time. The manager finally corrected the problem and gave me an upgrade from oceanview to an oceanfront, which was good" PR" on their part. The room was nothing like you see advertised, it was dark, the carpet was dirty, you had to keep shoes on to keep your feet clean, there were some holes in the walls and there were some wires sticking fron under the air conditioner. We had a separate kitchen that had a door joined the room next door, it reeked of cigarette smoke from the people in that room. I had to turn on the hood range over the stove to help filter the odor,keep spraying room spray and keep the door from my side to be able to breath in there. the air conditioner did not keep the room cool day or night. The parking was a nightmare, we had to park in a lot at the motel next door and on Saturday when we returned to the hotel we were informed we would have to wait until midnight to park anywhere by the place unless we wanted to park across the street in the shopping center and walk across four lanes of traffic to get to our room.This was because of the Comedy Club that is open on Friday and Saturday nights.I do not understand why do your paying guest which are being overcharged to start with have to accommodate the patrons of the Comedy Club??? Besides there was a boat that took up at least 4 spaces and some spaces were packed with junk that could be used for guest parking. One of our guest was from out of town and did not even have a vehicle because they were picked up from the airport . Why is there a shortage of parking spaces for the number of rooms?
I booked 4 rooms at the La Playa because my son got married on the beach Friday night, this was a special event for our family, one of which we did not need the added aggravation of what we had to deal with from this hotel. Some of our out of town guest were treated rudely by the housekeeping service and could not get clean towels for their room. Yes ,you can see our stay was very disappointing any I will not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

Do not reccomend this place at all. It is nothing like they show on the internet. The rooms are small, worn and need renovation. Carpet was worn and torn. Kitchen is poorly equipped. Maid service is terrible. Did not clean the room, made only one bed and did not leave clean towels. We had to call for clean towels. We heard other guests complain of dirty bathrooms and no towels. I don't know how this is a resort. It is just an almost average hotel. Pool was nice, but that's about it. They have no amenities of a resort. Will certainly not stay there during future trips to Daytona Beach.

I was truly disappointed with the LaPlaya. I had a great stay there last summer and couldn't wait to return this year. I love everything about this hotel except the housekeeping/towel debacle we endured this summer:

First, they overbooked the hotel. We had 6 people staying in our room and I booked a double suite. When I got there, they gave us a king suite, which could only sleep 4. Very frustrating. Luckily there was someone else in our group that did get a double suite that could make do with the king suite and we traded rooms. However, if I hadn't been so lucky what would I have done?

Secondly, the towel/housekeeping situation was a nightmare. We had clean towels/washcloths in our room on Monday when we checked in and every day after that was a fight to get towels. We only received washcloths one other day. When we would call to beg for towels, they would send 4 towels and 6 HAND TOWELS. The last two days of our stay, we did not see housekeeping at all and we didn't receive any towels until 6:30 in the evening on our final day (and those were brought to us personally by a manager, not housekeeping). Completely ruined our dinner plans.

Everytime we called down about towels we got a sob story about how the hotel was so booked and they couldn't keep up. DON'T OVERBOOK. At one point, we had two days of dirty towels in our rooms. GET HOUSEKEEPING TO PICK THEM UP SO THEY CAN BE WASHED. We didn't see a housekeeper the last two days.

Loved the La Playa

We stayed at the La Playa from May 31 to June 12. We had a ground floor suite and loved it. The staff was accomodating, room clean and nicely decorated. Pool deck and tiki bar awesome. Wonderful place to stay. I see bad reviews and just don't get it. This is a great place to stay.

First, I do not normally complain but people need to know about this place.
We booked a very expensive suite ($189 a night) - several things were broken (closet door, balcony railings on 8th floor!, curtain rods) and missing (pillows for bed, silverware ( 3 forks and 2 knives, plates in the kitchen) 2 dining room chairs). This is a suite for 4 people. There were coach roaches - we killed two big ones and I found roach dropping in the kitchen. The bathroom was just big enough to turn around in. Parking cost s an extra $5 a night.
I complained the first day to the management and was told housekeeping would come immediately.
No one ever came despite several calls and personal requests.
Daytona Beach hotels are known for being ratty but I had expected something better for the price. I made a written complaint to the hotel but so far (4 weeks) have not heard from them.

Everyone should stay here

Staying at this resort was a last minute thing for myself and 2 friends. The girls at the front desk were amazingly helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and very clean. However, the first night our air conditioner took on a life force of it's own and decided to die on us. So Sal, their "Johnny on the spot" maintenence guy was there right away to give us another one. (He only chuckled under his breath when we told him that it really must've burnt up bad because it really smelled like smoke outside.......ummm, the smoke is from the forest fires. OOPS.) And the second time we called him our safe wouldn't close. He was there in less than 3 minutes. Did I mention 3 girls stuffing things into a small space could block a lock??

