2 Stays While On Extensive Usa Visit

The first stay we were very pleased with the room given and the help given by the staff. However on our return in October we were given an inferior room, more suited to disabled people (we were not disabled) and was told the staff was unable to help with confirming an airline booking, we had to find an airline number and ring ourselves to find our flight had been cancelled and we would have had problems connecting with an international flight if we hadn't have followed. If we had rated after the first visit it would have been about 8 to 9 out of 10.

’ Heaven; Purgatory for Others

from jackfurlongesq_123
Here’s the problem with hipster hotels: there aren’t that many hipsters in the world, so a lot of faux hipsters show up, bad looks and all, and act as though the rules of hotel civilization do not apply to them. Welcome to the Hotel Palomar, Kimpton’s latest entry in high chic/low service warehouses.

Located off DuPont Circle (and convenient to a Metro stop), the renovated building opens on P Street between 21st and 22nd. P Street is two-way, but there’s no entrance drive to the hotel, so you’re looking at a U-turn from the 22nd Street side. Since there’s a single valet and no one to take your bags, your first move is frenetic. The group in front of us retrieved their own bag carrier from the lobby, but the apparatus would not fit into the cramped elevators (they wedged it, with one teenager sitting on top of the bags; rest of the family rode with us, otherwise, we weren’t getting our own elevator to open.) Do not attempt check-in between 5 and 6 PM. A single desk officer handles all inquiries and check-ins, which can mean torture if you’re competing with the slightly sloshed gratis-wine-tasting lobbyists asking idle questions of the poor guy for entertainment (“If I wanted a late check-out, would I be able (slurp) to get that (slurp)?”) You will be carrying your own bags.

My room was advertised as I guess an executive suite (two cuts above a junior suite on the Internet offers, $439/night.) My deskman described it as a “motion room,” leading to my question and the answer I only understood when I unlocked the door. A high-end suite means a standard sized room, single basin bath, and a 6x8 foot alcove with a flat screen tv and a step-climber (whatever.) Shower water never got hot; some lights in the room were inoperable, and I had a delightful view of some building backs.

But it was so trendy. His and her robes in zebra and leopard, dark rugs, geometric wall coverings, sleek furniture, a very comfortable bed. Complimentary hi-speed Internet. Call it a slightly toned-down W lacking the techno-pop in the lobby. Staff wore brown instead of black.

Room service was timely and high quality. Fact was, when you got a live body to deal with, the experience was pleasant. It’s just that the company probably elected to hold prices down by keeping the staff as minimalist as the décor.

But at the end of the day (literally as well as figuratively), a hotel above the first few floors is a place to sleep. This concept has not penetrated the Palomar guest list. From roughly midnight to 3AM I listened to the serenade of the hard partying folks in the seventh floor hallway, one of whom vomited in mid-sentence. House security was unresponsive. By 9AM, it was time to escape, not depart. Of course, the check-out clerk may have been programmed to avoid asking, “How was your stay?” Hence the importance of TripAdvisor.

Another nice Kimpton property

Awesome Hotel

Amazing hotel, especially for the price! Service was topnotch, they even accomodated my need for a humidiifer. Rooms are spacey and well decorated and even have hook ups for your ipod. The hotel restaurant is very good as well. Ask for the AAA rate even better.

Great location, right by Metro station and many little restaurants nearby. Will stay again for sure!! Highly recommend!

Great!

Spouse and I stayed here for 5 nights the 2nd weekend in Nov. 2006. The room was very clean and comfortable, and the decor was very modern/trendy. As previous reviewers have mentioned, there internet access is free, and there's a complimentary wine 'happy hour' from 5-6 every day in the lobby--your choice of red or white and a communal fruit and crackers tray. I also thought the gym was pretty nice--a few treadmills and stairmasters, an exercise bike and free weights. The only problems I had were that the AC stopped working the 2nd day and I had to call 3 times before someone came up to fix it, and the toilet got backed up the last night. However both of these problems were fixed and the staff was always very nice and helpful. Overall it was a really good experience. I'd totally stay here again.

Fantastic Hotel - Top Notch Service

from hannahgombles
We are just concluding our stay at the exceptional Hotel Palomar. A month previous we stayed at their sister hotel, Hotel George, and had a great experience, too. Upon arriving, we were exhausted after a long drive and were not thrilled with our room (beautiful, but too small). The manager got involved immediately and for a reasonable upcharge, moved us into a huge room with a view. Everything is new and in pristine condition. The decor is chic, but friendly, and the beds and bedding are exquisite! We had six fluffy new pillows, a down filled quilt and a California king bed. The bathrooms are large and gorgeous with granite counter tops and raised bowls sinks. The shower is clean hot and powerful and you are spoiled with L'Occitane spa quality soaps, hair products and lotions. The key to our positive impressions regarding this property is the courtesy and professionalism of the staff. After 4 days, the doormen, porters, front desk manager and hotel manager knew us on a first name basis - all willing to share stories and go out of their way to make us feel special. Finally, the location is ideal, close to Dupont Circle and Georgetown.

