I planned our fourth of July trip 6 months in advance, via Priceline. I called several times to make sure that my 60+ year old mother and I would have two single beds and each time the customer service rep would reply, "Of course, Miss XYZ. I have two single beds reserved for you. Upon arrival, I expected a smooth check in. I was unpleasantly surprised at the treatment my mother and I received. I was told that we were being put in a room with a single and a fold out sofa. I certainly was not going to put my mother on a fold out and when I explained that we had called several times to confirm our two singles room and that that is what we were going to need, the customer service rep very aggressively said, "NO". After a half an hour of arguing with this man, I called Priceline. They were very nice and promptly called the front desk. They were able to make no headway, either. They said that for an extra $50 a night that we could get what we had originally been promised or we could go to another hotel. Of course, finding a hotel in DC on the Fourth of July weekend would cost 3 times the amount. After an hour of arguing back and forth with the manager and "customer service rep", they finally decided that they may have a room for us. I was treated like a second class citizen and the treatment that we received was deplorable. I was also told that we would be able to see the fireworks from the hotel, which also was not true. I would not suggest this hotel to anyone, friend or foe. Don't waste the time, effort or money. I would suggest staying in a hotel in the Northwest quadrant of the city and stay away for the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel at all costs.

The roll-away bed was highly uncomfortable. They put me in a room that had duct tape on the windows. I was freezing to death and the thin blankets did not help.

The conference I attended used Hotels.com for booking; Loews was an alternate space when the conference hotel filled. I was given a reception-type room - with a dining and sitting area, but no bedroom. Not only was the roll-away bed uncomfortable, but the living room furniture was dirty, making for an uncomfortable stay. The hotel was not able to move me to a standard room.

Great Location

The hotel location was great. We flew in and used the metro for transportation (station located below hotel). They will store your luggage if you arrive early. We reserved a parlour room which only has a sofa sleeper which we found out was broken. I called the front desk and within minutes had a double roll away bed. I would suggest to spend an additional $30 a night and reserve a room with a real bed. We never tried the breakfast buffet which was $14.95 but we used the hotel's restaurant for supper a couple of times. Very expensive but very good. I highly recommend a restaurant on the waterfront (10 minute walk) called "Jenny's" which has asian fusion seafood at reasonable prices. We walked from the hotel to almost everything we wanted to see. Only downside was there was no nightlife around the hotel and trying to figure out the metro system but we did have a good time staying at this hotel.

I can't believe all of the negative reviews about this hotel. I've never been to DC, and was afraid of booking a hotel in a not so safe neighborhood.

The location of Loew's is great and is within walking distance of the Mall and the Smithsonian. Our rooms were very clean, room service was prompt and housekeeping was excellent. Although the food was a little expensive, there are shops and small deli's on the lower level which helps out for those of us on a tight budget.

I would recommend this place to anyone, especially if you really want to walk to see everything.

Solid family value, neighborhood lacks soul

We were expecting a 3-star family
hotel and were pleasantly surprised. I peeked in the non-parlor rooms and was less impressed.... don't pay more than $120 for them.

Concierge, restaurant & health center/pool staff were great. The restaurant
hosts were uniformly superb as well as the dinner and bar. Yes some wear & tear
on the building, our rollaway bed & blown bulb were remedied in minutes. Room
cleaning was skillful but sporadically timed.

The neighborhood is rather bleak though, brutal concrete 1980 bunkers. The 2nd
floor indoor Promenade is fakey & plastic, and everything's closed after 6pm &
Sat/Sun. That was rather inconvenient. However, the SW waterfront is a real
neighborhood one metro stop away (or 1/2 mile walk).

Handy 1/2 mile stroll to the African and Castle, another few blocks to Air &
Space. A solid 3-star family hotel, great value. We'll definitely stay there
again!

We made a reservation to stay at another hotel, but read a review on the internet that this Lowes was "so wonderful." At the last minute, we called the Lowes and made a reservation. For some odd reason, I said to forget it, so we canceled the reservation and stayed elsewhere. The 2nd night in Washington, we went to the Lowes to see what it was that we were potentially missing. Unbelieveable. From the entry to the rooms themselves, forget it. I would never stay at this hotel. It is worn out and tired. The wallpaper is very dated in the hallways, the lobby area looks tired and sad and one glance inside a room confirmed our idea. The only positives are that right below the hotel is a small plaza with a few convenience shops and the entrance to the metro. We also ate at the downstairs restaurant for dinner (the only restaurant on property). The food was pricey, but very, very good. However, when we compared the price of this hotel to the hotel we stayed at we couldn't stop laughing. Lowes quote us $319/night for a standard room. We paid just over $200/night at another top quality DC hotel, which earned a better rating than the Lowes from trip advisor and had a better, more downtown central, location. I am glad we did not stay here. If you are considering whether or not to stay here, there are much better choices for considerably less money. In the future, I would pick a hotel not for it's "mall location", but its proximity to the metro station. The subway system is very cheap, very, very safe, easy to understand, and accessible to most every possible tourist location in dc.

