Bargain for a weekend

from NicholaB
Stopped over in DC for a weekend (Sat / Sun night). Bedroom was large, with kitchen and living room area. Though very slightly tatty all was very clean and the staff very helpful. The hotel is within walkable distance of the main tourist sights and the restaurants and bars of Foggy Bottom.

Cost us £90 for 2 nights through Expedia - the price more than doubles during the week. Would recommend.

Not a satisfactory stay at all

from lesnomades
I just returned from a three day stay at the State Plaza Hotel, having stayed here last two years ago. It has really slipped since my last stay. At check-in the clerks were surly, and had to redo the check-in slip since they put a higher room rate than the email confirmation I received. (I had the printed email fortunately). The rooms have new locks, but the programmable key is bulky and annoying, cards would have better. The rooms are very tired, worn carpet and 1960's bathrooms. The phone did not work, and it took 2 days for them to fix it. It was cold outside at night (40's) and the heat did not seem to work. The room fell to about 62 degrees when I woke up. I mentioned this to the staff, and they said it was an old apartment building and the heat was turned off on May 1. There was nothing they could do about it. The restaurant is closed, continental breakfast is a joke. Eat at the starbucks two blocks away. No high speed internet, don't even count on dial up (see phone note above). The location is nice, it is only three blocks from the GWU metro stop. The little kitchenette is handy. I really cannot recommend this hotel, even at the price I paid. The lack of amenties, the inattentiveness of the staff, and overall decline of the rooms in the last two years makes me recommend you stay anywhere else in DC besides here.

March 27, 2005 The hotel is in an excellent location. We were just 10 minutes walking distance from the Lincoln Memorial. More walking if you went to the Mall, however you could take the metro to the Mall. The metro (Foggy Bottom) is about 3 blocks away.
The room was very clean. We used the kitchen for our meals to save money. Over all we were very pleased.

I agree completely with   "February 8, 2005:  A TripAdvisor Member, Durham, NC." Stayed there twice with great experiences. The last time was just awful!

This is a suite???

from snewark
We went on a family weekend jaunt to DC over President's day 2004 and booked a suite as we usually do. A suite to us is a bedroom, living roon with sofa bed, 2 TVs, etc. With 2 teens this is most comfortable for us. Upon arrival at this old hotel the suite was a regular room with 2 double beds and a kitchenette (circa 1950's)! We were all crammed into the bedroom with 1 TV. ALso blocks away from the Metro! Needless to say we weren't happy. The parking garage was impossible to get into and we ended up parking on the street which was free due to the weekend. Bright spots: staff was friendly, the very expensive breakfast in the little restaurant was excellent! If you want cheap without any ammenities this would be OK but I wouldn't stay here again!

Terrible experience

from Black Lab Nickie
I was in DC last week for a meeting. The meeting organizer arranged for me to stay at the State Plaza Hotel. When I arrived in the late afternoon, I had a hard time finding their parking lot which is in an alley. After I finally parked my car, I walked into the building next to the parking lot. It looked abandoned, I was not able to find anyone. I wandered over to another building and found someone at the front desk. He checked me in but insisted on putting me into a room in the first building I went to. I went over there and still did not see anyone. The elevator was dark and smelled terrible. The room did not have a proper lock. I looked around, did not feel safe and left for a hotel in Georgetown.

The staff was quite unpleasant and the place was not maintained properly. Do not stay there.

Great location for people who prefer to walk to memorials

from OldMagnolia
This apt bldg used to house State Dept. folks. Easy walk to memorials and GWU. Close to Columbia Plaza which has an underrated Chinese restaurant: the Magic Gourd.
consider a room here for longer stays

Foggy Bottom

from GMurphyEsq
Stayed at State Plaza for two evenings while in Washington fo business. Rate was $135 @ night. Noted that my rate was lowest among my collegues who were staying there. Rate were up to $200. Rooms were fine. Hotel shows its age but rooms were like small apartments with kitchenette and 60' ish bathrooms (not retro but actual). I ate breakfast and dinner at restuarant which was very good (pricey, but perhaps not by Washington standards). Marriott and Ritz Carlton are not too far away. Great location for proximately to tourist sites. About 3 blocks from Foggy Bottom Blue Line Metro stop. I was satisfied. Neither blown away as some reviews indicate, but not disatisfied as others. This might be a good place if you had an extended stay and wanted a homey type of feeling.

Great Place!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just returned from a vacation in Washington, DC and stayed at the State Plaza Hotel. Our experience there was great! The room was nice, the staff was friendly, it is in a good location to all the tourist sites. I would highly recommend this place to others.

Try the State Plaza

from singers
Try the State Plaza in Foggy Bottom for affordable, convenient DC lodgings. If you book through Hotel Kingdom which I found on a site called Travelaxe you get rates under $100 a night for a room with a kitchen and dressing room. It is close to the Foggy Bottom metro and is in a safe central location.

Top Local Tips for Washington DC

Free parking downtown in DC on weekends Travellers to DC need to remember that parking is free on most downtown streets on weekends.

Whitehouse You are only a very very short walk from the whitehouse, making the location great for tourists an buisiness people alike.

weather Because of circumstances we had to visit in July. I would not recommed this as it was very hot but also very humid so it was uncomfortable at times. Also would recommend hop on hop off bus tours which are excellent value and show you every part of the city and ticket lasts 24 hrs. Would also advise tour at night when all monuments are lit up
