Historical Traveller Reviews of The St Regis Washington Hotel

from Gate95
Stayed over a saturday night for a leisure weekend. In short- I've spent a huge amount of time at the Ritz Carlton hotels, and think that the St Regis comes nearly as close in quality and care.. Almost seamless experience. Things we noticed and appreciated: 1) super, friendly and very professional concierge service 2) beautiful property, impeccably clean. 3) Small details: I hate fabric headboards: think they're dirty and can't be cleaned. Here, a cotton headboard cover was provided with turndown service. 4) Beautiful renovation. 5) Generous policy re. early checkin and late checkout. Very much appreciated.

Things that could use a little work: 1) hallways echo, and the noise of closing doors is enough to wake you up at night. They need to figure out a way to have the doors close softly, or to add more sound absorption to the halls. 2) Parking charges of 40$ push the limits of acceptability. This feels like gouging a bit. Happy to spring for 5$ cokes, but the $40 goes too far.

Otherwise a memorable stay. A top quality property, staff and brand.

The St. Regis in DC--A Regal Experience!

from MLtravels
In early August 2008, I had the pleasure of staying at The St. Regis during my vacation in DC. The service was beyond what I expected...the saying "treated like a Queen" applies here when speaking of the St Regis DC. I was celebrating my birthday in DC and spent 3 nights at this fabulous property. From the moment, the taxi delivered me to the front door, the service was 5 star plus! The door attendants were pleasant and prompt to welcome me to the St. Regis. The front desk staff were pleasant and extremely receptive to any request I had regarding my room. They were aware it was my birthday and happy wishes were extended upon my arrival. They are famous for the St. Regis butler...and it is a real service. Within minutes of arriving to my room "my" butler arrived to review the room and to offer me yet another "welcome". Later that day, I was greeted at my door with a piece of cake with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate in chocolate along with fresh raspberries. The room was beautiful and recently remodeled. The room and bathroom were clean and serviced twice a day with a very attentive turn-down service. The color scheme is very warm and welcoming. They have a Bose system in the room along with a DVD player and a large flat screen TV. The most fun was a TV in the bathroom--behind the mirror! Yes, you could stand in the bathroom, look into the mirror and watch television. The bathroom was large with a tiled walk-in shower. The concierge desk was extremely courteous and helpful. No matter what I asked for or needed help with, the concierge had the answers. They have a complimentary business center on the first floor for hotel guests. There is a charge if you choose to use your laptop in your room. Another favorite moment at this hotel is the 6 p.m. glass of champagne in the lobby. To sit in this lobby resembling a Palace, drinking champagne, made me wonder if I was still in the States or in Old World Europe. I highly recommend The St. Regis for your next stay in Washington, DC. The only will never want to leave your room or this property to see the sites! The St. Regis is within walking distance of all the tourist sites. The White House is directly down the street, at most a few minutes walk. The Farragut North metro is 2 blocks away. Staying at the St. Regis in Washington, DC is truly a pampered experience...

The St. Regis, beyond our expectations

from complexions
My family & I just returned from a stay at the St. Regis in Washington DC. Initially, my teenagers found it a bit stuffy, but quickly settled into enjoying the wonderful service. The location is 1 1/2 blocks from the North side of The White House. We easily walked to the National Mall and beyond. The check in and check out went smoothly--no hidden charges. The concierge service helped us with several items, from actually booking bike tours to suggesting dinner establishments. The continental breakfast each morning was nice; fresh fruit, bagels, lox, pastries, muffins and fresh squeezed orange juice-not overwhelming. The room was well appointed and quiet with extremely comfortable beds, a flat screen TV, a well placed full length mirror and an unexpected "Electric TV" in the bathroom mirror--(perfect for not missing a moment of The Summer Olympics). Our room faced out to the front of the hotel---no "view" of the sights, but not a disappointment either. There are double sinks with a large glass shower (no tub). There is a charge for WIFI. We opted to use the pleasant business center, with several computers, printer, stationery and bottled water at each station. The staff didn't miss a thing. When a cab was ordered for our departure, a confirmation letter was delivered with all particulars listed. A birthday card and birthday cake with chocolate dipped strawberries were a lovely surprise on my special day. Room service was pleasant and prompt (you must try the kobe beef sliders-unbelievable)! This hotel has been open for less than 1 year and is beautifully decorated and extraordinarily clean. Our stay couldn't have been nicer--we would definitely return to the St. Regis and strongly recommend this hotel for business travelers and as well as vacationing families.

Great location and difficult to fault

from KillerUK
The hotel is very central and walking distance to all the main sites or a short taxi journey. We didn't use the metro but it is equally as handy.

The rooms were of a decent size with reasonable sized bathrooms. The walk-in shower was fantastic after a hot day doing the sights. The rooms were of the standard expected for this class of hotel and I couldn't fault them on any grounds

I travelled with my family and the confirmed connecting rooms for the children was another plus.

The check-in staff and concierge team were very helpful and I couldn't fault any of the restaurant suggestions.

