One Ocean sucked

from slim8274
I would have to call this hotel a polished terd. It was recently remodeled which was nice but there staff sucks. We stayed for a wedding 2 years ago and, although the hotel wasnt remodeled, the staff was much nicer. We remember drinking at the front door laughing with the valet guys, but this time these valet were completely rude. The front desk people couldnt even tell me about the area at all its like they were from another country. The bellman that brought our luggage up didnt talk much and had terrible body odor. After being in the room for a while i found a dirty baby diaper under my bed. Housekeeping rarely came but when they did it was like 830 am. The only thing we really enjoyed was the beach but the hotel charged more for beach chairs then the chairs were even worth. My suggestion is go a little north to the ritz or you can go a little south to ponde vedra inn.

Nice place

from justsomeone
This is an old hotel that was recently gutted and they did a terrific job. The lobby and rooms are very nice, marble everywhere, flat screen TVs and refrigerator in the room, great bed, etc. There were a few minor annoyances, like no ATM and no business center. They say it's coming, but for now, you have to go to the library if you need to print out something. Also, beware the extra charges. Expedia didn't mention the parking and resort fees ($15 and $25 a night), nor did the clerk at the check-in counter. Otherwise, the staff were great and the price certainly was right. Bottom line: I would definitely recommend this place to a friend or relative.

OK but not great for money

from alhearn
One Ocean Resort, as a hotel, is understated elegance on the surface but just another hotel underneath. Rooms are small and cramped, especially the bathrooms. Rooms were clean and neat with large-screen TVs. Mini-bar was stocked at first, but multiple calls were needed to get it restocked, as part of their $25/day "resort fee." This was a major annoyance to us.

Staff was polite in a cold business kind of way, but not especially personable. Staff was slow to address requests. Since there are no ice machines, the staff must be called when needed. There were no telephone books in the room, no list of restaurants nearby. They want you to call them for everything.

Valet parking appeared to be mandatory. They never mentioned the self-park lot next door. Parking is $15/day.

Elevators to rooms and pool are strangely located only on second floor, up an awkward flight of marble stairs. It was a hard climb after a day of walking and sightseeing.

As a "resort", One Ocen is terribly lacking. Other than the spa, a rather small swimming pool and deck, and public beach access, there's not much "resort" to it. The property is very small.

Fortunately, the hotel is located in Atlantic Beach/Neptune Beach which is a wonderful little area of shops, restaurants, bars, and lots of interesting people -- all just outside the hotel doors.

Overall, One Ocean is a very good but not great hotel, and is very lacking as a resort. It is a bit overpriced for what you get. Although our experience was generally positive, next time to Jacksonville, we'll stick with a hotel that is a better value for our money.

Already planning to go back

from jcokin1
I stayed at the One Ocean Hotel and Spa and it was hands down one of the best experiences that I have ever had.

The staff were extremely friendly and the rooms were exquisite.
They provided top of the line amenities; large flat panel TV, an alarm clock that hooks up to you iPOD, refrigerator, etc. The showers are full of H20 Spa products (this is some expensive stuff). The view from the beach could not be beat! The food from the restaurant was 5 stars.

Highly recommend the spa and the top of the line massages that they provide.

All and all I am already planning to visit my friend in Florida again and will be staying at the One Ocean Hotel and Spa.

Great Property, average people

from RetiredCouple2
From their website, One Ocean looks like a promising resort. However, behind the "upscale" facade, there were some serious problems. From the front door to the front desk, things went smoothly enough, but once in our rooms we were quite disappointed. Our "amenities" weren't stocked--though we had already paid for them--and our bellman told us, "Just call One Touch and the docent will bring them right up to you." One what? Apparently there is a button on the phone that will magically get you anything and everything you need while you are there, should you be lucky enough to actually get through. One Touch rarely ever picks up the phone, making it nearly impossible to get simple things like ice (there are no ice machines anywhere). Oh, and the docent--a new term to us--was even more elusive. When we met our docent, she introduced herself with the biggest, most unnatural and forced smile we have ever seen. Is it really that hard to be genuinely friendly? Every interaction with her--and there were few--felt cold and callous. With our every request (like ice) she gave a big fake smile, but her eyes sarcastically said, "sure, whatever you say." And no action was taken. Twice we had to call down to the front desk to complain about how long we had to wait for ice. If it weren't for some of those front desk people, One Ocean would have gotten a begrudgingly deserved one star. Our recommendation--go a few blocks south, to Ponte Vedra Lodge and Club, where they know service, and how to be genuine with guests.

