Historical Traveller Reviews of Embassy Suites Hotel at the Chevy Chase Pavilion
Terrific
from A TripAdvisor MemberAfter reading an earlier review about a family that was almost mugged, I was nervous about security, but I felt safe the entire time that I was there.
Convenient location: hotel is situated directly above the metro. Visiting DC forces you to do A LOT of walking. It was a pleasure to get off at the Friendship Heights station and know after a few escalator rides up that we were "home".
Complimentary breakfast and managers reception were all great touches. The breakfast is a FULL breakfast with choice of fruits, cereals, omelettes made to order, sausages, pancakes, waffles, muffins, juices, coffee, etc.
HOtel is part of a shopping mall, which didn't interest us much -- BUT it was also nice to have a STARBUCKS on the main level.
There are actually two health clubs that you have access to and my husband enjoyed the full service one a lot. The smaller one, on the penthouse level is next to the swimming pool, which was a bit small, but adequate considering it was just to take the edge off of walking all day through DC. My son and his friend had a great time.
We got a rate of $169/nite, internet rate -- non-refundable. It was definitely worth it.
We can't say enough about this hotel. WHile packing for the last leg of our vacation, Ocean CIty Maryland, my son and his friend inquired if the next hotel was going to be an Embassy Suites, too. Enough said....
Almost, but not quite
from sfrickThe location of the hotel is great, even if most of your time will be spent touring, as the Metro stop is in the hotel building. Also, there are excellent shops in the center across the street, so all in all we would be happy to go back again and hope that Hilton literally "cleans up its act". A little carpet cleaning, some brighter lights, and some paint would go a long way.
Great Location, Dirty Carpet, Room Renovations Needed
from maxpr1I did not hear the construction noises on the 8th floor, so unsure if where the room is located is a determining factor in the noise that other Trip Advisor commentors have made.
The room design was well done for my needs. However, the carpet in the room was dirty and torn, the upholstery on the couch was torn and insides were spilling out, and the walls needed painting. Whoever is doing the upkeep on this hotel needs to wake up as there are far too many comments on Trip Advisor about this continuing degradation of property.
High speed internet access is $9.95 for 24 hours. Local calls are $1.00. I opted to use dial up access for the $1 local charge versus the high speed cost. $10 a night for internet access is $300 per month basically. This amount is totally outrageous when many hotels are now providing free high speed internet access.
This hotel is very close to the Corner Bakery which makes wonderful chili and chicken noodle soup. Booeymonger's sandwiches were wonderful and the place was always packed so other patrons shared my enthusiasm for their food. The approximating Cheesecake Factory restaurant is next door and surprisingly this was the first Cheesecake Factory meal that both my husband and I found extremely disappointing. Maybe they use different recipes than the other Cheesecake Factory restaurants, but both our meals were disappointing enough that we will probably avoid them all in the future.
This hotel has a great location with the Metro right in the shopping center near the hotel escalator/elevator. The Mazza Galleria across the street provided a movie theater and moderate to upscale shopping opportunities. Lord and Taylor was a short walk down the street. Inside the hotel was a card advertising Enterprise rental cars that would offer a 10% discount to clients and they picked us up at the hotel and took us to the Enterprise site. The Enterprise location closed at 6 p.m. and had more limited weekend hours, so be sure to keep and eye on your watch if you are renting a car. The parking at the hotel for rental cars was $15 a night, so we only rented a car for one day and took Yellow Cab the remainder of our trip. The parking garage for the rental car was rather spacially restricted so I was glad we did not have a large vehicle. Yellow Cab drivers always were prompt and courteous. If you plan on using the taxi, read first online about their local zone charges. When you get in the cab, make sure and ask in advance what the fare is as the zone charges are used rather than the meter in many instances and that way there are no surprises when it comes time to pay your fare. The fares do vary based on time of day, number of passengers, and amount of luggage. I was hesitant to commit to using the taxi cab versus a rental car, but it was far cheaper and actually more pleasant to spend $15-30 a day on taxifare rather than pay $45 for a rental car plus the $15 per day parking fee.