The only down side was the limited inhouse dining (the restaurant is being renovated) and were it not for that I would have given it maximum stars. I wouldn't hesitate to book this hotel again if returning to Washington

Beautiful, Elegant, Outstanding Service!!

from Howardite
My husband and I stayed at the St. Regis over the July 4th weekend as a little "stay-cation" (we live in the area).

From the moment we pulled up to the building to check in to the time we drove away after checking out it was fantastic. The lobby is classy and inviting. Lemonade, tea and soft drinks are in the lobby early in the day, and wine and soft drinks in the afternoon. You can sit there and have a pleasant chat with a companion or with other hotel guests.

We have never experienced a more pleasant and accomodating staff! Every request and need was quickly attended to with graciousness and smiles. You don't even get your own ice: make a call and a "butler" almost immediately brings it to you in a crystal ice bucket, even several times a day. There is 24-hour room service and a 24 hour concierge service.

The room was great. While not huge it was a decent space, tastefully decorated and with a Tlarge, beautiful chandelier over the bed. While there was no tub, the shower was HUGE--probably large enough for 4 people--with both a hand-held shower and a stable over-head shower. The piece-de-resistance was the "magic mirror" that is actually a t.v. , with a remote control. There is a phone in the bathroom, and two in the bedroom, including one cordless.

We had a wonderful stay, and have recommended the hotel to all of our friends!

Efficient Service, Perfect Location!

from BermudaBum
Stayed at the St. Regis while in the DC area for a family event out in Montgomery County. Absolutely beautiful hotel with a great staff and very large rooms - We stayed on the seventh floor, the only floor with the big palladium windows in each room.

Valet service was quick and friendly, and "private dining" was super-
quick. I called for a pot of coffee Saturday morning, and it showed up less than four minutes later! And, upon returning to our room a little after midnight, I placed a breakfast order hang-tag on the door, for 7:20 the next morning - At EXACTLY 7:20, we got a knock on the door.

We would certainly have liked a tub in the room, but, hey, it's an historic building (beautifully restored and maintained) so sometimes you have to make some small compromises. The bathroom overall was very spacious, as was the shower enclosures, and the toiletires provided were top-notch (and the in-mirror TV was fun!).

The location can't really be beat - Two blocks from the rear of the White House, a block and a half to the red Metro line.

All in all, we'd definitely return to the St. Regis the next time we're in DC!

Expected More

from Polarwanderer
We expected more from the St. Regis having stayed at these properties in Rome and Monarch Beach. The location is great for business or pleasure, just a few blocks from the White House.
The rooms however are quite small. Our bathroom was cramped and did not even have a tub. The service was just ok. We booked a package and they could not locate it and still had trouble even after we showed them the reservation print-out. That being said, the hotel was just renovated and re-opened in January of '08 so everything is fresh. I much preferred the Sofitel a block away, better rooms and much better service.

Wow! What Luxury!

from Get out of Dodge
We stayed at the St. Regis for one week in March, just one month after the hotel reopened from a one-year major renovation. We are very familiar with this intimate hotel from previous stays in 2005 and 2006.

All the rooms were gutted, and they have new furniture, deluxe beds and Italian bed linens (must be 1000-thread count), completely new bathrooms with natural stone in light greys and tans, rain-head showers, plasma TVs, and I could go on and on. Apparently top designers were involved in the redecoration and it shows.

Best of all, 95% of the staff has returned to the St. Regis, and the ones I spoke had worked anywhere from 15 to 19 years for the hotel. They said they were treated so well that they would never leave. And I think this is the reason the service is so good and the staff is so welcoming. We just love this hotel!

Only one glitch from the renovation. One 79-year old member of our group was assigned to a room with a combination bath/shower (our room just had a huge walk-in shower, and apparently there are rooms with separate showers and baths). Unfortunately, the bath was so deep that stepping into it was very unsafe because there were no grab bars to use. Even middle-aged folks might have difficulty. The hotel has been made aware of this problem and I can't help but think they will address it. Interior designers don't always get it right!

The bar hadn't reopened yet (will be in April) but the food we had there was delicious.

If you want to feel like a queen or king, this is the place!

from Escapefromthedesert
I adding this as a late entry. I stayed over Fourth July Weekend. The location is excellent as it is right behind the White House. The area is very classy.

When, you enter the hotel, you will be impressed with the decor, style and elegance. If you are not prepared to pay, you may not want to stay at the hotel.

The rooms are nicely decorated and the bed was comfortable. The gym was small, but furnished with modern equipment. I could not get a room with a breakfast rate. The restaurant offered haute cuisine and the food was excellent, but pricey.

The staff is very attentative and were professional.

I would recommend the hotel for any one willing not to be concerned about price. It would be an excellent honeymoon or lover's getaway. If you have a family it may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a weekend of elegance and old style this would be the place for you.

Top Local Tips for Washington

Try Wish I knew in advance - Made a res at Kinkead's because of it's reputation. Was fine overall, with awesome desserts though. Local friends told us about Hook afterwards - Right on M St in Georgetown, uses ingredients from sustainable fisheries and local farms only. Oh, well - Next time.

taking in the sights of DC without a rental car We loved accessing public transportation. We found absolutely no need for a rental car while staying within the city. We did learn however, that certain Metro stations are closed on the weekends and do have specific hours of operation.
