’ Heaven; Purgatory for Others
from jackfurlongesq_123Located off DuPont Circle (and convenient to a Metro stop), the renovated building opens on P Street between 21st and 22nd. P Street is two-way, but there’s no entrance drive to the hotel, so you’re looking at a U-turn from the 22nd Street side. Since there’s a single valet and no one to take your bags, your first move is frenetic. The group in front of us retrieved their own bag carrier from the lobby, but the apparatus would not fit into the cramped elevators (they wedged it, with one teenager sitting on top of the bags; rest of the family rode with us, otherwise, we weren’t getting our own elevator to open.) Do not attempt check-in between 5 and 6 PM. A single desk officer handles all inquiries and check-ins, which can mean torture if you’re competing with the slightly sloshed gratis-wine-tasting lobbyists asking idle questions of the poor guy for entertainment (“If I wanted a late check-out, would I be able (slurp) to get that (slurp)?”) You will be carrying your own bags.
My room was advertised as I guess an executive suite (two cuts above a junior suite on the Internet offers, $439/night.) My deskman described it as a “motion room,” leading to my question and the answer I only understood when I unlocked the door. A high-end suite means a standard sized room, single basin bath, and a 6x8 foot alcove with a flat screen tv and a step-climber (whatever.) Shower water never got hot; some lights in the room were inoperable, and I had a delightful view of some building backs.
But it was so trendy. His and her robes in zebra and leopard, dark rugs, geometric wall coverings, sleek furniture, a very comfortable bed. Complimentary hi-speed Internet. Call it a slightly toned-down W lacking the techno-pop in the lobby. Staff wore brown instead of black.
Room service was timely and high quality. Fact was, when you got a live body to deal with, the experience was pleasant. It’s just that the company probably elected to hold prices down by keeping the staff as minimalist as the décor.
But at the end of the day (literally as well as figuratively), a hotel above the first few floors is a place to sleep. This concept has not penetrated the Palomar guest list. From roughly midnight to 3AM I listened to the serenade of the hard partying folks in the seventh floor hallway, one of whom vomited in mid-sentence. House security was unresponsive. By 9AM, it was time to escape, not depart. Of course, the check-out clerk may have been programmed to avoid asking, “How was your stay?” Hence the importance of TripAdvisor.
Another nice Kimpton property

from DanawheatleyGreat location, right by Metro station and many little restaurants nearby. Will stay again for sure!! Highly recommend!
Great!
from Beatrice12Fantastic Hotel - Top Notch Service
from hannahgomblesFANTASTIC!!
from janetnoelWe've stayed at the Hotel Rouge and Topaz on previous trips to D.C. and enjoyed our stays there, as well, but the Palomar is by far our favorite and a step above the others. We just got home tonight and already begun booking our next trip to the Palomar for December!
A few of our faves: the complimentary glass (or glasses, if you like) of wine from 5-6 each night in the lobby, the recommendations of restaurants and night life by the staff, the fuzzy blankets on the beds, L'Occitane bath products, and Mimi's across the street. You MUST stay here... it is a fabulous hotel!!
Stylish Sophistication at a Very Reasonable Rate
from TreviBathrooms were spacious, well lit and well equiped.
Had a delicious breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, Urbana.
The front desk was super efficient and friendly and always seemed to be one step ahead of you to see that all of your needs were met.
Metro is 3 blocks up the street, a brisk, 5 minute stroll. Or the bellman will see that a taxi is quickly available if you're conserving energy
Would happily stay here again.
Hotel Palomar - Chic and Modern
from VTTrekkerNR
Plush and pampered
from SilbermanlawMost importantly, it was clear that there was attention given to every detail of the hotel. The towels were fluffy, the air conditioning was perfectly adjustable and quiet, the warm comforter on the bed was supplemented by a fuzzy blanket, there were sufficient pillows on the bed, and the hair dryer could be removed from the bathroom.
The rooms were small but well-arranged. There was no accessible plug next to the bed -- an irritant for those of us with laptop computers, but there were plenty of plugs on the table for our camera batteries, 2 phones, and ipod.
The decor was fun and creative.
The location is right next to the metro in Dupont Circle, which makes travel throughout DC easy.
The restaurant was noisy, so we called room service. We received our food fast, it was warm, and it was absolutely delicious. The price wasn't much more than we would pay at the restaurant.
Overall, we were very pleased and, since we come to DC often, we will definitely return to the Palomar.
Fantastic experience
from NCTravelorAnd I got it on priceline.com for $90 a night! The only drawback was the cost of parking. A little steep for me, but it's the city.
Top Local Tips for Washington
Metro The Metro is a clean subway that is great for getting around town. You can even get to most hotels in the D.C area from the airport wihtout too much trouble. A wonderful Resturant for Sunday Brunch is the Mansion on O street. Don't miss the Smithsonian and the Botanical Gardens!
Bring a car AND take the metro :) We had no problems with the Vallet and honestly I don't know what the price was but they were quick friendly and efficient. (call before you go down to get car) No charge for in and out. If you have a navigation system this is ideal for Washington as anyone who has been there knows how confusing the layout of the streets are. Public Transportation though is incredible all over DC so when you can...save gas and frutration and hop on the clean quiet Metro !
