Birthday Surprise

from SweetP07
My sister and I stayed at the Hilton Wilmington/ Christiana during a birthday getaway for me exactly one year ago today. Our plan was to take advantage of the gaming at Delaware Park then spend the night at a nearby hotel. I booked the room online then I called to confirm the reservation because we were going to arrive later on that night. While on the telephone with the front desk, I mentioned that I was celebrating my birthday. After we arrived, checked in and went up to our room, (which appeared to be clean and quite nicely decorated) I found a birthday card, fruit and cheese tray, and a bottle of wine...what a nice birthday surprise! By the way, the service at this property was excellent and the breakfast which is included with the "bounce back" package had everything that I wanted to eat and more! We enjoyed our stay so much that we booked this location for my birthday getaway again this year.

s Parking Lot

We went for the "Country Estate" and chose the "Escape to Brandywine" Package.

From the website, we expected a long, winding driveway that ended with a charming estate sourounded by a large lawn, duck pond, and quaint hedgerows.

Instead, we turned right off the highway into a strip-mall motel.

We booked a king-size room complete with a bottle of wine and box of chocolates. We even called to confirm after booking online.

When we got in the room there was no king-sized bed, no wine, and no chocolates. After a call to the front-desk, a very confused person told us that there was no clean king-size room in the whole hotel (the place was empty -- 7 cars in the parking lot). Eventually, we got a bottle of wine, but no chocolates (they were out). The wine was local, but gross. The beds we had were heaven, but it would have been nicer if they could have cleaned a king-size room for us, as requested and promised.

The next morning, we partook of the buffet breakfast that was also part of the package. Even though we went at 10am and the breakfast was advertised to end at 11am, they were cleaning up the buffet just as we got started. No effort was made to give us a chance to get our food, as if we were inconveniencing them.

Upon checkout, the very nice woman at the desk got us our chocolates and explained that the reason we didn't get anything the night before was that "Javier" switched us at the last minute and everything was waiting in another room. If only we were lucky enough to have her there when we checked in.

We're really chill people and all we look for are the basics. I've never called the front desk before to complain -- maybe I should have been a jerk and yelled instead of just accepting our fate. Oh well. Just goes to reinforce that you have to be an a** to get good customer service.

Don't get me wrong, if you have business in Wilmington and want a nice, clean place to stay with comfy beds, by all means -- stay at this hotel! It was great for that.

But, if you want a romantic getaway, skip this place. It's a glorified motel off the side of 95.

That being said, I'd love to have the name of the company that does their marketing (especially their internet marketing)! They suckered us in!

Very relaxing weekend with the escape to brandywine valley package

from u2greek
Had a wonderful weekend stay with my fiancee at the Christiana Hilton. We enjoyed the Escape to Brandywine Valley package which included breakfast buffett, passes to a local attraction (Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, etc.), a bottle of wine for each night's stay, and cocktails.

Staff was very friendly from the moment we checked in to the time we checked out. This included the restaurant staff, maids, and the experience specialist who helped us plan our activities for the weekend.

Hotel was located within 30 minutes of almost all attractions and the local vineyards. The room was clean, but the bathroom was too small.

Definitely would recommend staying at the Christiana Hilton.

d expect of an estate

from A TripAdvisor Member
We purchased the Riverfront Family Fun package for 2 nights. The staff was exceptional, very friendly and helpful. The experience specialist called us at home to check our reservation. However, the website marketed this place as an estate so we did not expect to see it from the main highway and across the street from several strip malls. It's basically a hotel surrounded by parking lots. We thought the executive rooms were over-priced at $250 a night. Also, our room wasn't made up the next day.

Great Weekend or Midweek Getaway

from Angrycrab
My wife and I stayed here for a quick 2 night romantic getaway and we loved this place. The previous 2 reviews pretty much describe everything we experienced. The staff is great! The food at the Brasserie Grill was fantastic (I had the 20oz Ribeye and my wife had the crabcakes and I loved the roasted garlic in the breadbasket). And the room was top-notch (my wife didn't want to leave the king sized bed behind). They have multiple packages to choose from (we chose the Escape to the Brandywine Valley) and they are more than willing to talk to you about the area. We are already planning to return for our next getaway.

