Hated it.

from A TripAdvisor Member
The first room in which they put me was between a service room and the elevators. It had no bathtub, and there was a wind tunnel/machinery noise that was constant. I had asked for a quiet room, as even they admitted. They did not tell me until the next day that they had not reviewed my preferences before holding rooms and that this had been the last room available. Had they done so, I would have moved to another hotel.

The second room, which they claimed to be quiet, was over the dumpsters and a parking lot. Garbage trucks started at 6 am. The bed was defective, which they denied until I reminded them I had been in another room and thereby had some perspective.

To top it off, they tried to charge me a perviously-undisclosed $50 cancellation fee when I left a day early. Only after I reminded them of the problems, noted that I had not asked for a refund fo either miserable night, and reminded them that I could simply report the experience to my corporate travel manager were they willing to back off.

All in all, a miserable stay.

First, the rate was rediculous at $375 per night. It must have been extra high because of either spring break or cherry blossom season.

There are no coffee pots in the room, so I order a large coffee from room service, which cost almost $15 after tax, room service delivery, gratuity and tax. Next time, I will be looking for a hote with a coffee pot.

The bedding was very comfortable and the decor was unique. The blower did send a draft over my bed, so I ended up turning the furnace off. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

I'd rather save a few bucks and have a bit less service. I don't need a turn down service with an apple and fancy bottled water.

The restaurant is supposed to be very good.

Great hotel, just ask for a quiet room

from Goldrusswoman
My husband and I stayed 4 nights here in March 2005 for a conference. Room and bathroom were spotless, and the Aveda toiletries are a nice touch. Bed was SO comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was strong. The staff were very polite and helpful. It's about a 3 minute walk to Union Station. Most of the clientele seemed there for business not for being a tourist (although were were there for both). Coffee and breakfast in the bistro was great. Also there's a great little cafe for a quick, cheap breakfast or lunch on F St (I think called Kelly's?).

A few negatives:
It's not in the best part of town, especially on the weekend when the buildings around the hotel are empty. There seems to be some sort of organization for the homeless just down E St from the hotel. I wouldn't walk around there at night, but just took cabs anyway so it didn't matter. During the week the area was buzzing with business folks, so it seemed fine to walk around during the day.

The first night we spent in a room facing E Street on the 7th floor (there are 8 floors). It was impossible to sleep (even with ear plugs) as there was traffic noise all night and there was a high-pitched whining noise that went on all day and all night without stopping (sounded like a generator from the building across the street as we could also hear it when we were outside the hotel). The next morning I asked for a quiet room and was given one on the opposite side of the hotel facing a parking lot on the 5th floor, but we didn't care---it was heavenly quiet!

I would highly recommend this hotel but be sure to ask for a quiet room.

A Wonderful Hotel

We stayed at the Hotel George for two nights over President's day weekend. The rates offered directly through the hotel were pretty outrageous for us (about $400 per night), but we were able to get a much lower rate ($189) through hotels. When we arrived, we were greeted by very friendly staff who advised us on key areas in DC that we might want to visit. The room was a very comfortable size and was very clean. The decor was tasteful, although somewhat confused in terms of color scheme (neutral bedding and wallpaper paired with a flourescent print). But that wasn't a big deal. The Aveda products in the bathroom were a lovely touch. The bedding was very plush, great pillows and exceptional bedding. The hotel is conveniently located, just a few blocks from Union Station and the mall. We felt very safe. Overall, a great place to stay. We were very pleased and have nothing bad to say.

Clean, sleek, modern

from superOK
Hotel George is one of the only modern boutique hotels in the DC area. The rooms were a good size and very clean. The beds extremely comfortable (reminded me of the "heavenly" beds at the W) and the shower had great water pressure. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the billiard room & gym/steam room seemed to be open 24/7.

As for the negatives, there wasn't much of a view and we could hear almost everything coming from the hallway. Also, the hotel is a little out of the way (about 12 blocks from all the museums, White House, etc.), though it was only a block or so from the subway station which runs until 3am.

t see any place I would rather have stayed for this price.

