Great Weekend Getaway

Quirky, new age luxury in a great location near Dupont Circle. Parking is expensive, but street parking on the weekends can be had if you hunt.
Ask for a upper story room, as the bar downstairs is a popular DC meat market on the weekends. Great fun, but not if you need the quiet.

Funky colors - loved it

My husband and I recently stayed at the Topaz Hotel. The room was very comfortable, quiet, spacious and I loved the colors. The lobby and hotel corridors were unimpressive, but the lobby bar/breakfast spot was cute. Continental breakfast was expensive, but the service was good. We walked back from Georgetown late at night and felt safe going to our hotel.

We stayed for three nights at the Topaz and had a fantastic time. The room was very quiet, large, and alluring. Nice to have a CD player. The elevator did break down but was fixed quickly. The service was so-so.
It really depended upon the individual you were dealing with. A very romantic place. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on in a hotel. Unfortunately we never made it up in time for the "energy" breakfast. Maybe they should keep the breakfast bar open until 11 a.m., but hotels don't like to do that as a rule.

My three small gripes:

For a hotel that promotes wellness, I think the bathtubs should definitely be larger and cleaner.

Again, for a hotel that promotes wellness, I was surprised at how smoky the reception lounge/bar area was. I was hoping to enjoy a quiet glass of wine but was chased away by the thick clouds of cigarette smoke.

I keep trying to get booked on the Kimpton Group bonus frequent-visitor program but have not been successful after 4 attempts online and asking the management. The front desk staff just shrugged.

Otherwise, a truly memorable stay. Far far better than the Hotel Helix, also run by Kimpton Group in DC. I found that hotel very poorly run with poor unprofessional service and filled with ambitious but generally failed interior design. A design concept that had potential but could not rise about the government standard-issue architecture and finishes. Go to the Topaz instead!

The Topaz hotel was the best! The room and the bathroom were spotless, the linens and Aveda products were superb, the room was very large and the staff was super accomodating and extremely friendly. The hotel has fabulous decor and a serene atmosphere. This is the perfect hotel to go to in order to unwind. There is a cute little restaurant across the street and the hotel is within walking distance to the circle where there are a lot of stores, bars and many restaurants. I would DEFINITELY return to the Topaz and reccomend it whole heartedly.

Frequenting DC on a regular basis I was unaware of the Topaz Hotel and am so happy to have discovered it. All the reviews are true - extremely accomodating staff, great atmosphere, wonderful room and perfect location. Best of all - very reasonable rates!

A Wonderful Place to Stay!

My husband and I just returned from a 3 night stay at the Topaz (Dec.
29/30/31) and loved staying there. We chose this hotel because of the good reviews on this site as well as the Topaz's great web site. The hotel exceeded our expectations. Our room looked just like the pictures shown on-line...warm and cozy, with a fun decorating theme. The king size bed, with down duvet and heavy cotton sheets was so comfortable.
The room was spacious (we were on the 9th floor-a non-smoking floor) with windows that spanned the width of the room. The extra touches...delicious teas, Aveda toiletries, wireless internet, comfy chesterfield and chair, beautiful furniture, a selection of current magazines in the room, daily newspaper - all added to our enjoyment.
The location is good - just off Connecticut Street on N Street. A quiet location (nice residential area), and about a 15-20 minute walk to the White House and museums on the Mall, and about the same distance to Georgetown. There are good restaurants just around the corner on Connecticut St. The hotel is close to the Dupont Circle Metro Stn. I would definitely return to this hotel...can't say enough good things about it!

Wow what can I say. The Topaz Hotel was jsut incredible. Besides my initial trouble checking in (my own fault of course) the rest of my stay at the Topaz was simply incredible. I was greeted by a very friendly staff and went up to my room to be even more surprised. The room was just gorgeous! The colors were great, the room was big and the king size bed was incredibly relaxing. I have never felt more at any other hotel that I've ever been too! Can't wait to go back.

If you're searching for that perfect hotel in DC- you REALLY need to stay here! I just can't say enough positive things about it. We were there the weekend of 10/24/03 and it was a terrific experience from start to finish. The staff is friendly and helpful. Our room was huge and furnished nicely (think Trading Spaces with a funky twist!), the king size bed was super comfy (love those down comforters!), the in-room herbal tea was a pleasant surprise, I could go on and on...The location is great, right off Dupont Circle. Lots of restaurants and shopping close by. The neighborhood is residential and quiet. Our room was also very quiet despite the fact that the lobby was quite a night spot. You would never know it from our room.Lastly, the price was fabulous. We got a great deal, used our AAA discount to get the free parking and ended up spending the same for 2 nights that we would have spent on 1 at a more pricier alternative.This was a wonderful spot for a weekend getaway and we will definitely go back. Try it - you won't be disappointed!!!

Very cozy hotel, big room, wonderfully comfy bed and nice staff.
Definitely MUCH nicer than any of the big chain hotels I usually stay at. Great location, too, close to subway and many good restaurants.

The staff was wonderful, the room was small but very lovely. Very close to Metro and Strabucks for a morning pick me up. The down side wa, very limited Room Service and no pool. I would stay here again if I ever come back to D.C.

Little known secret - your AAA discount gets you free valet parking! (a $22/night value). Also, this hotel is QUIET. The hotel is on a side street, and we were on the 9th floor, which means you heard nothing of the DC madness below.

Everything else good you've read about this hotel is true. The linens, pillows, and mattresses are Ritz-Carlton quality. Every staff person I met was friendly and helpful.

The decor of the rooms may be described as "ghastly" or "fun" depending on your frame of reference, but I don't care. Will definitely stay here again.

Zone to meters?? I heard a rumor that DC taxis will be switching from zone fares to meters which will increase the cost of using taxis.

Taxi zones vs. Metro rates vs Dulles 5A Metrobus Taxis use zone prices, almost any ride will be $9-12 vs $1.35 for Metro anywhere in town (add $1 for rush hour). Metrobus 5A goes to Dulles from L'Enfant Plaza (central Metro station) a few times an hour for only $3, and obviously does so going in as well, vs. Metro to Falls Church station and a $9 bus from there to Dulles, or $55 or so for a taxi. SuperShuttles MUST be booked 24 hours in advance but cost $22 (add $10 per additional passenger) and will pick you up at your hotel, though there may be other pickups en route, so allow an hour transit time. Also, if you plan a few hours at Dulles, take the VA Regional Transit shuttle from curbside 2E for fifty cents to the Udvar-Hazy branch of the National Air & Space Museum (free) - allow at least an hour or two to see the space shuttle Enterprise, SR-71 Blackbird, Concorde, and literally hundreds of other famous or obscure air and spacecraft, with an observation tower overlooking the Dulles runway to watch jets as they land and much more!
