Historical Traveller Reviews of Wardman Park Marriott Hotel
OK, but would stay elsewhere next time
from zfg900704Here are the positives during our stay:
The SUV was parked onsite. We did get a very large room at the 'historic' Wardman Park Tower. It had two double beds and a loveseat and two very big closets and a spacious bathroom. The Metro was right at our doorstep and it was a pleasant walk to the Zoo. The workers, specially at the restaurants in the hotel, were very pleasant.
Here are the negatives we encountered:
The lines at check in were long. There were only 3 agents at the desk during the high volume check in time of 4 o'clock.
The Wardman Park Tower did not impress us. The Lobby was pretty, but our room is anything but. We were shocked to see the condition of the room. It was big but it was not pleasant to look at. I was told that the decor was in the 20's style. I say, whoever decorated it had no taste! The wall paper was peeling, the carpet was stained, the furniture was falling apart (they called it antique.. it looked more like it came from the dump!) and the bathroom was disgusting!
In the bathroom, there were holes on the ceiling, the sink was cracked (it looked like its been glued several times) and the bathtub was slippery and disgusting. It smelled musty, too. The diverter on the shower was broken so when we took our showers, water was coming out of the faucet and the shower (more on the faucet). Worse, the hot water was leaking so while turning off the hot water, hot water dripped on our hands and the knob was so hot! We called to report the problem, but the maintenance worker did not fix it (although we noticed wrench marks on the faucets). The furniture in the room were falling apart that one of the drawers missed one of children's foot by an inch!
We encountered housekeeping problems on our first night. We called for our cots, but they did not come until 4 and a half hours later. We called housekeeping twice and when they finally called back, they informed us that it was a fire hazard to have two cots in our room. They told us they will send comforters so that our children can sleep on the floor instead! After discussing our disgust with the night manager, he finally sent the supervisor of housekeeping at 8:30 pm who surveyed the size and layout of our rooms and agreed that the two cots did not pose any hazards. In the middle of the night, one of our children woke us up to tell us that there were pins poking him. The springs of the mattress on the cot were broken and many were protruding. We tried to bend most of it, but our son ended up sleeping with one of us on a double bed (you can just imagine how uncomfortable we were!). The next morning, housekeeping did replace the cot right away.
We encountered rude and inconsiderate guests. Our room is also very close to the Presendential Suite. Everynight someone was hosting a party in there and the guests passed by our room. They were loud, but by they were gone by 11pm. We really did not get to sleep until they were gone and that was annoying! After walking all day in the hot sun, we were looking forward to sleeping at least by 9pm!
The front desk employees could use more training! Prior to finalizing reservations, I had a rather lengthy discussions with the front desk employees at Wardman Park regarding parking and accomodations. It bothers me when employees can not answer simple questions like parking clearance and size of rooms. It took a while for them to find someone who knows the answer to my questions.
Hopefully, this review will prepare others who are planning to stay at this place. It is a very big hotel and there are alot of people staying here. During our stay, there were at least two conventions. We don't know what the newer rooms look like in the main hotel. The bellman told us they about half the size of the room we are in. The restaurants within the hotel are okay. Our children loved the barbeque chicken pizza at Harry's Pub and the breakfast buffet at Perl's Cafe is great. There are other restaurants outside the hotel which we tried , but if you are looking for really great food and atmosphere, I agree with other reviewers. Go somewhere else.
Next time we are in DC, we will not be staying at the Wardman Park.
Would Stay Again
from craigandstefLovely Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberVery nice rooms and the staff was very helpful and it was convenient to downtown DC.
I highly recommend it.
Fine Place in the nicer neighborhood
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe food at the hotel is adequate. Go elsewhere.
The help ranges from fabulous management types to really inefficient union workers.
Marriott needs to do some work in this regard.
A Good Business Class Hotel in a Quieter Area
from JerseyJohnBe warned, though, that it sits on a steep hill, and you'll need to be in shape if you're going to walk back and forth often to the Metro stop! When you leave the lobby, you enter the newer section of the hotel on the seventh floor, which gives you an idea of how steep the hill is. The new section is not as nice as the main, center section or the pricier Tower. Stay in them if you can.
Aside from getting ripped off by the vending machines, I've never had any complaints. Room service is dependable, the beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. On an upcoming trip, I have the choice of remaining at the Capital Hilton or switching to the Marriott for the weekend and I'm choosing the Marriott.
Very Good

from A TripAdvisor MemberThoughts on the place
from A TripAdvisor MemberThis is a stunning spread of land, which is rare for DC. If you want a bit more than an urban monolith of stone, crammed betwix buildings downtown, this hotel is a welcome relief. There are wonderful landscaped paths and fine grassy patches abound.
I believe the hotel has a large unionized staff, and as such, is paid pretty much regardless of whether they go above and beyond or not at all. The result is that some of the restaurant and bar help make no real effort to welcome you, and pay no attention to your needs. Likewise the room service team with their inconsistant service and lack of spirit. Marriott should pay close attention as this damages brand.
On the other side, there are wonderful rooms, and beautiful spaces in this lovely, grand hotel. Housekeepers are efficient and warm and do their work quickly...tip them and they smile welcomingly.
The front desk staff seems stressed at times, and the hotel has too many security suits walking around and acting like police. The messages contradict the hotel mystique.
During a visit in late May I encountered a gentleman from Marketing, named Bill, who was remarkably helpful in assisting me when I had a few issues. He had recently arrived from another Marriott property. He may be a hopeful indication of better things to come.
The Wardman Tower is a nice part of the older hotel, and the newer portions of the hotel seem to have the same atmosphere as any hotel anywhere. If you dont mind the breezeway walk to the Wardman Tower, try and stay there.
If you want to escape your room and read the paper head to the breezeway between the main hotel and the Wardman tower. People watch, read, sip a Starbucks Coffee, and enjoy the character of the hotel.
Enjoy!

DC Metro is the way to Go! If you are visiting the DC area, the best mode of transportation is the DC Metro. You can plan your trip before your visit at http://www.wmata.com
Five Guys It's not often I find myself hitting a burger joint in Chinatown, but after all the good things I'd heard, I gave it a go and was not disappointed. This place comes in second to In-N-Out back home, but not by much...excellent burgers, great fries..all very fresh.
if tourist - stay at a hotel close to Metro If you're a tourist, finding a hotel close to the Metro is key. Taxis are fine, but they can add up quickly, and many taxi drivers will charge you more even thought they're not supposed to.