Nice place Great location Spa NEEDS HELP!

from iLike2Go2NicePlaces
It appears that they are attempting to "fix" a lot of the problems mentioned by a previous reviewer. This is a nice property (I'll try to post lots of pictures) and the staff did seem friendly, especially the crew in the back bar :-). The rooms are a little small. I highly suggest getting a corner room because from the outside it looks as if the non-corner rooms are even smaller... not positive on this though. A LOT of detail and thought went into this remodel and it shows, even down to the do not disturb (there is a switch to change a light rather than a door tag). The material behind the beds is an Italian Stucco -- beautiful! Apart from the bar crew, we didn't have too much interaction with the staff, so I can't share too much info about that. My overall feeling I got from them was that they are friendly but they don't make it a priority to make sure you're taken care of. To correct the earlier review -- you can get food buy the pool. They were correct about the pool being all shade (except for a sliver) by about 2:30. The hotel was in their "Soft-Open" so I think they are still working out the bugs. I doubt this will ever be a 4-5 star place but still very nice! The location was awesome. With tons of shopping and restaurants!

I can't figure out what happened with the spa!!!! It's like someone said -- oh wait! we need a spa here too! TERRIBLE SET UP!!! Although the massage was good (80 minute couples) everything else wasn't. It's too bad too. The massage room was oceanside, floor to ceiling windows and NO CURTAINS -- nothing to block out the sun. The rooms need to be darker and REDONE! And yes although they're tinted windows people can see you from the pool if you walk up by the windows (same in the "waiting area"). Very "cold" feeling rooms - if I remember correctly -- all white with pedicure equipment shoved to the corner. The Spa was obviously not thought out well AT ALL. This is what needs the most help. We waited about 5 minutes before anyone came to the desk to check us in. The woman's locker room was not open yet, so we had to wait for the "all clear" before we could both go into change, same after the massage. I was left with the whole "NEXT!" syndrome -- crank 'em in crank 'em out attitude. Hopefully they can get THESE problems fixed, but I can't see them making the Spa feel like more like a peaceful spa that one would expect.

Amazing Hotel

This property is truly breath taking. The service was fantastic. The restaurant amazing. Definitely a 5 star hotel.

A wonderful, charming South Beach-like hotel!

from staynshape
As a seasoned ,discernable business and pleasure traveler of Floridian hotels, I am pleased that I chose to celebrate my mother’s 74th birthday at this newly redesigned South Beach-like boutique hotel.

Based, on my skepetism to stay here based on the prior reviews, I planned a spa visit to Ritz Carleton Amelia Island to ensure a day of pamering for my mother. However, on the day of our arrival, the spa at One Ocean opened and therefore, I cancelled the Ritz. Happily, my mother was treated like a queen as all treatments we requested were available, (but not all services were offered yet).

In response to the reviews about the complaints of others- i.e. unaccessable sunlight at the pool after 2:30 and two small elevators- only so much can be done with an existing structure. So, if small elevators and bathrooms are an issue and you wish to fry your skin from sunrise to sunset, stay elsewhere. Incidently, food service and drinks were available at the pool :) as well as a decent workout facility- including freeweights, eliptical and treadmills.

One should not pass-up the fabulous restaurant of One Ocean, but many great restaurants and stores within walking distance as well.

It is a lovely boutique hotel that is quaint and not overly resort-like affording beauty ambiance, great attentive staff who are eager to please in every possible way.

It had Pros and Cons

from Fulloffaithtina
MY boyfriend and I stayed here for our one year anniv. We arrived and vallet parking was quick to take the car. Vallet was nice becuase the door man took our stuff quickly and brought us to the front desk to check in, but vallet is not optional and you are charged for it on top of tipping everytime you need to pick up your car and drop it off(valet parking is over rated and should be optional) But i dont think they had much parking so thats there way of taking your car and the stress of finding a parking spot for you.