The price was right at $149. Location a VERY convenient 1.5 blks from Union Station--walk from Union Stn Metro (red line) to hotel a TINY bit spooky at night, parking area between hotel and Union Stn with scary people hanging around, OK with my 6'3 husband though wouldn't do the walk alone at night. Agree with others that bellman/doorman non existent, maid service inconsistent but got the job done. Front desk staff was very friendly. The room was pretty nice, clean Sofitel-like with small room, large bathroom, comfy bed with euro-boutique hotel type bedding. No decent views from any room that I could tell--hotel shorter than surrounding buildings. Didn't see any place I would rather have stayed for this price.

Agree with others the restaurant, Bistro Bis, was a BIG let down. My husband had the trout and it was inedible, the FAMOUS endive salad just ok, the lamb special was pretty good, the drinks VERY VERY expensive, host AND hostess snobbish and unhelpful, promised a good table-- went from bad to worse after complaining. The restaurant was HOT, as in, inadequately air conditioned. The wait staff was very good, but, honestly, the Indian fast food or the soup place at the Union Station Food court was MUCH better than anything we ate at this restaurant. The bar was a hoppin' joint which made one think the restaurant was busy too but the restaurant stayed only half full during our dinner.

The George is well-run, guiet, clean and comfortable. The food is good. The problem with the hotel from my point of view is that most of the rooms look right out into other rooms. As a consequence one keeps their blinds down all the time. If this does not matter to you, the hotel is a good choice because everythng else is fine.

Hotel George Highly Recommended

We selected Hotel George based on some of the reviews we had read durning the past 6 months and feel that we made the right choice. Our beds and large bathroom (with a window) were especially enjoyed, as promised.
The staff were wonderful to our teenage grandson and we really enjoyed the complimentary happy hour (Napa Valley wines).
We did not try the restaurant but it seemed to be a "hot" spot.

It was the right fit for our "Washington D.C. vacation!

Good choice if you obtain a good price

from wineisfine
Stayed here for brief stay in June, 2004. I would not have booked without a special room rate (below the advertised rate). Unlike another review, I found the doorman to be most accommodating (he even saved me a possible stolen car by noticing that I had left my keys in the passenger door!
I liked the room amenities, the lobby, the Bistro Bis restaurant, the location, the whole package! No complaints, only compliments to give. As a result of this stay, I will consider other stays at Kimpton Group Hotels. Hotel Madera is another of their properties in DC and I have lunched at the Firefly Restaurant there and considered staying there. I may stay in one of their hotels in Portland, Oregon next summer.

The Hotel George is a nice enough hotel. It’s has a slick modern look to it, is clean and very convenient since it’s right by the train station. The neighborhood can get a little “iffy” if you walk a couple blocks in the wrong direction, but since I’ve been to DC many times, it’s easy enough to avoid the bad areas.

I had reserved a double room 2 months in advance, and confirmed the night before my arrival. When I got there, they apparently had no doubles left and had to give us a single with a roll away bed (Strike one). When we got to the room, turns out someone was already in it (Strike 2). Throughout the stay, I was never asked if I needed help with my bags, I would walk by the doorman who would make no effort to hail a cab, and on most occasions was nowhere in sight (Strike 3).

Although the cleaning people did an excellent job (the rooms were very clean), they came at rather inconsistent times. Before noon on some days, and not until 3 or so on others. Some nights they would turn the bed down, others they didn’t…it’s no biggie, but it just seemed like they didn’t have their act together 100%.

I’m glad I tried the Hotel George, but I have a couple other favorite hotels in DC, and all things being equal, I’d stay at those over the Hotel George.

Top Local Tips for Washington

Metro is easy Don't be afraid of the metro. Round trips are 2.70, and short walks from metro stations are good exercise. Subway is clean and very easy to figure out.

library of congress don't miss the beautiful art in the LoC's Jefferson building. worth the time.

Old Town Trolley is well worth it! Highly recommend the Old Town Trolley for both day and night tours. The drivers are just a wealth of knowledge, entertaining, and a great way to get around the city. During the day, you can get back on and off the trolley at designated stops as much as you like. It is well worth the money.