I would probably avoid staying at this Embassy Suites, Chevy Chase Pavillion, again until I started seeing something on Trip Advisor that the management has invested in carpet and general room upgrades.
Unbelievably disappointed...
from lishusLobby is very nice. Hall and room carpet is worn and rippling. Carpet in room had burn holes and was pulling from the wall. Burn holes in upholstery. Had to clip drapes closed due to exterior hotel lights being too bright.
Fire alarm was pulled on our first night at 12:30 and was immediately followed by a fight in a room down the hall. The fight and yelling with profanity then moved to the hall outside our room. We called the front desk to request that these people be moved outside. All they could say was "Police here." We had to listen to the yelling until well after 2a.m.
The "made-to-order" breakfast is more of a cafeteria style. The only thing you can have made to order is an omelet. The ad was a bit misleading.
Construction on Western Avenue will wake you up promptly at 7a.m. on weekdays.
Three separate desk clerks acted irritated when we requested parking ticket validation.
We asked one clerk for directions to a grocery store because the directions in our room were to a store that had been torn down(wasted walk). It was Sunday and she said they all closed at 5 except one tiny market. In searching for this market we found a Safeway less than 5 blocks away that was open until 11p.m.
When we received our express checkout bill it was for $140 less than our credit card had been charged. The desk clerk could not understand that I wanted a refund and had taken the express bill from me. The manager came over and was unbelievably condescending. He said I'd have to contact whomever I made the reservations through for any refund. When I asked for my express bill back he put his hands in the air and said there wasn't one. I had to insist that he return my bill and after at least 10 minutes of telling him I would not leave without the bill they'd given me earlier the bill was suddenly found at the other end of the front desk underneath a pile of papers.
The staff was either rude or just not helpful. They don't seem to even know the area where the hotel is located. The condition of the hotel, while being in the mall is nice and very pretty, was not perfect as the reviews had lead me to believe.
The amazing thing is, we aren't picky travelers, nor have I ever had any sort of confrontation with a manager before. This was a huge disappointment.
Great Hotel, Excellent Location
from A TripAdvisor MemberOverall, we enjoyed our stay and would return if traveling in the area.
Great Location - good restaurants and shopping
from tmynattThe Cheescake Factory is also located inside this mall and they have awesome food.
Great location. Excellent amenities.
from hertstravelerGood mix of shops and restuarants within walking distance.
Travelling with two children aged 3 and 8 who really enjoyed the swimming pool and jacuzzi on the penthouse level.
Very good breakfast buffet and nightly managers reception with free cocktails and pretzels.
Would stay at again if in the area again.
All in all everything we wanted on hand with comfortable surroundings.
Our stay in Chevy Chase
from retiredgrandmaOur room and bathroom were very clean. The only thing we noticed was that the room could have been vacuumed a little better. We would definitely stay here again.
Definitely the place to stay!!!! We loved it!
from NashvillegurlWe would definitely stay there again! The location couldn't have been better or more convenient and the hotel was great!!! I highly recommend it!
Great Roomy Hotel
from BigFootPATop Local Tips for Washington DC
Angelico's in Tenley Town Try the calzones! Actually everything on the menu looks great. It's within few steps of the Metro stop. Prices are very good, portions are enormous. Sit outside if the weather is okay and people watch. Get it to go if you are in a hurry. It's not the typical tourist place which is nice--lots of young people but not a rowdy crowd.
D.C. Metro By all means take a cab to your hotel on arrival by plane. You're probably tired from the flight and the cabs are not as expensive as in some other big cities. But if you spent your time in Washington getting around by Metro, take it to the airport when you leave as long as you don't have a lot of luggage. You can't beat the price and it's very convenient.
HEAT It is too hot in June for visiting museums and seeing sites in this beautiful city.