We go in and it took us a few minutes to get checked in the guy at the front desk liked to pretend like he was listneing and going to do everything in the world for your stay but we find out later on he actually almost cost us our dinner reservations and spa treatments, the door man took our stuff to our room for us , and explained everything for us how you do get unlimitted drinks that you dont have to pay for in your mini fridge and if you want coffe or ice or anything just page the customer service... that was nice.

We leave for dinner(pay vallet and tip them to get car and come back) we actually went to a great bbq place out of florida called Sonnys if you ever get the chance to eat there DO! itss amazing!Come back and tip the guy to take our car and ask the front desk about our reservations to make sure and the guy acted like he was on top of things and then we went upstairs and called downstairs to get some cokes and to check on our spa treatments that the front desk was supposed to have and GUESS WHAT the guy diddnt do anything so the spa was supposed to call us and they didnt, and they NEVER brought us our cokes that they offer... They offer alot of promises but deffiantly dont follow through.

As for the room it was great! small but nice, decorations were great, we got a ocean front king bed but the window doesnt open so its just a view.... bathroom was SOOOO SMALL but decorated nice shower was so nice they have a double headed shower just nno tub at all.

found out the next morning when we came down for our spa treatments they hadnt been arranged and it almost cost us our spa treatments? but the lady at the desk insisted that she will get it taken care of and we have a treatment at 3 well we come at 3 and she didnt get what she was suposed to taken care of but we ended up getting the treatment anyways.. after waisting half our day when we already had plans for the day...

While waiting on the spa we went down by the pool, that was really nice they had canopys and plenty of chairs and things to lay out on they brought us fruit no charge always nice, and you could order food and drinks if youd like!

beach is walking distance always nice, we left and came back after eating lunch for our WONDERFUL SPA TREATMENTS! they are over priced but it was very nice none the less!

Checked on our reservations for dinner since they had failed to do everything else that we asked for.. and sure enough we had NO reservations and the resturant suppos couldnt hold anyone else for dinner but the lady did get it worked out and they got us in for dinner thank goodness. Dinner was great! i had the scallops and he had some chicken the service was nice always kept us up with water...

Asked for cokes again that night and they actually did bring them to us but we had to express how mnuch they werent doing their job every other time before that to get anything done.

All in all the stay was nice, service pretends to be nice and helpful but if anything they made a nice stay stressful..
i suggest actually really ttraining them to do their job rather than pretend!

But have a great stay its worth the money!

no 5 stars in the near future

from kyreview4u
Our ocean front room was nice with comfortable bedding, although the bathroom was tiny (i.e., can not stand in front of mirror and still have door open). Hotel was very nicely decorated with a great seating area on terrace off of bar. However, there were many problems with our recent stay including $15./day valet parking (not optional, lot is only steps from front door), a ghost of a "docent" who never offered any services (including unpacking/steaming clothes, offering coffee, etc. as advertised), maid banging on our door at 8:30 AM on saturday to clean our room, room not clean on 2 of 5 days, pool shadowed by building by 2:30 everyday, $70. daily fee to rent beach chairs, no bottles of water offered at the pool, no food at the pool, $25. daily resort fee for newspapers that were never delivered to the hotel on 2 of 5 days (no staff thought to walk to the local store to buy any replacements) and a few snack in the mini-bar, a front desk person (2 months new to the area) who sent us 4 miles away for a liquor store when there was one 2 blocks from the hotel, another front desk person who sent us to Jacksonville pier for a view of the sunset but failed to tell us it was like a third world country around the pier, a bellman who informed us the hotel previously had a serious mold problem, a valet who asked me to spell my name four times before checking his guest list, attempting to charge at checkout a room fee $10. more per day than confirmed at reservation and not accepting my challenge of the overcharge until I provided the name of the marketing director I personally spoke to when making the reservation, and so on. While the service problems can be fixed, the tiny bathrooms and poorly situated pool will be fatal flaws for this wanna-be 4-5 star resort. Look instead north to the Ritz or Plantation on Amelia island, or south to Ponte Vedra if you want comfort and service.