Our Favorite Place for Romantic Getaway

from teachngeek
We absolutely love this hotel and would recommend it to anyone for a relaxing getaway or a romantic weekend. We got engaged at this hotel over Valentine's Weekend in 2004 and returned to the hotel for our 1st anniversary in Aug of 2005. This hotel offers wonderful packages that include your room, breakfast, turn-down service, and romantic extras such as flower petals spread on the bed in a heart-shape and chocolate covered strawberries and champagne delivered to your room while you are out at dinner. They even delivered an anniversary card to my husband that I had secretly left at the front desk. The rooms are on a key-access only floor for the package and the beds and pillows are the most comfortable ever! The staff is superb at helping you surprise your spouse to add that special touch to your stay.

They have "Experience Specialists" that phone you a week before arrival when they realize it is a special occassion and discuss all the extra ammenities you can add to your package to make it more enjoyable.

We enjoy spending the day at Delaware Park Casino and Horse Races and then spending the night at the hotel. The Casino is less than a five minute drive from the hotel.

Dated but pleasant

from raindeva
This was the first time I had stayed at a Hilton, so with all the foofaraw about how great they were I guess my expectations were high. My room was paid for by the company that was hosting a seminar I was attending, but I personally wouldn't have paid $164 a night for it.

Things I liked:
The staff are very friendly and the buffet breakfast is great. There are several pleasant areas in which to spend downtime- a garden courtyard, the bar, and the pool are all clean, well-maintained and user-friendly. Also, my room was very quiet and convenient to all of the hotel's amenities. Thumbs up to Hilton for trying to "green" their processes-less water, etc. I never saw the housekeepers but my room was always clean.

The furnishings are dated (ca. 1989 or so) but they are in the process of refurbishing, so this is a minor point.

Things I didn't like:
Wireless down on the second day and the front desk transferred me to India for troubleshooting. The guy in Bangalore insisted that my firewall settings were at fault; however my firewall was OFF and my wireless card could not find a network at all. Never did get assistance with that and reverted to the phone for staying in touch with family members, which is much less convenient and more expensive.

Also, though the hotel says it's in the Wilmington area, you'd have to rent a car to get to Wilmington itself. It's located near a mall in the midst of a suburban area with little discernable public transit. Highly inconvenient for the footbound/ public transport oriented traveler. If you've got a car it's fine, though, as the freeway onramp is right out the door. I visited Philly twice and Baltimore once and had no issues finding the hotel again.

If it were my pesos, I wouldn't stay here again- maybe it'll be better after the refurbishing is completed and enough people complain about the wi-fi service.

Not Hilton Standards....

If you like wallpaper coming off the walls, musty smells, this is the place for you! This is definitely not worth the price... All I wanted to do was relax after a very long day at work and watch the March Madness Sweet 16 games when the cable went out and we had NO TV. The key card I had went bad 2 times and I had to walk about 1/4 of a mile to front desk to get it replaced..... I would try the others hotels in the area... even though my office is right across the street, I will be staying elsewhere.

life saver

I stayed here in late January 2005. I just walked in and booked a room because another place that I had reserved in the area was scary. They gave me an excellent rate despite my lack of a reservation. The rooms are nice and clean and safe (which was important as I was a single female). The decor is charming. The front desk reception was very nice and when I asked them for driving directions they printed them out for me! I went to the restaurant for breakfast the next morning and the service was very expedient. I only needed to stay one night, but I would definitely go back if I needed a hotel in the area.

country living

I was down in delaware for a getway weekend with my girlfriend. I made my reservation from the Hitlon website. I have always had nice stays at other hilton properties when I travel for work. This hotel was no exception.

The staff was very polite and helpful, even at 10 at nite. The manager was short on staff that evening, so he brought our luggage up to our room. We stay on the private floor with keyed access. The room we were giving was a suit.

The room was very well layed out, with a sofa, king size bed, a small dining area, work area and it had all the ammites that a business person would want. The room's decor was like a country bed and breakfest feel, which my girlfriend really liked. The complimentry turndown service was nice after a lond day of exploring the quint state of delaware.

The stay was completely enjoyable. The weekend we were there, the Nascar race was down in dover, so there were alot of families and kids at the hotel. Being on a private floor, kept what could of been a distraction, form being one.

Top Local Tips for Newark

A bit tricky to find the hotel entrance. If you don't use a navigator in your vehicle, I would suggest printed Mapquest.com directions. The hotel signage is excellent but arrival will likely require a u-turn to find the entrance. There are restaurants in the vicinity but the roads are busy and traffic moves swiftly - take the available (complimentary) shuttle bus and avoid crossing by foot.

Close to big airport It is only 20 mins from the PHL (Philadelphia) airport.

Tax free shopping They have lots of shopping with the standard Mall stores and big box stores - but they are tax free. All the chain restaurants too.