FANTASTIC!!

from janetnoel
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Palomar from Nov. 5-7, 2006, and we were completely pleased by every aspect of the hotel. The lobby, walkways, and rooms are chic, clean, and classically decorated. The bedding was lush and comfortable. The staff members were incredibly friendly and helpful. From the bellman to the front desk to the concierge to the sommelier, we were treated like we were upper class (and we're actually just a middle-class-20-something couple).

We've stayed at the Hotel Rouge and Topaz on previous trips to D.C. and enjoyed our stays there, as well, but the Palomar is by far our favorite and a step above the others. We just got home tonight and already begun booking our next trip to the Palomar for December!

A few of our faves: the complimentary glass (or glasses, if you like) of wine from 5-6 each night in the lobby, the recommendations of restaurants and night life by the staff, the fuzzy blankets on the beds, L'Occitane bath products, and Mimi's across the street. You MUST stay here... it is a fabulous hotel!!

Stylish Sophistication at a Very Reasonable Rate

from Trevi
Just returned from a 2 night stay. The price was a great value for a weekend in DC. The rooms were sleek and cozy at the same time. Lots of space to spreadout in super comfy bed and chairs. Loved curling up in the fabulous faux fur throw.

Bathrooms were spacious, well lit and well equiped.

Had a delicious breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, Urbana.

The front desk was super efficient and friendly and always seemed to be one step ahead of you to see that all of your needs were met.

Metro is 3 blocks up the street, a brisk, 5 minute stroll. Or the bellman will see that a taxi is quickly available if you're conserving energy

Would happily stay here again.

Hotel Palomar - Chic and Modern

from VTTrekker
I stayed at Hotel Palomar for a conference during mid-August. I loved it! The hotel did a superb job of paying attention to detail. My room was well-decorated with comfortable bedding, lush carpets, and even an iHome alarm clock. The bathroom fixtures were contemporary. I had no problems with the staff or front desk, even when I had to check out earlier than I had expected. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to explore Dupont Circle as much as I wanted to, but it was close to DC metro stops which made it very convenient.

Plush and pampered

from Silbermanlaw
We just returned from a weekend at the Hotel Palomar and had a wonderful experience. We arrived just as the complementary wine was being put away, and the staff made a special trip to bring us two glasses of wine -- much appreciated after our flight. Throughout the stay, the staff were warm and helpful.

Most importantly, it was clear that there was attention given to every detail of the hotel. The towels were fluffy, the air conditioning was perfectly adjustable and quiet, the warm comforter on the bed was supplemented by a fuzzy blanket, there were sufficient pillows on the bed, and the hair dryer could be removed from the bathroom.

The rooms were small but well-arranged. There was no accessible plug next to the bed -- an irritant for those of us with laptop computers, but there were plenty of plugs on the table for our camera batteries, 2 phones, and ipod.

The decor was fun and creative.

The location is right next to the metro in Dupont Circle, which makes travel throughout DC easy.

The restaurant was noisy, so we called room service. We received our food fast, it was warm, and it was absolutely delicious. The price wasn't much more than we would pay at the restaurant.

Overall, we were very pleased and, since we come to DC often, we will definitely return to the Palomar.

Fantastic experience

from NCTravelor
I stayed for business the nights of 10/18 and 10/19. The staff, from the maids, to the desk, to the bellhops, compared to the best I've ever had. The room was spacious, particularly given DC's reputation for small hotel rooms. The furnishings were exquisite. The bathroom was gorgeous. I loved my jungle print bathrobe. The location can't be beat for DC nightlife -- right in the heart of Dupont Circle.
And I got it on priceline.com for $90 a night! The only drawback was the cost of parking. A little steep for me, but it's the city.

Top Local Tips for Washington

Metro The Metro is a clean subway that is great for getting around town. You can even get to most hotels in the D.C area from the airport wihtout too much trouble. A wonderful Resturant for Sunday Brunch is the Mansion on O street. Don't miss the Smithsonian and the Botanical Gardens!

Bring a car AND take the metro :) We had no problems with the Vallet and honestly I don't know what the price was but they were quick friendly and efficient. (call before you go down to get car) No charge for in and out. If you have a navigation system this is ideal for Washington as anyone who has been there knows how confusing the layout of the streets are. Public Transportation though is incredible all over DC so when you can...save gas and frutration and hop on the clean quiet Metro !