Loews was lovely

My teen grandaughter and I stayed at Loews L'Enfant Plaza for two nights in July. Our room was large, clean and comfortable with a reasonably good view. A mini Starbucks appears in the pretty lobby each morning. Free ice tea is available in the afternoons. The concierge was truly helpful. One floor below the hotel is a shopping area that is part of the DC metro system. It has lots of food choices including McDonalds, delis and convenience stores. It's thus possible to snack and eat quite inexpensively here. Also the food in the restaurant was delicious. The location is quite convenient to the mall and the metro. The only down side is the neighborhood - it seems safe but really bleak - just lots of squat cement buildings - no shops or restaruants, bars or other hotels. Next time I plan to stay on the other side of the mall in a nicer neighborhood.

Very Good Experience

Very good experience. The staff had little "goodie bags" for my kids, which was appreciated after a long drive. The room was clean and everything functioned as expected. The concierge was VERY helpful. Loved the location, with the shopping mall downstairs and the Metro stop down there, too (although the shops closed too early, I thought), and a nice short walk to the Mall. Staff, bellhops, housekeeping, were all very nice. I did have to ask to have some of my parking charge removed because I arrived after the self-park lot was closed, but they did not argue. They had a nice "3rd nite free" promotion which made the price very reasonable. Rooftop pool had "bubble" over it so it was usable in off-season, yet water was not heated. The "bubble" needs some maintenance which was noticed when it was windy.

Disappointing lack of attention to detail

We (a family of three) stayed here for 2 nights last month. Cost was over $700. Had reserved a rollaway bed. It was not in room. Asked front desk 3 times for rollaway (would have put our child in the sleeper sofa but when we opened it, it had a big sign that said "Broken...do not use.") Finally got a rollaway at 10 pm. Our package was supposed to include a fruit basket and free parking. Had to ask several times for the fruit basket, and when we checked out, we were charged $40 for the "free" parking. They did credit us back for the rollaway and the parking when we asked. But I guess I was just disappointed that we had to "fight" for everything. Several light bulbs were burned out in the room...signage to the rooftop pool was really confusing...there just was a lack of attention to detail. We loved the location. The concierge was wonderful. And the breakfast buffet was a good value. It's a shame that it's the little things that leave a bad impression.

NOT a 4 start hotel

I booked a room a month an advanced, I didn't get the room I requested.
I'm a Loews 1st memeber, I didn't get the welcome gift I was supposed to get, nor did I get my morning paper. The Bath tub did not drain properly. THEY CHARGED my bank debit card not once but 3 times!!!
Caused checks to bounce.

Too expensive for the Quality of Rooms

The great thing about his hotel is the location. It is 2 blocks from the mall and has a subway that can be accessed from the basement of the hotel.

Our room however was average at best. I have seeen similar rooms at the Fairfield Inn or LaQuinta. I feel this has primarily to do with the age of the hotel and the fact that our room had not been renovated in many years. The wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling. The bathtub and hardware were old and barely functional. There is a TV from the 70's in the bathroom, black and white of course. It did work at least. Our cost was 149.00 per night. I certainly would not pay any more for this hotel.

have seen ratings where people are saying it isn't a 4 star hotel. it never was a 4 star hotel.AAA/Mobil gudie give it 3 stars and I was very happy with the ratings and my stay. web sites such as expedia travelocity do not give accurate ratings. if you are ever unsure of the rating of a hotel, see AAA/Mobil guide. quiet hotel good restaurant great location.

Top Local Tips for Washington DC

Washington Monument Our guide said they usually offer 2 walk down tours of the monument daily. You ride the elevator up, and instead of riding back down, you can walk down. She said is takes about an hour to walk down, but you can look at all the dedicated bricks on the inside of the monument. You need to ask in the morning when you are getting your tickets if any walk down tours are being offered and get tickets for that specific time. Tours depart every 30 minutes. The guide stated that she had offered a walk down tour earlier that day, but there were no takers!

"Monuments by Moonlight" tour - or any oher tour, for that matter We planned a nighttime tour of the monuments and memorials for our very first night in the city. Along with being a great tour, it was a great way to see the major attractions, get the "lay of the land," and help us figure out what we wanted to see more of, and how to plan a good daily itinerary based on what was near other sights, etc.
