This is a nice, stylized hotel and the location in proximity to Dupont Circle is terrific. We checked in late and the night auditor checking us in was not very helpful. Service in general was just mediocre. Its an interesting place to stay. Only moderately recommend it.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Madera

Helpful Staff

from jiminredding
My wife and I just returned from our trip to the Washington DC area. We stayed at Hotel Madera for three nights starting 11 November 2004.

Upon our arrival we were well received by the staff. Even though we missed the free wine by a couple of hours the host, Victor, was happy to give us a glass. A week prior to our arrival I called the hotel directly and asked for a room in front with a balcony, non-smoking and on as high of floor as possible. All of these (except the non-smoking) were because I read the reviews at Tripadvisor! I also called that morning to make sure we wouldn’t lose out on our requests.

Unfortunately, the upper floor request was nowhere to be found and we landed on the 2nd floor. The room was great! Very contemporary and well appointed. As some have written, the bathroom is small. However, it is only the shower / toilet area. Outside of that is a very nice and large vanity / closet area with plenty of room. The bathroom size is thus a non issue. The next night they moved us to the 8th floor to accommodate our original request. I almost didn’t bother with the move because we were very happy with the room. What a great choice; the view was much improved.

The bottom line is that the DuPont Circle area has a huge selection of great restaurants, bars, shops, etc within walking distance. We traveled exclusively via the Metro which was only about two blocks away. I had never been to this part of DC and I was VERY happy I chose this location and this hotel!

Nice little hotel

We just returned from a 5-night stay at this hotel. We found the accommodations to be spacious with very friendly staff. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to eat at the restaurant, Firefly, but it seemed busy every night, which is a good sign. The rooms were always very clean, and the hotel staff very helpful and friendly. The Starbucks coffee in the room was a nice touch, as well as the wine reception happy hour each day. There is also a complimentary yoga basket by request, but I did not actually request one. There is a CD player with great sound, but bring a couple of your own CDs, as the hotel did not have a CD library, contrary to what is advertised on their website. Another nice thing is the complimentary use of the computer at the business center. It was very convenient and allowed me to check my email during my visit. I did not find lighting to be a problem in our room, as another reviewer had commented. The hotel is also in a great location - a trendy, residential area - and was only 2 blocks away from the Metro entrance. Lots of eating choices nearby. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit!

This is a terrific choice

We stayed at the Madera for 4 nights in July. Wasn't sure what to expect from the reviews here, but found this to be a wonderful, very accommodating hotel. Our room was on the front of the hotel and had a balcony, which was great for our dog, who enjoyed watching people go by. The room was nicely decorated, exceptionally clean (especially for a "pet-friendly" room) and very well appointed. I appreciated the great stereo system.

The staff at the Madera is extremely friendly and helpful. I don't agree with past reviewers' comments about the valet service -- each time we requested our vehicle, it showed up in a couple of minutes.

I have to laugh at the comments about the size of the bathrooms, as evidently these travelers have not stayed in hotels in NYC or Europe. Yes, the toilet and bathtub area are in a small room, but it is big enough for what you are doing there. The vanity area separate and very spacious, with ample room to get ready. The water pressure in the shower was awesome and there was plenty of hot water for 2 of us to take showers.

The drawback is if you are in a smoking room (which our friends were). The room they had was much smaller than ours, and did not have a balcony. Because of this inconsistency, I can't give the hotel 5 stars, only 4. Other "minuses": The overpriced breakfast (although there are plenty of other options in the neighborhood) and the cost of overnight parking ($24/night.)

But if you are looking for a great in town location, friendly service, and nice accommodations, you won't go wrong with the Madera. Have fun!

Not A Bad Place

Nice location one block from Dupont Circle. Seems to be a seventies era apartment building converted to a hotel. Standard boutique-y decor which wears thin fast but clean, comfortable and quiet. They seem to be mechanically challenged, the bathtub didn't drain well, the shower diverter was hard to work, the smoke detector beeped loudly so we ripped the wires out. Had a nice stay all in all.

A wonderful place to stay

I stayed at the Hotel Madera for 5 nights the end of June. I found the hotel after reading reviews on this website and I was not disappointed! The rooms are huge (although I do wish I had a LOT more room in the bathroom) and well furnished in a "fun" contemporary way. I found the staff to be wonderful........every request I had was taken care of right away. The only negatives I could find were the bathroom size and poor lighting in the couch area. The location is wonderful as it is situated on a quiet street while being only a 2 minute walk from Dupont Circle, great restaurants, shops etc. I will stay here again on my next visit.

Great location, great service

from shoppergirl
The Hotel Madera is a traveler's oasis in D.C. The room's size and amenities are perfect for the extended traveler who is looking for a quiet hotel in a neighborhood setting.

The hotel is within walking distance to many restaurants, shops and galleries, as well as the Dupont Circle Metro stop.

Once again, the Kimpton Group lives up to its excellent reputation for serving customers well!

Over-rated hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I found this hotel over-rated and over-priced for what you get--small rooms, incredibly tiny, even
uncomfortable bathroom, a noisy air conditioning system that either made the room too cold or too hot. The service was friendly but they had one person on who had to park cars, retreive cars, get
bags from cars, deliver bags to rooms, deliver room service orders to rooms and so on. This meant that you got good service if you happened to ask for something at the right time.

The restaurant in the hotel, Firefly, is quite good and provided the food for room service. Unfortunately, you can't get food between lunch and dinner (5:30) and room service ends at 10pm.

The good parts: it is close to Dupont Circle and the restaurants that are there; it has free broadband internet access, and the people who work here, though there aren't enough of them, are quite friendly.

For me too many negatives with too few positives. We come to DC a lot and won't be staying here again.

You should stay here

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Madera for two nights June 5-7, 2004. While looking for a place to stay in DC, I read the reviews on this hotel from this website, and looked at the hotel's own website, and felt that this would be a good choice. I was right. We arrived for check-in just in time for the nightly, complementary wine reception (as my husband says, any vacation that begins with a drink at check-in is a good one). As a Kimpton In Touch member, I asked for a high floor room with a balcony (which we got). The room was very spacious, very clean, and very nicely decorated. It's modern and sleek, but not too trendy. Think Thom from Queer Eye in blues and tans with dark wood and silver metal. All amenities were top rate; bath robes were luxurious. Lots of nice little touches, such as Starbucks coffee in room. My husband asked for a shoe shine and they did a good job, even returned shoes to our room in a bag. The location is great -- two blocks from Dupont Circle metro stop and within walking distance to some great restaurants. The on-site Restaurant, Firefly, was delicious and reasonably priced, and filled on a Sunday night (a good sign of a restaurant). I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Washington

Don't take the Metro. Understanding the Metro payment scheme is an exercise in trigonometry. If you want to avoid running afoul of the system that requires a doctorate to understand, just walk.

Make Reservations Washington is an early city but folks seem to eat between 7-9. Make reservations to ensure you get to eat where you want. Also wander the neighborhoods for restaurants not listed in guidebooks but are appealing to you

Use the Metro The DC Metro service is easy to use, and helps you get to main shopping/sightseeing areas easily. People warn you all the time about crime etc in DC but sensible precautions that apply in any city apply here too. Once I started using the underground trains, it became foolish to spend a bomb on taxis.