So 3 happy girls head for the pool. Right away Melissa (entertainment pool coordinator and "stay off the line" guard) came over to us and had us playing beach chair bingo and trivia games. She is also a wealth of information on the area, from turtles hatching to Daytona's birth of speed to the rip tides. Right after meeting her we of course met Beth and Shane......the wonderful pool bartenders. Beth makes a great bucket.....yes, bucket, of Voodoo juice. (A personal favorite of mine) And Shane, he makes a great.......snowball. They land perfectly on your back to cool you off. he he (he did this with our permission) On Fri and Sat's they have a dj poolside.....Kyle. He's pretty fun and once you let him know that you are a music buff and can guess any 80's tune, he puts you to the test. (I passed)

Everyone we ran into that worked at this resort was so very helpful, friendly, and courteous. The maid left us extra towels and coffee when asked. The pool maintenece man was even fun. It was wonderful to know that each day you came to find your pool chair that your area would be free of trash, sand and debris.

We would be happy to have another girls' trip, or family trip to this resort again.

Rats Come Out at Night..

We finished our spring break in Daytona. Calling around at the last minute I found other hotels at better rates but due to the fact it was the last minute and the amount of people traveling I decided to go spend the last night with LaPlaya. According to the reservations department they were able to accommodate my family in the Deluxe Suite. We arrived to the hotel at 5:00 PM - first no reservation for a Deluxe Suite instead we had paid $189.00 for efficiency. After talking to management of what I requested (while traveling with 4 kids and 3 adults), he was able to accommodate me with 2 studios. Same floor, but down the hall, around the corner, in the curve!!! Fine. At this time we are tired from Orlando and the Beach we just need rest. The room at 5:30 by this time is not ready... He finally managed to find one room ready and we had to wait on the second room... I'm thinking.. It's almost bed time and we have to wait!!! Anyway we decided to utilize the one room for now, go to dinner and come back to the second room. After we put the kids and Grandma to bed, we took a walk on the beach.. Nice... came back to our room around 1:30AM went to bed, heard this noise of paper .. My husband asked "what are you eating in the bed?" I said, “I thought that was you!" I jumped up and turned the light on and Lord and behold a "RAT" eating from the cheese and pretzel wrapper.

To say the least.. The staff was short and did not actively want to assist. Had to keep asking for things. Informed the front desk of the Rats.

So if you go, don't have snacks if you don't bring extra for the pets... I love Daytona but I will not pay $189.00 to sleep with RATS.

Not totally terrible but not great

I stayed at the LaPlaya with a friend and our kids. We requested a ground floor room because my friend is handicapped. They gave us a room on the 3rd floor which required parking in the garage and walking down a small flight of steps. We asked for no steps. The room wasnt completely clean but not terrible. The bathroom wasnt very clean at all. The small fridge and microwave were disgusting. We had a roach the size of a hummingbird crawling on our drapes. We never got enough towels for 4 of us to take showers daily. We had to call for assitance for the roach. Call for assistance for more towels daily. The elevators are so slow that another member of your party can go up or down the steps in less time than you can on the elevator. The best elevator is near the lobby and they dont allow you to use that one. There is always a crowd waiting downstairs to use the elevator. The "non smoking" rooms smell like smoke.

My stay at the La Playa during July 2006 was not a very nice one. To start off when my family and I booked a room we requested that it be non smoking and on the 4th or 5th floor and away from the pool. Also we requested an early check in. When we got to the hotel they told us that we were in a smoking room and on the 3rd floor and that the room was not going to be ready for a couple of hours. When we got up to the room we were expected full renovation like they said. We entered the room and it looked almost nothing had changed. The carpets were filthy, the shower head had mold and sounded weird. Also you basically had to slam the door to make sure it locked because if you just pulled it wouldn't lock. The pool tasted like sweat and was murky. Also one jacuzzi was not working. The maids also did not come all the time. We had to make the bed every day except for once. We also called for maintenance to give us lightbulb because one was not working when we got there and they never came. Also the air conditioner would shut off periodically all night long for a minute and would wake you up out of a dead sleep. The reason for this is because the new owners switched to energy saving air conditioners. With all that being said my family and I will never stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Daytona Beach

Ocean Deck Bar/Restaurant Do NOT eat here. The food is horrible! As we were leaving, at least 2 other tables that had left were commenting on the same thing. The valet parking is nice and the guys that run it are very nice. The bar downstairs is fun.....if you like drunk people around you in the afternoon until night. If you are looking for a "meat market" party atmosphere then go here.

Daytona is for spring break Daytona is not a family friendly area. With cars and vehicles going up and down the beach, you have to constantly watch out for your little ones. Also due to the spring break "visitors", many of the hotels are rundown and in disrepair. Most of the attractions are out of town like Cape Canaveral and St. Augustine. Not a lot to do except swim and go to the cinema. It is an hour away from Orlando which is one of its only drawing points. My daughter lives here and that is the only reason we come. The west coast of Florida is, in my opinion, much nicer.

Daytona Beach Daytona Beach is a beautiful place, I think this is a fun place for a family get-a-way.
